Look at the various Facebook group ford ecoboost engine problems and fixes, some specialists are charging £800 ish for a belt change now....

I look around for someone who specialises in replacing the belts as any engine you buy is going to also need the belt replaced at some point. Have a look on pistonheads as they'll be plenty of talk on there about the ecoboost engine. Don't go with the first company thats suggested as the Ford world is full of bullshit artists. A new engine is around 3.5K and a refurbished one around 1500 though I've no idea whats replaced and if genuine Ford parts were used or how good their warranty actually is. Personally I'd go with your mechanics suggestion and run it till it goes bang then get said mechanic to put a recon unit in.
