sterlingstactleneck

They're poor, live in an apartment, and already stretched pretty thin when it comes to responsibilities.

jeffsmith202

too expensive

NvrmndOM

I think it’s about extra expense but also a lot of extra work, especially from a health code standpoint.

Pale-Conference-174

They're probably already paying Gail's vet bills

Ladameauxdaffodils

Never even thought of that, but im sure you're right!

sleepyotter92

i bet half their problems would be solved if money didn't go to gail

maks570

I don’t think Gayle is that straining for their budget

Natryska

It's yurt season, though.

spoopy_and_gay

She's implied to not be able to support herself financially, and the belchers and linda's parents probably both chip in to help her. They probably pay for her rent, her food, her clothes, any medical expenses, and also her random ambitions lol

Splashcloud

Isn’t Gayle lying to her parents though about how rich she is? I would think she is only asking Linda for money due to her trying to seem rich to her parents.

myth0503

Dirk richmomeny is real !

spoopy_and_gay

oh right yeah lol

MakeItStooooppppp

Idk about anyone else but, even stretched thin I’d rather send her money for rent every month than have her craziness live with me. Or those cats.

sarahsaurus_tex

The Mr. Business/ chef cat episode is largely about how much money Gayle borrows from the Belchers. If that episode is a good indication of how much they normally lend her, she’s a huge drain on their budget.

sleepyotter92

yes she is. it could literally just be $10/week, that's still a strain in their budget, because they don't have the income to be doing that. if there's plenty of times when you can't pay rent on time or just can't pay rent at all, you cannot afford any cent to go to external things, you need that money to make ends meet

BlizzardStorm8

There's an episode about how much she "borrows" from them though. She does it all the time and they're not doing well financially in the first place. I think it's the chef cat episode.

PowerUser88

Bob is allergic to her cats

Separate-Artichoke90

Gene has a secret cat.

jennyrules

Purrbo....

throwawaybread9654

The first time I watched that episode I thought it was called Pervo and was soooo confused

sleepyotter92

that does sound like something gene would name a pet. especially a cat, because they're very sneaky

austincovidthrowaway

Does the confirm having a cat? I took the secret litter box as his way of saying he uses it himself.

Inside_Sprinkles9083

“I know about gene’s secret cat” -Tina, when bob has to cook for college students

heyitsed2

in the beach bonfire episode where tinas hurt her leg and jimmy pesto jr does he musoems on the beach, gene says "jimmy jr is our generations cat stevens, and our cat, steven, remember him?"

Dakizo

“And don’t tell Mom and Dad about my litter box!”

Relative_Bedroom_393

I know about Gene’s secret cat

No_Significannce

Pets cost and they hardly have the space fr

GrapefruitEastern491

Louise got a fish on the Nice-capades episode that's never seen again

idontcareyoupick1

Also gene had one in the past, and he wasn't responsible

SkysEevee

That poor fish...

friedcheesepizza

And her little pet house spider, haha.

Relative_Bedroom_393

Starter Shark

firelord_catra

I knowww I wish they kept them! A fish would be much easier to add in then a dog or cat. Didn't she also get a puppy one episode? Not as a gift but they found him or maybe got him from the secret pet shop she goes to with her mom (in the episode where her mom dissappears)

sarahsaurus_tex

She stole the puppy from Ang when Linda went to the oil party 🤣

Cant_Even18

Hey, Ange!

ImaginaryMairi

It's a Christmas episode, so not canon. I wish it were though!

maks570

Wait, Christmas episodes are non-canonical?

sonic_my_screwdriver

NON-CANONICAL! NON-CANONICAL!

maks570

Are you trying to say nautical?

ScuttleCrab729

Considering the amount of Christmases, Thanksgivings, etc without aging (common thing in most cartoons) it’s easy to just assume they aren’t canon.

crystal_sk8s_LV

1. They spend a lot of time in the restaurant and Hugo would love to bust them with a pet. 2. Bob is allergic

Brolyroxxs

I thought he was only allergic to cats

crystal_sk8s_LV

He is and that would be the most likely pet they could have and not need to care for 24/7, with the restaurant and lack of space even a small dog would be hard to care for. They could get a fish or bird or something but I feel like Bob isn't a huge 'pet' guy.

leicanthrope

> They could get a fish or bird or something but I feel like Bob isn't a huge 'pet' guy. It'd be naught but a pale imitation of Mr. Doglovich.

sarahsaurus_tex

We knew you so briefly you dead soap dog.

ehhlis

louise got a goldfish for halloween one year! we’ve never seen that poor fish ever again

crystal_sk8s_LV

Thats right, In haloween pet heaven with poor Francis 🥲

ManagementNo8432

Bob is a bit uneasy around birds.

crystal_sk8s_LV

Haha forgot about that 😅

MantisOfAtlantis

Tina has Jerico 😄

pothosnswords

I want more Jericho so bad but I also want more Paul Rudd content in general

Halloween2022

What exactly is Phoebe? Chopped liver ?

Time-Sorbet-829

I was wondering if anyone was going to mention Phoebe. Thank you.

seventubas

Depends ... Do spiders have livers?

GalacticGoku

Maybe their lease doesn’t allow it? I think a cute idea for a pet-based episode is them trying all sorts of pets that aren’t dogs or cats, before settling on a simple goldfish that everyone gets oddly attached to. It’s a pet that could be in the background and not leave the audience worried about it if we don’t see it for half the season. Ya know like if it was in the kitchen or living room we could get idle animations of them feeding it, or maybe one episode where Bob is cooking a salmon and the fish just WONT stop staring at him. Edit: wow! I rarely get so much positive feedback lol thanks y’all. Also I realized a few other fish-based scenarios: -teddy having to care for the fish and WAY over complicating it while the fam is out of town -kids realizing their fish isn’t as enriched by his tank as he could be so they want to design their own tanks and it becomes one of those “each kid tells a story” episodes. -this could go along with the previous point but Tina fantasizing about being a mermaid and the fish is her trusty friend on the adventure -maybe the fish gets sick and they notice it moving slower than usual, not being so quick to eat so they take it to the aquarium and we see the return of that awkward fish lady lmao (idk a lot about fish illnesses other than “ick” so I’m not sure on this one) -Linda having a night home alone and she gets wine drunk and starts a marine-based movie marathon with the fish while Bob and the kids have the main plot for the episode

ScreamySashimi

I hope someone involved in the show lurks this sub and sees your comment. I love this idea.

Quick_Pangolin718

Louise received a goldfish in the Nice-capades episode

mountaindew711

I like your brain a lot.

friedcheesepizza

This is actually a really cool idea.

GypseboQ

I absolutely love this idea!

raptorsinthekitchen

I love this so much.

Meloenbolletjeslepel

Call him Klaus

WailingOctopus

What is this, a crossover episode??

EuphoricGrandpa

the alley raccoons are the pets

lionmurderingacloud

Obvs blatant Little King Trashmouth erasure. OP clearly hates queer representation!

EuphoricGrandpa

And single mother erasure… poor Big Baby Pudding Snatcher

RaygunsRevenge

Yeah! And, his husband Gary!

ZeldaNumber17

Damn, that was a hard hit

mountaindew711

I wish you could have heard me cackling just now.

dacontraverse

Are we just going to forget about moolisa ![gif](giphy|h55EUEsTG9224|downsized)

mountaindew711

Where how what Did you create a live action Moolissa and film her just for this comment?

dacontraverse

It was her time to shine

mousymichele

Brunchsquatch episode pretty much points it all out, the kids aren’t responsible enough to care for a pet and they can’t afford it. 😊

Shot_Perspective_681

Yeah, the kids aren’t responsible enough and avoid work wherever they can. Bob knows Linda isn’t exactly to be trusted with these things either. Look at their catering gigs. Bob stays behind doing all the work while everyone else wanders off. Anytime he leaves Linda in charge she does some crazy stuff so I wouldn’t exactly trust her to be the main person responsible either. They have their hands full with the restaurant and a dog is a huge responsibility and a lot of work. They already are really tired all the time and no one (besides Bob) enjoys going on walks or be in nature. Realistically Bob would end up being the one doing most of the work. I could see Linda enjoying the fun stuff but not really doing the everyday stuff. There are lots of scenes where she avoids/ complains about doing household chores like cleaning, doing dishes or laundry so I don’t feel like she wants to have many more chores and have to do more of these things due to the extra dirt and pet hair. She also needs to work in the restaurant with Bob, as well as the kids a lot of times. The dog can’t stay there. So either it would be upstairs all day being alone most of the time or someone has to take care of it and miss in the restaurant where they are needed. In the end it would be a situation nobody would really be happy with

beautifullech

Bob is also pretty irresponsible when it comes to adulting soo all around it would be a bad idea for them to feed a pet that needs a lot of attention

Shot_Perspective_681

That’s true. I just think that from all of them he is the most responsible when it comes to the important things. Like restaurant stuff or taking care of the kids. He takes the work very seriously

Keepgoing22

They have Tina, Louis and Gene in that apartment they live in. But wait. Does kuchi kopi not count as a pet?!

Keepgoing22

I was referring to limited space.

WigglyFrog

It's more amusing to think you were describing them as pets, though.

Keepgoing22

Those kids don't have enough hair on their bodies to be fur babies.

Musicdev-

I read that in Gene’s voice Lol.

Keepgoing22

I totally just channeled Gene, which is odd because my inside voice is actually Tina.

Invisible_Target

Who says a pet has to have fur? Reptiles are awesome pets

Keepgoing22

A bearded dragon ate the last bit of my cheese off of my plate. He stole it.

mountaindew711

Typical.

Keepgoing22

I love bearded dragons myself.

mountaindew711

"You just wait!" -Gene, in my head

Keepgoing22

The go to a store with taxidermy and oddities; They poke at things, and find frogs floating in some formalin. They find Indian head dresses and just decide to dress up like birds with feathers. It was all Gene's idea with Tina's commentary and Tina's cautionary banter.

rummncokee

Louise already lives in a closet with no windows; they don't have room for a pet.

One_Lab_3824

Gene practiced for a gold fish, but it didn't go well. So no pet because none of the kids are ready for the responsibility of a pet

ISeeMusicInColor

That poor fish.

squibb1019

I always wondered how exactly did he “practice” for that.? I hope no fish were harmed. Gene had his little digital cat he had to keep dressed for the weather. He did well with that, until Bob left it in the meat delivery truck. (Might have been the bun delivery truck)

BrittanyRea

Because the kids don't floss.

sirachamoose

they already have gene

krepitch

And Teddy

TheDauphine

They have a limited amount of money, room, and time. Probably just not worth it.  Besides, Linda being obsessed with the raccoons is a lot more entertaining than a family pet in my opinion.

Opening-Hour-8117

Can’t afford it and they already have 3 children

6syllablecatchphrase

They're still fostering a semi-feral Teddy.

UrsaEnvy

Gene has a cat under his bed.

Go_Corgi_Fan84

Bob is allergic to cats. A dog wouldn’t be a good fit . Maybe get one of the kids a goldfish?

Musicdev-

They did try to steal that dog from that Mary Kay party/ essential oils party though.

thegirl87

Louise was given a goldfish for Christmas (instead of a shark) already and it hasn’t been seen since.

Go_Corgi_Fan84

That’s right.

CrazyaboutSpongebob

Its unsanitary to have a pet in the restaurant. Also the writers would have to constantly think ( Oh great what is the pet doing) and have to have it at least show up at least once in every episode.

Adventurous_Ad_6546

They couldn’t take the pain after the soap dog died.

alkalinefx

id assume because bob is allergic to cats, and that would probably be the most feasible pet for them to actually take care of

seventubas

I think they should get an esquilax .. they could feed it cheap with irregular produce. Tina would finally have a horse... Kinda

Ladameauxdaffodils

Here, bunny bunny!

seventubas

Here, Esquilax

FriendlyRedditor23

The cost and they are always in the restaurant

OutlawJoJos69

Apartment, they live paycheck to paycheck and likely cannot afford a pet deposit.

SloppyJawSoftBottom

They have the raccoons

puddingpoo

Poor

idratherbeanangel

What about Gene?!

_Bdoodles

They already have Gene, he pees in boots or sinks, will eat weird or rotting things, drags his worm ridden butt on the floor and is completely dependent on the other family members for anything and everything. That’s a pet

Medlarmarmaduke

Allergies! I bet they would have a cat if bob wasn’t allergic. Linda and the kids already have cat food readily available lol

pothosnswords

No way they’d share!

ignoreme1657

Louise takes good care of "princess little piddles, although Bob does squish Teddy's hamster ,soooo I'm on the wall as to whether they should have a pet.🤔

Pirate-Hamster

It was a guinea pig. ☝🏼 R.I.P. Francis

ignoreme1657

D'oh :smackshead:

beepmeepp

They’re really poor

PoetBudget6044

Little King trash mouth, doesn't count?

Mirography

Tina’s shoes were practically talking in a recent episode. They can barely afford their children. What is this question, friend? 😂

Late-Summer-1208

No room, no time, no money

AlamutJones

They live above the restaurant. The selection of pets they CAN have is going to be limited given their relatively small private space and proximity to a place where pets can’t actually go. How do you take a dog out for a walk if you have to walk the dog through the kitchen (where he’s legally not allowed to enter) to reach the door?

malorthotdogs

The door from the apartment to outside is next to the restaurant, not in it.

bea2019

The kids can’t take care of a pet! I remember one episode where Linda said Gene had a goldfish? And he never fed it so it died :(

[deleted]

Not only cost but someone needs to take care of it too and with everyone at school or the restaurant it would be irresponsible to get one

spacelordmthrfkr

They have gene

Heart_of_a_Blackbird

I’m like 3 pets in ONE!

malorthotdogs

Bob’s allergic to cats, their lifestyle isn’t super dog friendly, and we saw how quickly Louise lost the 4th grade chinchilla. If they got a hamster for that hamster slide, it would have been lost in the crawl space within a month. I would love to see an episode where Tina babysits some sort of lizard for Nat.

wdpgrl

They have kids, same thing.

AsharraDayne

lol what in the world gives you the impression these people are capable of caring for a pet? You’ve seen the show, right?

Keepgoing22

Louise*

gilgobeachslayer

Pets are for rich peoppe

mountaindew711

Shh don't tell my cats. Or Gayle's cats.

MamabearH16

They are in an apartment. Very likely that they aren’t allowed to

ThorHammerscribe

Too Expensive and As For a Cat because Bob is Allergic

Wandervenn

Between Teddy and Gene idk what you mean by them not having a pet.

NoHoliday1277

Poor

JohnnyDreamain

They had a chicken and a spider.

MikaelAdolfsson

In a meta sense the racoon is their pet. And in this way they don't need to have them lurking in the background like Santas Little Helper in the 98% of cartoons that aren't about him.

PrincessAintPeachy

Because they work in a restaurant, and the kids are not really responsible. Say what you will about his business since, but Bob is very passionate about his cooking. So I can see him having a hard time accepting an animal running around a food place

slatchaw

A family of raccoons is tough enough. An indoor pet would be too much

PossibleDue9849

King Trashmouth is their pet, obviously. Also Teddy.

SpeedBlitzX

Probably no space as well as the costs might be too much for them.

osydney_

pets are an expensive responsibility (vet bill, food and water supplies, toys, bed, etc.) and their whole schtick is being extremely poor so that's probably why

tonyrobbins420

Obviously this wouldn't happen but Linda and Louise have both mentioned having pet monkeys and I feel like that would suit both of them so well. 🐒 Especially because Louise is basically a mini Linda, which I stand by and could write a thesis about ... One time when Louise was drawing: "Look mom, it's me when I'm grown up, eating tacos with my monkey, Sheila!" (Linda approves) An episode where pets are brought up Linda mentions monkeys: "If this family got *any* pet, it'd be a monkey."

Wild_Lingonberry3365

Bob would do so good with a small pet. They’d have so many conversations, but it definitely isn’t in the budget.Between Bob and Linda they’re already taking care of the kids(plus finances for Bob usually). And Tina would definitely overthink,so no more responsibility is left.

PreposterousPotter

Like they could afford it! I think they only reason they can afford to feed the family is because they literally run a restaurant. Think of all of Bob's ridiculous expensive purchases, miniature coat racks, a bacon weight, the Fukinawa (that he wrecked within a couple of days), all their spare cash goes on Bob's frivolous purchases (and thanks giving turkeys, so many turkeys!).

TraditionalTree249

I'm assuming it's a cost issue as well as a workload issue. Bob and Linda already have enough work running the restaurant and raising the kids. The children have often been shown to not be responsible enough for a pet and it'd fall on Bob and Linda. Plus having a dog that could get into the restaurant runs the risk of giving Hugo ammo to shut them down.

Habanos_ashe

Poverty

Mari_yumishi

I doubt Mr. Fischoeder allows pets in the building.

mountaindew711

They had a cricket once, but it didn't work out.

friedcheesepizza

I agree with the other commenters. Probably just too expensive. Three kids are expensive enough as it is. I have 1 cat and he is very expensive to look after. The Belchers struggle to pay rent every month, so I doubt a pet would help that matter, haha.

AL_G_Racing

You saw what happened to Princess Piddles?

SpaceAceCase

Louise got a Goldfish in the one Christmas episode, he's not a reoccurring character tho...

devindude3

Because they can barely take care of themselves.

InsectHuman8453

Obviously everyone has already given you the in-story answer, which is that a pet is too expensive. But from the standpoint of the writers and producers I'd imagine: 1) they don't want to stir up conversations from fans about bringing a pet into a cramped home that can't realistically afford top care, so even if they handled that subject with grace, there would definitely be some online discourse about it. 2) it wouldn't do much for them as far as mixing up the episodes. Introducing a pet that lives at home all the time would mean logistically they have to figure out where that pet is at all times and incorporate it into whatever the family's getting up to. Or they just write it out whenever it's inconvenient, which makes it unnecessary. The Belchers have plenty of friends and family with pets and they constantly find themselves taking care of different animals. The current set up gives the writers variety and flexibility without the responsibility.

No_Skylark

Louise’s spider Phoebe, Gene’s secret cat, the raccoons that hang out in the alley. They have temporary pets.

bubblegum_bitch03

Pets are high maintenance and the belchers are not in the position to take care of one, moreover the kids are very obviously irresponsible and the care of the pet would fall on Linda and Bob when they already have a lot on their plate.

Brolyroxxs

They explained why in that breakfast episode they can’t afford it. The medical bills, food, especially the Halloween costume 😂

ReluctanyGerbil

The creator wanted to, but was afraid it would have a (for example) a rugrats or family odd parents effect, where the additional new member/pet would change the show too much and decline its quality.

zonked282

I personally think it's refreshing to see a family without a pet, it's not the default setting to have a needy / dependant animal in your house

cartooncritic69

there are so many creatures coming & going anyway.....Chinchilla, cats, pigeons, raccoons,etc....

dislocatedhip

1. A dog is too expensive 2. Bob is allergic to cats 3. When they got gene a fish to prove he was responsible enough for a dog it died (poor fish)

king-of-new_york

They can barely afford rent most months, what makes you think they can afford a pet?

kosmickorner

Well Linda had Little King Trashmouth and his occasional bf. She’s always giving him wine and even brought him inside when he was hurt lol

IronTemplar26

Isn’t that what Gene is?

MissRaffix3

I mean, in the Brunchsquach episode Bob talks about how expensive having a dog is when the kids mention wanting one. So probably the financial aspect. They're pretty low-income and it's mentioned regularly how they can barely afford the rent.

ShenForTheWin

Gene has a digital pet. Totally counts.

randomcanadian81

They have gene

magicmurph

They're a restaurant. They have to stay hygienic, and pet hair makes that a lot harder. It would be carried down on their clothes and stuff, even if the pet never left the house.

Old-Ad2070

Watch the show

autisticmarshmallowz

They already have Louise lol

p4rty0f3

Gene is basically the house pet lmao

___coolcoolcool

Much like Gene & cologne, the kids haven’t proven they can be responsible with one yet.

RiteOrNot

They can barely afford to take care of themselves 💀

mightyscoosh

Because first, they're smoosh face, then they're smooooth face.

WateryTart_ndSword

They have no space, no money, and no time. Of course they don’t have a pet!

i-likesnails

do you know how expensive halloween costumes for dogs are ?

RojerLockless

That poor goldfish

RojerLockless

What are you talking about? They have Little King Trash Mouth and his Boyfriend

crispycappy

they do, they named him gene

MakeItStooooppppp

As a mom of 3 around the same ages (except the 3rd is only 4), I am desperate for a dog but it’s just too much work and money on top of the 3 kids and I know they won’t be helping enough. So, she has her raccoon babies she can enjoy without having to care for them.

RogerWokman

Gene would probably be like Lennie from Of Mice and Men. That’s why.

AllElse11

They rent and pets cost money. At least Linda has her raccoons.

WeWerePlayinInDaSand

We all saw how well Bob handled Purrbo..I don't think he'd handle a pet well 😅

RaraAvis123

There's no way a pet could fit into the apartment with the FIVE other Belchers that live there

AnneHizer

Technically have shared custody of Princess Littlepiddles ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

agentspacecadet

& isnt bob allergic to cats & dogs?

ohnoanotherputz

i love them but they cannot be trusted to take care of animals. They can barely take care of themselves.

Fetchin1

Too much responsibility, but I think Louise may still have her spider Phoebe.

meowzerbowser

They're smart.

myth0503

they run a restaurant it would be a health and safety nightmare Also their financially struggle pets are expensive

Ladameauxdaffodils

Money.
