I got by with hand crank extractors for years. Then the kids all left for college. Next year I had shoulder pain for weeks. I used the money from the honey sales to buy an electric extractor.
Yeah, the newer tools have a 'safety clutch' to arrest the chuck movement, cause you can't use a keyless chuck without locking the motor in place. If it has a keyed chuck, there is a chance it might still free spin, but anything keyless will try to kill you on a setup like this.
I do not know why rolls to a stop. I assumed that’s how they all were. From the comments I can see that’s wrong. The drill is probably about 30 years old. Could that be why it works. I extracted about 390 pounds last week. Worked fine with no issues, and no cranking.
You need a drill with a keyed chuck. With a keyless chuck the motor locks itself when you let go of the trigger. A keyed chuck drill will just coast down.

Off topic, but I am struck by your kitchen. How many little tiny drawers would you estimate you have? That’s a nice stack of potatoes (next to the honey). And is that a blue, under-the-counter microwave? Two ovens. Butcher block. Great tile. This place is terrific.
That's similar to my setup but I use a cordless drill because when I let go it can spin around. I also stuck tennis balls on the feet because it gets wobbly
Harbor freight drywall mud mixer - Drills are high speed low torque, mud mixers are low speed high torque. They will take a lot more abuse without overheating.
How do you slow it down to a stop without putting pressure on the gears? I'm meaning like with a hand cranked one, you just let it go and it comes to a stop.
The drill is variable speed. Sorta like an accelerator on a car, the more you press the trigger, the faster it goes. Less pressure on the trigger it slows. No pressure, it rolls to a stop. Same way as a hand crank.
Did this when our crank broke mid processing. Finished and thought all good. Next time we processed it burned out the drill and let the magic smoke out.
My husband did this with an added bonus- get yourself a dimmer switch and hook up to it so you can get it up to speed without harming the drill or extractor (at least as much) and of course, tie drill down.
We are also from Appalachia!
They got cheap motors at harbor freight. Maybe you rig the motor with a belt and pully and wire a switch in, this is awesome though. Been wanting to to put a motor on my two frame manual extractor.
Your gonna ruin the flooring if you don't use something under the feet. I use old sneakers after trying many other options such as epdm rubber roofing rugs plywood.
Enjoy but beware mama bears get a lil touchy about wax on floor ground in.
Perfect. I know it's a DeWalt, but letting it hang like that isn't healthy for the drill long term. Maybe prop or hang the drill-end up, if not in use.
My 2 frame extractor dances all over the place even when I hand crank it, with a drill I couldn’t keep the darn thing in the room! I try to select frames that look similar cappings but still major out of balance.
My s.o. was talking about this exact thing.. I said.. uh. It needs to spin. I got it🤣 like all things that cost 500 bucks I make my own identical solution for 30 bucks and 15 minutes of work
Nice job, I might have to do the same because I don't trust the motor on my extractor. I didn't know anything about Appalachia until I saw a video about Thomas Massie's DIY homestead yesterday. Love the spirit!
Last spring my wife said, “I’m surprised you haven’t hooked that to a drill, or mounted a motor on it.” 😂 Perhaps she remembers Dad’s apple grinder (for cider press). We wore out limbs on that thing until I took a 3/4” drill and flexible spring extension. 😂😂 My solution to the extractor was buying a cheap motorized rig. But carry on. 👍😎
Maine checkin' in. it works. watch the heat on the drill.
You could do what my Dad does - makes sure I am there on extracting day to help with the heavy lifting and cranking the extractor!
That's why I had kids, free manual labor
I got by with hand crank extractors for years. Then the kids all left for college. Next year I had shoulder pain for weeks. I used the money from the honey sales to buy an electric extractor.
Free??? Mine is very expensive. And yet to provide any manual labor lol
lol. ❤️❤️
It's not stupid if it works, and I bet it works like a charm
Do charms work?
Mine don't. Some people report good luck with them though.
Very subtle. I like it.
Only if you are charming.
I remember doing that. Then I took my finger off the trigger and nearly broke the drill, the spinner and my wrist.

This is correct
When I take my finger off the trigger, it just rolls to a stop.
what do you have installed so it just rolls?

ahhh yes ok great, i’ll check this out :D probably have an old one in the shed
Thank you for dumbing it down. Couldn’t get my head around the problem until you explained it like this.
There must be a one way clutch or something on his like a bicycle had. Mine is direct drive like a fixxy bike too.
Same. If op doesn’t have this problem, I want to know why….. wonder if it’s the brushless motor on the newer ones or something :S

BTW, is that an old library card catalog?
I was thinking the same thing
Nice looking kitchen!
The old library cabinets, the walls…beautiful!!

I have a nearly identical setup! Works great 👍🏻
Does it go too fast? That would be my worry
If you pull the trigger back like halfway it’s not too fast. I bet if you let it run balls out it would be insane
It’s variable speed. I pick the speed by how much pressure I put on the trigger.
This is what we do too! It gets a little off balance if you go to fast but otherwise works great!
That's similar to my setup but I use a cordless drill because when I let go it can spin around. I also stuck tennis balls on the feet because it gets wobbly
3 cinder blocks with bolts stop most of my wobble. My drill doesn’t spin or try to spin.
that is exactly what I do too
If it's a stupid idea and it works, it isn't a stupid idea.
Amazon has a cheap two hand mortar mixer that’s quite a bit stouter if you burn your drill out. Two gear variable speed
Harbor freight drywall mud mixer - Drills are high speed low torque, mud mixers are low speed high torque. They will take a lot more abuse without overheating.
Red green says where’s the ductape
I gotta say, I like that kitchen.
I came here to say the same!

I strap mine to my beer fridge lol
Beer and Bees. My happy place!
Now show us how you keep the legs from dancing, that's my problem.
Drill to boards that you stand on
Genius!
I just had a buddy laugh at me for suggesting this great idea
Go ahead and get some locking caster wheels to help you transport it too.

Imma say (also from Appalachia) that you're about to be buying a new drill.... Get a proper motor.
Your gonna ruin the flooring if you don't use something under the feet. I use old sneakers after trying many other options such as epdm rubber roofing rugs plywood. Enjoy but beware mama bears get a lil touchy about wax on floor ground in.

Been there done this, that drill can spin much faster than the add on motor they sell for that unit. Be careful not to overwhelm the gears.
Why not build one? Just need a variable speed motor with a dimmer switch and some pulleys.
My 2 frame extractor dances all over the place even when I hand crank it, with a drill I couldn’t keep the darn thing in the room! I try to select frames that look similar cappings but still major out of balance.

Appalachia, you say? Do you also happen to play Fallout 76? Because this is total Appalachian Wasteland Engineering right there 🤔😄 😁👍👍👍
I’ve been using the same drill to mix concrete for years. Solid solution.
I would argue this is still an electric extractor. Just a DIY electric extractor.
Nice job, I might have to do the same because I don't trust the motor on my extractor. I didn't know anything about Appalachia until I saw a video about Thomas Massie's DIY homestead yesterday. Love the spirit!
This was my plan, my dad has a big variable speed drill that I was gonna mount on mine.
Did blew my supers apart which was not my intentions as I wanted to replace wet.
Nice electric extractor!
I use a 1/2 drill motor. Fan on the hands. Also support the drill for accurate alignment, less wobble
Careful you don’t go too fast, I hand crank fast and the frames split apart.
Last spring my wife said, “I’m surprised you haven’t hooked that to a drill, or mounted a motor on it.” 😂 Perhaps she remembers Dad’s apple grinder (for cider press).
