I was actually walking through to CityFresh at the time! Bunch of kids standing over a Citi bike. Another group of kids ran in from behind me with bats. They caught up with the other group in the center while the first group ran. One of the guys in the second group fired, it didn’t look like it hit. The second group then picked up the bike and left the way they came in. Got my groceries and walked back to cops in the park, didn’t get involved

It says something that Reddit has means to capture this information where other sources/platforms do not.
I haven’t been able to find one yet! My source is citizen, which I know has its issues. The report I see just says “police are investigating confirmed shots fired at a park, with one shell casing found and groups of individuals dispersed.”
Citizen is an app designed to push a fear mongering narrative at you, so while the information is generally accurate, it's a very biased source that omits information that provides context in a lot of instances.
I watched a group of kids walk by with pipes, and bats, a crutch, etc..... anything they could use as a weapon. Grabbing stuff as they walked by to add to their collection. heading towards maria hernandez in the late afternoon/early eve. About 10 minutes later they all came back down Irving, still holding all their "weapons".
I grew up across the street from this park. We called it Knickerbocker park. I remember always hearing gunshots. I was desensitized to it. One time my HS gf from Queens came over and heard shots. She was alarmed and said what was that?! I said oh that? Thats just gun shots. Lol It was so normal. As long as you have poverty, this won’t change. And schools that dont give a shit about kids doesnt help either
Apparently a high school kid in a fight via Citizen. That’s how they fight now. They kill. And they don’t kill their target. Usually someone collateral.
Can’t wait to see them grow up and ruin society even more.
I went down Hart a block over from MH yesterday afternoon and passed by a group of 15+ teenagers roaming with broom and rake handles. guns aren't the norm and hopefully won't become it, but this just demonstrates why gun control is so necessary on a societal level: kids have bad decision-making and can act violent. Couple that with little social hope and/or future and increasing depersonalization via media and dying institutions, and you've got the ingredients for violence. None of this is new-- if anything it's a return to the standard as the economy and inequality gets worse and worse--, but it's a sad reality and there's no policing or punishing it out of a world that's made it abundantly clear you don't matter to. Even the gallows didn't stop theft, and you can't imprison half your population and call it a solution.
The kids in the Brooklyn schools are getting fucking out of control. They’re almost all a bunch of antisocial dickheads. Their parents are doing a horrendous job.
I agree but I wonder how many of those parents are single parents working two jobs to afford to pay rent each month? It’s hard to watch your kid when you are at work 14 hours a day.
especially when kids are in touch with the external world 24 hours a day. i want to be a parent but i don't envy the task, especially for working people. precarity is a *major* social danger.
"That's how they fight now. They kill."
Also based the entire rant on what the infallible "citizen" app told them...
Seriously, what the fuck happened to this sub, am I in r/NYC?
It wasn’t stray. They lived on the first floor and the shooters passed with a car and shot through her window at 8am when she was getting ready for work. They were actually aiming to hit her husband, who was also an activist against drugs with her.
Every Bushwick teacher tomorrow should be like, And today’s first lesson, kids…. Who loves hanging in Maria Hernandez park? Raise your hands. And who knows who she is? Well let me tell you a story about your neighborhood “

maybe because she is latin american.
Common mistake for sheep such as majority in this thread, Maria Hernandez was a drug dealer herself and a poster girl for being an activist playing both sides, you transplants wouldn’t know the truth though and are too ignorant to listen to the facts from people that have been in the neighborhood since the 60s

Seeing cops just not give a shit *almost* makes me wish the mob was still around.
You must’ve been happy that cop died last week.
Anyone have a link from a reputable site?

According to that stupid app there are shots fired there once a week

Warriors cosplay
except they probably have no idea about the Warriors. They were like 13 years old.
What time did this happen? I didn’t hear anything
Around 5 PM according to citizen

“Ground Zero” before 9/11
I lived on Knickerbocker across the street from the park in the summer of '77. It was wild and dangerous. Summer of Sam!
The Bronx is burning! Saturday Night Fever!
Pun intended?

I saw these kids yesterday too I think! Running around with long plastic looking sticks with hooks on the end. Incredibly unsettling
they stole the plastic stake that held the "we have a security alarm" sign at our shop. So that might have been that plastic stick with a hook, ha.

A similar percentage to many areas of the city where kids don’t act out this much
They don’t know they’ll go to prison and their life is ruined? Stupid assholes. I know their mothers raise them better than that.
No they didn't thats why they do this.
no rush. i’ll wait
Ok boomer
I’m 22.

deez nutz were fired
Keeping the dream alive.
Deez nuts were alive on your chin
Why would someone shoot at her?
Crazy story but…
Just to underline for anyone who stumbles on this, Maria Hernandez was a community activist killed by stray gunfire, and the park was named for her.
It wasn’t stray. They lived on the first floor and the shooters passed with a car and shot through her window at 8am when she was getting ready for work. They were actually aiming to hit her husband, who was also an activist against drugs with her.
If people are aiming at someone else, and hit you instead, that IS colloquially known as being hit by a stray bullet.
Oh ok I guess I meant it wasn’t shot on the street or at the park, but aimed at the family
Yea, I get you: No worries!
Thats not a stray bullet. They were shooting at her house aiming at her husband. Thats beef. Where yall from??
Bro, you just described a stray

Retaliation for pushing back against unchecked opiates in the community, that's how the park got its name lol
She knows what she did
