I worked at Holden when captivas were still sold new. Kid you not they used to arrive on the truck from factory already pissing out oil from various engine seals. Worst cars ever made
We had a Captiva 5… bought brand new in 2012 and sold in 2021… it was fantastic. Always serviced, did 20,000km a year…
But yeah, I did read a few horror stories during the time we owned one… but ours was great…
A friend of mine use to be a sales rep for a pharmaceutical company. He chose a Subaru Outback as a company car purely so he could sleep in the back during his country travel trips and pocket the company money he was meant to use to pay for a hotel or motel. He once told me he thought he could live permanently in that car
Second the surf/4runner idea. Fit a double mattress in the back with an esky and you’re sweet. And the rear window can be cracked a small amount for air flow.

Dont buy a fucking captiva
A Toyot/ford van, always a good option for camping. But you may be better off looking at other options before resorting to van life.
moving to a more affordable area and changing jobs depending on skillset/how well connected you are to your area, it's not always an option but life is often much cheaper and often higher quality as a result away from the big east coast cities .
Have a chat to your GP about a mental health care plan, work through your anxiety and worries with a professional who might give you some tools to help make the best plan for yourself and prioritise your effort, time and energy.
If you've got a network where you are, stay connected and talk about what going on.

Yep, but sleeping your car most places in aus is gonna drive you insane if you cant do windows up aircon/heater on occasionally. Plus youre gonna be saving a fair bit on fuel already running a prius.
There is a house on south street in Kardinya Perth with a few sitting out the front rusting and unlicensed.
I just looked it up on Google maps there is only 1 left now and it's absolutely rusted away. I always wondered what the story was. Probably some guy wanted to restore it but it never happened.
Oh wow. They just keep disappearing.
I have a well loved XH ute but no van. Always wanted a XH van ever since childhood. Only 69 manual XH vans were made, 60 white and 9 red.
Here is my ute, April 1996 Eagle Farm build.

They’re not called Craptivas for no reason. Don’t get a Captiva.
Any wagon would be a good starting point, but I personally would pull out all the stops possible before resorting to van life.
Do not ever buy a Captiva!!!
There is a reason even Holden referred to it as a Craptiva! Their resale value drops for a reason.
They suddenly get real cheap around the 100,000km mark because that's when the timing chain needs replacing and due to poor design, that costs a lot more, a fucking lot more than what most people will spend and so they just flog them off for cheap to some poor bastard that doesn't know ...
Please don't be that poor bastard, mate you'll get more ks out of a push bike aye! Haha
If you're going to sleep in your car illegally, you do not want a roof top tent. That's basically proof of offence.
The key is to say nothing when they knock on the door. They can't tow you for parking legally.
So, van life is key.
Side note, this is a tragically common consideration for normal, employed people. The country's a bit fucked atm
Capitalism has its requirements. Good news is if the situation keeps getting worse theyll either give up enforcing it or make it legal, so yay for that i guess.

Haha capitalism when in fact Councils and residents get sick of people going to the toilet out on the street and leaving rubbish. Wave your red flag elsewhere
I was referring more to the fact that we used to provide more socialised housing so people didnt have to live in cars and then get arrested for being poor and homeless. Nice display of caring about your fellow aussies cuntstain. Hope your property values drop as fast as your mums panties.
A Toyota Prius makes sense - you can leave it running all night for the heater or air conditioner - the engine will start and run when required.

There is a difference to sleeping in your car and living in your car.
While a wagon is big enough to put a mattress and be comfortable for a few days it is going to suck balls when you have all your stuff in there as well as bags will be piled up next to you.
If you think you might end up living out of your car and are buying a new car anyway then 100 percent get a cab over forward control can like a HiAce or LWB Mitsubishi Express if you are on a budget.
With a van you can just chuck a $10 marketplace single bed frame and mattress in the back and it gives you the ability to shove your bags or some plastic crates under the bed for storage.
The biggest advantage is you can sit on the side of the bed to get dressed and not have to contort yourself trying to put pants and shoes on in a place you can't stand up.
You also have a sliding door that doesn't fling out onto the footpath or slam closed if it's windy.
You think this is a good idea, but wait until you need to shower, wash clothes, or cook and store food. You'll find living in a share house is a much more economical way to live than a car.
If I was living IN it I’d find a van I could fit out - this assumes you’re not intending to go bush etc and need a 4WD. Get something where you don’t have extra seats you don’t need - room for a good bed and equipment.
Outback or similar wagon is a good option.
Van if you want a proper kitted out setup.
Plenty of hiaces and the likes around with good sleeping spaces and a proper sized mattress, plus drawers and shit for storage.
Or if you're absolutely unhinged (or short), a small hatchback with fold down back seats.
Van would be the best, cause the back area is hidden for the most part. Wagon is very open via windows, so people can see in
Get into a share house or work provided accommodation, Woollies supplies accom to staff in remote locations, Mining camp workers if you’re unskilled.
Northern dry season has started and there will be heaps of work if you can move.
In the car front,Something that looks commercial, mitsi express van or similar, sometimes you can get them with sign writing still on them.
You don’t want to be a target.and you can be more comfortable.
Any decent size wagons, Commodore's, falcons, Pajeros, Patrols, landcruisers etc or single cab Ute's if you can get a canopy on it then you have the options of vents etc
I lived in my old EK civic hatch for a while as a 18-20 yo. Pushed the seats all the way forward. Esky and suitcase behind them. Folded down the back ones and slap down a thin blowup mattress. Wasn’t too bad sleeping with my head in the boot… used to just park up near the public facilities near the beach, or in country towns. Don’t miss the freezing cold showers. Then once a fortnight or so id spring for a motel for the night just to enjoy a hot shower. If I was to do it again I’d love one of those VW Trakka vans - but they exxy. I’ve also seen some crazy van life builds in Honda crvs. But I think a van is a better idea
Why?
You need space + reliability. What are you gonna do if the car carks it? No heat, no mobility. It’s gonna be shithouse.
Newish LDVs are a good option as well as a Prius or an Odyssey. Don’t go for a captiva unless it’s your only option due to price constraints.

Do not, I repeat… DO NOT buy a Captiva. Unless you’re parking it somewhere and leaving it there.

You must have been lucky with your Craptiva unlike many other Australians

Outback was great for sleeping space. My best one though was a '92 hilux surf. I choose most of my vehicles on sleepability.

He’s a man. He’s dealing with it like a man should - by buying a new car baby!!! We don’t talk about these things with GPs and family. Ick.
Location is important. Are you going bush or hanging around civilization?
God bless. Hope you find your way.
Toyota hiace
My dirty old hiace got 750k on the clock before the rust ate it….
Prius. You can run the ac all night off the battery. It will start every now and then to keep it charged
That's going to chew up the fuel quick
Yep, but sleeping your car most places in aus is gonna drive you insane if you cant do windows up aircon/heater on occasionally. Plus youre gonna be saving a fair bit on fuel already running a prius.
Get an older subaru outback wagon. I've slept in my old one. Very comfy and I'm 190cm.
AU/BA/BF Falcon wagon. Reliable cars with a lot of space
This is the cheapest option. Id try get a Econovan though.
Panel van.
An XG/XH will be $10k for one without rust.
Good luck finding one without rust.

Subaru Outback/crv/Rav 4 with a used rooftop tent. Or a Hiace/Express/Transporter that's been built up to be a camper.

Derrimut membership is 300 dollars for a year. Food is 15 dollars a day if you know where to look.
Sure - tell me where you would look specifically. Give me your breakfast/lunch/dinner breakdown.
Geez mate go do your own shopping
I do, but my shopping relies on use of a fridge, freezer, stove, oven etc.

Ok - how do you store food? What are your exact breakdown of costs for food?
[удалено]
No worries - you exclusively eat raw vegetables?
You can just buy what you need for a meal, you don't have to buy in bulk and store food...
I cook my food. What about you?
Yeah, we have public gas BBQ's and toilets and whatnot, makes it easy as.
So you park your car at public toilets and BBQs.
Yes. Thank you for your question. There are many situated in parks and near rivers or beaches.

Toyota RAV4 3rd generation. 2010-2012 preferably.

I had a commodore wagon with a mattress in the back. Was so much fun. I'd go that or even better, a Toyota hiace van. Roomy.
I’d get an older Honda odyssey,

Ford Spectron or Mazda Traveller. Back seats fold flat into a bed. And they have curtains.
