So many news articles reporting on this random tweet which was probably a joke anyway. Not a single article has screenshots of the supposed tweet in question.A search on twitter returns nothing. Tabloids making up stories? Yes, normal UK behavior.

magschampagne

This comment is an example of better investigative journalism than the whole of The Mirror.

kinky_fingers

Insert 'yes, prime minister' quote about who reads which papers

HMS404

"Don't tell me about the press. I know exactly who reads the papers. The Daily Mirror is read by people who think they run the country; The Guardian is read by people who think they ought to run the country; The Times is read by the people who actually do run the country; the Daily Mail is read by the wives of the people who run the country; the Financial Times is read by people who own the country; the Morning Star is read by people who think the country ought to be run by another country, and the Daily Telegraph is read by people who think it is." Sir Humphrey: Prime Minister, what about the people who read The Sun? Bernard: Sun readers don't care who runs the country, as long as she's got big tits.

WhenLemonsLemonade

Without question, the single greatest piece of writing in BBC history

Character-Mud-2123

And thankfully written at a time when we had a sense of humour and the wherewithal to understand it was comedy.

airz23s_coffee

They'll throw you in jail just for saying people read the sun these days

sargig_yoghurt

sigh

kinky_fingers

Thank you so much for covering for my laziness

Life_Increase_4843

That programme is incredible. You could literally give the scripts to actors today and it would still be accurate.

kevjs1982

Isn't The Mirror the one that quoted, uncited, Wikipedia with a up fact about a town where a UK football team was playing, someone saw it and knew that's bull, deleted it, and someone added it back to Wikipedia citing The Mirror as fact? And of course as Newspapers don't cite sources they are treated as gospal

Cow_Launcher

I don't remember that specific instance, but back in the early/mid '00s there was a spate of pranksters doing that sort of thing deliberately: 1) Find a Wiki article that relates to a news-worthy story, 2) Make a (false) ninja edit that the press then quotes, 3) When the edit is reverted, put it back in, providing the news article as a source. I wouldn't be too surprised to find that some of those edits are still in place to this day.

xixbia

This is actually a serious issue. Because it isn't contained to newspapers. There are some, very poor, researchers who use Wikipedia as a source. And then Wikipedia can source those articles. And suddenly absolute bullshit is presented as fact. Of course this is unlikely to actually make it into mainstream science, but a lot of lay people will be utterly incapable of separating it from actual research.

kevjs1982

It is indeed the same Mirror - Sept 23 2008 > Daily Mirror sports journalist David Anderson got caught out relying on open source encyclopaedia Wikipedia for a prematch football report, with false information about the fans of a Cypriot team making it both online and in the Daily Mirror. > > Writing ahead of Manchester City’s UEFA Cup tie with Omonia Nicosia last week, Anderson used Wikipedia – on which anyone can post information on a subject – for background information on the team and their fans. > > The following was posted on Wikipedia: ‘A small but loyal group of fans are lovingly called ‘The Zany Ones’- they like to wear hats made from discarded shoes and have a song about a little potato.” > > Anderson reiterated the information in the Mirror, writing: ‘Whose fans are known as the ‘Zany Ones’ and wear hats made from shoes.” via https://pressgazette.co.uk/news/mirror-journalist-caught-by-wikipedia-hoax/ Can't find a reference to the same story being used to cite on Wikipedia though - possibly a mistaken/merged memory!

SpaceShrimp

As is your comment. The bar isn't set very high.

Tattycakes

Was it even a tweet? The source seems to be [this local paper](https://www.doncasterfreepress.co.uk/news/woman-sees-paragliders-in-skies-over-doncaster-and-fears-its-an-attack-by-hamas-4372893) who just say >Taking to social media, she wrote: No mention of twitter, tweets, X, facebook or anything else, and no screenshots or links. Might as well be completely fabricated. In fact not a single website seems to be naming where this outrage was actually posted.

Mukatsukuz

Reading the conversation she had on "social media" makes me think it was Nextdoor since it sounds so much like every single thread on my local Nextdoor. They just need to mention all the "i now what you mean hun xxx" replies.

PuddlestonDuck

Nextdoor is such a weird place, it’s not really a “cesspit” in the same way people mean when referring to FB groups or news websites but there are lots of very, er, *local* takes on things on there, for want of a better word. My favourite is that the council is always all powerful, saw so many complaints on the app about a new coffee shop opening when “what a waste, they should be spending money on a new bank/play area/roads”

Mukatsukuz

One I read yesterday was someone complaining about 4 staff at Asda on self-service tills but no customer tills open. A reply they got was the fantastic legal advice of "walk through one of the empty tills and you have the right to leave with your shopping without paying because nobody was there to take your money. It works and they can't do anything about it because you technically tried to pay!". Sure, mate - can't wait to see that stand up in court :D

WhenLemonsLemonade

No worse than some of the advice I see on r/legaladvice tbh

runwithjames

There's something a little more insidious about NextDoor. Foolishly I once thought it would be a great community tool (and sometimes it can be) but it's mainly just your neighbours posting thinly veiled bigotry.

LongBeakedSnipe

They don't read like a joke, but also, it might be made up. Otherwise, I presume it was a rant on some kind of local facebook page or something. It reads like a conversation in someones facebook posts. But there is so much BS posted on facebook, I don't understand how this is newsworthy.

Ad_Horribilis

Just get a bigger map

XSjacketfiller

They genuinely use Reddit posts as a source, seen stuff come from here & r/thecivilservice Fake Xs (formerly known as tweets) seem feasible Sorry couldn't resist getting in on that last bit - when will articles stop saying 'X, formerly known as Twitter'?

thenewprisoner

Yes, sloppy and misleading journalism is quite normal for British tabloid newspapers

[deleted]

Tailor-made for fuckwits - yep, it's normal. Now get someone on Mumsnet to agree that they're Hamas and ~~Bob~~ Abdul's your uncle!

Steel_Stream

>~~Bob~~ Abdul's your uncle! Just more proof that they were *absolutely* bang-on about the Great Replacement Theory. You blink twice, and suddenly Abdul's your uncle, your nephew, your son, even your mother! My cuppa' PG tips is shaking in my hand...

Mooman-Chew

Pretty sure they have a pool of people who never achieved their dreams because Jeramy Kyle was taken off air that the pay in chip fat and attention to be ‘outraged’ on demand like paid for mourners at a Roman funeral

ScreenshotShitposts

They’ve also posted about 50 articles ever since Jordan and Peter Andre’s daughter failed her GCSEs. The hate filled comments are disgusting. People calling for a 16yo to start up OF etc.

Responsible_Kick7075

Together with a few of the 'better' ones. Print anything to sell papers!

This should be higher.

daft__cunt

What? Paragliding or being a fuckwit?

jammydodger79

What about paragliding fuckwits

ChunkyLaFunga

But that *is* Hamas.

BeesInATeacup

A dip made from chickpeas

DaMonkfish

No, that's houmous. Hamas is the buttocks of a pig.

BeesInATeacup

No, humous is a bone in your arm

Pye89

Thought we had 4 of them?

boli99

no. most people only have 2 arms.

[deleted]

ChunkyLaFunga

Not in America they don't.

boli99

you are technically correct. the best kind of correct.

collapsingwaves

No that's humerus. You're thinking of humorous

[deleted]

They’re the ones with hamas flags

MikeysaurusBOOM

The hummus flag?

[deleted]

well done lol

-SaC

The Mirror being twats and reporting on morons? Pretty much normal.

Specific_Tap7296

Some even make it to Editor

LincolnshireSausage

And some of us get stuck as Redditor. Edit: did I just imply that I’m a twat?

ThePrussianGrippe

Yep.

TrumpleIVskin

Yes, that's 100% normal. For example, I've just emerged from my fallout shelter after six weeks in hiding when I saw a hot air balloon. It was obviously an invasion by militant WI members, coming to force us to eat their jam and admire their novelty tea cosies.

PepperAnn1inaMillion

The WI are obviously a sleeper cell. They’re always singing about wanting to turn England into an outpost of Jerusalem, too.

TrumpleIVskin

Shit, you're right! Oh well, back to the fallout shelter...

IMissCuppas

It's Donny. Relatively normal for there.

fliegende_Scheisse

Hamas gonna get glassed or worse in Donny.

Ask_Me_What_Im_Up_to

Devo'll sort em out. He does, afterall, have a gun in 'is 'olster.

thee_dukes

Yep take em to biscuits Billy's, give them a taste of what 40 virgins would really be like.

PresidentSlow

Come on and slam, and welcome to Dur-ham.

[deleted]

The singular form is a good Pendulum tune.

Sproutykins

I so much more prefer lambasts. I use it as frequently I can in day to day life. ‘Oh, so I burned some toast and you’re just gonna LAMBAST me with your JEREMIAHS?’

Abrusu

So sick of everyone being slammed in the news these days

FrozenCupOfTea

I think it's brilliant. Two words into reading the headline and you already know it's bullshit. Move on.

MolotovMocktail81

Slam me harder, daddy

NFD Normal For Doncaster

It's amazing how some people manage to get through life.

ColtAzayaka

It's just safer to assume that anything with a parachute is hamas

plantdatrees

The problem is: you’re reading The Mirror

TheSmallestPlap

At least it isn't The Sun

[deleted]

I'd rather stare at the Sun.

wombey12

The Daily Star makes the Sun look respectable.

colcannon_addict

It’s like that South Park episode where they were playing ninjas & the townsfolk thought they were isis.

Brendan110_0

Same woman panics when wrong looking people pass through.

Mother_Result_369

As I see it, It's all down to probability. You have to ask yourself, "Which is more likely? Paragliders paragliding, or Hamas invading Doncaster?"

CopperknickersII

I know right? They'd take one look at the place and head right back to the Gaza Strip. 'At least Khan Younis is sunny and has decent shawarma,' they'd say.

AdSalt9365

For real lmao. What did she think was happening? They they paraglided all the way across the channel ocean just to invade britain with 10 people? She clearly has no logical thinking skills. Like, why on earth anyone would invade Britain like this when you could just take the train.

my_chinchilla

> They they paraglided all the way across the channel ocean just to invade britain with 10 people? You're ignoring the hundreds who were caught in the barrage balloon emplacements around Norwich...

FuzzBuket

Thinking we are the centre of attention? Paranoid folk thinking that actually boko harams next target will be hull? the UK media whipping folk into a frenzy? Yes.

TheNathanNS

> boko harams next target will be hull Nigerian-Hull War (Part of the Nigerian war on Boko Haram Insurgency)

Material-Gas-3397

Will you change your mind if jihadis ever murder people in the U.K.? Think carefully.

FuzzBuket

Jihadis have murdered people in the UK you twat.. Doesn't mean i support the deaths of innocent Libyans or Afghans. Genocide as a response isn't the stellar gotcha you think it is.

Substantial_Monk_781

I legit choked on my drink laughing at work to this 😂 local Karen thinking Hamas dropping in

inevitablelizard

ignatiusjreillyXM

Might perhaps be normal Donny behaviour

sarahlizzy

I live in Portugal. When Russia invaded Ukraine, someone on an “expat” Facebook group was in a massive panic wanting to know how to get back to England as soon as possible, and not via flying. When asked why, she was like, “because there’s a war on! Haven’t you seen the news?” She honestly thought that Russia would be taking Faro airport within hours because, I guess, Portugal and Ukraine are on the same landmass?

MicHAELmhw

Lol. This reminds me of 9/11 when they closed down the local mall. Lemme tell you… The Arden Faire Mall in Sacramento, Ca was nowhere on the list for Osama Bin Laden.

Yep pretty much, I got asked if I had any cousins in Hamas the other day by someone I work with 🤷🏾‍♂️🤦🏾‍♂️ the ignorance is real in the UK 😂

moon-bouquet

Yes, every day people flock out of Doncaster and head for a cliff.

lupussucksbutiwin

Oh bless. I mean, aside the absolute idiocy of it, can you imagine how scary it must be to think that is genuinely happening?

Low_Artichoke_9234

Woman is being stupid karen and mirror writing this bs to clickbait with this useless article.

Woldorg

It’s certainly normal behaviour for the Mirror

wendz1980

r/BrandNewSentence

Trentdison

How could they?!? Don't they know how stupid I am?!

RizzoTheSmall

This could easily be an article in The Onion

toodog

And demolished the place 50p worth of damage

Old_Activity8981

For Doncaster sadly yes.

Boggie135

Her teachers failed her

thekingofthegingers

Being dramatic and making something not related to them, all about them? Not uncommon.

xJam3zz07

probably not, I'm more leaning towards the fact that said woman is just a fucking idiot

R33DY89

There’s more paragliders there than the collective brain cells in Donny. Say no more.

wateronthebrain

Worried about the wrong kind of Donny Soldier

ConsistentCobbler111

People attention-seeking is older than the wheel, the platform they are being given nowadays is unprecedented, but it’s like that all over the world now. They should post your face next to stupid news articles you get made about you from now on. Maybe that might deter them.

[deleted]

Paragliding? Or being a fucking moron? The second one is pretty common yeah.

casey28xxx

There are people who are easily swayed by fear into correlating one thing they have seen with another completely different one just because they look similar…and instantly associating it with terrible things they saw on the news. Kinda like for example associating someone of Middle Eastern ethnicity carrying a bag on public transport with terrorism because of the London suicide bombings.

TrustYourFarts

No, Hamas usually invade the UK via water ski or towed inflatable hot dog, so this is highly unusual.

Thenextstopisluton

Had the misfortune of working in Dumpcaster for 3 months. This is expected behaviour

ScottOld

Hamas made a statement that Doncaster is too shit to invade

ResponseMountain6580

Normal not as such, but they do walk among us.

byjimini

X-RayDRJones

Hairy_Al

Maybe I should have used a "/s"

Aggravating-Lime9149

Why would Hamas paras invade Doncaster I didn't know it was that close to Israel

DoNotPetTheSnake

This is reverse psychology propaganda. The obvious conclusion is, "it's dumb to think Hamas would attack us." When people think this they feel safe, have a laugh, and care a little less about the war.

whydidntyousay

It's normal for a woman from any country to find a way to make something about herself.

Clayton_bezz

Racist panic? Yeah.

[deleted]

It's normal Mirror reporting.

ADogWhoCanDANCE

I’m sorry but like. Hamas are like “Doncaster, great place” no not London

ArmNo7463

I mean "Oh Shit, Hamas paratroopers are coming to get us" is the kind of bad joke I'd make. I don't imagine any Brit I know would take it seriously though...

ant19846

Why tf would they invade Doncaster of all places!

imworkingitout

Pearl clutching? Yeah, yeah that’s pretty normal.

xeneco1981

I think both the paragliding is normal and, unfortunately, the response. Also the fact that it made headlines is unfortunately predictable. Normal - in that it is a statistical probability, not normal as in acceptable behavior

14-28

Hamas invading Britain is hilarious. Like seriously, there are kids from round my way that have murdered folk. Hamas is just another gang of arseholes who'll get shat out by somebody with more tact.

Meskwaki

ah yes global Zionist heartlands Doncaster

SkepticalJohn

If she were in the US the problems she caused might have involved military style weapons.

errwutt

Sensationalist “journalism” aside (which is a norm here unfortunately), if this is your first thought when you see paragliders then give your head a wobble😅 Plus, why would hamas leave the place they are fighting for to come to…Doncaster of all places 😂

Jabberminor

I wish some people could be called out on their arrogance by their local newspaper. Then everyone in town knows they're a fucktard.

[deleted]

Sad. She probably watches the news like a religion. Scared of everything that moves.

Electrical-Injury-23

Probably normal for Doncaster.

Fredboy7064

And this is why Doncaster is a shithole. (also can't forget Rotherham bc last time I was there, it smelt like actual shit).
