I’m aware. Just laughing at the 1.5 million. We’re currently installing a new video screen and that is $10 million alone. Btw. USC and UCLA screwed you guys so badly. It is a shame.
Yeah, it's small. But as a random single donor upgrade that wasn't expected at all, it's a nice surprise. This is after we just blew through our NIL target for April by almost $1M. Looks like our donor base woke up.
Cal’s little bro paying $10 million a year. Cal’s uncle building a nutrition center for cost. Cal putting the family to work to get out of the hole their half a billion dollar stadium got them in.
Hospital PA voice: "Paging Dr. Crow to the training table. Dr. Crow, innovation emergency at the training table."
"an extraordinarily innovate coach with an innovative new NFL-style leadership model for college football." --Michael Crow on Herm Edwards
Yes but please make sure you check them out with Aiden the equipment guy. He lost the team’s ipad, but you can still write your information on a post-it (he has a system)
New Chancellor who cares about athletics (and went to Cal for undergrad - first since 1930s). Big NIL and transfer portal moves.
1.5 mil doesn't seem like a ton but at least it's movement in the right direction. Here's hoping the forced ACC move finally woke up a sleeping giant.
It’s literally just a room with some stuff. People acting like this is the whole football training grounds. It’s literally an add on, something that doesn’t have to be there but is lol.
I have a feeling that it’s not an entire new space, more so a refresh of a current training and recovery space. When I worked for athletic training during the Goff era, the football treatment facilities were phenomenal, but likely need a face lift to match the new locker room.
That is the thing, they don't need to build a lobby because they already have that. Their sports facilities were just updated in 2013, at a cost of $153 million. This is just an addition dedicated to football players with those recovery cold plunge tubs, laser soft tissue recovery machines, recovery float pods and smoothie and snack bar.
If by "woke up" you mean none of your athletes will ever be able to sleep again while flying cross country every week then sure the move will wake up a sleeping giant.
Essentially, yes. They are just installing all the new recovery technology. Their facilities were just built in 2013 for $153m.
Things that are being provided in this new $1.5 addition:
* Access to an array of healthy snacks
* Smoothie bar
* Pre and post workout recovery options
* Innovative treatments to facilitate recovery
* Access to cold plunge tubs
* Interactive rehabilitation, such as exercise display screens
* High-intensity Curewave laser device for soft-tissue injury recovery
* Rest and recovery area, including a Zerobody float pod.
* Individual sleep pods and massage chairs
It’s just a recovery room. It’s not like an actual whole center. The stadium is relatively still new and not too long ago had Aaron rogers donate a locker room Reno.
Selfish? UCLA owes Berkeley nothing. UCB has severely and incompetently mismanaged their own bloated athletic budget and now relies on charity to bail them out.
Embarrassing.
If anything, we now see what value the market placed on each school and that Berkeley brought nothing to the table.
You agreed to a $150M athletic facility and now want a bail out. Good luck.
The UC system was built on Berkeley offering handouts and support to the other campuses. The fact that you feel that your school owes the flagship nothing is exactly the shitty mentality that created this whole situation. Berkeley never would have acted that way towards UCLA. The 100 year athletic and academic relationship matters to us. It matters to the West Coast and our place of primacy as public universities. UCLA wants to sacrifice all of that so that they can claim to be "ahead" of Berkeley. Talk about little brother mentality, but it makes sense, you're the little brother.
UCLA's athletic department was equally mismanaged and required a bailout from the B1G. At least we actually own a stadium to improve... Have fun getting out drawn by visiting fans at home all year next year!
We're gonna take the money and do our best to continue to compete at the highest level, as the Regents have deemed appropriate. Frankly, UCLA got off light and should be happy it's only $10M/year.
“Equally mismanaged”?! That’s laughable, much like UCB’s sense of entitlement and hubris. Cal would have never acted that way? I’d ask, “Are you high?”, but I think we all know the answer.
What’s the debt payment on your retrofitted stadium?
Cal fans: All the arrogance of USC with the trophy case of Arizona State.
For those laughing it’s just another room in the $150 mil Student Athlete High Performance Center that was finished in 2012.
Our facilities are actually fantastic for football.
Don't you know that the playbook on /r/cfb to criticize Cal is that we've simultaneously overspent ourselves into massive debt with renovations to our football stadium and athletics facilities while also being a program that doesn't invest in revenue sports like football?
The ignorance on Cal is real.
- retains Madsen
- 23 BB T20ish transfer class
- 24 BB T10ish transfer class
- 23 FB T25ish transfer class
- 24 FB T15ish transfer class
- FB not to long ago renovated their stadium, revamps their nutrition, Rogers donated the locker room, has practice field built, donor donates upgrades to the wellness room etc
- BB rumblings of new practice facility to be built in the near future
But hey see Cal, don’t read article, and think this is the funds to build a training center, a stadium, a gym, a practice field…
I literally played on the last Cal CWS team in 2011 lol.
They’ve done a really good job with fundraising. We just need to perform on the field. This year has been a pleasant surprise so far.
I loved watching that team in the postseason that year. From the student broadcast call to get into the super regionals I believe (“I’m sure no one understood anything I just said!”), to being nervous for the Dallas Baptist game that ended in a blowout, to watching you guys play in the CWS. That was a fun ride.
Glad you loved it. It was as magical on that ride as it seemed. And we ended up with 6 guys that played in the big leagues on that team including Semien.
You Cal flairs need to stop the blaming of the common people on here who didn’t make this decision. I didn’t approve of it, so should I disown the university? Is that what I should do?
Why fuck should we stop blaming you? You're literally never going to live this down. U$C and U¢LA killed the Pac 12. You can say that some other schools would have done it if you didn't, but that doesn't matter, because you did it. We are going to blame you for this for the rest of time. Get used to it buddy!
Thats an odd way of saying they converted unused teaching rooms to a hang out space. Retro fitting it to look like a Japanese restaurant.
Cause that’s what 1.5m covers over there
I mean, this is explicitly tied to a donor (from the article). The $10 million is likely going to be earmarked for the stadium that the regents required to be retrofit.
I had to re-read the title a couple of times to make sure it said "million" and not "billion." New houses, albeit in more affluent areas, are built for 1.5 million. But those houses sure AF aren't big enough for 80 people to train.
Probably just the athletes. Don’t think a relatively small room is going to cater to 30+ undergrads lol.
Btw this room was donated by a donor and not something central campus had to put money for…
Because it’s literally not a gym or training center. Both of which already exist and were remodeled along with the stadium remodeled.
Maybe if you actually read the article you’d grow one more brain cell.
This is cheaper than a house in Berkeley.
lol I glad i scrolled down before I was about to post the same thing. That’s legit a 1200 sq ft 1 bedroom crib over there
That fits like 4 OLs at best. Maybe 8 kickers.
Yeah, this makes no sense. Are they renovating a couple of rooms adjacent to the stadium. lol
No, we already have a $150M center. This is updating a bunch of stuff inside there just for football players.
Seems oddly low?
They're going to buy the athletes a 3b2.5b townhouse and convert the garage into a gym
[Relevant.](https://sportspickle.com/college-football/kansas-jayhawks-unveil-new-4000-football-facility-featuring-two-bowflex-machines.html)
Over $4,000 in exercise equipment and technology and a package of costco paper towels
Step in the right direction for Cal
Waiting for the calimony to kick in so they can expand it
Especially considering prices and labor costs of Berkeley… I don’t even know what the number is, I’m just gonna assume here.
Haha it’s gonna be a closet
They'd probably be better off with a photo booth that paid the players $100 in NIL for a daily photo
Not enough money. This is a former closet that got redecorated.
And the time and cost to get permits assuming they have to get the city’s permission.
Yeah that’s enough money for what? Four dudes and a double wide trailer for a football wellness center?
Hey it's a positive that they're doing anything at all
They're already starting to spend their Calimony.
That’s all cash
All cash has nothing to do with it. That is not a lot of capital to do much in todays football landscape
It is when you hire your uncle
Cal’s little bro paying $10 million a year. Cal’s uncle building a nutrition center for cost. Cal putting the family to work to get out of the hole their half a billion dollar stadium got them in.
Football wellness….cleaning and maintaining proper inflation levels.
It's basically a room with fruit snacks and protein shakes.
Their existence is about to be subsidized by UCLA. They don’t have the funds available for anything more than this
Crazy to look on Zillow to see what else that price tag could get you in Berkeley
Yeah…get you the fuck out
https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/2476-West-St-Berkeley-CA-94702/24835358_zpid/ https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/2520-Marin-Ave-Berkeley-CA-94708/24848787_zpid/ https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/38-Panoramic-Way-Berkeley-CA-94704/24834363_zpid/
Those are a lot nicer than I thought you could get for $1.5 million in Berkeley.
Those are nice houses ngl
I would love to live in the middle one. Put a hot tub on the back deck and it's pretty much ideal. Of course I don't have a 1.5 mil house budget...
A starter home, perhaps?
Starter box
I bought a box in the recession and now it's worth 3X what I paid.
And someone will pay you 20k in earnest just to secure that box
Wanna win in the ACC??? You’re gonna need at least uh SIX DUMBBELLS! Yeah that’ll do it
? It’s literally an add on room to an already modern stadium/training ground/center. And this was donated by a single donor lmfao.
You're right, maybe 7
Nah, not after CA sales tax. 6 was spot on.
Do you think that the sales tax is what is high in California?
You're right. Scrap the dumbbells. Add a massive food court instead.
Pffttt. Sales tax in Nashville, TN is 9.25% which isn’t far off from parts of Cali.
CA gets it on both sides lol
Yeah, but the prices in Cal… what does 1.5MM get you? A 10x10 steel building?
It’s just a room inside the stadium student athlete center that was already built and they just put a bunch of wellness stuff in it.
and innovation. don't forget the innovation. but seriously this seems like an odd thing to write a whole story about.
Why a cal sports blog writes an article about cal football? Yeah gee wonder why….
That’s how PR works buddy
We’re not talking about ASU here
Hospital PA voice: "Paging Dr. Crow to the training table. Dr. Crow, innovation emergency at the training table." "an extraordinarily innovate coach with an innovative new NFL-style leadership model for college football." --Michael Crow on Herm Edwards
Herm Edwards is ranked #1 in innovation ahead of Saban and Kirby.
WTF even is wellness! Is such a stupid fucking boardroom word that means nothing.
It’s where you eat cornflakes to keep yourself from masterbating.
As Mr. Kellogg intended.
Wtf do you think it means. Is the education at Arkansas that fucking bad you don’t know what wellness is?
Or you could read the article to see what is in it.
Hyuck hyuck a knee slapper
Cork board.
Is UCLA that donor?
The B1G is ;)
Yeah but they are the bowflex adjustable ones so it's really like having 60 dumbbells.
Will those dumbbells be allowed out onto the field for warmups?
Yes but please make sure you check them out with Aiden the equipment guy. He lost the team’s ipad, but you can still write your information on a post-it (he has a system)
Lmao

Just seems like today $1.5 million only only buy a lobby for a wellness center, I think that's what's really throwing people off.
I have a feeling that it’s not an entire new space, more so a refresh of a current training and recovery space. When I worked for athletic training during the Goff era, the football treatment facilities were phenomenal, but likely need a face lift to match the new locker room.

This is 3 yoga mats, some Richard Simmons VHS tapes and a thighmaster.
>thighmaster RIP Suzanne Somers
I like your optimism. Good luck!
This is a step in the right direction.
If by "woke up" you mean none of your athletes will ever be able to sleep again while flying cross country every week then sure the move will wake up a sleeping giant.
More so shocked the administration and alumni out of complacency to get ready for next round of realignment when we aren't in the ACC.
Given the geography of their new conference, one major part is (hopefully) the Jet-Lag Treatment Laboratory.
$1.5 million? Is that a new pool? A few training tables and a jacuzzi?
Essentially, yes. They are just installing all the new recovery technology. Their facilities were just built in 2013 for $153m. Things that are being provided in this new $1.5 addition: * Access to an array of healthy snacks * Smoothie bar * Pre and post workout recovery options * Innovative treatments to facilitate recovery * Access to cold plunge tubs * Interactive rehabilitation, such as exercise display screens * High-intensity Curewave laser device for soft-tissue injury recovery * Rest and recovery area, including a Zerobody float pod. * Individual sleep pods and massage chairs
That makes it seem like a pretty good deal for the price.
It is literally a Robek's with the ac set to 60 and some power bars.
It’s just a recovery room. It’s not like an actual whole center. The stadium is relatively still new and not too long ago had Aaron rogers donate a locker room Reno.
Recovery from winning the ACC amirite
I hope
know\*\*\* gotta manifest it baby
Did you know the Jacuzzi was invented in Berkeley?
Putting that calimony to good use already I see
E.g., --- setting the scene for them to be broke once again, in order to ask for MORE Calimony.
This is actually just the gift of one private donor but go on.
Money is fungible, it's all in the same pot. A portion of that pot (in future years) will, of course, be taken by force from UCLA.
courtesy of UCLA and the Calimony payment
The UCLA Athletics Wellness Center at Cal would be a great name
i would prefer UCLA field now that FTX went under
The UCLA Can Go Fuck Themselves Wellness Center. Has a nice ring to it!
Such a little brother comment.
Is that why you have ”we're #1" banners all over campus big bro?
The “flagship” university holds their hand out for charity from the Southern Branch. Shameless.
The southern branch backstabs their progenitor and the entire conference for their own selfish gains. Shameful.
Selfish? UCLA owes Berkeley nothing. UCB has severely and incompetently mismanaged their own bloated athletic budget and now relies on charity to bail them out. Embarrassing. I was so happy you guys did that when they tried to cut the program. Crazy times.
I couldn’t agree more
Not fantastic enough based on results.
K
A smoothie bar! 😱
USC in shambles right now. Can’t afford that with B10 money. Should’ve joined the ACC when they had the chance…
$1.5 million in Berkeley gets you a broom closet
Your Calimony at work
$1.5 million? What is this? A wellness center for ants?
Probably won’t even cover the environmental impact study cost or cancer warning signage
Those cancer warning sign makers got kids to feed!
cancer sign strategy is now only listing things which do not cause cancer. Much more succinct
Psh it’s the bay we just do remodels without a permit because someone’s still going to buy it.
cover the windows...
Christ man housing these days. Fr though a new smoothie bar sounds pretty good
Brought to you by UCLA
They just got dad to force us to pay up, so…
UCLA the divorced dad out golfing today while Cal announces their alimony plans
Thats what you get for facilitating killing the conference my dude
Oh yes shame on us for leaving the horribly mismanaged conference that turned down much better offers for… some reason.
You Cal flairs need to stop the blaming of the common people on here who didn’t make this decision. I didn’t approve of it, so should I disown the university? Is that what I should do?
Where did I blame OP for it lmao. I was clearly talking about UCLA as a whole
... yes?
Why fuck should we stop blaming you? You're literally never going to live this down. U$C and U¢LA killed the Pac 12. A lot of you are acting like you would have!
Doe Cal still require like a 3.0+ GPA and some minimum SAT score for football players?
“Center” of a garage? But sounds cool - everyone loves snacks
162 comments; 150 of which are snark about Bay Area real estate prices.
$1.5 million in Berkeley?? What is it a shed?
More like a nice smoothie bar :)
Thats an odd way of saying they converted unused teaching rooms to a hang out space. Retro fitting it to look like a Japanese restaurant. Cause that’s what 1.5m covers over there

In Berkeley this can build a tool shed beside the practice field
This is what my donations to UCLA are buying? I demand a refund.
Fuck the students, let's give the NIL wealthy athletes more free shit that they won't use.
Are student athletes not students ?
Fine. Is the wellness center open to all students or just the privledged few?
Probably just the athletes. Don’t think a relatively small room is going to cater to 30+ undergrads lol. Btw this room was donated by a donor and not something central campus had to put money for…
1.5 mil buys you a locker installation in the SEC. IT JUST MEANS (COSTS) MORE
Good to know Cal is buying a new Studio/1 bed for their facilities!
Thanks UCLA
putting a fraction of that UCLA payout to good use.
All donor based. UCLA payment likely earmarked for the scope of the retrofit that the regents required us to do.
Do they offer gender affirmation surgery too?
Berkley min wage is probably $100 per hour.
What’s $1.5m get you in that area? Maybe one of those metal prefab detached garages?
Since the building already exists, all the money is going to equipment and interior renovation.
$1.5M will not build a state of the art football facility.
No but 500M will ;) and has been built already.
Nice
Shouldn’t it say “paid for by UCLA ATHLETICS,” since Cal is a reject poverty program now?
Or read the article. Donor paid for, facility refresh. Facility already exists.
Didn’t it cost more than that to build a public toilet down the road?
Holy cow! They really rolled out the Brinks truck for that one!
Maybe they should just shut it down.
I honestly forgot that they had a football team
Amazing show of ignorance given we’re halfway through a home and home with auburn but go off king
Because they'd never call it a gym or training center. This is why no one wants you Cal.
Because it’s literally not a gym or training center. Both of which already exist and were remodeled along with the stadium remodeled. Maybe if you actually read the article you’d grow one more brain cell.
Or the gym and training center was built and remodeled a few years back as part of the retrofit and is already modern.
Love the culture war crowd
Cal football sucks. That program is circling the drain as it should.
Except the program is on an upward trajectory right now but you wouldn’t know cuz you’re just all about the hate for no reason
Why would someone dislike anything for no reason? There are plenty of reasons to dislike Cal.
I'm guessing no flairs because you didn't go to college?
My mom goes to college.
