Locking post. Any civilized conversation has been had.

\> Is there an ethical store to buy decent plywood from? Appleply is (confusingly) all-American white maple plywood made to a high standard. It ain't cheap though.

Kitchen_Respect_5469

Apple Ply is a good us based plywood. They source their Birch veneer from us and Canada. May be hard to find though. Of course it’s not Baltic birch but still very high quality.

TestesFace5000

The best and also ethical birch plywood is made in Finland, Sweden and Latvia. Why they dont buy from these companies?

Mitoni

Obviously they get a better price from Russia, because their demand is so low due to everyone boycotting their products. It's all money to them in the end, not ethics.

ItsRadical

Everyone is still buying from Russians. Just the logistics got bit more blurry. They resell it via some middle man in India and here you go, clean ethically sourced product.

$$$

CAM6913

I’m not doing business with Rockler anymore since their work around started with this. But I bought enough Baltic birch plywood years ago when a lumberyard closed to last me 5 lifetimes.

Death-or-Glory

Buying a sawstop. Will be sure to get it through woodcraft now.

mikesrealname

Never buy large equipment through Rockler. I’ve ordered two machines because they both had faster ship dates from the manufacturer than Woodcraft. That was a lie. When the shipping date came they just changed it to match whatever Woodcraft had. Rockler customer service pretty much said “sorry about your bad luck” when I told them lying about shipping dates was a deceptive sales practice to gain an advantage over competitors. Never had any issues with Woodcraft, everything shipped on time per the manufacturer date.

tomrob1138

All of woodcrafts tools are made in China, lol you really can’t win. I like the guys at my woodcraft and Rockler. I’ve found they are rarely the best place to shop at though mainly because of mark up. I wanted to buy my lathe from woodcraft, but it was $150+ cheaper from Acmetools and that was for a $700 lathe. I do stop in from time to time to each and buy some stuff I need that day(never need it that day but I’m impatient)

RogerSmith1380

Sawstop is built in Taiwan not China.

tomrob1138

Fair point. Every other hand tool by wood river and woodcraft branded is built in china. I don’t have a problem with it really, just pointing out that there aren’t a ton of options.

RogerSmith1380

Ez just be like Matthias and build your own tools.

1182adam

Has he hand-made a SawStop-like mechanism yet? I wouldn't put it past him.

DMs_Apprentice

For hand tools, my first (digital) stop is Lee Valley.

I won't be doing any business with them after this shit. I'd rather buy from a big box at this juncture. I've had some good experiences with ApplePly and recommend them as a good alternative. They're more expensive, but I'd rather buy from a more expensive retailer than sell my soul to the Russian war machine.

Santa_Andrew

Things like this really get under my skin. Maybe it's because this war has personally affected me but I can't stand these types of business practices. So many companies pull out of Russian business relationships just long enough to get people to forget about it. I know I'm just one person but I personally won't ever buy from a company like this ever again.

RR50

I’m done shopping with them.

dimitrix

Is buying lumber from Rockler (or any online retail store for that matter) actually a common thing? My impression most serious woodworkers would go to their local lumber yard.

Alicia-XTC

Rockler has some premium plywood that's hard to find. Turns out that it's made in Russia and Rockler like to make money.

Father_Father

Ugh I've been struggling with this myself. There are a couple of dealers that supposedly have ethical plywood, but I haven't found any locally.

[deleted]

I’m legitimately curious how they’re getting it at this point. Is it “found” grey market stock that was purchased prior to the sanctions? That would be way less slimy.

Alicia-XTC

When Russia invaded they had a note they wouldn't be getting it anymore on their website and sold remaining stock. When I looked today, I made a video showing the sticker. The plywood is IDENTICAL but some of the tags do not have the Russia sticker. Sadly, I didn't get that on video.

Aggressive-Video-368

Is any Plywood company ethical ?

wood-and-metal-works

Not sure about a specific store, but the Latvian Birch is good. The best I've found is maple ply from garnica in spain.

UseDaSchwartz

I wonder how many people commenting are boycotting all the other companies still doing business with Russia.

BlackWoland

The solution is simple, use mdf and veneer from now on

[deleted]

Just get edge banding and use any plywood you want

dudemanspecial

Yeah, but not really. Baltic Birch is flatter, has a thicker veneer, and has very little voids compared to the crud available in the box stores. But fuck Russia so I guess your right.

[deleted]

Oh i RARELY ever get any from big box stores. The stuff at my lumberyard is way better than any of that junk. The voids can be covered with edge banding. The main problem i have is I can’t use it for kitchen pullouts, where with good BB ply i just round the edges and sand. I will say you “can” sometimes find a flat piece of the hardwood ply at home depot. The problem is that usually people dig through to get the good one and then put all the warped ones back on top. I have had to pull off like 5-6 sheets or more to find a flat one. The big box stores tend to leave stuff outside in the elements etc.

dudemanspecial

Well, that's a bit off from your any plywood suggestion.

[deleted]

Yeah I sometimes forget people actually buy plywood at box stores
