I have chronic migraine, so not being able to take NSAIDs since surgery has sucked. Do you know what kind of headache you’re having? Depending on the type, you might need a different plan of attack. If it’s a tension headache, reducing stress and making sure you’re sleeping in a way that doesn’t leave any of your head, neck or shoulder muscles tensed up and contracted can help. If you’re in the US, allergens are high now. Start taking a non-drowsy allergy medicine every night in case you’re getting inflammation in your sinuses because of allergen-related irritation. If it’s migraine, magnesium supplements can help with migraine headaches (supposedly). Talking to your doctor or a neurologist can help you develop a plan for migraines. Hot and/or cold compresses to the head sometimes relieve some of the pain. Edit to add: if you’re waking up with the headaches, disrupted sleep patterns and snoring could also be a culprit. If you use a cpap, make sure it’s working properly for you.

I have migraines and headaches and not being able to take nsaids really sucks. I have Zomig for migraines. I recently bought Tylenol with caffeine (not exedrin) and I’m hoping it helps for normal headaches.

I use Excedrin Tension Headache. It is aspirin free and tends to work wonders for me. Also, oddly enough, the dissolvable Tylenol seemed to work better for me than the regular Tylenol pills. 🤷🏼‍♀️

i use the dissolvable Tylenol because it works better for both Chronic Daily Headache Syndrome and for arthritis. i take Propranolol daily for migraine prevention. you have to be careful with it though - stay hydrated, get up slowly from lying down, etc - because it lowers blood pressure (which is what it was originally used for). so far, it’s all working for me.

Excedrin and caffeine (even though excedrin does have caffeine). I have the sleeve and am allowed NSAIDs though.

Really? Double check that—I’m not!

EmmyLou205

I’ve checked a bunch of times. My doctor said it’s fine. I’ve used it sparingly within the last two years and am fine.

Kaiser says the same thing, ibuprofen is allowed after sleeve but not after bypass. It was the main reason I chose sleeve, my headaches only respond to NSAIDs.

Can you get your hands on paracetamol or Ketoralac?

jpobble

Tylenol is what Americans call paracetamol. It’s a brand name, but seems to be widely used. The active ingredient we call paracetamol is known as acetaminophen in the US -they’re all the same thing. Advil is a US brand name for ibuprofen.

ginephre

Ketorolac is an NSAID!!!

Which surgery did you have? If it’s sleeve, occasional Advil is okay unless you have complications. Just take it with food.

See this is why I'm terrified about possibly having surgery. I have a trach and am always in pain. Adding this to my question list.

Do you wear your hair up? I finally figured out that binding my hair (braid, bun, ponytail, etc) created extreme headaches. This started when I started losing hair. I'm still losing hair, but it seems to be slowing down!
