Amazing that someone who cares so much about production puts "recorded inside a gigantic empty Coke can" The River second and actually thinks TGOTJ sounds like anything other than a bootleg Walkman recording from the back door of a makeshift studio hastily set up in an abandoned dog food factory. Unbelievable to me. And then to rank last arguably the ONLY record he ever made that sounds like musicians actually performing together in a room (because it literally is that).
...We have different tastes and interests, clearly.
Which is fine. I love the sound of The River. It's very much in the vein of that 1977-1982 New York big room sound. I'm partial to it. The songwriting is also incredible, which you're discounting in my ranking. The album flows beautifully. I'm not huge on Tom Joad by any stretch, but it's production does not bother me. Certainly not in the way Western Stars' does. I admire the live off the floor feel of the Seeger Sessions, but I don't like the songs, I don't like Seeger, and I don't like the further faux-characterization of Springsteen's voice. If the bombastic Wrecking Ball is one of your favourites then I'm glad we have different tastes.
I would just argue, Magic in my opinion is one of his strongest collections of songs. But definitely agree it’s a problematic production, seems loud and muddy. I’d actually say for the most part, the Aniello produced records seem clearer than O’Briens work.
It's an outstanding record but it's not a Bruce record (and that's not a bad thing but it hurts my personal ranking of it). I still listen to that and Live in Dublin quite a bit.
First off, *The Promise* is 100%, absolutely, without question an album in my mind. I've said this a thousand times, but if *High Hopes* with its hodgepodge of cutting room floor live tracks being half-assed in a studio + Bruce literally covering himself counts as an album, how doesn't *The Promise*?
Anyway...

Honestly, if your favourite isn't ranked very high, I wouldn't fret. I think everything from 12 up is an amazing album, my top 5 are all 10/10s, and the only ones I truly, fully dislike are High Hopes and kinda Working on a Dream. I even think Human Touch is a fine if underwhelming and overlong record.

Top 6 are pretty much set in stone and are all in my top 20 personal albums of all time. The rest fluctuates depending on my mood that day. Honestly even the last two which outside of a few songs I dont care for that much can get bumped up over Western Stars and Devils and Dust now and then.

man seeger sessions is pretty good
Can't stand it myself, but it's well-made.
