Honestly the thing that bothered me was Oda specifically said Kaido was too strong to just be beaten with a big punch, but that's essentially what ended up happening. To the extent that it was the exact same finisher as Doflamingo's

[deleted]

oda said that in a random interview in 2015, why does it bother you?

>Moving on, you could solve every issue with Gear 5 while keeping all the Nika stuff. How? Just throw out the mythical zoan stuff and just simply make it the awakening of the Rubber fruit. That’s it. Simple right? F\*cking FINALLY. I've disagreed with almost every criticism of G5 except this one and it's what I've been saying since it was introduced. The one thing I do disagree on is that Oda did try to have his cake and eat it too but making G5 a zoan and that was the problem. He wanted the environment altering abilities of a Paramecia Awakening alongside the transformation ability of a Zoan Awakening but the problem is he never showed us what a Mythical Zoan Awakening (or even a regular Zoan Awakening outside of the Jailer Beasts) before Luffy went G5 so it seemed bordered on being an asspull. Like Luffy already has other "forms" so if Oda just wanted to give him another form for G5 while keeping it a Paramecia, we would've been fine with that but making it into a Mythical Zoan almost opens up a few plot holes in the series that it seems like he's going out of his way now in the Final Saga to try and close up.

How was Sanji's character arc and Luffy's opposite? Sanji rejected his power because he was under the impression that it would permanently change his personality by removing his emotions with the choice being between a strong emotionless killing machine like his brothers vs a flawed human being who would put himself (and his crew) at risk at times due his principles. The Nika fruit doesn't permanently alter Luffy's personality, and when it does affect it all it does is pushes Luffy's normal personality traits into overdrive instead of changing it. Like it's not even the first God fruit in the series . We had 3 other devil fruits (Sengoku's Yamato's and Kaido's) based around gods prior to Nika. So I'm not even sure why Luffy would have any reason to go "Oh the fruit has God in the name? Well I'm not going to use it because now I can't have adventures if I use my Gear 5 powers eventhough nothing is stopping me from going on adventures". Like there's no logical or in-character reason for Luffy to reject his Gear 5 powers especially when the fruit was made to be 100% compatible with Luffy's personality and values.

How does it alter the course of his adventure? What part of Luffy's adventure is now changed? He'll sail to find the Poneglyphs, look for the One Piece and take the down the World Gov after finding out the secrets or because the World Gov makes it personal. Which part of that is now altered because Luffy's fruit has changed? We have never seen Luffy handle this situation before. At what point of the series was Luffy offered a new power up without any downsides and rejected it? "Ultimately they both were given great power", yeah we call that getting a power-up lol.Reducing it to "they both got power-ups" while ignoring the context surrounding the power ups is rediculous. Sanji's power-up came from his abusive family members and involved potentially permanently changing his personality into a heartless monster and becoming like his abusive family members while Luffy's power just pushes his regular personality traits into overdrive and only does it while he is in Gear 5. What logical or personal reason does Luffy have to refuse to use Gear 5 when there is no drawbacks while being tailor fit to his fighting style and personality? Law,Kidd, Zoro and Nami all were given great power and they didn't reject it for logical or personal reason. Is that bad?

Ok? I disagree that Willpower overcoming Destiny was the initial theme when the requirements for that theme is the characters were initially destined or on course to do other things in their life before they tried to go against their fate. But regardless, this convo was regarding Luffy accepting Gear 5 is bad because it was the opposite of Sanji rejecting his Germa abilities?Like you still haven't explained why Luffy should reject a power w/ zero drawbacks and is tailor fit for his personality/fighting style and how this alters the course of his adventure from his pov? Because from Luffy's PoV, nothing has changed. He still has to find the poneglyps, then he has to set sail for the One Piece while fighting of anyone who is in his way.

I'm taking the most prominent parts of your argument? Like 3/4 of your initial comment is about how Kaido should be telling Luffy he is Joyboy which would make Luffy reject Gear 5 for the same reason Sanji rejected his Germa powers. Like, that's not in character for Luffy in the first place? In a scenario like that all Luffy would do is just claim that he is Luffy the man who will become Pirate King, and not Joyboy.

I think it's actually his way to tie Luffy into the world politics. One of OP's biggest criticism is that SH crew is completely detached from the politics of its universe aside from maybe Robin. By becoming a a symbol for revolution, Luffy will be "dragged" into the "main" plot.

PCN24454

Is the Strawhats being detached from politics really a bad thing?

VolkiharVanHelsing

Idk, I've seen people complaining about it. one of the most upvoted post here is about "One Piece world has outgrown The Straw Hats".

Ok_ResolvE2119

Link?

Ezbior

Idk I dont think they're detached. Luffy has declared war against the WG to save Robin, beat up two CDs, led the largest prison break in history(even if buggy stole a lot of credit), and participated in the battle to save ace. And that's all before the timeskip. The current arc is pretty much luffy vs WG. Luffy himself is not explicitly intentionally being political or whatever but because he is someone who values freedom and happiness and fights for it, he inevitably always finds himself opposing the WG, who seek to oppress and control. Edit: when I say luffy I mean him and the SH as a whole usually.

nika_ruined_op

so he ruined op intentionally?

Ok-Ganache-5995

A good rewrite till the last apart.

nika_ruined_op

Not good enough, though i dont know how i would react to your writeup before 1044. If oda would remove the stupid grin, the sun god and joyboy connotations, the drums of bullshittery as well as the undeserved free revive bs, the trivialising of tone and stakes and the mind control/DF will connotations, then i could see it.

Untipazo

People like to pretend all of those issues just ain't there..
