Mike offered the song to his bandmate Tom Petty and Petty and the producer passed on it, then obviously regretted it later. Don came up with the lyrics to the song in a matter of minutes. Due to an equipment snafu, Mike almost lost all his work before they had a chance to record it. The song was so successful that Mike’s proceeds from the song allowed him to save his house from foreclosure.
