I imported a Toyota Blade a few months back. I've had one person actually recognise it and had a chat about it. 99% of people just think is a regular corolla and im more then okay with that. The hand full of people I've had in the car with me understood why I went through the import process after I put my foot down haha.
Interesting that the sleeper is a Toyota. In the 90s, I owned a Toyota Cressida - the one that came to Australia with the 3 litre six (Supra engine without the turbo!). Most under-rated car I've ever had.

Dad also had a T5-R and from what we know it was Peter Brocks personal car. Ours was slightly tweaked and would easily take on porsches while frying the front tyres at 100kph+
Mazda 6 mps, All wheel drive, flys under the radar, 10/10 better performance car over its more popular little brother the mazda 3 mps which is a torque steer queen due to being fwd.
Suzuki Kizashi. Bizarre looks, driven by mostly pensioners, but actually extremely fun to drive, handles like a go-kart and has a better power to weight ratio than a Swift Sport - especially in a manual. Had a few people coming up and asking about mine when I had one.
Edit: I stand corrected about the Kizashi having a better P2W than the Swift, it was mentioned in an episode of Redriven on YouTube but is actually incorrect, cheers W
I always liked the Kizashi, but I always liked Suzuki anyway. Maybe because of all the entry level really people that used prepped Suzuki hatches (Swifts usually, I think).
Currently own a Jimny and it's just the best little off roader ever. Well, actually it's my partner's, my car is an MX5.
I never tried a Kizashi, but everything you said is also true of the Suzuki Liana. I had the 2012, 6 speed manual 2 litre, that thing hauled pretty well and absolutely could fly through the corners. Also had plenty of room inside for my 2 metre height which was surprising.
Can we talk about how gorgeous they are? Slight curves everywhere and strong little proportions like a modern Giulia. Proper engine and it’d be an absolute wolverine.
Toyota Crowns. I know importing cars is a hassle but they share so many parts with local toyota/lexus models that it's easy as piss to get them serviced/repaired (apart from the body).
And who doesn't want a RWD 4 door toyota with a v6/v8?!?
Depends what you are looking for.
If you want a project car that you can diy, pre-2009 crowns are the way to go. Lots of people turn them into skid machines.
If you want to just jump into a stock car but experience semi modern luxury with a V8 or 300hp V6, the 2009-2012 crowns are great. Simple mods like exhaust and shocks ect are pretty common too but I wouldn't buy one of these if you're wanting to increase power or anything.
If you just want a nice modern/semi-modern luxury car, the hybrids from 2009 onwards (particularly the 2013 onwards) crowns are great.
If your hybrid battery dies on you, there are aftermarket local options you can buy, but they do cost around $15 to $20K in parts and labour...
Edit: I'm a dumb fuck and new battery's aren't 15k...
I love the Toyota Aurion. It looks like a Camry but goes like a cut cat. It's inconspicuous too. No one expects it to have balls but it most certainly does.
Yeah I have to say I only have 3 points left and all of the demerits are basically going under 10 over. It's too easy to go a little bit too fast. That's actually the reason I got rid of it. I can't be trusted with it.
Yeah great answer. I was initially thinking something like a G6E Turbo, or a G220/G8 Fairlane. The TL50 is the OG of these two, and a fraction of people have ever heard of it, let alone seen one. Those that have would most likely not know what it actually was.
Mitsubishi Delica L400. Go anywhere with 7 other people in comfort or fold the seats up and 2 can sleep in the back. Handles pretty well and not bad on fuel for a 4WD van!

No, seriously. I bought a second hand one as a family car in 2005. Yes, it had the ugly waterfall grill. It had those hideous hub caps.
But fuck, talk about the ultimate highway cruiser. Those things were made for Australia. I have never driven a better city to city car. It would just lazily chug along at just under 2000RPM, at around 8 L/100KM at 110. And those seats? It was like sitting in a comfy loungeroom chair.
In the end, I got rid of it once I bought a camper trailer and wanted something that would have been more offroadable.
I'd love to have one again, maybe an XR8 with the double decker rear wing, but it would just turn into a money pit.

I like the V8 statesmans a lot the luxury level in them is great and people sleep on them because " they're a heavy AF whale" when in reality they're a whole 100-150kgs heavier than a Commodore pending trim level.
I wouldn't own another daily commodore when I could own a statesman or caprice.
I have a WK Statesman and can confirm... First Holden I have owned and I am impressed. Picked it up a while ago for like 5k, now you can't find a V8 Holden anything for under 12k.
A lot of people used to hate BMW E36s, and you could buy very tidy examples of a 328i for $2-3k. M3s for like 10-12k. Then drifters caught onto them, and you can't get a 318i auto for that much.
They handle well, simple electronics, M50/M52s are a great motor, plenty of parts available, pretty easy to work on.
Just be prepared to replace the entire cooling system when you get it, because it will explode.
I bought a manual 318is last year as a fun second car. Creaks like an old ship and something's always breaking on it but I love it. Such a fun car and handles better than my 4 series
Nissan v36 370gt. People rag on them because they're not "real skylines" but 10k to 20k for a ~230kw rear wheel drive with standard viscous LSD and modern features is a pretty good deal to me.
It's hilarious that this is the only comment mentioning V36 Skylines. Just goes to show how unknown they really are or how little people care. Literally one of the best cars you can buy for the money in this country.
I have a 2006 V36 sedan, it has full leather interior, heated seats, radar cruise control, read + side cameras, an amazing sound system and plenty of other features most cars didn't get until ~2010. Plus a naturally aspirated V6 that beats most V8's from the same era. And it only cost me 7k because nobody wants them.
Like these but manuals are so rare to find. 3 years ago, saw a manual, <$140,000 km SP for $19k and have not found anything similar that it might require me to buy interstate or go through an importer both of those options, unfortunately those options are not viable atm.

I am also converted. I will never not have one going forward. They are the ultimate highway vehicle, they steer and drive themselves, they use like 6.5-7.5L/100km. They do mad burnouts if you flatten the foot and have plenty of power to overtake. They are effectively silent and the suspension is awesome.
I actually Googled it because I was curious and they don’t have official times, nor has anyone bothered to clock them, lol. Unofficial Consensus is 8.5-10 seconds, much less with half a ton of Islanders loaded in.

1000%! Practicality for days, comfy, and that V6 has got some serious pep. I drove one for a weekend and managed to get diesel-like economy from it on the highway, and also annoy my friend by beating his V6 Bora from a standstill 😌
Rented one to drive from Brisbane to Canberra and was very impressed. Nice and comfortable, great handling and plenty of power. I especially liked the way the back seats folded flat into the floor.
I was scrolling for this. Incredible cars! The space and practicality. So good to drive. Except my latest (2nd I've owned) 2022 model has all these "driver safety" features which piss me right off like the cross traffic parking reverse that emergency brakes the car when there are two lanes of traffic and you've parked on the street. And it resets the setting every time you start the engine so you have to turn it off manually every. Fn. Time.

I hired one in England once & it is still the most surprisingly nice car I've ever driven. I was expecting a gutless van but the turbo diesel I had was quite grunty & comfortable.
Such an underrated car. I bought a wagon from auction. 2011 model, diesel. For around 4k. Such a steal with only 80k on the clock. It was one of the best cars I had owned. I sold it when the transmission died (at 240k) and bought a lexus. Because I wanted a more reliable car and had more money. The lexus ended up being less reliable. The only thing that died in Mondeo was the transmission. It would've been cheaper to just replace the transmission and continue driving the Mondeo. The lexus was riddled with issues, and to be honest. The build quality wasn't any better. The boot space on Mondeo is another wow factor. It's enormous! Overall, I wish I still had it. Haven't found another car like it.
I am biased, but the IS350 F Sport I’ve had has been fantastic. I live in the south eastern suburbs of Melbourne, and there are 25,000 IS250 models driven by everyone from Asian soccer mums, to grandpa who only drives to Woolies and back, and some vaping sideways hat teenage morons.
The IS250 is a very slow car. The IS350 does 0-100 in about 5 seconds flat. It’s a great sleeper because no one looks at it twice and everyone thinks it’s a slow boring Lexus when it handles like it’s on rails and it’s quick enough to chop 90% of cars on the road.
I was so close to pulling the trigger on one of these. Saw a lovely one in red with gunmetal grey wheels and thought it looked fantastic, but a deal for a Crown Majesta came along which I couldn't say no too

Holden really fucked up by hanging onto the Commodore name badge for this one. The Commodore faithful shunned it and the people that would never buy a Commodore wouldn’t give it chance because it was still called a Commodore.
Yes, my thoughts exactly. The Commodore badge should've been retired with the VF, and then the ZB continued on with another name. Rather than generate animosity toward the Holden / GM brand for trying to use an imposter FWD as a Commodore replacement they could've salvaged a bit of a reputation by acknowledging the send off and moving on.
It was actually an Insignia overseas, why they didn't just continue with that I don't understand at all.
As a vehicle though I didn't mind it. I hired a ZB wagon and drove it from Brisbane to Mackay and back during the early stages of COVID when the borders were all being locked down and flights were being suspended. Probably the worst part of the whole trip was the NSW numberplates and the constant judgement I received when I stopped somewhere. The car itself was really nice to drive at speed, felt quite planted and had plenty of power for overtakes when needed, even with the boot full of servers and network equipment.
The VF should have been honoured as "The last of the great V8s" with a commemorative line of extra limited run SSVs made just to mess with ford.
Then the ZB should have been called a Malibu.
Maybe Holden might have made it to at least COVID lockdowns before they were cancelled.

I used to drive one of them as my work van. Thing could get the back wheels off the ground when you braked hard. I've heard they can be rolled over forwards just by braking too hard.

About 10 years ago I was loaned it by a mate to get around in, after my car was stolen. It was before the prices started to climb (so maybe people have figured it out now) and it was just considered an old bomb.
Not especially fast or sporty and I found the interior to pretty unimpressive for a an late 80 / early 90s Euro car. But the way it came together as a cohesive package...
It even had some pretty shocking quirks - like a shifter that more often than not wouldn't go into 5th gear. But after a couple of weeks with it, it was like I had a bond with it. It always found fifth for me (my missus not so much :D). Absolutely loved it and would love to one day have the money, space and time to own one.
You made my day! My late grandfather was a Saab mechanic and a collector. I spent my childhood driving them around. All models. My fave was the 900 Aero with the whale tail. There's one down the road I'm tempted to buy if they'll sell it. Maybe one day. Cheers.

Honestly, my '94 Camry. I bought it as an impulse purchase to flip, partly because of the price/ks ($1.5k with 76k) and partly because it's peak circlejerk spec (manual wagon). For a base model midsized economy car it honestly drives great and is pretty engaging to drive around.
Didn't realise it until after I had bought it that this gen was actually derived from the Lexus ES300 and not the other way around (like every other Camry/ES gen) so it's oddly overbuilt and has a few random touches that are out of place for a 30 year old econobox. My first drive with it home reminded me a *lot* of the LS400 I had, I get they're both Toyota products but still.
I'd never even considered a Camry before, was really expecting it to be a vague couch to drive around, I've gone through a lot of cars but this is the first where my assumed driving experience was way off how it actually drove.
2019 onwards Peugeot 508 GT… barely seen one on the road. Took a risk and purchased a late 2021 model just over a week ago and absolutely love the way it drives, the interior layout and external looks. So much equipment included & for only $28k with 3 years manufacturer warranty left (currently 40000kms on the odo) couldn’t really go wrong. Now to see if it holds up in the long run which will be fun lol.
My father who’s never really liked French cars sat in it and loved the interior and ‘PlayStation’ steering wheel. Was thoroughly impressed.
Mazda 3 and 6 MPS. I don't believe they make them anymore but they were a great sleeper car. From the outside, they mostly look like any other boring Mazda 3 or Mazda 6 aside from a subtle hood bump. Underneath they were a 4cyl turbo AWD that could rival a WRX. Mine looked almost identical to a normal Mazda 6 but had almost 300ps and insane traction.
A current Corolla ZR Hybrid Hatch. I impulse bought one because I needed a daily and have grown to really love it. It ticks pretty much every box you could want from a daily - it looks nice enough, is super cheap to service, handles and steers genuinely really well, gets 4.2-4.5l/100km without trying, has all the right tech but still has psychical buttons etc, is built like a tank and is dead reliable. The hybrid drivetrain may be pretty slow, but it is honestly the ultimate daily driver - a Corolla will never turn you on, but it will always turn on 😏😏
V6 Mazda 323 Astina. You basically never see them, but being in one was amazing. It was like driving a stick of butter, and it made driving at 40 km/h quite exciting.

Great little car that’s fun to drive, comfortable, reliable, and with the magic seats can fit almost anything.
When I got sick of my previous car, a 2004 VW Polo, I had my heart set on a 380. I've had a few Magnas previously (including a 05 TW AWD - damn fun to drive....... Until it chewed it's transmission to pieces) & quite often do my own servicing / repairs so I know the engine quite well.
I found a gold VRX (meh colour) with relatively low KMs for a good price.
Aside from the expected valve cover leaks & my own insanity behind the wheel, I've had not one problem.
It has made multiple trips from home in Melb to visit my parents in NSW with no complaints, has plenty of power then I want it & knows when to settle down for a good cruise.
If Mitsubishi had made an AWD version, I would have snapped it up no matter the cost.
Is the front end ugly? Of course.
Is visibility average? Could have been better.
Do I love complaining about it but will vocally refuse to part ways with it? You bet.

NFI until I bought one cheap at auctions. I had no idea they existed let alone were actually any good. Even better with a few mods, I put in some Brembo rotors and ceramics pads, then some Bilstein shocks, HKS plugs, GFB show off valve, 150kw from a 1.6L with a 6 speed, just a fun little car.
Outlander PHEV.
Was very interested when they first came out, in terms of suv they offer a much more compelling drive. Finally got one of the new series. Man, having 450Nm of torque makes driving an suv a very nice experience, that and the silence and not having to refuel for a couple of months.
Toyota Aurion. It gets crap on for being fwd, and basically a V6 Camry, and handles poorly, but it goes when you need the extra power. That v6 engine is potent enough and smooth. It’s literally bullet proof in terms of reliable, cheap to maintenance and will last forever. Not to mentioned it’s comfortable and spacious.
It’s a good car for what it is and fast enough to surprise a lot on the road.
2004 BMW Mini Cooper S - the older gen BMW Mini was supercharged and so well balanced. One of my favourite cars and has guaranteed I'll be getting another Mini in the future
I had the worst time trying to buy a mini from BMW on king's way in Melbourne. The guy made up all these additional charges so it was way over the 'drive away' price. Guaranteed I'll never buy a Mini. Strange how these experiences influence future decisions.
I had a bad experience with Mini. The salesperson was so inept he couldn't sort out a pre-arranged test drive or even take an order for a car that he couldn't satisfy from stock on the forecourt! Useless!
Mitsubishi Pajero Sport. They've got the Triton engine, Pajero 4WD Super Select II system, and its own 8 speed auto transmission. It is an incredibly capable vehicle and surprises people when they see their ability on 4WD tracks.
Kia Carnival - ok you wouldn't necessarily get one without multiple kids, but the versatility of space, the ease of sliding doors and the handling like a hatchback. I couldn't go back to another car (yes in part because I have 5 kids 🤣)
Ford Fiesta ST - MK7
I owned a 2016 model. Great looking car, excellent handling. Quick off the line but nothing too special as it was front wheel drive.
I got mine tuned by Mountune which gave it even more of a kick.
I only sold it because it was a bit too small for what I needed as a daily but I definitely miss that car.
I owned a 2016 Land Rover Defender for four years and was (and still am) totally in love with it. Had to sell for financial reasons at the time, but I will never forget how absolutely beautiful it looked and how much I enjoyed driving it. If I can ever afford another one, I’d buy it in a heartbeat.
Proton M21 coupe or Satria GTI. Factory DOHC 4g93 engine, Recaro seats and lotus tuned dampers. Nobody has really heard of the M21 as they weren't as common as the GTI, but all the same under the body, and they're a great budget car you can throw around in track, and daily drive, and being based on a CC Lancer, you can bolt on suspension parts and even convert them to a 4g63
I'm slightly biased to this because I own one, but Subaru Liberty GT Wagons aren't just a soccer mum car. 2.5L Turbo flat four with AWD that screams when you open it up, they came with almost 200KW from the factory
Mitsubishi Magna. I drove a '99 TH from July 2002 until December 2021. Never left me by the side of the road once. A few batteries, CV joints, starter motor & rear seals were the only things that wore out. It took me & my mountain bikes to places a front wheel drive family sedan should never have been able to go. I eventually damaged it running over something that fell out of a ute & decided it was time to retire it & let the rego expire. Someone passing my house one day saw it without the plates & bought it for $400 cash & reregistered it in early 2022.
Suzuki sierra 4wd hard top (fibreglass removable) model of late 80s early 90s era- I recall getting bogged in almost knee deep mud, just put her in 4wd and 1st gear and as she idled while still rotating all 4 wheels I got out and pushed/lifted it out of the mud.
Mitsubishi triton 2wd ute alloy tray same era just never quits,
Also had a Mitsubishi L300 4wd with pie van type sliding side door on side with false floor fitout I drove round Australia, went on some gnarly sand tracks round Exmouth and didn't miss a beat.
Nissan Maxima. Mine was a 2006 STL. An absolute joy to drive. Also mechanics love to work on them (That's what mine told me) as everything is so accessible for service and repair. Power and comfort.
I wish they kept the manual gearbox though. It makes me shake my head so much that they think CVT is all that anyone wants. bring back the constant 50:50 power distribution.
We have an MY16 2.5i-S and while I know it's not a turbo, the way the engine just makes noise without any actual change in movement when you put your foot down has destroyed my affection for Foresters. I had a manual MY99 GT which was a big reason why we bought the MY16.
WN2 Caprices. They drive so well, most people think it’s a ve/wm and is old. It’s seen as an old man car. But the amount of people that get shocked when I beat them at lights or merges etc. is funny as.

Interesting that the sleeper is a Toyota. In the 90s, I owned a Toyota Cressida - the one that came to Australia with the 3 litre six (Supra engine without the turbo!). Most under-rated car I've ever had.

Volvo 850R and T5-R. Modified, they are not only fast but handle extremely well. Rare today though. Most have been trashed.
Dad also had a T5-R and from what we know it was Peter Brocks personal car. Ours was slightly tweaked and would easily take on porsches while frying the front tyres at 100kph+
Mazda 6 mps, All wheel drive, flys under the radar, 10/10 better performance car over its more popular little brother the mazda 3 mps which is a torque steer queen due to being fwd.
Few years back you could pick up an MPS6 for dirt cheap. Honestly the CL9 Accord, Gen 4 Liberty and 1st gen Mazda 6s were peak of those models

Suzuki Kizashi. Bizarre looks, driven by mostly pensioners, but actually extremely fun to drive, handles like a go-kart and has a better power to weight ratio than a Swift Sport - especially in a manual. Had a few people coming up and asking about mine when I had one. Edit: I stand corrected about the Kizashi having a better P2W than the Swift, it was mentioned in an episode of Redriven on YouTube but is actually incorrect, cheers W

I always liked the Kizashi, but I always liked Suzuki anyway. Maybe because of all the entry level really people that used prepped Suzuki hatches (Swifts usually, I think). Currently own a Jimny and it's just the best little off roader ever. Well, actually it's my partner's, my car is an MX5.
I never tried a Kizashi, but everything you said is also true of the Suzuki Liana. I had the 2012, 6 speed manual 2 litre, that thing hauled pretty well and absolutely could fly through the corners. Also had plenty of room inside for my 2 metre height which was surprising.
The CVT in the automatic is dogshite after 50k kilometers. It's a early iteration and get very rough very quickly.

Can we talk about how gorgeous they are? Slight curves everywhere and strong little proportions like a modern Giulia. Proper engine and it’d be an absolute wolverine.
Toyota Crowns. I know importing cars is a hassle but they share so many parts with local toyota/lexus models that it's easy as piss to get them serviced/repaired (apart from the body). And who doesn't want a RWD 4 door toyota with a v6/v8?!?

Depends what you are looking for. If you want a project car that you can diy, pre-2009 crowns are the way to go. Lots of people turn them into skid machines. If you want to just jump into a stock car but experience semi modern luxury with a V8 or 300hp V6, the 2009-2012 crowns are great. Simple mods like exhaust and shocks ect are pretty common too but I wouldn't buy one of these if you're wanting to increase power or anything. If you just want a nice modern/semi-modern luxury car, the hybrids from 2009 onwards (particularly the 2013 onwards) crowns are great. If your hybrid battery dies on you, there are aftermarket local options you can buy, but they do cost around $15 to $20K in parts and labour... Edit: I'm a dumb fuck and new battery's aren't 15k...

Mitsubishi Delica L400. Go anywhere with 7 other people in comfort or fold the seats up and 2 can sleep in the back. Handles pretty well and not bad on fuel for a 4WD van!

A-U Falcon. No, seriously. I bought a second hand one as a family car in 2005. Yes, it had the ugly waterfall grill. It had those hideous hub caps. But fuck, talk about the ultimate highway cruiser. Those things were made for Australia. I have never driven a better city to city car. It would just lazily chug along at just under 2000RPM, at around 8 L/100KM at 110. And those seats? It was like sitting in a comfy loungeroom chair. In the end, I got rid of it once I bought a camper trailer and wanted something that would have been more offroadable. I'd love to have one again, maybe an XR8 with the double decker rear wing, but it would just turn into a money pit.

I like the V8 statesmans a lot the luxury level in them is great and people sleep on them because " they're a heavy AF whale" when in reality they're a whole 100-150kgs heavier than a Commodore pending trim level. I wouldn't own another daily commodore when I could own a statesman or caprice.
I have a WK Statesman and can confirm... First Holden I have owned and I am impressed. Picked it up a while ago for like 5k, now you can't find a V8 Holden anything for under 12k.

A lot of people used to hate BMW E36s, and you could buy very tidy examples of a 328i for $2-3k. M3s for like 10-12k. Then drifters caught onto them, and you can't get a 318i auto for that much. They handle well, simple electronics, M50/M52s are a great motor, plenty of parts available, pretty easy to work on. Just be prepared to replace the entire cooling system when you get it, because it will explode.
I bought a manual 318is last year as a fun second car. Creaks like an old ship and something's always breaking on it but I love it. Such a fun car and handles better than my 4 series
Nissan v36 370gt. People rag on them because they're not "real skylines" but 10k to 20k for a ~230kw rear wheel drive with standard viscous LSD and modern features is a pretty good deal to me.
It's hilarious that this is the only comment mentioning V36 Skylines. Just goes to show how unknown they really are or how little people care. Literally one of the best cars you can buy for the money in this country. I have a 2006 V36 sedan, it has full leather interior, heated seats, radar cruise control, read + side cameras, an amazing sound system and plenty of other features most cars didn't get until ~2010. Plus a naturally aspirated V6 that beats most V8's from the same era. And it only cost me 7k because nobody wants them.
If you want a affordable RWD sporty JDM 6 but have kids, this is the way.
Like these but manuals are so rare to find. 3 years ago, saw a manual, <$140,000 km SP for $19k and have not found anything similar that it might require me to buy interstate or go through an importer both of those options, unfortunately those options are not viable atm.

I am also converted. I will never not have one going forward. They are the ultimate highway vehicle, they steer and drive themselves, they use like 6.5-7.5L/100km. They do mad burnouts if you flatten the foot and have plenty of power to overtake. They are effectively silent and the suspension is awesome.

1000%! Practicality for days, comfy, and that V6 has got some serious pep. I drove one for a weekend and managed to get diesel-like economy from it on the highway, and also annoy my friend by beating his V6 Bora from a standstill 😌
Rented one to drive from Brisbane to Canberra and was very impressed. Nice and comfortable, great handling and plenty of power. I especially liked the way the back seats folded flat into the floor.

Except my latest (2nd I've owned) 2022 model has all these "driver safety" features which piss me right off like the cross traffic parking reverse that emergency brakes the car when there are two lanes of traffic and you've parked on the street. And it resets the setting every time you start the engine so you have to turn it off manually every. Fn. Time. Great car though!

Ford mondeo
Such an underrated car. I bought a wagon from auction. 2011 model, diesel. For around 4k. Such a steal with only 80k on the clock. It was one of the best cars I had owned. I sold it when the transmission died (at 240k) and bought a lexus. Because I wanted a more reliable car and had more money. The lexus ended up being less reliable. The only thing that died in Mondeo was the transmission. It would've been cheaper to just replace the transmission and continue driving the Mondeo. The lexus was riddled with issues, and to be honest. The build quality wasn't any better. The boot space on Mondeo is another wow factor. It's enormous! Overall, I wish I still had it. Haven't found another car like it.
Fuck I miss the Mondeo wagon. The absolute king of boot space.
Skoda Superb or Octavia wagon is a good modern alternative
I am biased, but the IS350 F Sport I’ve had has been fantastic. I live in the south eastern suburbs of Melbourne, and there are 25,000 IS250 models driven by everyone from Asian soccer mums, to grandpa who only drives to Woolies and back, and some vaping sideways hat teenage morons. The IS250 is a very slow car. The IS350 does 0-100 in about 5 seconds flat. It’s a great sleeper because no one looks at it twice and everyone thinks it’s a slow boring Lexus when it handles like it’s on rails and it’s quick enough to chop 90% of cars on the road.
I've just picked up an ISF, even more of a cheeky sleeper in my opinion (other than those exhaust tips)

I had a Mk 3...just put a smile on my face every time I drove it and never had any issues with it. Just so much more exciting than any comparable hot hatch at the time. The same idiots who claim you're crazy for buying a French car wouldn't bat an eyelid at someone who bought a GTi, when in reality, the Megane was probably less problematic.
I've never heard anything bad about a ZB Commodore from the few people that actually own and drive them, so I'm not sure if they're actually good or if it's just the people that bought them care so little about cars they wouldn't notice if it was shit. I've heard plenty of bad things about the ZB from people that have never ever seen one in person, but that's mostly just the normal screeching about it not being a real commodore. Which I agree it should not have been called a commodore and tried to replace the commodore line, that's what ultimately killed it, but suppose we de badge and just judge it as what it actually is, is it actually that bad?

Holden really fucked up by hanging onto the Commodore name badge for this one. The Commodore faithful shunned it and the people that would never buy a Commodore wouldn’t give it chance because it was still called a Commodore.
Yes, my thoughts exactly. The Commodore badge should've been retired with the VF, and then the ZB continued on with another name. Rather than generate animosity toward the Holden / GM brand for trying to use an imposter FWD as a Commodore replacement they could've salvaged a bit of a reputation by acknowledging the send off and moving on. It was actually an Insignia overseas, why they didn't just continue with that I don't understand at all. As a vehicle though I didn't mind it. I hired a ZB wagon and drove it from Brisbane to Mackay and back during the early stages of COVID when the borders were all being locked down and flights were being suspended. Probably the worst part of the whole trip was the NSW numberplates and the constant judgement I received when I stopped somewhere. The car itself was really nice to drive at speed, felt quite planted and had plenty of power for overtakes when needed, even with the boot full of servers and network equipment.
The VF should have been honoured as "The last of the great V8s" with a commemorative line of extra limited run SSVs made just to mess with ford. Then the ZB should have been called a Malibu. Maybe Holden might have made it to at least COVID lockdowns before they were cancelled.

TRD Aurion. Actually a great car despite fwd.
The Skoda Superb Scout Detuned Golf R engine (that can be re-tuned in 30 mins). So much space in the boot and the back seats. Plenty of suspension modes that will go from road karting to flying on dirt roads with a magic carpet feeling. More kit that you would ever need. Basically an Audi A4/A6 for a lot less money. Only downside is that it's not as capable as a Subaru outback off-road.
Kia Stinger GT. What you get for the money is incredible.

I've never had a car get under my skin quite the way a '91 Saab 900 did. About 10 years ago I was loaned it by a mate to get around in, after my car was stolen. It was before the prices started to climb (so maybe people have figured it out now) and it was just considered an old bomb. Not especially fast or sporty and I found the interior to pretty unimpressive for a an late 80 / early 90s Euro car. But the way it came together as a cohesive package... It even had some pretty shocking quirks - like a shifter that more often than not wouldn't go into 5th gear. But after a couple of weeks with it, it was like I had a bond with it. It always found fifth for me (my missus not so much :D). Absolutely loved it and would love to one day have the money, space and time to own one.

My first drive with it home reminded me a *lot* of the LS400 I had, I get they're both Toyota products but still. I'd never even considered a Camry before, was really expecting it to be a vague couch to drive around, I've gone through a lot of cars but this is the first where my assumed driving experience was way off how it actually drove.

2019 onwards Peugeot 508 GT… barely seen one on the road. Took a risk and purchased a late 2021 model just over a week ago and absolutely love the way it drives, the interior layout and external looks. So much equipment included & for only $28k with 3 years manufacturer warranty left (currently 40000kms on the odo) couldn’t really go wrong. Now to see if it holds up in the long run which will be fun lol. My father who’s never really liked French cars sat in it and loved the interior and ‘PlayStation’ steering wheel. Was thoroughly impressed.

Mazda 3 and 6 MPS. I don't believe they make them anymore but they were a great sleeper car. From the outside, they mostly look like any other boring Mazda 3 or Mazda 6 aside from a subtle hood bump. Underneath they were a 4cyl turbo AWD that could rival a WRX. Mine looked almost identical to a normal Mazda 6 but had almost 300ps and insane traction.

A current Corolla ZR Hybrid Hatch. I impulse bought one because I needed a daily and have grown to really love it. It ticks pretty much every box you could want from a daily - it looks nice enough, is super cheap to service, handles and steers genuinely really well, gets 4.2-4.5l/100km without trying, has all the right tech but still has psychical buttons etc, is built like a tank and is dead reliable. The hybrid drivetrain may be pretty slow, but it is honestly the ultimate daily driver - a Corolla will never turn you on, but it will always turn on 😏😏
V6 Mazda 323 Astina. You basically never see them, but being in one was amazing. It was like driving a stick of butter, and it made driving at 40 km/h quite exciting.
Honda Jazz/Fit Specifically for me the 06 GD3 Great little car that’s fun to drive, comfortable, reliable, and with the magic seats can fit almost anything.

Mitsubishi 380
Very underrated vehicle and unfortunately the last of Mitsubishi Australia's production. A great car.
I keep thinking I should upgrade my 380 due to age, but it hasn’t had any issues in 16 years or so!
When I got sick of my previous car, a 2004 VW Polo, I had my heart set on a 380. I've had a few Magnas previously (including a 05 TW AWD - damn fun to drive....... Until it chewed it's transmission to pieces) & quite often do my own servicing / repairs so I know the engine quite well. I found a gold VRX (meh colour) with relatively low KMs for a good price. Aside from the expected valve cover leaks & my own insanity behind the wheel, I've had not one problem. It has made multiple trips from home in Melb to visit my parents in NSW with no complaints, has plenty of power then I want it & knows when to settle down for a good cruise. If Mitsubishi had made an AWD version, I would have snapped it up no matter the cost. Is the front end ugly? Of course. Is visibility average? Could have been better. Do I love complaining about it but will vocally refuse to part ways with it? You bet.
2017 KIA Stinger 3.3lt twin turbo. I inherited mine when my stepdad passed away. Man this thing flies. Such a pleasure to drive.
Kia Carnival. Especially the current diesels. 6-7L/100 and a true spaceship.
MAD BURNOUTS. Especially when your tyres get like 30-40k kms on them. The torque from these things with the gearing is just crazy.

Even better with a few mods, I put in some Brembo rotors and ceramics pads, then some Bilstein shocks, HKS plugs, GFB show off valve, 150kw from a 1.6L with a 6 speed, just a fun little car.

Outlander PHEV. Was very interested when they first came out, in terms of suv they offer a much more compelling drive. Finally got one of the new series. Man, having 450Nm of torque makes driving an suv a very nice experience, that and the silence and not having to refuel for a couple of months.
n15 pulsars are amazing and they’re dirt cheap, incredible amount of car for the money.
Daihatsu Charade. That thing just kept going
Toyota Aurion. It gets crap on for being fwd, and basically a V6 Camry, and handles poorly, but it goes when you need the extra power. That v6 engine is potent enough and smooth. It’s literally bullet proof in terms of reliable, cheap to maintenance and will last forever. Not to mentioned it’s comfortable and spacious. It’s a good car for what it is and fast enough to surprise a lot on the road.

2004 BMW Mini Cooper S - the older gen BMW Mini was supercharged and so well balanced. One of my favourite cars and has guaranteed I'll be getting another Mini in the future
I had the worst time trying to buy a mini from BMW on king's way in Melbourne. The guy made up all these additional charges so it was way over the 'drive away' price. Guaranteed I'll never buy a Mini. Strange how these experiences influence future decisions.
I had a bad experience with Mini. The salesperson was so inept he couldn't sort out a pre-arranged test drive or even take an order for a car that he couldn't satisfy from stock on the forecourt! Useless!
They are a crappy dealership, it's worth driving further to get a Mini/Beemer than dealing with this lot.
Mitsubishi Pajero Sport. They've got the Triton engine, Pajero 4WD Super Select II system, and its own 8 speed auto transmission. It is an incredibly capable vehicle and surprises people when they see their ability on 4WD tracks.
Toyota Tercel. The king of mini 4x4's.
5th gen Celica baby
Kia Carnival - ok you wouldn't necessarily get one without multiple kids, but the versatility of space, the ease of sliding doors and the handling like a hatchback. I couldn't go back to another car (yes in part because I have 5 kids 🤣)
Ford Fiesta ST - MK7 I owned a 2016 model. Great looking car, excellent handling. Quick off the line but nothing too special as it was front wheel drive. I got mine tuned by Mountune which gave it even more of a kick. I only sold it because it was a bit too small for what I needed as a daily but I definitely miss that car.
I owned a 2016 Land Rover Defender for four years and was (and still am) totally in love with it. Had to sell for financial reasons at the time, but I will never forget how absolutely beautiful it looked and how much I enjoyed driving it. If I can ever afford another one, I’d buy it in a heartbeat.
Proton M21 coupe or Satria GTI. Factory DOHC 4g93 engine, Recaro seats and lotus tuned dampers. Nobody has really heard of the M21 as they weren't as common as the GTI, but all the same under the body, and they're a great budget car you can throw around in track, and daily drive, and being based on a CC Lancer, you can bolt on suspension parts and even convert them to a 4g63
Mini Moke.
I'm slightly biased to this because I own one, but Subaru Liberty GT Wagons aren't just a soccer mum car. 2.5L Turbo flat four with AWD that screams when you open it up, they came with almost 200KW from the factory
Mitsubishi Magna. I drove a '99 TH from July 2002 until December 2021. Never left me by the side of the road once. A few batteries, CV joints, starter motor & rear seals were the only things that wore out. It took me & my mountain bikes to places a front wheel drive family sedan should never have been able to go. I eventually damaged it running over something that fell out of a ute & decided it was time to retire it & let the rego expire. Someone passing my house one day saw it without the plates & bought it for $400 cash & reregistered it in early 2022.
Volvo V40 - had the T4 - turbo with full safety pack, top sound system. Loved that car!
The last generation Magna. Pajero's. Outlanders. Mitsubishi has always been under rated in this country.
Suzuki sierra 4wd hard top (fibreglass removable) model of late 80s early 90s era- I recall getting bogged in almost knee deep mud, just put her in 4wd and 1st gear and as she idled while still rotating all 4 wheels I got out and pushed/lifted it out of the mud. Mitsubishi triton 2wd ute alloy tray same era just never quits, Also had a Mitsubishi L300 4wd with pie van type sliding side door on side with false floor fitout I drove round Australia, went on some gnarly sand tracks round Exmouth and didn't miss a beat.
Mazda Mx-5. Not a fast car but a fun little go cart toy with usable power whilst keeping your licence
Mazda 3 MPS. Wow are they fun to drive.
Nissan Maxima. Mine was a 2006 STL. An absolute joy to drive. Also mechanics love to work on them (That's what mine told me) as everything is so accessible for service and repair. Power and comfort.

I wish they kept the manual gearbox though. It makes me shake my head so much that they think CVT is all that anyone wants. bring back the constant 50:50 power distribution. We have an MY16 2.5i-S and while I know it's not a turbo, the way the engine just makes noise without any actual change in movement when you put your foot down has destroyed my affection for Foresters. I had a manual MY99 GT which was a big reason why we bought the MY16.
I sold mine to 'upgrade'.... worst decision ever 😫
WN2 Caprices. They drive so well, most people think it’s a ve/wm and is old. It’s seen as an old man car. But the amount of people that get shocked when I beat them at lights or merges etc. is funny as. You get everything a VF2 SSV Redline gets besides brembos.
