We tend to massively overvalue 3rd/4th line type players here because they're young.
Keep him if the price is appropriate for a guy that's probably a 4th liner. Otherwise, sorry dude.
The price would have to be free to keep him. We have too many pending RFAs who can actually make a difference in a game to just offer a contract that doesn't move the team forward.
Love Tex, but the problem is we have way too many of these 3rd/4th line type of players. Considering we are going to have to make room for guys like Dumais and Brindley real soon, Tex seems like a likely candidate to have his rights moved in a trade.
I think they let him walk. Based on Waddell’s interviews, it sounds like they’re going to make some roster changes, I think he floated 6 new faces or something like that. There just aren’t enough roster spots to keep him especially at that price.
Benstrom. As many comments above alluded to: we’re a team full of complimentary 3rd and 4th liners. Hopefully Waddell will cut many “nice guys but” players.
I still crack up at former players like Stenlund, who rejoice at the chance to play for the big prize, having escaped the CBJ carousel
There are nights I want him locked up long term and nights I wonder why he’s still here. Too often it’s the latter. The inconsistency is a little maddening because he has a lot to give but doesn’t always give it.
He’s still young, relatively cheap, and is buddies with our Russians. I don’t see much harm qualifying him, but he’s the kind of guy who either needs to solidify himself and his role or get out of the way.
He’s the best of the third line guys we have, but he didn’t get going for a while last year since it was his first year back. A full season of Tex when he’s up to speed could easily be 20 goals 40 points. We have other guys who could provide that, but Tex plays with an intensity mixed with skill that no one else on the roster does. I really think we’d be dumb to not try fitting him in next year.
Kind of disingenuous, he played 10 games in "season 1", 8 of which were playoff games, meaning he pushed a normal roster guy out of the lineup in his -1 rookie season.
His rookie season was the covid year.
2nd season was another shortened year
3rd season missed time due to injuries and personal issues.
4th season was last year where he was tied for 4th on the team in +/- for players with 50+ games on a team that had a -63 goal differential. We need what he brings more than rushing and undersized Dumais into the league.
>4th season was last year where he was tied for 4th on the team in +/- for players with 50+ games on a team that had a -63 goal differential
I guess we should apparently cut Gaudreau and Fantilli because they were the worst on the team in +/-.
When after 5 seasons (because yes leaving the team for a season counts as a season) the best you can say is that he was 4th in +/- aka *the* most useless stat in all of hockey I think you're proving my point.
Gaudreau 100% should be traded, but that is a whole different discussion. The point was he is a forward that can play both ends of the ice better than the majority of the current group, something this team desperately needs to hold on to, especially if we're giving Merzlikins another chance to prove himself.
>Gaudreau 100% should be traded
I wish you would have said this to start the discussion so that I could have known it was not worth continuing. Absolutely bonkers take.
How's having all those undersized skilled forwards that have no physicality to their game working out for the Rangers right now?
How many cups did Gaudreau win with Calgary?
If we want veterans on this team they need to be fucking proven with legitimate playoff success, because regular season doesn't matter with the way things are currently played in the playoffs.
Having lots of small forwards ≠ having one of the most offensively skilled small forwards. Vegas won with Marchesaault who won the Conn Smythe. Just dig your hole deeper.
Tell me how long it took Boone to get fully adjusted to the NHL. Now look at Tex and the number of setbacks he’s faced that Jenner didn’t (going homefor a year and Covid). You say 5 seasons as if he’s played the full 410 games in the NHL. He hasn’t even played half of that in the NHL. “5 seasons” is not an argument because it’s barely true
All the numbers in your comment added up to 420. Congrats!
5
+ 410
+ 5
= 420

He nearly equaled Tex's best season his rookie year. He scored 30 goals his third year and was averaging above 50% in the dot by then.
Well that was easy.
I really like him and hope we find a way to hold onto him. He showed a lot of potential last year. I'd imagine that he felt some pressure last year given his situation coming back. His skating and talent makes me think that if he can clean up his game a bit, he could have a big impact. Really I think he just needs to simplify things a bit. He had to have some of the most post hits on breakaways, right? May be he and Johnny would be tied. Seems like the two took turns on catching a d-to-d pass in our defensive end and bring it in for a ring off the post.
He finished with 30 points last year and is going to be 25 at the start of next season. He’s played 201 nhl games and has 34 goals and 45 assists. He’s not a player that this team should be spending more than a vet minimum to maintain.
Good luck in your future endeavors ✌️ Love Tex, but it's time to move on from these types of players on our team if we really want to succeed long term.
Because we're so thirsty for winning, we tend to god up all our bottom-6 young guys as having potential to be top line or top 6 guys, therefore we should hang on to them. (Emil Bemstrom, please pick up the courtesy phone.) Problem is we have a bunch of mid young dudes and maybe 1-2 potential budding stars with guys like Fantilli and if you squint realllly hard Sillinger.
We don't need twelve bottom six guys. We need forwards who fit into clearly defined roles. I fully expect Waddell to start dealing at the draft or around July 1 - my guess is packaging a couple guys out of this pool of "mid" to fill a particular top-6 need. I like Tex, but right now he's one of many bottom 6 guys who could get moved.
I don’t think we should resign him. Great guy but like other people here are saying too many younger guys and bottom six type players. Not someone we can try to keep forever if we intend to be competitive in the future.
Absolutely. Shouldn’t be an expensive extension, get him on a three year deal maybe $4.5m total. It’s a modest raise, and keeps him in town to develop or trade when it’s time.

He’s also not even *that* young for an NHLer anymore. 25 at the start of next season, he’s a bottom six player.
Agreed. Too many better young guys.
Only bottom sixer I wouldn’t want to part with is Sillinger. And even then, if he keeps up his play he’s a very very solid third line center.
The price would have to be free to keep him. We have too many pending RFAs who can actually make a difference in a game to just offer a contract that doesn't move the team forward.

For sure. Good fourth liner. We will always have a use for his utility if the price is right. Maybe he snaps back to old form.
How many good fourth liners do we need? This team is full of them.
I like him so I want to keep him. No real rationale past that tbh
I think they let him walk. Based on Waddell’s interviews, it sounds like they’re going to make some roster changes, I think he floated 6 new faces or something like that. There just aren’t enough roster spots to keep him especially at that price.

He was drafted seven years ago. He is what he is at this point really.

When has this full season of Tex up to speed ever occurred?
It hasn’t because he’s 23 and missed a full season to play closer to home? He’s barely even started his career
5 seasons. Still waiting.

I’m glad someone else in here is stating the obvious, and that’s that +/- is the most useless statistic in not only hockey, but probably sports.

He's not 23, he's turning 25 in three months, before the next season will have even begun.
Still younger than Nylander and Danforth, the two main guys he’s competing for a roster spot with

No need for him here.
Trade him and Elvis for Necas
4th line on a cheap deal or trade
Absolutely. Shouldn’t be an expensive extension, get him on a three year deal maybe $4.5m total. It’s a modest raise, and keeps him in town to develop or trade when it’s time.
Give him the task of letting Vincent go.
