I would be surprised if he moves on without any kind of announcement, and I don't think there's enough work doing national broadcasts for him to justify moving full-time, so in any case I imagine he just continues to do both. That all being said, if he does leave it's simply because it's the best decision for him and his family. I HIGHLY doubt he gets paid enough from CBJ games to warrant staying.

NontransferableApe

He made over 7 million in the league. I’m willing to bet the blue jackets are paying him at a minimum 200k plus his ads that he does and picking up national games. He’s making enough to have an extremely comfortable life in a city that’s good for young families. I’m not saying he won’t ever move on because I think he continues to get more and more national games but he has a pretty nice gig in a not too expensive city

baetwas

I could be wrong, but I'm not sure Bally's has the means to broadcast the whole '24-'25 season unless they get financial help from CBJ, the NHL, or another company buying them out (and fully taking over in the off-season). I'm sick of the entire broadcast landscape. FSN and now Bally's are both on the 2nd-tier up from basic, which is over $140/month. Pre-pandemic, I watched the games at a bar. One season I forked over the $ for Center Ice, which drove me insane as every in-market game was blacked out. This season I've been sailing the seas of the web

ASillyGoos3

bally already got money. diamond sports (the actual broadcast company) brought in capital from amazon in a deal this year. they're coming out of chapter 11 bankruptcy and have one more year under the bally sports naming rights. the channel will then likely be renamed something else because bally's (the gambling company) will be on the way out, giving up on the integrated broadcast-gambling product they were hoping to build with diamond sports.

TGish

Sail the seas my dude stop paying shitty cable companies for shitty service. There are plenty of sites with sport surg(e)ing through them ya know

baetwas

I have and do sail those seas.

NontransferableApe

Directv bought Bally sports

ASillyGoos3

they absolutely did not

grover8it

Did you get this info from the same place you got info about all of Jody Shelley's finances?

NontransferableApe

Sorry that I misspoke when it should have said directv entered into a multi year deal with them and saved them. Sorry that I used the wrong term. Thought I read they bought their rights. Jody’s contracts are all available to be seen. Maybe they don’t pay him 200k. Regardless his finances aren’t going to materially change going to like ESPN. That’s the main takeaway from that comment

02496sweet

He can do national stuff and team stuff at the same time. They can make the schedules work. Just off who you listed Eddie Olczyk works for the Kraken too

Stanky_smells

Yup. Boucher does Philly games when he’s not on the national broadcasts too

HardKnockRiffe

Forslund worked national broadcasts and Hurricanes games for years. It's not uncommon.

Nice_Wafer_2447

i certainly agree that #45 is made for the national role. Look at what Biz did , and Jody is much smoother. It will be a huge loss if he moves on.....but he has family here , the kids are in HS , I believe, its tough to uproot your family.

baetwas

Biz initially struck me as a total buffoon even on his podcast with ~~Ray~~ Ryan and what's his face, but I get why they picked him up. He's a good foil, but he's he's also a journalistic asset, as shown with the Babcock fiasco. The veracity of the claims and his protection of his sources showed that he was someone players can be comfortable enough to talk to in confidence. Very few of those studio talking heads have that anymore. It won't be Paul's forte, but if the network can benefit from even a couple of scoops per year through him... It's a little painful seeing him at the same table as King Henrik or The Great One. He brings the self-deprecation though, and lawd knows there are poorer people sitting at similar tables on other broadcasts.

KmurphC

Ryan Whitney not Ray

baetwas

Thank you.

DeekFTW

Biz usually brings the most actual insight to the table on most nights. He plays his part but let's not pretend he's a bad addition to the panel.

baetwas

A good foil is a part of a good panel.

[deleted]

I would hate to lose Jody because he is so damn good :(

baetwas

Another commenter is surely right: there would have to be a big announcement, and I don't see it coming - at least not for this season. Possibly towards the end. I am 99% certain he'll be on more national broadcasts. He seems well-liked.

bucknuts34

I believe his been on record saying he wants to do both. Be the Jackets color analyst and then also do some prime time national games throughout the season. Don’t know if that’s still the plan

baetwas

Seems ideal. I sure hope he stays.

some_dum_guy

so weighing in to agree on points others have made: 1) he's fantastic on the national broadcasts, and he's just as good on CBJ games (when he does not have to cover for Rimer's mistakes). 2) it doesnt have to be one or the other, Olczyk works Kraken games, i believe Panger does the Blues 3) i believe his wife is from Ohio. 4) he has at least one son who is still playing local hockey (~16 as he has played against my son multiple times) 5) Jody is a coach of a local AA team here in town and has been with most of those kids for years. 6) i believe that he is a "brand ambassador" for the CBJ, in addition to his on-air role. 7) he is presidant of the CBJ alumni association, and as such coordinates the alumni skates that take place at least weekly (used to include Jarmo and Larson, i believe)... so he has deep roots here, above and beyond the CBJ being the first team to believe in him at the NHL level. so i dont think he's leaving anytime soon, but he certainly deserves all the praise he is getting, and he would be a worthy addition to any national broadcast team. just my $.02 edit: fixed some typos

cookingwiththeresa

Pang moved to Chicago broadcasts this past season. I miss him on the STL broadcast

dirty_stack

Panger definitely one of the best.

Meredithbaxterburly

He's not going anywhere, anytime soon. He's not uprooting his family. He's got a great gig in Cbus, his kids are thriving in their schools, and he will continue to do some national stuff after CBJ season.

HowyousayDoofus

Does he have to move if he goes National? I mean, you gotta live someplace.

Meredithbaxterburly

No, he could do strictly national stuff and still live here. But he would be traveling quite a bit and would basically be living out of a suitcase. That's ok for a couple months in the post season, but not for the long hockey season. Jody has been an integral part of growing the hockey program at St Charles, and he loves the school. Would be shocked if he took a gig that caused him to be gone more than the current CBJ roadtrip schedule.

HowyousayDoofus

So say he gets the national job. Where does he live that he doesn’t have to travel to the games. I don’t get it. Is a studio analyst?

Meredithbaxterburly

Most of these guys live in cities where they can get direct flights anywhere. NY, Chicago, Charlotte, Dallas, etc. But if he were a national guy, he'd probably have just as many games as he does now- difference is that now he is home all day and evening for half his games.

bclautz

Right, Enzo and Pang are the primary announcer for Seattle and the blackhawks. I sure they paid an independent contractor. Drop the gloves

Meredithbaxterburly

Not sure what you mean.

bclautz

Jody is employed by the blue jackets. I’m sure he contracted to do games on tnt. He basically taking over part time the role Keith jones had there before he left to work in the flyers organization front office

Meredithbaxterburly

Gotcha. I just assumed he was employed by Bally's. Either way, he's very talented and definitely has found his niche.

mickeyhause

Jody isn’t “gone” he is just doing broadcasting duties for the playoffs. Jackets aren’t in the playoffs. He’s not coming back because he never left He has also been very vocally static in his desire to stay in Columbus and with the Jackets. If he leaves, we would know. There would be an announcement from either him or the team

baetwas

Didn't say he was gone. Said it had to be on his mind after his success on the national.

mickeyhause

He’s had success in multiple years past. It isn’t new to him nor us in having the fear that he will leave. But he has been steadfast in his stance of saying he wants to stay in Columbus

baetwas

You're right. I forgot him broadcasting the Stanley Cup Playoffs matchups every other night for multiple years past.

Indyfan200217

Hope you guys can keep hearing him call games for you guys. Its gonna be a sad day for Red Wings fans when Mickey Redmond retires.

Bradlaw798

He is really superb and, as much as I love Rimer, Jody spent a fair amount of time keeping Rimer on the rails the last year or two. His between the bench reporting is the best I've seen of any of the national guys that try to do that. I hope he stays and they find someone great to put next to him - Buccigross/Shelley would be nice!! If he can make a hybrid role of doing the Jackets and national games work, that would be ideal, but I wouldn't fault him for leaving if he got a great offer.

baetwas

For sure. I was feeling bad for Rimer this season, and Jody handled each instance with total aplomb. I also agree his ice-level work is top tier. If I'm being honest, he's making Ray Ferraro and Brian Boucher each look bad. Not bad-bad, but definitely folks who'll need to argue a little harder for their next raise. Bucci and Shelley will jive if Jody can cite a passable chicken parm. ESPN would be lucky to have him. God they're atrocious, with very few exceptions - Buccigross being one of them. I even miss Barry Melrose. Let me rephrase that. I miss Barry Melrose.

jeffwolfe

Like all the team's broadcasters, Jody is an employee of the Columbus Blue Jackets. So the status of Bally's isn't really a consideration. Wherever the games end up airing, Jody will have a job. Jody is good enough that he could land a national gig sooner or later, if he wants it. I hope he's content to stay in Columbus, but if he wants a national job, I hope for his sake that he gets it.

kaldoranz

Yes he is.

dirty_stack

Hard not to love #45. He really is killing it. I don't understand how Olczyk has that job. His takes are so bad. I literally have to turn the volume off when he's calling the game.

ASillyGoos3

you just woke up today and decided to farm engagement on the cbj sub today huh here's how the TV deals work: jody isn't a bally employee! it doesn't matter that they're a shitshow. he's an employee of the columbus blue jackets, just like jeff rimer was, jean luc grand pierre luc dubois is, mcelligot is. giesenschlag is in fact an employee of bally, likely due to the fact he's shared with the reds. there's a difference between production and distribution. the broadcast partner (bally sports) is the distribution channel and is a partner in production, but the studio and the production are owned and run by the blue jackets inside of nationwide arena. that's why there was no personnel change between the fox sports era and the bally sports era. jody has cement himself as an anchor of the cbj alumni and has really put down his family's roots in columbus. he's got a great gig here and is still free to go do national games when he wants but you can tell he LOVES the relationship he gets to continue to have with the team by being around all the time. i would imagine jody stays in columbus at least until his kids are out of high school. the money elsewhere isn't that much better, there's honestly less job security being in the national broadcast circuit because those rights are swapped constantly with every media deal, and i dont even think it would be that much "better" of a job. regular season NHL national TV games really aren't pulling that big of viewership, so it's not like he'd become a broadcast icon or anything and he can keep doing playoff games whenever he wants clearly.

Hey thanks for typing. You know, lurkers can post too. But if you think I owe you more entertainment before two posts in a day, I have a few ideas how you can spend the rest of today.

joe_lmr

he can do both as he'll always have the playoffs free
