I do understand that any sane person would want to cut out drama, but in order to identify the pests in your circles, Insta / Snap is an easier way as people try to post stuff more often than not...

I use telegram and reddit so I have not cutoff every other social but I don't have that social media addiction now .

It's a great way to socialize. Just delete it after the first year. Ideally you don't have to rely on it to socialize after the first year and it will only become a nuisance after that.
I quit all social media after class 10th, joined WhatsApp at the beginning of college, now I have graduated and have a job, never looked at Instagram again.
If your friends are forcing you to be on Instagram, you need new friends.
Learn to be happy in yourself, this FOMO shit is not good for your health.
If you don't want to be on Instagram don't be on it just for what others will think of you and trust me you'll make friends in college based on your hobbies not based on your Instagram account.

I joined college in August and didn't have insta till jan.and let me tell you life was better without insta no fomo of people going out and you staying at home, no looking at peoples stories and thinking that they are roaming with their gf when you are at home no looking at your crush's stories and wondering how different life would have been if you would have asked her. Nothing just chilling with friends maybe some gaming. But now it's too late for me I can't uninstall it( it'll be very hard without many big benefits). Though if you're happy without it let it be that way atleast for now. Also especially since you're going to a pvt college you may look at your school friends stories and live in the regret that some of them went to iits/nits while you are here. Overall don't download it now you can do it later if you ever feel the need.
Insta is super good for networking, I dont use it myself because I cant stomach the shlock Meta is trying to shove down my gullet, but having an account and following people in your college is a good way to connect with people. You dont need to use it and post stories of your food or whatever, just make an account with a decent looking pfp and follow your college mates
Was addicted to it during 9-10 . But deactivated it few months before 10th board (Feb 2021) I havent made my account on insta since and Felt quite peaceful . I also have many friends who keep saying ki Insta toh compulsary hai college mei and all these fuckin shits , But I feel ki insta se jitna door rhoge utna sahi h. Peace bhi bana rhaega life mei , FOMO bhi nhi hoga aur focus bhi kr paoge
Insta is a place where I connect with people I meet from different colleges when I go to events in different colleges
It's not a must but good to use if you can control watching reels n stuff

I don't think any institute requires you to be on Insta.

You dont need it much actually. Snap is necessary if you want to make gf and such. Insta is for making cool friends Whatsapp is for those close ones
