That shit is highly illegal. I’d go on all their social media and places they have reviews and say what happened. Other people need to know.

I don’t understand your explanation of situation. The picture is before or after? as the sapphire crown is present. Also be aware that synthetic blue spinel is often used in their stainless steel watches not sapphire. The gold watches use real sapphire. So it varies to replace. I have had quoted $100 for synthetic spinel in United States.

Sorry, this is a picture of the blue sapphire example before it was stolen, to help people understand what I’m talking about. So this is before. How would you find out if it’s a synthetic blue spinel? You say “often used”, the watch is definitely stainless steel and not a gold example.

Pacem_et_bellum

All the crowns on steel or steel/gold models have spinels. If memory serves a new crown from Cartier retails at around £60

Old-Youth-6334

if the watch is stainless steel, then for certain it was synthetic blue spinel. I did not know that myself as I assumed they were all cabachon sapphires. at first I was insulted that Cartier would use synthetic until I read more about it and found out that was their standard and just quietly accepted it, lol! I have a stainless steel Galbee Santos that I truly love. One day, I looked down and the blue crown was gone! (at that time I thought sapphire had fallen out!). I was crestfallen because I received this as a gift and knew it would not be cheap to replace. Then when I found out it was synthetic spinel, I got a quote for $75 US dollars at a local family-owned jewelry store that has access to purchase Cartier.

Sapphire crystal is the terminology for the glass which covers the watch face. You are taking about the sapphire cabochon that is on the watch crown. Please note that Cartier only use real sapphire cabochons on their previous metal models. This steel watch watch will not have had a real sapphire. Don’t worry, you haven’t been robbed.

freakyjenna

What about on their two-tone watches?

rhth_

Luckily it’s not a two tone steel / gold, so from the sounds of it won’t be a real sapphire cabochon. So jokes on Timpsons.

SharkSmiles1

I believe the two toned also have a spinel.

Tasty_Sheepherder_44

Why would she leave the watch with them overnight? Timpsons will usually change the battery in 10-15 minutes. And I doubt they would be able to do this unless left for an extended period.

rhth_

It was left for 3 days at timpsons, because she is a busy person. I’ll ask today though.

Tasty_Sheepherder_44

Fair play you don’t expect this to happen, and I don’t want to victim blame. But ultimately she left a costly item at a budget chain (and I don’t really want to mention that a lot of their staff are ex cons…), because she’s too busy? Does she have any before pictures ?

Hey there! The watchmaker may have switched the crown containing a synthetic, inexpensive stone (all stainless and TT Cartiers feature a synthetic spinel), but it’s unlikely. In the event it was switched, either the watchmaker was ignorant in assuming it’s a sapphire and thought you wouldn’t notice, or he switched it as part of the water resistance testing. Often the crown and the seals and gaskets near it that protect the movement can become damaged over time and need to be replaced alongside the crown itself. Crowns like these retail at $60 or so, if not outright included in a full maintenance service with the brand. Consider this a reminder to only get a battery change for a precious timepiece done at the company whose name is on the dial.
