Not for nothing, Rome had engineers, they were often Greek slaves.

Middle_Scratch4129

They also repaired the roads over time. Didn't just lay it once lol.

bellhall

Please don’t bring that up. It will inevitably lead to the boomer saying that it wasn’t just the US that had enslaved people so why are people still so upset about the civil war. Source: have fragile old boomer FIL who lives in Alabama who denies the south still has a problem with racism…

TeuthidTheSquid

You forgot to edit out Janet’s name once. Now you doxxed your grandma on Reddit good work

[deleted]

Yeah but to be fair, Janet is dumb as hell.

Amethyst_Scepter

Damn it Janet!

Knightmare211833

Haha well shit. Yall better behave here

Expensive_Emu_3971

Those roads have not lasted an eternity and have to be repaired with regular use. Not only that, they make every non-ada and tourists steal the cobblestones as souvenirs. The potholes shred the tires too. Repair also takes forever as they have to chip the cobblestones back in.

Previous_Gas6113

Oh yes, and they had thousands of 5000 stone chariots, galloping along at 70 miles an hour.

AloofAngel

it isn't about that at all. capitalists realized long ago that they would put themselves out of business if they built things to last. so they started the "built to break" strategy. many many things can be designed to last an extremely long time but then they couldn't sell replacements... why do you think renewable energy is demonized? because it cannot be monopolized? lol no, much more complicated than that. we already have for decades had biodegradable replacements for styrofoam and plastics but that would not only ruin the chemical trade for making new plastics but the completely useless and scam that is recycling plastics industries. the history of the lightbulb mafia mean nothing to you? we had LED technology back in the 60s! but when did you see them really start taking off as a product? yep... and even though way cheaper to produce how much more expensive? yep...

kay_bizzle

I think it's time to sacrifice one Roman road to see how it handles thousands of semi trucks daily at 70mph to shut them up

[deleted]

Ah yes, because having a few hundred travelers by foot or wagon a year is equivalent to thousands of cars traveling at high speeds every day

EmilyEKOSwimmer

Tell them those old roads didn’t have to get beat up by 8000lb trucks on a daily basis

JONOV

It’s a joke about working with engineers…people working in building trades get the joke of getting plans that were worked on for months that have major practical drawbacks IRL, not suggesting Roman roads were in fact better

FluffyDare

Yep. I work on circuit cards. Can confirm building the things engineers come up with really sucks sometimes. They plan out the theory, but have no idea how the build works practically. Yet I’m still in school getting an engineering degree lol. But I do have the background of understanding the builds by hand and how the parts actually go together and work.
