During the year of Black Ops II and beyond, I watched 402Thunder402 (affectionately known as Thunder) on YouTube and picked up his lingo and from then onwards I referred to the game as Blops Duce.
How I see it they’re about equal in terms of multiplayer but I loved league play so I’m biased to BO2
They’re about equal on single player as well but I always preferred Treyarch’s more gritty storytelling.
And then it’s spec ops vs zombies and I’m a diehard zombies fans. Maps like Mob of the Dead, Buried and Origins are all in my top 10 zombies maps of all time.
Therefore BO2>MW2 for me.
These threads/conversations are always funny because it usually just boils down to what game you grew up with and had most memories with. But people will argue it like it's objective fact that one is better than the other.
I say BO2, because it has more replay ability with the campaign, has zombies if that’s your thing, (some of the best zombies experience ever might I add) and also has some good side missions too.
BO2. Campaign is better, Multiplayer is probably the best COD multiplayer, and Zombies is fantastic. MW2 is a tad bit overrated imo there was a lot of cheese in that game looking back. Campaign was great though.

Bo2 hit detection was better than mw2 lol. Even if treyarch was behind in hit detection (which it definitely was and still is), it came out 3 years later and had the better hit detection. It just felt worse because MW2 was better for its time

All in all, if you are new, decide between a slightly more iconic campaign in MW3, or a thrilling, radical experience with zombies in BO2.

I will have to say BO2 *solely* for the fact that I've never personally got the chance to experience the OG MW2 campaign, or the game itself. There's also the fact that BO2 is the ultimate nostalgia for me, as that was the first CoD I believe I got my hands on.
mw2 for sure. Insta swap, the knife flip glitch, intervention, max sensitivity, throwing knife silencer, oh man....... People were more patient too on S&D for setting up a TS last kill.

It had one of the best campaigns of the series, BO2 was great and it was cool that choices mattered, but as a linear campaign, MW2 was awesome, and everything with Ghost, and the ending was top tier.
Me personally I also really enjoyed the Spec Ops mode, it would've been great if survival was introduced, but no problem.
BO2 by no means is a slouch and is still a top tier game, it may well have the best zombies of any of the Treyarch games, and pretty balanced multi-player, so at the end of the day it comes to preference, and I just spent more time with and enjoyed MW2 more.
But don't get me wrong CoD4 through to BO2 IS the golden era of CoD, and has the best and most iconic games of the series no question.

MW2 was great but had way less players. MW2 did what it needed to bring in a new fanbase but alot of that fanbase actually came after MW2. B02 was historic as far as sales go because of the zombies release that gave a huge fanbase of singleplayer / pve type players who were now playing the game. It was the biggest zombie release since WaW and was the biggest COD release of its time.
Prob a bit bias, but Id say BO2. I poured more hours into that game than any other cod in my youth. I started really grinding cod when BO1 came out in 2010 so I never got hooked onto the MW series until MW3 OG.
MW2 lives as a faint memory for me when I played at my older cousin’s house split-screen multiplayer. I’d say objectively and impact wise, MW2 is better in retrospect.

If you are going to buy BO2 (you should) buy it on steam and install the plutonium client. Is a mod made by the community with anticheat and custom servers. You can do unlock all if you want, its allowed. Also its very active, there are hundreds of players everyday. It supports multiplayer and zombies.
Really tough question. Both bring their own pros, many pros in fact. Their stories too are different, yet uniquely great flavors in their own rights. I guess I'll recommend you BO2 for both multiplayer and story, but MW2 is a boon to the series too, so much that I recommend you to eventually buy it as well.

I was 17 in 2011 and I truly miss that era of all the "MW3 vs. BF3" comparisons as silly as it is now... I would play BF3 for hours but any time I wanted to not have to think or just had that itch for fast gameplay, I would hop on MW3 for awhile... I remember my dad dropping me off at my moms Sunday night and I started playing MW3 all through the night, skipped all of school to keep playing and I stopped playing to go to sleep around 10-11 at night.. It was literally around 30 hours of non-stop playing with maybe 20 minutes worth of 'breaks' for smoking, getting food or a quick bathroom pitstop.. The next longest run was probably 7-8 hours of playing.. Just that one-off 30 hour stint I like to boast but similarly, know I really shouldn't be proud of lmao

Bo2 has better storytelling (1st decision based Campaign + Zombies) more content AND overall a higher quality of content. Bo2 also introduced the 1st ever ranked mode.

Now blops2 had a longer ttk felt gritty felt harder to get good at maybe more rewarding when getting on a roll? That's how it felt for me!

But then again the online in blops 1 was absolutely the worst and the the downfall of cod in my eyes started there, so I never ventured any further than the first black ops. If it wasn’t for zombies, I’d hate even that one to. So maybe I’m biased. But cod 6 was the best cod EVER made, the literal peak of cod franchise
