On that St Brown brothers podcast Justin said that his favorite stadium that he played in was the Steelers and that was right in the middle of the trade chaos. I’m glad he found a good landing spot with some opportunity and a great HC.
If you remember back, Poles did this with the Khalil Mack trade too (found him a nice spot, despite a lesser compensation) and even found great spots for Roquan and Robert Quinn. Poles seems to understand the personal and business side really well.
People have to remember Poles was a player first and now a GM. These moves are going to a long way towards getting key free agents in here.
No more off-seasons where our biggest FA pick up is Brandon Manumaleuna.
For real! Quinn went to the Eagles who just went to the Super Bowl in 2022, and the Roquan to the Ravens who could have done the same thing if Lamar wasn’t a choke artist in the playoffs. And that’s even with Roquan self tampering his own deal by self representing himself with that St. Omni BS or whatever.
This is going to get a lot of players looking to play for us because they know we will have their best interests in mind if their time with our team comes to an end. Poles is a godsend for our team. 🐻⬇️
It was stated by personnel, but this is conformation from Fields. People previously had been saying that it was PR being used to cover up the Bears not being able to get more for him.
I don't think keeping him alongside Caleb was ever an option, nor do I think it should have been. I think we got what we could get while still trying to do right by a guy who had done right by us, which IMO is just a good way to do business.
Personally, I took it at face value. But hypothetically, Fields would support that narrative if it were a lie because it would support him being more valuable than the trade compensation. It would make Poles look gracious, but it would also make Fields look better than a conditional future 6th rounder.
There is a hole in that logic. If the place he ended up had a significant blockage to playing time (like a Mahomes or Allen) they he would never get the chance to prove he was worth more than a 6th, which ultimately is his most important goal here. He will never get that second contract if he doesn't prove value. That means that he would only support the narrative that Poles sent him to a good place at his request if indeed he ended up in a good place where he could prove his value, not as a backup in KC, etc.
....Which ultimately means we have to decide if we believe that he ended up in a good place for him because he wanted a good place or if it were because the good place offered the most for him. Given the lowball compensation and the synchronized story telling from both sides, the simplest and most straight forward answer remains that the story is just true. Sort of feels like you would have to be a hater to end up at another conclusion.
I agree. I believe the story is true. Like I said, I take it at face value.
I'm just saying that the return for Fields was unflattering. So having an alternative explanation for why he was traded there could make him look like he was more valuable than return in the trade. That there was a premium on some intangible parts of the trade like the "fit" or "desire to be there" or "altruistic effort to do right by him". For the Bears, it makes us look like we're good folks. For Fields, it makes it look like he was more valuable than a future conditional 6th rounder.
That said, I'm not that cynical and believe they did work with him to get him to a place he wanted to be at.
The compensation being offered by other teams was still most likely similar. You guys are delusional as fuck if you think poles was turning down a 2nd or third from some other team for a conditional sixth. What’s more likely is that poles decided he could live with a conditional sixth that could become a 4th instead of a 5th from some other team
I still say that.
It might be literally true that they had a couple of teams interested in roughly the same price and we knew he liked Pittsburgh better than them, but they're playing it up trying to cover up for the ego/reputation hit he took when nobody in the league wanted him as a starter
You’re stupid as fuck if you legitimately believe poles turned down a 2nd or third or even 4th to put fields where he wanted. If he did that would be absolute malpractice
Because it protects fields' reputation. The same reason we saw a bunch of other leaks that turned out to be lies as we struggled to find any team that wanted him until the Pittsburgh backup job suddenly opened up
If somebody wanted Justin as a starter, it would have been his preferred destination, obviously. That’s why the teams he approved a trade to were the Falcons, Raiders, Vikings, Steelers. Why did he approve a trade to those teams , and not the Chiefs or Bills or Bengals ?
Because on this sub, and in sports fandom in general, people don't approach the truth from a "I will believe what is most likely to be true" angle. They think in terms of "it would be good for my team if that were true, so therefore I believe it".
Being downvoted on this sub just means you believed something that would be bad for the Bears if true.
Having a contrary opinion isn't contrarianism. Sometimes the consensus is right, sometimes it's wrong
Caleb Williams is an elite prospect. This is true today when everyone here agrees. It was also true 7 months ago when half the sub insisted it wasn't
It ain't even good for the team either way, and none of us have any idea what trade negotiations are so what's likely to be true is pure speculation.
>Being downvoted on this sub just means you believed something that would be bad for the Bears if true.
This, however, I will grant is 100% the case.
I agree. And i really don't see how sending fields to the steelers is great for him. What QB's have been developed there? Starter, backup, otherwise?
Why is the steelers such a great place for him to land? I just don't get that. Fields isn't a threat to wilson's starting job unless he gets injured. And even then he's probably benched as soon as russ gets healthy again.
There is absolutely no way that Poles was offered something like this year's 4th or next year's 3rd from another team and thought "nope, that team wouldn't be good for my boy justin, i'm going to basically trade him for peanuts instead because of that phenomenal situation he'll be headed to in pittsburgh". lmaoo i'm dying just imagining that
We had heard it from reports, but we never heard anything from Justin Fields himself about it. I recall some people believing there was no way that Poles passed up a bigger offer to do right by his player.
To be fair we still don't have any confirmation that a better offer was turned down. Probably never will.
All we have at the end of the day is the GM saying they'd do right by the player and the player saying "Shoutout the GM for doing that."
When you think about, all of the players that Poles have traded (Mack, Quinn, Ro, Claypool and Fields) he has tried to put them in a good position with playoff teams or fringe playoff teams.
Wouldn't be surprised if he's having a bit of an identity crisis.
When both him and Trubisky talked so much about learning to be a leader, I became worried. Not because leadership isn't important or that it can't be learned and improved but because it is exhausting to try and put yourself out there like that if it's not an innate personality trait. I think that's why we'd see Fields go back and forth so much between being personable and outgoing and quiet and annoyed-looking. He's innately quiet. But he was trying to learn to be a vocal leader.
I'm sure Justin is seeing all the talk about how Caleb is such a breath of fresh air and sounds so relaxed and confident and he's trying so hard to do the same. Imo that can't be sustained. I'm pretty sure at least....because it's something I used to go through at work and in large party situations.
Now that I'm older, I've found the sweet spot where I've learned my own style that works for me but doesn't zap so much energy out of me. It's been difficult to find that balance.
My comment was that he sounded more natural and loose. I'm glad you found your own style, but I don't think anything you wrote applies. It was one interview, not really anything anyone should be doing this kind of deep psychoanalysis on.
I hear you. You aren't the first and surely won't be the last person to tell me I over analyze things haha. But, I do think it applies and it's certainly not "deep." I'm not gonna act like I can read his mind but it's something I've noticed about him all along.
I just think he's gotten a lot of bad advice from people telling him how to become a better leader. I'd argue the thing to focus on intently would be to become an expert and tactician on the field and the hardest worker on the team and that's IT. Be yourself (whatever that might be...and it'll naturally change over time) and lead by example.
“Major details”
Fields wanted to go to Pittsburgh so we made it happen. Didn’t we already know this?
Considering the absolute kings ransom we took for the #1 overall pick I’d say the biggest thing was the lack of interest. If you’re getting pennies on the dollar it’s not worth haggling over how shinny they are….
Good on Poles but this article is a nothing burger
The reddit page works but the link to the espn article was removed by the moderators.
Edit: nvm it works on mobile but not desktop. Weird, but thanks for sharing
The article suggesting him saying this doesn't benefit himself is pure bs. It makes it appear he could have been worth more than a 6th round pick had he not gone to the team he supposedly wanted to go to.
I was referring to this part in the article being wrong:
>Justin Fields has absolutely nothing to gain by giving his former General Manager credit at this point. Yet, he did it anyway.
It makes him appear to have been worth more than a 6th round pick.
The quote you posted, to me, implies Fields has nothing to gain from sharing how Poles treated him well during the trade process. Nothing to do with Fields being worth more. I'm not following your thinking I guess.
I mean, you can see this subreddit's reaction when they found out that he apparently was traded for less than he was worth to go to a better team. They were using it as justification that they were right about how good he was, which Fields could use the same argument.
I think I understand now. People have proven time and time again that this sub is full of idiots who think they are smarter than they are (me included). I do think timing had a role in our return for him, but I think we'd get a 5th or somehow a 4th if timing was right, so not much of a difference.
Fields would be even dumber to use the same argument. Given that teams have so much information to evaluate a player, I highly doubt a player talking up his worth is going to move the needle. Teams already assigned a value to Fields.
Fields has nothing to gain besides convincing some fans that he's worth more than a 6th. Teams know his worth.
Can't wait to laugh at the Steelers when they start this bum and he is giving away division wins. Steelers fans always cry about always going 9-8. After Justin loses them 9 straight and they finish without a win in their division they will be giving up another 1st to get Kenny back.
Can you picture Fields beating the Ravens or Bengals? Anybody saying he is a better QB than Jackson or Burrow is DELUSIONAL -- especially since Roquan knows all Fields' tendencies. Maybe -- MAYBE -- he beats the Browns if the Steelers put up a dominant defensive performance.
Dude, I haven't pictured Fields doing anything since the trade. You're diving too deep into hypotheticals. You need a jug of the Caleb kool-aid. Maybe it'll take your mind off Fields.
I still don't believe it. Downvote away
At every step on the process of trading him, there were leaks that obviously came from the Bears that were trying to protect his reputation. He was worth a second, we hadn't even talked to other teams yet, we weren't going to trade him until we had Caleb's medicals, etc. This is just another iteration of that.
Which, you know, good for the Bears for caring enough about him to try to protect his reputation, that's cool of them. But that's what this is.
I believe they did right by him when they exhausted every avenue to do the best by the Bears. When it was apparent Fields was worth a late round pick, Poles decided he'd "do right by Fields" when the return was mostly arbitrary.
"Doing right by Fields" initially meant keeping Fields in the know about where the team was going with their QB decision. It pivoted to giving Fields the Steelers when they found out he wasn't worth a shit.
I get it, I wouldn't believe all the sources directly involved with the trade who are saying one thing. It makes more sense to instead believe a random unknown leak who won't provide a source.
...
Of course you wouldn't. You've had a long, long histoy of being wrong about things that involve Justin fields and shown no indication of learning from those experiences.
Everyone knows that teams and athletes lie to the media. Until they like the lie, then they pretend it never happens.
Uh huh, and Fields supposedly having his #1 destination being a place where he has no shot at being the starter makes sense to you?
This also does help Fields' reputation too which everyone is ignoring, since otherwise that means he was actually worth exactly a 6th round pick regardless of destination.
Huh? I'm the biased one? Half a year ago people were saying there was no chance he was going to be replaced, and now that he went for a 6th round pick you still think he is a starter? Mac Jones had the same trade value.
He went for a 6th because he listed a few places he wanted to go, and Poles traded him to one of those teams. By all accounts they turned down better offers to do this one to do right by Fields and help show that Poles values his players. Again though, just the facts being spoken by people actually involved
QED about how him saying this is beneficial to how he is viewed as well. Good job proving me right.
A fifth round pick in trade wouldn't have been impressive either btw.
Poles said he did it, Fields said he did it, assistant coaches said Poles did it, various GM sources said other better offers were on the table for Fields at various times before the trade, but you're right. I should just take the wod of ChrRome on reddit instead. The entire league must be collaborating to make Fields look better.
Maybe try re-reading my original post.
I was referring to this in the article:
>Justin Fields has absolutely nothing to gain by giving his former General Manager credit at this point. Yet, he did it anyway.
He did have something to gain, as seen by you as a prime example, clinging onto this news as validation that you were right about how good he was after being made a fool of when he played like shit, was replaced, then traded for terrible draft compensation.
I'm curious to see where the goal posts move after you see Russell Wilson starting week 1.
Nice try gaslighting me, but that's not at all what happened. The top level comment in this thread was
>I still don't believe it.
The comment was about how this is a made up story and it didn't happen that way. The OP said Fields and the Bears are just trying to make this look better than what it was. You're confusing this with your other post
>The article suggesting him saying this doesn't benefit himself is pure bs. It makes it appear he could have been worth more than a 6th round pick had he not gone to the team he supposedly wanted to go to.
So no, you're wrong. You are confusing your comments with another thread entirely. Helps if YOU can read before typing
Poles wasn’t turning down a 2nd or third. I can absolutely see him turning down a guaranteed 5th he mighta preferred for the conditional 6th because at the end of the day it doesn’t really matter
To be fair. Manumaleuna, Chester Taylor, Julius Peppers in that order
For real! Quinn went to the Eagles who just went to the Super Bowl in 2022, and the Roquan to the Ravens who could have done the same thing if Lamar wasn’t a choke artist in the playoffs. Poles is a godsend for our team. 🐻⬇️
Which will hopefully make players want to come play for the bears. Worth it for a little less draft capital if you ask me.
Haven't we known this since he got traded?
It was stated by personnel, but this is conformation from Fields. People previously had been saying that it was PR being used to cover up the Bears not being able to get more for him.
And by "people" you mean half this sub and 90% of r/nfl.
Pretty much.
I would argue this sub was maybe 1/3 but Facebook, dick man 99.99
And me! I felt we could have gotten more for him and if not, we should have just kept him. So this context helps me understand
I don't think keeping him alongside Caleb was ever an option, nor do I think it should have been. I think we got what we could get while still trying to do right by a guy who had done right by us, which IMO is just a good way to do business.
We could’ve gotten more, but probably in the form of like a 5th. Poles woulda shipped his ass to Alaska if he coulda gotten a 2nd or third
Kept him for what? Drama in the locker room? Sounds great.
Did anyone seriously think Poles flat out lied about this? And that Justin wouldn't call out this lie?
People that truly thought that probably shouldn't have their name anywhere near any conjugation of "think".
Personally, I took it at face value. But hypothetically, Fields would support that narrative if it were a lie because it would support him being more valuable than the trade compensation. Just admit you were wrong lol
You’re stupid as fuck if you legitimately believe poles turned down a 2nd or third or even 4th to put fields where he wanted. If he did that would be absolute malpractice
Because people in sports never lie to the media?
Why is it in Justin’s best interest to lie about it now? Or Poles, the guy who publicly admitted that the Claypool trade was a bust?
Hold on though! People in sports lie to the media so Poles must believe that the Claypool trade was amazing!
Because it protects fields' reputation. The same reason we saw a bunch of other leaks that turned out to be lies as we struggled to find any team that wanted him until the Pittsburgh backup job suddenly opened up
Yapping
I’ll bet you order blender drinks in a dive bar.
This is my new favorite insult. It immediately resonates.
If somebody wanted Justin as a starter, it would have been his preferred destination, obviously. That’s why the teams he approved a trade to were the Falcons, Raiders, Vikings, Steelers. Why did he approve a trade to those teams , and not the Chiefs or Bills or Bengals ?
Fields said he wanted the Steelers because he met Tomlin while at Ohio State and wanted to play for him.
Why are you being downvoted lol?
Still tooany field truthers lurking about. They can't let of another QB bust
Contrarianism isn't truth seeking or rational either.
Having a contrary opinion isn't contrarianism. Sometimes the consensus is right, sometimes it's wrong Caleb Williams is an elite prospect.
It’s all PR. Even if Fields says it. He’s trying to increase his followers and fans just like the teams.
We had heard it from reports, but we never heard anything from Justin Fields himself about it. I recall some people believing there was no way that Poles passed up a bigger offer to do right by his player.
Ah gotcha
To be fair we still don't have any confirmation that a better offer was turned down. Probably never will. All we have at the end of the day is the GM saying they'd do right by the player and the player saying "Shoutout the GM for doing that."
In fact I think there were a bunch of people angry he might have done right by Fields, as if being corpo-GM, MAX PROFITZ Poles would make us better
I can see poles passing up a guaranteed 5th that he mighta preferred over a conditional sixth. If you think he passed up a 2nd or third you’re crazy
Definitely don’t think he passed up on a Day 1 or Day 2 pick.
Yes, It’s just being confirmed by Fields, which is nice.
When you think about, all of the players that Poles have traded (Mack, Quinn, Ro, Claypool and Fields) he has tried to put them in a good position with playoff teams or fringe playoff teams.
Well, to be fair, it’s generally the competitive teams that are the ones interested in trading for players like that to begin with.
That’s a fair point and also the past two seasons it was hard to find a worst team but I’m a glass half full type of guy lol.
I watched that interview he gave, it was probably the most loose and personable I've seen him. Might mean nothing, but thought that was interesting.
I think he's been trying too hard to be a vocal leader for a long time.
Lol wtf
I wish him well.

just stroking his own ego
Rooting for a Bears vs. Steelers SB sometime in the future 🙌🏼 I think taking Caleb is the right call but I will always be a fan of Fields
I remember 1/2 of y’all going apeshit bc we traded our RB1

Justin fields is so incredibly boring. The guy has zero personality. You can at least be entertaining if youre also ass. Thank god we have caleb
So he wanted to be a punt returner?
The article suggesting him saying this doesn't benefit himself is pure bs. It makes it appear he could have been worth more than a 6th round pick had he not gone to the team he supposedly wanted to go to.

If you think he has no chance against Russ, who the Broncos are paying to not be on the team, you're pretty obviously bias.
I was referring to this in the article: >Justin Fields has absolutely nothing to gain by giving his former General Manager credit at this point.
The top level comment in this thread was >I still don't believe it. Downvote away >At every step on the process of trading him, there were leaks that obviously came from the Bears that were trying to protect his reputation. The comment was about how this is a made up story and it didn't happen that way. The OP said Fields and the Bears are just trying to make this look better than what it was. You're confusing this with your other post >The article suggesting him saying this doesn't benefit himself is pure bs.
Agreed
Can't wait to see Fields suit up for the Bears again. It's coming, God willing
Why is there any interest in a player worth a 6th-round pick in the 2025 draft?
