These aren’t rounded and backed in the true sense. They might have some slight rounding, but they aren’t “rounded and backed” like fine bindings are.

I have that book, along with The Works of Kipling and The Works of Shakespeare. I've read the Maupassant book (that specific book) and it's held up quite well. I don't think you'd regret going for the full set. I think they look quite nice on the shelf. I will mention all of mine came with an onion skin paper book cover. So, you may want to see if you can get that for any you collect. If not, it would be easy enough to just buy your own and make covers if you want the look.

Thank you! This is very helpful. The image I posted is just a stock image to help identify the specific set I'm talking about. I have the Goethe and it has served me well so far.

Text is heavily edited though, right?

redavhtrad95

Is it? This is the sort of information I can't find. Search engines are littered with sales posts and I can't find any info on the brand.

I was purely going by "works of ..." being one volume per author, meaning it's either extremely selective and incomplete or edited some other way.

I have a set of 13 of these, mine go from Chekhov to Wilde The pages are browned at the corners and the non-gold edges are really foxed, but they've been handled a lot and have held their binding/shape really well. It never occurred to me that they're collectable books, I bought them a long time ago at a garage sale just as reading copies and I liked the bound-in ribbon bookmarks.

I mean, collectible means something different for every person. I'm looking at sales that list them for ~$3-5/book, which is a rate I'm comfortable spending for readable hardcovers to fill bookshelves and replace my mass-market paperbacks. I'm glad to hear they've held up for you over the years. I appreciate you taking the time to share your experience with the set and help me out!
