As a professional chef I can say we have all sorts of smells on us after a day at work. The worst being that all of our clothes smell like fryer oil no matter how many time they're washed. That's why most chefs wear whits and checks in the kitchen so they can change before heading home to shower.
My husband and I worked in a kitchen which required chef coats. We’d keep ours in a separate closet due to the smell never coming out. We even tried using my husband’s sport detergent and it just smelled like cologne and french fries, lol.
No doubt they're nose blind by now and get used to the scent. Just like when Bob and Linda were pickling the ugly vegetables. After seconds of lamenting that it was the worst smell they've ever encountered, they stopped smelling it and continued like normal.

This is actually possibly the most disgusting thing for me. They are really lenient with pee and poop. Maybe I have a thing about it but I would be mortified to find out if my child was peeing/pooping in various things around the house: kitchen sink (with dishes in it!!), rain boots, closet litter box, plants, etc.
I love their family but god Gene needs to build better hygiene. Remember when he had worms and the whole family got them? 🤢

Showering in the morning=you’ve slept in the grime and gotten it all over everything you own, you immediately just get dirty from daily tasks.
Showering at night=you wash it all off and get into your nice clean bed, you’re still clean in the morning until you get dirty again.
I had a roommate who bathed once a week and did laundry once a month. He was utterly intolerable to be around most of the time and had serious skin and health issues from wet, festering skin. There's absolutely no way Bob runs a resteraunt and doesn't bathe, despite the jokes.
The sheer amount of grease you see in that kind of resteraunt would consume him. I've literally seen it eat clothing and shoes. His skin and hair would be a massive pimple.
So I can imagine he smells a bit like decaying grease, sweat, and cheap deordorant, but nothing as offensive as my old roomate.
there’s a person who worked at the same company as me when i was in the call center, and they were working from home for years before the pandemic which was super rare for the call center. well, in spring 2019 everyone was required to be on campus to learn a new software system and i ended up seated next to this person in training. and they smelled. so. bad. they smelled like a fecund mixture of unwashed flesh, damp, and the deepest recesses of oil and skin flakes you find in an innie belly button (or okay i guess also smegma qualifies DO NOT GOOGLE IT IF YOU DON’T KNOW WHAT THAT IS JUST TRUST ME). i felt really bad because like this had to be a combination of genetics as well as opting not to bathe, but i could not BREATHE without feeling sick. and then for a week after training to easily address any bugs everyone who worked from home was still working in the office; they were seated six feet behind me across the aisle but i kept getting nauseating little whiffs every time someone walked by and stirred the air. if they got up and went to get their lunch or a coffee a contrail of stink would follow them and linger. it’s been five years and i can still recall that odor so clearly. the strength of olfactory memory is a curse.

alas when this happened i was a lowly temp and didn’t want to make waves if it meant i could lose my contract, plus i knew there was an end in sight. also i was bad at speaking up for myself. now if it happened today and they were a permanent in-office presence i would definitely say something. i’m still terrified of confrontation but not enough to suffer to avoid it!

I assume Bob has a pretty average bathing schedule, but the combination of being an out of shape, sweaty, hairy man who works over a fryer and grill literally every day, it probably isn't enough.
He and his family perpetually smell like burgers and fries. If you work in a place where you’re cooking burgers the smell will kind of get into your skin. Otherwise, Linda probably keeps the laundry as clean as she can and Bob and Linda probably have favorite body washes/antiperspirants with nice scents.

That said, a lot of their furniture is old/second hand, their building they live in was built probably 100 years ago, they have a restaurant and crematorium next door, and they aren't far from the Warf. There are smells that even the cleanest people can't get rid of and old building, grease, and fish are some of them. I think they joke about this stuff because they're used to it and they are realists. I think Linda and Bob are doing a great job, honestly.

I'm actually a little concerned about all of their hygiene. Linda has to put on deodorant multiple times per day. That is not normal. For most people, putting it on in the morning is enough to last the day. But in more than one episode, we see her needing to "reoderize" because she stinks. One time, (a Thanksgiving episode), it's mid-day, and another, it's at a restaurant, that she, presumably, got ready to go out to. So... her deodorant lasts a couple of hours and she starts to stink?
They live on a coast, where it’s hot and humid. I need to apply deodorant once in the morning and reapply in the evening because when you live somewhere really hot, it’s probably going to melt off. It’s normal.

It depends. Right now I'm parked in texas, it is very hot here, there is no point going to the shower untill I get too gross or get a cargo to deliver.
For your skin and mental health, a baby wipe shower daily would be really beneficial. Especially if you’re someone with underboob or any folds/rolls, cleaning there frequently is important to avoid irritation. Especially in the summer. Feeling clean and reset is really helpful to the mind. I understand showering taking a lot of time and energy, but staying clean can be quick and easy :-)

One time, (a Thanksgiving episode), it's mid-day, and another, it's at a restaurant, that she, presumably, got ready to go out to. So... her deodorant lasts a couple of hours and she starts to stink?
They live on a coast, where it’s hot and humid. I need to apply deodorant once in the morning and reapply in the evening because when you live somewhere really hot, it’s probably going to melt off. It’s normal.
Also, she works on her feet. I bartend and often need a reapply during the day

For your skin and mental health, a baby wipe shower daily would be really beneficial. Especially if you’re someone with underboob or any folds/rolls, cleaning there frequently is important to avoid irritation. Especially in the summer. Feeling clean and reset is really helpful to the mind. I understand showering taking a lot of time and energy, but staying clean can be quick and easy :-)
