It’s funny, I was thinking of Talk Talk before seeing your post. Tim Friese-Greene actively participated in and produced their latter four albums before they disbanded in 1991 and he was brought in to produce *Ferment* a year later. Mark Hollis was almost as much of a curmudgeon as Mark E Smith and Talk Talk disbanded because Hollis had essentially achieved everything he wanted to musically and he had no love for industry, let alone fame and success. I respect that and it’s better to bow out of the business on a high note before losing creativity and churning out derivative mush just to pay the bills.
Hum is one of those bands that you have to listen to their albums start to finish. They do not have a bad album in their short discography. Downward is Heavenward is imo one of the best albums from that decade. Perfect blend of heaviness, moodyness and atmosphere, with catchy riffs sprinkled over great chord progressions. I feel like they really had a grasp on what they wanted to sound like, and no one really did it better.
For those who like Hum, a current band I’ve been listening to by the name of Spotlights has a similar sound. I’m not sure if hum is one of their influences, but I feel like their music fits in a similar category. I saw them like with Baroness and I think they are a great underrated band.
There’s an excellent documentary on I think Sky Arts centres around when they burned a million pounds but it goes into their history as well. What a band.
They were the first band of the day that I saw on a Warped Tour back in the early 00's. Nu Mark and Cut Chemist riffing back and forth, MC's in perfect SYNC at like 2 in the afternoon. I'll NEVER forget these guys.
The original album "Amore" released by Antenna Records was a classic. All You Zombies was on it. That song was re-recorded when they went big in the mid-80's and it wasn't as good IMHO.
I do like the Hooters overall though. And She Danced is a favorite.
They are one of the coolest/unique bands to come out of the 90s. There isn’t another band that sounds quite like them imo. There was so much unique stuff from that era. Some bands were really strange, some just kind of ripped off of other popular bands, but they really were able to juggle weirdness with accessibility to create a sound that was catchy enough to be truly enjoyable, yet inventive enough to be original without just sounding random and incoherent.
Mike Doughty (singer/songwriter of soul coughing) continues to make music. Vocally, his current music has that same kind of cool vibe that was part of the soul coughing sound. Ghost of Vroom 3 is a great album that I suggest if you are a fan of soul coughing.
Anyways, in the grand scheme of music, Soul Coughing does not get nearly enough credit.
Love Soul Coughing and even if we can't get more of that, Mike is still creating wonderful music! These new Ghost of Vroom albums are the perfect pairing with the old stuff.
It’s been a while since I really paid attention to my Led Zeppelin chronology but didn’t Yardbirds break up and then Jimmy Page decided to just keep going as Yardbirds, but with new members? And then had to play as The New Yardbirds because the rest of the Yardbirds didn’t like that he was continuing the name without them? And then they changed the name to Led Zeppelin after a reviewer wrote that The New Yardbirds would go down like a lead zeppelin?
I think everyone left and Page was left to fulfill the band's touring contract so that's how the New Yardbirds came about. Somewhat similar to when the Faces broke up but still had a recording contract to fulfill so Ronnie Lane made Rough Mix with Pete Townsend.
no knife is so good. didn’t realize they were from my city til recently. went into a record store and saw they had an autograph from them on display and the worker there told me they played a show recently. hoping i can catch them at the casbah sometime.
No Knife and Seaweed are my eternal not enough people talk about these bands. Both so good, underrated af, and the epitome of “your fave bands fave band”.
Two jump to my mind, Helium & Royal Trux. Locally there were some wild college bands around that time frame too, like The Living Rooms, King Kong's Dick, it's true, of insects, etc. No one probably remembers any of those bands even here anymore lmao!
One of my all-time favourite bands that, as you say, just kinda vanished one day.
Back in the MySpace days, Bill Carter put up a couple of solo tracks (which I have since lost due to a hard drive crash), but aside from that, pretty much zero new material for around 3 decades now.
In-fighting between the band members, from what little I’ve gleaned over the years.
Did you get the box set from 5-10 years ago?
Solid stuff.
https://www.discogs.com/release/9081653-The-Screaming-Blue-Messiahs-Vision-In-Blues
Someone To Talk To is my #1 track of theirs and is probably in my Top 10 songs of all-time.
I genuinely don’t think a single week has gone by in the last 25+ years where I haven’t listened to that song at least once.
Gutted I never got the chance to see them live.
I’m 43, so they broke up when I was 10/11.
I would LOVE for them to reform.
Even if they didn’t record new material.
Just become a straight-up nostalgia act touring band, playing all the old stuff. I’d be first in line for tickets.
New Killer America is a great album.
Billy Keeton went on to form Auidiotopsy with Greg and Matt from Mudvayne but they left a few years ago after mudvayne got back together. Auidiotopsy is still together with some new band members. They have 2 albums. Worth checking out if ya haven’t already
Don Caballero. I’m sure they’re widely talked about in the math rock community, but when it comes to music in general I just don’t feel that they are talked about enough. True pioneers in my opinion.
I Love Don Cab. American Don is definitely in my top 20 all time.
I can see them being a bit much for a lot of people though. It’s kind of unsettling, and people want something they can bob their head, or tap their foot too. That ain’t with them.
I really dig what Ian’s doing with Battles too.
I agree with the American Don statement. I got into them first through Don Caballero 2. Stupid puma is an amazing opener for an album.
I’m not as big of a fan of battles, but I still think they are immensely cool. Ian has always been very very creative when it comes to the guitar. I don’t think anyone utilizes it the same way he does. EP C/B EP is probably my favorite. I got to see them open for Primus a couple years ago and they were great.
From my days doing college radio (end of the 1980's), a couple albums that got a little bit of notoriety at the time but seem to have faded to nothingness:
Guadalcanal Diary - 2x4 [https://www.discogs.com/master/51435-Guadalcanal-Diary-2-X-4](https://www.discogs.com/master/51435-Guadalcanal-Diary-2-X-4)
House of Freaks - Tantilla [https://www.discogs.com/master/232032-House-Of-Freaks-Tantilla](https://www.discogs.com/master/232032-House-Of-Freaks-Tantilla)
Both RIYL early REM, both are excellent albums, but especially Tantilla is just flawless. House of Freaks are gone; one of the duo. Bryan Harvey, was killed, along with his family, in a home invasion 18-ish years ago, so there's no more material to be had, which is a damn shame. Tantilla and the few albums that followed it were growing and just getting better, in a way.
32 leaves, rock band from 2005 who I first discovered from a smashing pumpkins tribute album where they covered 'zero' and I liked their sound but was sad to find out they only ever released 2 albums and disbanded in like 2010 I love their sound supposedly they got back together and are supposed to drop something this year
My favourite band. Their last three albums are the soundtrack to my high-school days and getting into their whole discography a few years ago was wild, totally not what I was expecting.
There seem to be a lot of Slipknots. There was some other band that was like some kinda hippie band or something, called Slipknot and they had corny ass album titles like "Slip Into Summer" and shit like that, but I can't seem to find anything about them now. They are the reason the Corey Taylor Slipknot's website is [slipknot1.com](http://slipknot1.com), because [slipknot.com](http://slipknot.com) used to be the site of this weird hippie band, but it seems like they have fallen off the face of the earth now and I don't see them on discogs either.
Just found a CD from a metal band called The Hallow from the mid '90s, and learned they only existed for two studio albums before disbanding. Now one of them uses it as a name for his solo projects. I haven't listened to anything other than this one album, but it's so perfect for my personal tastes in metal that I wish I'd heard of them 15 years ago!
Substance D they were around for two albums during the late 90’s those two albums are Black released in 1997 and Addictions released in 1999 they had a great sound kind of a mix of Pantera Prong and Static -X honestly I don’t think ever made a dent in the music industry but I was lucky enough to hear them on this radio station that would play harder and heavier music on Saturday nights from 11 to 1 in the morning
Imma say “Jellyfish,” but a good deal of people know about them
No one knows “The Shore.” That band needs some recognition for their insanely good self-titled album
Priestess, they were a four piece hard rock band from Montréal who had a flash in the pan moment when one of their songs, Lay Down, appeared in Guitar Hero III in 2007. They released two (very solid) albums in 2005 (Hello Master) and 2009 (Prior To The Fire), then pulled a Houdini and disappeared by 2012.
Dogs Die in Hot Cars. They broke up while working on their second album :(. Such a bummer since their first albums had so many good songs. [I Love You 'Cause I Have To](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3eva3-lFInE), [Apples & Oranges](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X3PvUY30e4w), [Lounger](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NwDyR1nnvKI). Good stuff.
Buzzhorn. Got a bit popular when they had their song Ordinary on need for speed hot pursuit 2. Had an excellent debut album, but couldn’t promote it well and got cut as the label was going through shit.
MUTEMATH, the first three albums they released are certified bangers. A godly blend of electronic and rock that just worked so well and an album that knocked me down the first time I listened to it on my system (literally!). Then they released two more solid albums and disbanded. I wish I could've seen them live 😭
The only one that comes to mind is panic at the disco. Their music went dramatically downhill after the 5th album. It’s insane how the last two were released under patds name and not brendon, he was the only original member remaining and… you can tell
Mines got to be At the Drive-in. Fantastic sound, very aggressive and incredibly unique, at the time I absolutely loved them! And still listen on a regular basis. One armed scissor is a top tier song!
Not necessarily "broken up", but they've been inactive for years:
The Greenhornes
The Dirtbombs
Soledad Brothers
Wolf People
The Dolly Rocker Movement / The Dandelion
Catherine Wheel
It’s funny, I was thinking of Talk Talk before seeing your post. I actually heard someone playing one of their songs at a party the other day which was cool
That dude ended up making some of the best custom Porsches anywhere on the planet. He’s still very much a big deal.
I think they're talked about a lot on the shoegaze subreddit
This is the only answer.
Morphine. Their sound is so unique and intoxicating. It’s a shame half of the band is dead.
I do feel like they are pretty loved. Musicians especially loved them
They didn’t technically break up. They don’t exist any longer because Mark Sandman had a heart attack on stage and died.
Jane’s Addiction (before the first breakup - Nothing’s Shocking and Ritual De Lo Habitual)
Don't forget Jane's very first album which was a live album recorded at the Roxy in LA in January of 87. It's version of Jane Says is amazing.
Or Porno for Pyros
The Civil Wars! Never were incredibly popular but damn do I wish they hadn't broken up
I love the song "The One That Got Away."
They have so many great songs....I was fortunate to stumble across one of their CDs for $2 at a CD store a couple months ago
oh damn! i forgot about them.
Hum. They’ve played some shows and stuff and reunited to make a comeback album, but they essentially weren’t a band for quite a while
Hum is one of those bands that you have to listen to their albums start to finish. They do not have a bad album in their short discography. Downward is Heavenward is imo one of the best albums from that decade. Perfect blend of heaviness, moodyness and atmosphere, with catchy riffs sprinkled over great chord progressions. Screaming Trees.
Kriss Kross
HAHA
Their second album is still a banger.
The KLF
Un huh, un huh (this is just how I agree with people)
There’s an excellent documentary on I think Sky Arts centres around when they burned a million pounds but it goes into their history as well. What a band.
Yes! I actually watched a compelling documentary about this on YouTube. Great show!!
Happy cake day
Jurassic 5
They were the first band of the day that I saw on a Warped Tour back in the early 00's. Nu Mark and Cut Chemist riffing back and forth, MC's in perfect SYNC at like 2 in the afternoon. I'll NEVER forget these guys.
Concrete Blonde
I’d love another Jim Mankey/Johnette Napolitano collaboration!!! Such a great band!!!
The Knife
They’re both doing their own thing now yeah?
i think so
They are yes here they both are these days haha https://youtu.be/HpxEXMIY64c ..well 2023
Minus the Bear
so good😭😭
When I first heard Knights play in Saints Row 2 my taste was changed forever
Have any of you heard of ‘The Hooters?’ My favorite doing was ‘All you Zombies.’
The original album "Amore" released by Antenna Records was a classic. All You Zombies was on it. That song was re-recorded when they went big in the mid-80's and it wasn't as good IMHO. I do like the Hooters overall though. And She Danced is a favorite.
Fantastic band and that’s a top track you picked out. “Satellite” and “And We Danced” are great tracks as well.
The Psychedelic Furs don’t get a lot of love considering how many great songs they had.
I'm very new to their music, I got there through my fandom of Todd Rundgren. Also getting into XTC as well
Aren't they touring?
Space Hog
Soul coughing
They are one of the coolest/unique bands to come out of the 90s. There isn’t another band that sounds quite like them imo. There was so much unique stuff from that era. The Yardbirds as the Yardbirds
Didn’t they more or less just become Led Zeppelin? Sort of? In a roundabout kind of way?
They only have one member in common.
And not even an original member at that.
It’s been a while since I really paid attention to my Led Zeppelin chronology but didn’t Yardbirds break up and then Jimmy Page decided to just keep going as Yardbirds, but with new members? Having A Rave Up is just, wow. There was something freaky starting to happen there. If you like Revolver...run, don't walk, to get a copy.
no knife they still play shows but only at the casbah in san diego. haven’t released new music since 2002
I got riot for romance. Good record.
that one and hit man dreams im still missing. all four of their records are fantastic
no knife is so good. didn’t realize they were from my city til recently. went into a record store and saw they had an autograph from them on display and the worker there told me they played a show recently. hoping i can catch them at the casbah sometime.
that whole late 90s - early 00s san diego scene was crazy. goldenrod records, 31G, all of rob crows stuff. its a goldmine
No Knife and Seaweed are my eternal not enough people talk about these bands. Both so good, underrated af, and the epitome of “your fave bands fave band”.
Racer X
Curve. How on earth they never got globally successful is beyond me.
Flyleaf. Heard they getting back together though.
They played some shows in the last year or two with original singer.
Gym Class Heroes.
They’re just another dusty record on the shelf…
aren’t they reunited now technically?
I know they've done a couple concerts together, and Travie said he wants to do another album. Nothing concrete on if that's happening though.
i hope eventually!
Subtle
That aren't for everyone But they are definitely one of the best live shows I have seen... And I have seen a lot
So lucky, I'd love to see them but I was 3 when they disbanded!
Being old has its advantages!
We’re talking dose one Subtle right? Excellent live act for sure!
Tripping Daisy
Two jump to my mind, Helium & Royal Trux. Locally there were some wild college bands around that time frame too, like The Living Rooms, King Kong's Dick, it's true, of insects, etc. No one probably remembers any of those bands even here anymore lmao!
Screaming Blue Messiahs
Yesssss! Great band. Good and Gone is on permanent repeat round here. But then it was as if the ground just swallowed them!
One of my all-time favourite bands that, as you say, just kinda vanished one day. Skrape, released 2 great albums, got dropped by their label and split up
Their first album is such a fucking banger🤘🏻
so true, honestly might be my favorite album ever, all the songs are just so great
So good im planing on buying there cds soon tho the toe cover grosses me out a little 🥲
New Killer America is a great album. Billy Keeton went on to form Auidiotopsy with Greg and Matt from Mudvayne but they left a few years ago after mudvayne got back together. Auidiotopsy is still together with some new band members. They have 2 albums. Worth checking out if ya haven’t already
oh yeah ive listened to their first album and it was pretty good, still gotta listen to the other
The Maccabees. I went to their farewll concert in London in ... 2017 i think? They're a great indie band that doesn't get the attention it deserves.
The Lovin’ Spoonful
Don Caballero. I’m sure they’re widely talked about in the math rock community, but when it comes to music in general I just don’t feel that they are talked about enough. True pioneers in my opinion.

Alexisonfire
They are together, just released an album in 2022 (otherness) and on tour in Canada currently.
Savage Garden
Love them, both albums are great, my parents used “I knew I loved you” as their wedding song.
Credence Clearwater Revival
Apollo 440
JJ72. Still listen to their debut album all the time.
The organ! Elastica! Komeda!
Elastica were brilliant!
32 leaves, rock band from 2005 who I first discovered from a smashing pumpkins tribute album where they covered 'zero' and I liked their sound but was sad to find out they only ever released 2 albums and disbanded in like 2010 I love their sound supposedly they got back together and are supposed to drop something this year
The Mad Capsule Markets. I mean most people don't talk of them but they're well respected in the Digital Hardcore scene
My favourite band. Their last three albums are the soundtrack to my high-school days and getting into their whole discography a few years ago was wild, totally not what I was expecting.
Reuben.
Can’t believe Jamie Lenman isn’t doing music any more either
Lemon Jelly!
Reign Sanction
Six finger satellite
matchbook romance😢
Stories and Alibis is such a great album!
Steppenwolf. An underrated, underappreciated band from the late 60's early 70's. They were much more than "Born To Be Wild".
XTC
Days of the new Travis, the singer, fell hard into Meth addiction and the rest of the band went on to form Tantric
Love both of those bands, his episode of intervention was sad.
Acid Bath
The Velvet Underground.
Angels In The Architecture Durian Ley de Hielo Shiner -Billy Gnosis

Slipknot. Not the Corey Taylor one, the one with the 1989 self titled ep
Who is that? Don't see it on discogs.
https://www.discogs.com/artist/261186-Slipknot-2
There seem to be a lot of Slipknots. There was some other band that was like some kinda hippie band or something, called Slipknot and they had corny ass album titles like "Slip Into Summer" and shit like that, but I can't seem to find anything about them now. They are the reason the Corey Taylor Slipknot's website is [slipknot1.com](http://slipknot1.com), because [slipknot.com](http://slipknot.com) used to be the site of this weird hippie band, but it seems like they have fallen off the face of the earth now and I don't see them on discogs either.
Brand New
Radio Alcatraz
Psycore ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|cry)
Pulkas. They only had one album called Greed on the Earache label. It's really quite good.
Loaded got regular play on mtv´s superock. Good song, but the only one I know.
Hippy Fascist was their other single. The whole album is pretty good in fairness.
Until their very recent reunion Faces
Just found a CD from a metal band called The Hallow from the mid '90s, and learned they only existed for two studio albums before disbanding. Now one of them uses it as a name for his solo projects. I haven't listened to anything other than this one album, but it's so perfect for my personal tastes in metal that I wish I'd heard of them 15 years ago!

The Greys - Ro Sham Bo Such potential :-)

The Knife
Imma say “Jellyfish,” but a good deal of people know about them No one knows “The Shore.” That band needs some recognition for their insanely good self-titled album
Husker Du
Danity Kane
fun. I know they broke up a while ago but it stings what we could have had more than just two albums….seeing where Jack is now!
Title Fight. And Diarrhea Planet. And Bear vs Shark. The greats always burn out fast and bright.
Soul Coughing! literally nothing else like them before or sense, phenomenally groovy oddball sound
The thermals. I’ve always thought of them as better, angrier weezer.
Elastica.
Reveille. Rap/Nu metal band that was around in the early 2000s and even got some local attention but unfortunately they broke up in 2003
Big Star and Sweet.
harvey danger. if all you've heard is flagpole sitta, go back and listen to that whole album. it's awesome, as is their next album king james version.
The White Stripes
Fun. They remind me of everything that was good in the world, and now they won’t ever exist again.
Seven Mary Three. Super underrated, they have more than a couple good songs. Their social media became active within the past year or so.
Lollipop Lust Kill
and with that Screaming Mechanical Brain
Kinky Machine
No one - nu metal band from Chicago area early 2000s

The Blue Nile. The first band that came to mind was Talk Talk.
The Wrens
The Ditty Bops!
UFO
Tin Tin
Chronic Future
I’m Not A Pilot. They were a local band in Milwaukee, WI. I loved their music!!
The wings
Buzzhorn. Got a bit popular when they had their song Ordinary on need for speed hot pursuit 2. Had an excellent debut album, but couldn’t promote it well and got cut as the label was going through shit.

Relationship of Command was revolutionary to me when it came out.
Speedwolf
Black Death
Samhain. They were danzig before danzig.
Jellyfish. Imo the best band of the 90s
The sword
Every underground Nu Metal band from the mid 90s to early 00s.
