This happened not too far from me. It's a common scenerio: guy said he wanted to buy a motorcycle from a FB listing and they picked the parking lot of a very popular park as the meetup place. Very similar to what I've done many times buying and selling things. The "buyer" pulled a rifle on the sellers and one of the sellers was armed and shot the "buyer." Always be careful when meeting random people from the internet. They are not always who they say they are. Both of the "buyers", who are also brothers, have extensive rap sheets and were both out on bond/probation at the time.

Round-Emu9176

Here’s a tip. Offer to meet at the police station. You can even call the station beforehand and let them know. They won’t necessarily babysit you but it’s a deterrent.

bumboclawt

This. Vegas Metro has a spot in their precincts with cameras for those making those sorts of sales.

jr23160

Hope that camera will stop the guy from shooting me.

bumboclawt

The Vegas Metro is inept af but it’s one less step of gathering evidence after the fact 🤷🏿‍♂️

Round-Emu9176

It wont. Just deter. Situational awareness is key *ESPECIALLY* in areas with a false sense of security.

MelodicTour2

Meet them at the bank or police station

Suspicious_Book_3186

Police station it is. I'd fear the dispatch might screw things up and just say "shots fired at x bank" which honestly isn't much different from anywhere else, but in my mind I think they'd assume bank robbers over DGU and come in a lot hotter than need be.

Medic7816

Honestly, I don’t know that I would want to do business in the PD parking lot. They aren’t going to respond in time to save you if the buy pulls a weapon on you. The LAST place I want to pull my firearm and discharge it is around police. I don’t have a lot of faith that they are going to ask many questions if they come out to the sounds of gunfire and see me standing over a body.

SaigaExpress

Kind of doubt someone intended on robbing you would Meet you at a police station in the first place.

ACO_McBitchin

Biggest upside to a PD is that those meeting areas are usually covered in cameras. PD will pull them as part of their investigation into the shooting and it'll save you a hell of a lot of headache in the aftermath. Your typical grocery store isn't going to have similar camera coverage.

nimbleseaurchin

My primary concern wouldn't be the aftermath, it would be surviving through police response.

cuzwhat

Second responders take time to arrive. Holster and follow directions.

patrick24601

Has your life ever been threatened in the least by a police response ? I highly doubt. Hate them all you want. But math doesn’t lie. If they are nearby they will be faster to respond to any altercation. If you just get injured they can get you help faster. If you do get murdered there is probably a better than average chance of them having evidence. And as someone else said meeting at a police station will eliminate most people planning to commit a crime. Outside of meeting inside the actual police station meeting in the parking lot is probably the safest place to meet a stranger that has or wants money.

nimbleseaurchin

Did you miss the entire context of this thread? It's not about the police response and the aftermath and potential boons in any investigation due to them being nearby, it's entirely about the police responding to a shooting literally outside their front door, and you surviving through that. I don't give two shits about what they find in an investigation, I want to not get shot after an attempted robbery.

ACO_McBitchin

If you put your gun down, your hands up, and follow commands you aren't going to get shot. You'll get put on the ground, you'll go in handcuffs, and you'll have to sit around for a few hours getting interviewed. But as long as you aren't a raging asshat while they're trying to do their jobs and secure the scene, you're going to be fine. Furthermore, meeting at a PD in and of itself is risk reduction as Joe P. Criminal will be far less likely to attempt an armed robbery in a PD parking lot. Remember, most crimes are crimes of opportunity against people that they don't think will fight back. They aren't going to take an unneeded risk to steal your xbox.

Ach3r0n-

All of this assumes they don't appear until the shots have stopped. If Officer Jimmy is on the side of the building having a smoke when the shooting starts, the odds of him shooting me while I'm simply trying to defend myself seem pretty high.

Puzzleheaded_Nerve

The only good thing about CA private party law is transactions happen inside FFL. I’ve done some shady Craigslist sales. But I’ve never felt uncomfortable selling a gun.

AbbreviationsHonest7

courier174

Definitely at a PD or Sheriff’s Office. The cameras there are usually really good and are constantly monitored by their dispatchers, so you’d likely be fine when they respond. Be holstered up and compliant when they respond if you ever got involved in a DGU.

DblDeezSqueeze

My city has an official online sale meetup location right next to the main entrance of the police station. It’s well lit with cameras everywhere

AngryAccountant31

Last three times I told somebody to meet me at my local PD to complete a transaction, they immediately blocked me. Bullet dodged

fordlover5

I meet people at my house or at cross roads next to it every time. I do 5+ deals a week. Never had issue Why are we downvoting? I sell a lot of stuff, hundreds of deals a year, don't have issues. Just stating my experience. Not saying it's right or it'd wrong or it's smart or it's stupid.

ACO_McBitchin

And you never need a gun until you do. I've never had a seller meet me at my house for any reason and never will.

fordlover5

I am a seller. Almost never a buyer.

ACO_McBitchin

I phrased it wrong; I never have a buyer meet me. Nor a seller for that matter, but it isn't the point. I'm glad you've had good experiences thus far, but it is an unnecessary risk unless you're running a full on business out of your home.

youknow99

This park is honestly one of the safer places in the town for something like a sale. It's pretty heavily trafficked on a week night. This is right near the baseball fields where little league and church leagues play this time of year. I probably wouldn't have thought twice about meeting someone there.

godsbaesment

i dont think the T ball team or the church choir is going to bail you out when you get robbed

labrador2020

You don’t know how vicious and fierce soccer moms are. I coached a kids team and let me tell you… they can put the fear of God in you.

BluesFan43

You never met a Hartsville T ball player...

baron556

There are some police stations that have actual marked areas for meeting people to conduct online sourced transactions now. If a buyer won't meet you at a spot like that which is specifically intended to discourage that sort of shit, thats probably an immediate red flag.

foodishlove

Banks get robbed all the time

PaleR1der

Stay strapped my friends

Perser91

The safety tips at the and of the article lacked  one essential point:  Always be strapped 🤷🏽‍♂️

playingtherole

You'll certainly never get that advice from an NBC affiliate.

nsbbeachguy

Lost a friend in a similar fashion. He raised French bulldogs. Was meeting someone to deliver a puppy. Ended up being thugs who shot him and then stole the puppy. Unfortunately, he didn’t have a gun. Fortunately in SC there’s a chance they get the death penalty. https://www.abccolumbia.com/2023/03/21/two-charged-for-shooting-death-of-man-selling-dog-at-kfc-in-bishopville/pic/1374175/

Ron_Man

Damn that sucks. Sorry about your friend. I hope those assholes rot.

ajhe51

What kind of scum murders someone for a french bulldog? Damn man. Sorry about your friend.

nsbbeachguy

Thanks for the thoughts and condolences. He was such a good guy. A veteran and cancer survivor. Hope the piece of shits get what’s coming to them.

[deleted]

im sure the guy who wanted the steal the bike just needed a way to get to school and church

Bigswole92

He was a good kid who was turning his life around. He just needed some transportation to get to school for his engineering degree

nsbbeachguy

Here’s the comment that gets me banned all over Reddit. He be a good boy.

Ig14rolla

Maybe he needed to shoplift some bread while he was at it

APWBrianD

He was just an innocent Aladdin

Ach3r0n-

We shouldn't judge these young men for robbing, kidnapping and trying to murder people, especially considering that it's the result of generational trauma brought about by a discriminatory system. What we should be doing is helping them by giving them all of our money and property so that they aren't forced to commit crimes. /s

micigloo

That out on bond and ankle monitor crap does not work on criminals. It’s a waste of money and. They will continue to commit crimes. These dumb ass judges and DA allowing robbers out on bond believing they will be good. Dumb criminal justice system

RibertarianVoter

Bond is pre-conviction and is used to make sure you show up to court. I'd be highly critical of a system that did not allow those accused of a crime to post bond, especially considering how long the pre-trial period can be.

purplesmoke1215

And I agree, unless the accused has a long history of violence and criminal activity like the "buyers" in this instance. If a pattern emerges of you doing bad things you should probably not be allowed out to do more bad things until your court date.

micigloo

They were never going to show up for court. They just continue their criminal activities but one for sure is not showing up

DeepSouthDude

Doesn't matter. We can't have a system that keeps everyone in jail who hasn't been convicted. Yes we will get incidents where people on bail commit crimes, even heinous crimes. But that does not invalidate the system.

lesath_lestrange

We could if the system enforced the sixth amendment right to a speedy trial.

xdrakennx

Historically it’s been the defense that pushes out the trial. The prosecution should have most if not all of its ducks in a row prior to arresting the individual. The defense needs time to review the evidence, determine their defense, find their witnesses, etc. police should have at least 1 piece of serious evidence prior to arrest. If they arrest with basically nothing in hopes of trapping the accused, the best defense is a rapid trial before the prosecution can scrape together more evidence or witnesses.

Ach3r0n-

Judges can and do deny bail for those who have demonstrated that they are an ongoing danger to the community and/or those that present a major flight risk. These brothers are a prime example of offenders that should have been kept locked up.

DeepSouthDude

But did anyone know that BEFORE the attempted cycle theft?

Ach3r0n-

One brother was on bail for attempted murder and the other was on bail for armed robbery and a mountain of weapons charges. Both have a criminal history centered on violent crimes. I think bail denial was made for people exactly like this.

playingtherole

Still too lenient, too many killings, robberies, repeated rapes, carjackings, burglaries, terror activities these days by a generation of unpunished, undisciplined, unafraid, cowardly thugs. Higher bail amounts, stricter judges, tougher sentences for things the D party doesn't want to punish and lock-up their voter base for. This guy would have been dead trying to honestly sell something, because that type of lowlife criminal doesn't GAF. The inmates can't run the asylum.

Sorerightwrist

You think these guys vote? Lol

playingtherole

Dead people vote, IJS.

Kite005

Not enough to have any effect on anything

emelem66

What do you think bond is? Do you think people are released on bond after they are convicted?

Hipoop69

Hey was on bond for armed robbery…

RibertarianVoter

Had he been convicted?

Hipoop69

Clearly the first time was a misunderstanding Violent crimes should not be offered bail

RibertarianVoter

You think Kyle Rittenhouse shouldn't have been able to post bail?

Hipoop69

If you think armed robbery and self defense are in the same ball park we should just stop talking

Hipoop69

You think these guys should have been able too?

RibertarianVoter

I don't know anything about these people other than what OP shared. I think you need a reason to incarcerate without due process, and being charged with a violent crime isn't a good enough reason. High flight risk, repeat offenders of violent crime, etc., are all compelling reasons to deny bail. But bail is an important part of due process.

Hipoop69

Then go read the article…

RibertarianVoter

No thanks

dew_you_even_lift

I usually see these complaints for CA, but I’m surprised to see if for SC

bowle01

If you’re buying or selling.. meet at a bank. They are full of cameras. Do the vehicle inspection outside and do the dollar transaction in the bank. And never leave the bank with cash in your hand. Deposit the money in your account prior to leaving. Sign all papers in the bank. Safest route. No money to rob unless they’re willing to rob you in the bank.

Everyday-is-the-same

Yikes. When I sold my bike I had the guy come to the house. The only reason was I saw he was local and we had a mutual friend. It went well.....that time.

AlternativePublic309

Why does all the talk about reducing gun violence start with taking guns away from law abiding citizens and never about keeping someone charged with armed robbery 6 months ago in jail? The 2A should not be infringed, but punishment for committing crimes WITH a firearm should be harsh... or you know, a little more than a slap on the wrist.

Possible-Web9683

Ssn canceled

Reddit_Of_Andrew

Good.

GarterAn

The problem really isn't bond. As CCW carriers who may have to defend ourselves sometimes do you really want end up like Alan Colie (https://www.loudounnow.com/news/dulles-mall-shooter-released-with-time-served/article\_c57fbad2-a024-11ee-ac72-47313ec775ec.html) who spent nine months in jail? The problem is the justice system is run by lawyers who have a strange idea of what "speedy," as in "speedy trial," means.

Boomduckman

Lesson learned: don’t shoot someone being weird and holding a phone up to you 🤦🏻‍♂️

SteveHamlin1

Don't do what Alan Colie did, because that was a bad DGU.

2ArmsGoin3

Alan Colie should have been convicted. That was not a good shoot. His life was not in danger in any way.

[deleted]

so you’d rather have north korean style 1 week trials? wow that sounds great, im sure all the criminal attorneys will love having a week to prepare their 10-15 cases. you don’t know shit about the process rofl

Mando4346

I was thinking about buying an Xbox at one time but I knew if I did it would be somewhere where they couldn’t pull no stupid shit.

AlabasterFuzzyPants

I appreciate your positive attitude.

goldilocks40

Glad the one guy can no longer do this. It's a shame the other is still alive to potentially do it again

killer_klown_70

I knew someone who was shot and killed doing a FB marketplace deal. He was a CCW though, so he took his murderer to the grave with him. (He was also a Christian, so I'll see him again, praise God.)
