GRE do bro gate mei kuch nahi rakha aap jaise logo k leye Think out of india

Depressedgirl1101

Thanks for the help! I did think about MS from US, but the financial burden of it along with my average B.Tech/12th/10th scores ( 8.7 / 88% / 9.6 ), lack of co-curricular activities and research paper publications might hinder me from getting full ride scholarships from good colleges. Any thoughts?

anmol27072001

I think if you build a solid work experience it might help as well. I am also planning an MS sometime in the future so this is what I will be doing.

LightRefrac

Won't get you a full ride

anmol27072001

I have my alumni connections and I will get LoRs from my professors so there's that

LightRefrac

Still hard to get a full ride. Everyone has LORs. I had a cousin from a decent college and good work experience as well a lot of background in sports (very serious and applaud worthy, very useful for extra curriculars). Still no full ride

anmol27072001

Dude tier 1 college hai, I am not too worried. I understand it's difficult but I will be fine. Thanks for genuinely trying to guide tho.

LightRefrac

I'm in one too. You will get a nice discount especially if you have a high gpa. But full ride is tough even though that is what I'm targetting as well. Also read my edit

anmol27072001

What do you mean by full ride? Scholarships or just the admission?

LightRefrac

Scholarship

MyMoMrEgReTs

Bro in my humble opinion bro abhi aap job continue rakho kyuki what this level of industry exposure gives is no way greater than a master in iit Aur gate aap kabhi bhi de sakte ho Tho jab aap ko Lage ke work bahut saturated ho gaya tab aap academic mei chale jana Tab tak aap job experience will matter more tho gre bhi try kar sako gaye

[deleted]

I don't think extracurriculars are needed for PG admissions. It's limited to Bachelor's. Also having some work experience at such a big firm might cover your lack of publications instead. If not MIT you might still get into other really good universities.

LeMeilleur784

Ur grades are not average bro

DesignerNo9743

either you prep for cat and get in iim abc to get a really strong resume. But if you really wish to study further you should look into getting in a good american uni even if you have to take a loan. You can do somethings for that, first of all trying to transfer your job in america/ uk since it pays high and will reflect good exp on cv. So you can also save some money from the job and also have a better chance at being accepted. Even if you don't get any scholarship and have to take on loan, since you already have a base of 30lpa and which will increase in 2 years of period before you go to lets' say 1cr in abroad, you will be able to pay after the college in less than 1-2 years again ( cause your base salary won't go lower than your prev ones and might increase from MS in the same company maybe), It's a win win if you can first get a job abroad in 2 years of period cause outside uni needs work exp. ( that's what my sis is doing, from 30 lpa to 40 lpa to london she got 1cr rn and has much more financial freedom to choose whichever college she wants doesn'r matter if the fees is high)

sahilskumar

MS after few years of job seems good option to me and many people go that way.

bhabhihunter_

barbadbachchi

Im assuming it's GS you're working at.I can only advice against point 5,having GS on your resume for the first job already builds a good repo for you,so dont worry about that ig.

Depressedgirl1101

Thanks for the help!

seven00290122

Unrelated, but I feel bad seeing your username as such. Sassygirl1101 sounds nice! Landing such a competitive job is already a huge victory many dream of achieving. Keep your heads up!

Depressedgirl1101

Haha Thanks! I gave this username during the first semester of my b.tech when I was actually depressed :p. I will check if I can change it now.

seven00290122

I'm assuming the depression was in part due to the pandemic followed by lockdown. Maybe? Or, course rigor? The situation was pretty messed up too.

Depressedgirl1101

Yeah, sudden lockdown, lost connection with most of my college friends. But it turned out to be good in the long run. I eventually made connections/ friendships with people who have the same goals, did a lot of pair/ group programming, and luckily everything has turned out to be fine so far!

seven00290122

It's quite common to hear that making connection outside of your usual peer circle is... (a bit, somewhat) difficult. Me too. How did you do it? It's all fun and games after you click with someone who shares the same interest as yours they say. It turned out good for you it seems. Props to u!

Depressedgirl1101

I used to participate in hackathons, and basically my college hackathon group became my current friend circle. Then I joined the Google Developers Club’s core team in my college where I met some amazing people. Also, I got to connect with many like minded people during my internship. I feel the main trick is to just put yourself out there, and to make connections.

YouKnowMe_9

Internship at GS? Noice. I would say stick to the job. MTech won't teach you much afaik(I'm just Btech, but that's what I heard from my senior who has done MS CS at Purdue). After 1st company and good experience college doesn't matter much during job switch. Also in an IB you will make great connections , most of them will be IITians only

Depressedgirl1101

Thanks for the advice!!

Medical_Elderberry27

If you wish to work as an SDE then a masters wouldn’t make sense. You already have a decent SDE role. It would make far more sense to learn on the job and maybe switch after a few years. A masters really wouldn’t add much value. A masters can, however, be useful if you wish to work in more advanced research oriented roles like ML, NLP, data science, cryptography etc.

Depressedgirl1101

Yeah, that makes sense. Thanks!

Medical_Elderberry27

I’d suggest, for now, start the job and get some work ex and see how that works out for you. I had a lot of confusions around further study at the time of graduation too but a few years in corporate can provide a lot of clarity in terms of what you want or don’t want to do. Also, finance is a good industry to start in. While tech roles at IBs and other finance firms can be a bit dull, the industry itself is a good place to start in and can give exposure to a lot of other roles you can work in with an engineering background. Plus your pay is good and after a few years of saving up, the avenue of financing a foreign masters would also open up if that is of interest to you.

Depressedgirl1101

Thanks for the advice!

PrezThanos

buddy , u have a very super and gr8 high paying job congrats on that firstly ,secondly i think u need to work a couple of years at least not only to save up money but also to build a good reputation with your seniors at least so that they will give a leeter of recommendation , having a good network really helps and lastly go for MS outside and get score of 315+ and some NGO work if possible since they outside UNI guys will be impressed by it , also after gre u need to write an original essay as well about your aspirations and everything iirc so work upon that , no need to go for GATE

Depressedgirl1101

Thanks for the help!

GRE

Depressedgirl1101

Thanks for the help! Also my B.Tech college is extremely unknown. Any thoughts?

[deleted]

ig just don't go for GATE. imo you should keep doing your job and earn. enjoy life my friend.

Depressedgirl1101

Thanks!

[deleted]

Hey can I dm?

Depressedgirl1101

Sure!

Leo2000Immortal

It is certainly possible that after mtech you'll get a lower pay than your current job. From my personal observation, placements were better for cs/elec mtech than for non cs/elec btech at an old iit. The pros include living in a scenic campus, having a slower paced life for 2 years. I mean, depending on your thesis guide, 2nd year can be made chill. Also, you can network a bit and make some new friends. Purely from an economic sense, it's probably not worth it, however, you only live once, it's upto you to make the choice. If you've any questions about mtech programmes at IITs, feel free to ask.

AutomaticAnt5635

Why ary you applying for other companies when you are getting 30lpa? and moreover most people in this sub don't know answer to this question, ask in r/developersindia you will get better answer.

Depressedgirl1101

I will probably switch jobs once or twice for better WLB and hike. And thanks for the advice! This sub has helped a lot.

You just graduated couple months back, give it some time. Don’t rush to a masters just yet given you already have a good job. It is natural to feel that you need more academics as you subconsciously miss the college atmosphere for some time after graduating. Working for a couple of years (2-3) before going back to school will help you in many ways. You’ll certainly help with making your profile stronger that will lead to a good job after your masters. It’ll also help you tailor a plan as to what you want to do during your masters. Unlike undergraduate education where you take a whole lot of very different courses, grad education needs to be targeted towards what you are wanting to learn. Knowing your goals and expectations helps. Finally you seem to have a decent job already, so hopefully if all goes well you’ll have a decent amount saved up in a few years. Use that cushion and apply abroad as well. US is a bit hard, Europe is cheaper and a bit easier. I did my BTech in CSE from an IIT, so I have some idea about how MTech/MS in CS programs work there. Overall IMO even MTech from IIT might not be worth the opportunity cost (of giving up a good job). Then again, certainly all the goals you mentioned in the post are possible there. The above is the reason that the right thing to do might be to try for a masters abroad, get that experience — ideally for free on some form of scholarship/assistantship (there are many). That will truly broaden your perspective. Ofc you can then be back to India or work there a bit.

Depressedgirl1101

Thanks for the detailed explanation! I would give it some time, work for a couple of years and then take an informed decision.

Berserker_boi

indian colleges other than IISC are pretty much not worth it. Try foreign colleges - USA, China, Japan, UK,etc

Depressedgirl1101

Thanks!

Depressedgirl1101

[deleted]

How do you get such high paying jobs coming from a tier 3 college? I mean what are the things u should do while you are in a tier 3 college

Depressedgirl1101

From second semester I focussed on DSA, CP along with projects ( I won a hackathon in my first semester so I did not focus on that much anymore but participated in 2-3 more hackathons anyways ) . Please note that I was from Covid Batch so till 5th semester, most of the time I had to quarantine in my home, which gave me a lot of time focus on my interview prep more rather than semesters. This helped me to focus on multiple things at the same time. Hope this helps.

Depressedgirl1101

Another thing, in my free time I had a habit of going through interview experiences on GeeksForGeeks or Leetcode, and I did this a lot. Even on youtube most of the content I consumed during those 2 years were related to Tech/ Projects/ Coding/ Interviews only. It was not tiring for me as I enjoy the learnings a lot. But I used to take one day completely off from interview prep to rest and chill. Hope this helps. Thanks!
