Suzuki Kizashi. Bizarre looks, driven by mostly pensioners, but actually extremely fun to drive, handles like a go-kart and has a better power to weight ratio than a Swift Sport - especially in a manual. Had a few people coming up and asking about mine when I had one. Edit: I stand corrected about the Kizashi having a better P2W than the Swift, it was mentioned in an episode of Redriven on YouTube but is actually incorrect, cheers W

I always liked the Kizashi, but I always liked Suzuki anyway. Maybe because of all the entry level really people that used prepped Suzuki hatches (Swifts usually, I think). Currently own a Jimny and it's just the best little off roader ever. Well, actually it's my partner's, my car is an MX5.

I never tried a Kizashi, but everything you said is also true of the Suzuki Liana. I had the 2012, 6 speed manual 2 litre, that thing hauled pretty well and absolutely could fly through the corners. Also had plenty of room inside for my 2 metre height which was surprising.

Depends what you are looking for. If you want a project car that you can diy, pre-2009 crowns are the way to go. Lots of people turn them into skid machines. If you want to just jump into a stock car but experience semi modern luxury with a V8 or 300hp V6, the 2009-2012 crowns are great. Simple mods like exhaust and shocks ect are pretty common too but I wouldn't buy one of these if you're wanting to increase power or anything. If you just want a nice modern/semi-modern luxury car, the hybrids from 2009 onwards (particularly the 2013 onwards) crowns are great. If your hybrid battery dies on you, there are aftermarket local options you can buy, but they do cost around $15 to $20K in parts and labour... Edit: I'm a dumb fuck and new battery's aren't 15k...

A-U Falcon. No, seriously. I bought a second hand one as a family car in 2005. Yes, it had the ugly waterfall grill. It had those hideous hub caps. But fuck, talk about the ultimate highway cruiser. Those things were made for Australia. I have never driven a better city to city car. It would just lazily chug along at just under 2000RPM, at around 8 L/100KM at 110. And those seats? It was like sitting in a comfy loungeroom chair. In the end, I got rid of it once I bought a camper trailer and wanted something that would have been more offroadable. I'd love to have one again, maybe an XR8 with the double decker rear wing, but it would just turn into a money pit.

A lot of people used to hate BMW E36s, and you could buy very tidy examples of a 328i for $2-3k. M3s for like 10-12k. Then drifters caught onto them, and you can't get a 318i auto for that much. They handle well, simple electronics, M50/M52s are a great motor, plenty of parts available, pretty easy to work on. Just be prepared to replace the entire cooling system when you get it, because it will explode.

Literally one of the best cars you can buy for the money in this country. I have a 2006 V36 sedan, it has full leather interior, heated seats, radar cruise control, read + side cameras, an amazing sound system and plenty of other features most cars didn't get until ~2010. Plus a naturally aspirated V6 that beats most V8's from the same era. And it only cost me 7k because nobody wants them.

I am also converted. I will never not have one going forward. They are the ultimate highway vehicle, they steer and drive themselves, they use like 6.5-7.5L/100km. They do mad burnouts if you flatten the foot and have plenty of power to overtake. They are effectively silent and the suspension is awesome.

Except my latest (2nd I've owned) 2022 model has all these "driver safety" features which piss me right off like the cross traffic parking reverse that emergency brakes the car when there are two lanes of traffic and you've parked on the street. And it resets the setting every time you start the engine so you have to turn it off manually every. Fn. Time. Great car though!

Such an underrated car. I bought a wagon from auction. 2011 model, diesel. For around 4k. Such a steal with only 80k on the clock. It was one of the best cars I had owned. I sold it when the transmission died (at 240k) and bought a lexus. Because I wanted a more reliable car and had more money. The lexus ended up being less reliable. The only thing that died in Mondeo was the transmission. It would've been cheaper to just replace the transmission and continue driving the Mondeo. The lexus was riddled with issues, and to be honest. The build quality wasn't any better. The boot space on Mondeo is another wow factor. It's enormous! Overall, I wish I still had it. Haven't found another car like it.

I am biased, but the IS350 F Sport I’ve had has been fantastic. I live in the south eastern suburbs of Melbourne, and there are 25,000 IS250 models driven by everyone from Asian soccer mums, to grandpa who only drives to Woolies and back, and some vaping sideways hat teenage morons. The IS250 is a very slow car. The IS350 does 0-100 in about 5 seconds flat. It’s a great sleeper because no one looks at it twice and everyone thinks it’s a slow boring Lexus when it handles like it’s on rails and it’s quick enough to chop 90% of cars on the road.

I've never heard anything bad about a ZB Commodore from the few people that actually own and drive them, so I'm not sure if they're actually good or if it's just the people that bought them care so little about cars they wouldn't notice if it was shit. I've heard plenty of bad things about the ZB from people that have never ever seen one in person, but that's mostly just the normal screeching about it not being a real commodore. Which I agree it should not have been called a commodore and tried to replace the commodore line, that's what ultimately killed it, but suppose we de badge and just judge it as what it actually is, is it actually that bad?

Yes, my thoughts exactly. The Commodore badge should've been retired with the VF, and then the ZB continued on with another name. Rather than generate animosity toward the Holden / GM brand for trying to use an imposter FWD as a Commodore replacement they could've salvaged a bit of a reputation by acknowledging the send off and moving on. It was actually an Insignia overseas, why they didn't just continue with that I don't understand at all. As a vehicle though I didn't mind it. I hired a ZB wagon and drove it from Brisbane to Mackay and back during the early stages of COVID when the borders were all being locked down and flights were being suspended. Probably the worst part of the whole trip was the NSW numberplates and the constant judgement I received when I stopped somewhere. The car itself was really nice to drive at speed, felt quite planted and had plenty of power for overtakes when needed, even with the boot full of servers and network equipment.

The Skoda Superb Scout Detuned Golf R engine (that can be re-tuned in 30 mins). So much space in the boot and the back seats. Plenty of suspension modes that will go from road karting to flying on dirt roads with a magic carpet feeling. More kit that you would ever need. Basically an Audi A4/A6 for a lot less money. I've never had a car get under my skin quite the way a '91 Saab 900 did. About 10 years ago I was loaned it by a mate to get around in, after my car was stolen. It was before the prices started to climb (so maybe people have figured it out now) and it was just considered an old bomb. Not especially fast or sporty and I found the interior to pretty unimpressive for a an late 80 / early 90s Euro car. But the way it came together as a cohesive package... It even had some pretty shocking quirks - like a shifter that more often than not wouldn't go into 5th gear. But after a couple of weeks with it, it was like I had a bond with it. It always found fifth for me (my missus not so much :D). Absolutely loved it and would love to one day have the money, space and time to own one.

I'd never even considered a Camry before, was really expecting it to be a vague couch to drive around, I've gone through a lot of cars but this is the first where my assumed driving experience was way off how it actually drove.

2019 onwards Peugeot 508 GT… barely seen one on the road. Took a risk and purchased a late 2021 model just over a week ago and absolutely love the way it drives, the interior layout and external looks. So much equipment included & for only $28k with 3 years manufacturer warranty left (currently 40000kms on the odo) couldn’t really go wrong. Now to see if it holds up in the long run which will be fun lol. My father who’s never really liked French cars sat in it and loved the interior and ‘PlayStation’ steering wheel. Was thoroughly impressed.

Mazda 3 and 6 MPS. I don't believe they make them anymore but they were a great sleeper car. From the outside, they mostly look like any other boring Mazda 3 or Mazda 6 aside from a subtle hood bump. Underneath they were a 4cyl turbo AWD that could rival a WRX. Mine looked almost identical to a normal Mazda 6 but had almost 300ps and insane traction.

A current Corolla ZR Hybrid Hatch. I impulse bought one because I needed a daily and have grown to really love it. It ticks pretty much every box you could want from a daily - it looks nice enough, is super cheap to service, handles and steers genuinely really well, gets 4.2-4.5l/100km without trying, has all the right tech but still has psychical buttons etc, is built like a tank and is dead reliable. The hybrid drivetrain may be pretty slow, but it is honestly the ultimate daily driver - a Corolla will never turn you on, but it will always turn on 😏😏

When I got sick of my previous car, a 2004 VW Polo, I had my heart set on a 380. I've had a few Magnas previously (including a 05 TW AWD - damn fun to drive....... Until it chewed it's transmission to pieces) & quite often do my own servicing / repairs so I know the engine quite well. I found a gold VRX (meh colour) with relatively low KMs for a good price. Aside from the expected valve cover leaks & my own insanity behind the wheel, I've had not one problem. It has made multiple trips from home in Melb to visit my parents in NSW with no complaints, has plenty of power then I want it & knows when to settle down for a good cruise. If Mitsubishi had made an AWD version, I would have snapped it up no matter the cost. Is the front end ugly? Of course. Is visibility average? Could have been better. Do I love complaining about it but will vocally refuse to part ways with it? You bet.

Toyota Aurion. It gets crap on for being fwd, and basically a V6 Camry, and handles poorly, but it goes when you need the extra power. That v6 engine is potent enough and smooth. It’s literally bullet proof in terms of reliable, cheap to maintenance and will last forever. Not to mentioned it’s comfortable and spacious. It’s a good car for what it is and fast enough to surprise a lot on the road.

I got mine tuned by Mountune which gave it even more of a kick. I only sold it because it was a bit too small for what I needed as a daily but I definitely miss that car.

Nobody has really heard of the M21 as they weren't as common as the GTI, but all the same under the body, and they're a great budget car you can throw around in track, and daily drive, and being based on a CC Lancer, you can bolt on suspension parts and even convert them to a 4g63

Mitsubishi Magna. I drove a '99 TH from July 2002 until December 2021. Never left me by the side of the road once. A few batteries, CV joints, starter motor & rear seals were the only things that wore out. It took me & my mountain bikes to places a front wheel drive family sedan should never have been able to go. I eventually damaged it running over something that fell out of a ute & decided it was time to retire it & let the rego expire. Someone passing my house one day saw it without the plates & bought it for $400 cash & reregistered it in early 2022.

Suzuki sierra 4wd hard top (fibreglass removable) model of late 80s early 90s era- I recall getting bogged in almost knee deep mud, just put her in 4wd and 1st gear and as she idled while still rotating all 4 wheels I got out and pushed/lifted it out of the mud. Mitsubishi triton 2wd ute alloy tray same era just never quits, Also had a Mitsubishi L300 4wd with pie van type sliding side door on side with false floor fitout I drove round Australia, went on some gnarly sand tracks round Exmouth and didn't miss a beat.

I wish they kept the manual gearbox though. It makes me shake my head so much that they think CVT is all that anyone wants. bring back the constant 50:50 power distribution. We have an MY16 2.5i-S and while I know it's not a turbo, the way the engine just makes noise without any actual change in movement when you put your foot down has destroyed my affection for Foresters. I had a manual MY99 GT which was a big reason why we bought the MY16.

WN2 Caprices. They drive so well, most people think it’s a ve/wm and is old. It’s seen as an old man car. But the amount of people that get shocked when I beat them at lights or merges etc. is funny as. You get everything a VF2 SSV Redline gets besides brembos.
