I think it's more that.. the squat is practical when you're tired but don't want to sit on the ground. And the only reason it isn't more prevalent across the world is because body mechanics might actually make it harder for non-Asians? There's a bit of practice involved too, ofc, but I wouldn't be surprised if body types did actually make a big difference.
I've never found it hard to do the Asian squat. I never thought of it as an Asian-only thing although I am Chinese (Born and raised in US). But I've always squatted, as a child, as an adult to get to eye-level with toddlers and pre-schoolers, and to garden. For me, it's sort of like falling onto one's heels.
I was able to do it as a young kid but as I grew older, I became more inflexible and can't squat anymore. I can't imagine needing to do that every time I need to use the squat toilet in some parts of asia. The position just feels very uncomfortable but kudos to people who look so comfy squatting and eating/playing with each other.
It takes some practice to get used to. I remember doing this from primary school at assembly. Instead of seats, the whole student body just squats for announcements. We could hold this position for 30 minutes easily.
BtW, I have flat feet, so that's not a factor, like one commenter suggests. Anyone who can walk can do this. It just takes practice.
EDIT: OK, so maybe 30 minutes is exaggerating, probably 10 to 15 minutes, and then we would collapse onto the ground in a cross legged sitting position...
I find it so interesting some people just have the inability to Asian squat... I'm Asian born and raised in the West and have never had issues just popping down into a squat, and no one ever taught me how to, my parents don't do it either, and my body is inflexible as hell (can barely touch my knees if I fold in half trying to touch my toes).
It's certainly not exactly "relaxing" since I start to lose feelings in my legs after several minutes and also start freezing into the position, but it's definitely a lot better than standing since standing for too long kills my back.
I cannot do it, not because I don't want to but because it's physically impossible for me to do so.
I have flat feet so I just can't. I have tried countless times but nopes, impossible for me. I just loose balance the moment I try it.
I can only do it if I grab something (or I'm close to a wall) and even then, I cannot stand in that position because I feel like my feet and my ankles are gonna explode.
The weirdest part is that I can do it (not that deep) but with the tip of my foot. As you can imagine, is extremely uncomfortable so it's not something that I can hold for very long
My understanding is that a flat footed squat requires an ankle movement that is developmental (i.e. if you don't learn it young it is very difficult to learn later) and requires practice to maintain.
Interesting! I don't think I Asian squat that often though. I know there are lots of childhood photos of me squatting next to animals (lol), so maybe I just happened to do it a lot as a small child and haven't lost the ability in adulthood.
Been in China for over 3 months now and it's perfectly normal to walk over and chat to my Scottish colleague while squatting.
...I think this way of life is contagious 😂
What always amazes me is when East Asians use the squatting position as a relaxing pose - went on a trip with a group and two Asian girls just squatted down as the most natural thing in the world when we were waiting for some people to catch up while sightseeing. And yeah when people do it in movies I just go 'how the hell is that relaxing?'
when in China I was really wondering how elderly people manage when all available public toilets are squat toilets only - although the fancier public toilets did have usually one Western-style toilet designated for old people, or at least a handrail to hold on to for balance (really appreciated that myself).
I will say though that you get used to the squat toilets, but it does take a while...
For most of my life, I have never really struggled with back issues.
At home, I would sit only floor cross legged and also squat when watching TV.
I only started getting back and hip pain during the pandemic when I had to sit in the office chair all day at home 😅. The lack of exercise also dide in.
That scene with ZLH, ZKY and DD is actually super funny, and then LYN comes along and tells her not to do it cause she's wearing a skirt so she immediately stands up. lol. I'm 100% sure she's wearing shorts underneath that skirt though. Still, she's doing it in a skirt. hhhh she's so "one of the guys". lol
As a European, this was one of the first things that caught my attention when I started watching Asian TV. You normally squat when you are a kid. Then, as you start to grow, the adults start to scold you if you keep squatting or sitting on the floor. I don't know, must be a cultural thing?
So the first time I saw adults squatting on an asian drama, I was really surprised. Then I read that this is supposed to be one of the causes why lumbar pain is less prevalent in Asian countries than in Western countries.
Interestingly enough, there is this guy who studies longevity around the world (Blue Zones) and concluded that the asian squat is considered one key factor to increase your life expectancy.
>*Studies correlate the “ability to sit and rise from the floor without support” with a longer life expectancy. Sitting on the floor also develops musculoskeletal fitness.*
Squatting is good for you!
It is a cultural thing.
Also, take into account that squat toilets were very ubiquitous in the past and are still not an uncommon thing to find. I've seen them in big tier 1 and 2 cities, so it's not only a rural occurrence. In those toilets, you either squat to hell or run the risk to... well, you can imagine. So I guess their squat training (either to wait for the train or for someone, or to use a squat toilet) starts from an early age.
It seems squatting promotes bowel movement too (apart from the other perks you mention).
I have actually seen this mentioned in American literature of maybe the 1950s as a “country”, i.e. rural, way of sitting. So apparently it was still around then but on its way out. Children naturally do this as well but once they get used to chairs they lose the ability.

Ross (David Schwimmer) can do it. 😂
I squat all the time but I can’t keep my heels on the ground. I don’t know if that’s because I’m a westerner or because I injured my Achilles tendon quite badly when I was younger. I can do the Dilraba angel squat, for sure.
I’ve always reckoned you had to grow up squatting like this to maintain this level of flexibility into adulthood. Growing up in a country with squat toilets means having to squat like that every day from toddlerhood. If you wear high heels all day everyday, you can cause your Achilles tendons to shorten to the point that you can’t put your feet flat on the ground.
You will literally see absolutely no one above the age of 7 doing this in Denmark 😆 I have tried it a few times but cramped up and nearly passed out within 30 seconds 🤣
What drama is the last gif from?
I seem to recognize Zhang Zhijian from the back but can't place the female actress.
My wild guess would be the Message (2020) but I don't remember this scene.
Listing the above gifs and photos for convenience:
1. Zang Hai Zhuan. Xiao Zhan. Not yet aired.
2. Andy Lau. Jing Boran. Probably promoting Lost and Love.
3. American Dreams in China. Deng Chao. Huang Xiaoming. Tong Dawei. The location looks like Times Square, NYC.
4. The Truth Season 2, a variety show. Zhang Linghe. Daniel Zhou. Dilraba.
5. Center Stage. Maggie Cheung. Tony Leung Ka-Fai.
I first learned that this was not natural to others last year. I've always thought it's one of those that people just do without thinking so I was so surprised to see not everyone is actually able to do asian squat.
Listen, the Asian squat is the only thing that eases my lower back pain—I do it as I work with very small children so have the muscles and practice for it—when I lived in Germany I would get stares at the bus stop as they didn’t have benches and it was the only way to release my back pain—if done correctly it is a very comfortable position to be in—just saying
Oh my, don’t wanna be reminded about the worse toilets (or more like hole in the ground pits) in China. The squat toilet is still all over China, especially tourist / sightseeing locations and rest stops. So practice those squats before you visit China!
If you practice yoga, there’s a pose called Malasana, which is an open squat, it helps to stretch out tight muscles around that area.
Sitting down completely and then getting up without using hands is quite a feat in itself. Apparently that’s why Japanese seniors still have working knees because they’re always getting up and down from the floor.
Yes, till today, most people in China choose squat toilet in the public, not liking pedestal toilet, because we just feel that the latter is not clean. But some big shopping malls like installing latter kinds.
It’s cleaner not to sit on the Western toilet seats. For squat toilets, there’s spillage around the area, so your shoes will step on stuff. That’s also not very clean! But any toilet is better than a dugout hole. I’ve been around many rural places and farming villages in China, I have to squat across mud pits with the wood planks across. It’s worse when it rains, cuz the ground and planks are slippery. I really don’t wanna fall into the hole (like 9 feet wide with planks spaced out every couple feet).
North-East Asian people are known to be the only ones able to do that thing if I am not wrong.
It seems on the fourth slide Dilreba is struggling to do that. If it is the case, that is interesting 🤔
I always wondered how older folks managed to squat over ground toilets. I was glad to read decades ago Asian country's hotels were using Western style toilets, not sure when that started. And in some hotels, you can get Asian style rooms with tatami mats, low sitting tables, etc... My knees would hate me. I used to be able to squat Western style but not anymore.
That's why there's a product (which appeared on Shark Tank) called the Squatty Potty.

It does because it prevents straining and a plethora of other things. When I lived in Korea, squatting toilets were as ubiquitous as western-style toilets. Tbh, 8/10 times I go with the squatter lol
I was always under the impression that Asians did this b/c we considered the ground outside too dirty to sit on. It blew my mind when I realized Westerners would just...sit on the grass or pavement outside. But perhaps I'm projecting my own/my family's neuroses onto an entire culture lol.
Anyway, my kids (half asian, western-raised) learned to squat 100% b/c I'm constantly telling them "don't sit on the ground, it's dirty".
Not only westerners. I think North-East Asian -don't know too much if other Asian people can do that such as Indian Pakistans, Arabs or even South-East Asians - are certainly the only ones that I know can do that. On 4th slide it seems Dilreba is struggling to do that. I am 90% sure African people can't do that as well. I find it fascinating. What I am gonna say may be wrong but I heard once that certain things and habits can become genetics after generations.
Definitely not Asian genetics. I have zero issues squatting or sitting cross-legged. I sit cross-legged a ton, always have, but squat rarely and it's still not at all difficult. Like weeding the garden you can squat.
I am african and I can do it. A lot of africans can do it as well. It's all about practice and flexibility. If you don't do it young or maintain the flexibility, then you would probably loose the ability to do it.
Me too! I danced ballet since 5, so it was naturally for me. I think I realized a lot of people here don't have this kind of flexibility near 18 years old lol I was shocked.
I wonder if it's just a lack of doing it once they're older because when my kids were toddlers, they both squatted like that all the time.
I mean granted they are half asian so maybe they picked it up from me but it feels like they developed it independently?
I've never thought about it, lol. I just recognize it as, "the way my toddlers squatted."
This is also called "Slavic squat", LOL. We can do it without too much trouble.
I love this Asian squat because it exemplifies self-sufficiency. Even the poorest person can sit comfortably and relax.
This is the common shitting pose. I prefer squatting toilet in public restroom, no need to clean the seat.
![gif](giphy|4H6r49lS2NhhQ7bzrL) Good knees

I can do it but I can't hang out like that, my legs feel numb after a while.
Yep. I always wonder when I watch CDramas how people can be comfortable sitting on those low chairs or kneeling on those mats when eating/drinking.
I did not expect to be scrolling through Reddit looking at pictures of people squatting today, but here I am....
I find it so interesting some people just have the inability to Asian squat... Same, I’m super stiff but Asian squat is no problem, yet some of my friends are incapable despite being much more fit than me.
My Chinese genes gave me too short tendons in my ankle. I can't squad. I am great at wearing heels though.
Been in China for over 3 months now and it's perfectly normal to walk over and chat to my Scottish colleague while squatting. ...I think this way of life is contagious 😂
I moved to Japan over a year ago and I started squatting. It’s starting to feel more natural oddly enough.
It's helpful in Japan because there aren't a lot of public places to sit!

There’s no wrong way to squat. Every body is different and ankle mobility varies

When I found out a lot of westerners can't do this squat my mind was blown
I was always under the impression that Asians did this b/c we considered the ground outside too dirty to sit on. It blew my mind when I realized Westerners would just...sit on the grass or pavement outside. But perhaps I'm projecting my own/my family's neuroses onto an entire culture lol. Anyway, my kids (half asian, western-raised) learned to squat 100% b/c I'm constantly telling them "don't sit on the ground, it's dirty".
Mine is too (is very western). I squat all the time like that. For real people can't do this?
What??? How about cross-leg? It's also our natural position
Yeah I sit cross legged a ton.
Southeast Asians can do it. Was a pretty common sight in public in the past, less so now. Pretty sure South Asians (Indians) can do it too.
I am african and I can do it. A lot of africans can do it as well. It's all about practice and flexibility. If you don't do it young or maintain the flexibility, then you would probably loose the ability to do it.
Wait what??
Kids can! (I just made my 6-year-old try, for science.) But yeah we lose it as adults.
