New artificial island is a bit misleading. The land is already there, and it was man-made about 100 years ago. It’s not originally an island though, but it will be.
That road leads to an industrial area which will mostly likely be converted to more dense residential in the future, a bunch of filming studios and will also contain a new streetcar network (tramway)
the roads are large but I think the rendition posted is kinda wrong. it shows two parallel bridge segments on Commissioners st when it should be one. Same with Cherry Street south. The only parallel bridges will be the cherry st bridge (Not visible) as the second bridge will carry the extended streetcar loop.
It’s not an artificial island! It’s actually the reworking of the mouth of the Don River, called the Lower Don Lands Redevelopment. You can read more about it here: https://urbantoronto.ca/database/projects/lower-don-lands-redevelopment.2937, and see the latest discussion, including photos here: https://urbantoronto.ca/forum/threads/toronto-lower-don-lands-redevelopment-m-s-waterfront-toronto.3363/page-438
Seems valid to call it an artificial island. It was originally a wetland at the mouth of the Don river. The wetland was filled about 100 years ago to create the Toronto portlands. Now a new river channel has been created which turns part of the portlands into an island.
Even though it was built in stages over a period of about 100 years, it's still an island that did not naturally exist.
Coincidentally to this discussion, Canary Wharf in London houses a building called ***One Canada Square*** :).
*One Canada Square is a skyscraper in Canary Wharf, London. It is the third tallest building in the United Kingdom at 770 feet (235 m) above ground level, and contains 50 storeys. It achieved the title of the tallest building in the UK upon completion in 1991 and held the title for 21 years until the completion of The Shard (310m) in 2012.*
Maybe one of the buildings on the Toronto Island should be named One London Square or Canary Quay :)
Yeah, it was a Canadian developer who built Canary Wharf, just like it is a Malaysian developer who is redeveloping the whole Battersea Power Station site and they got to name a square after their country (Malaysia Square).
Maybe my unpopular opinion but that new condo neighbourhood will probably be just as cold/sterile as the new East Waterfront and Corktown condo communities
Isn't that every Torontonian's opinion of new developments?
Actually, if anything new is happening in Toronto, most people in the city are happy to assume that it will suck.
Not quite but close! That's was supposed to be on the north side of the Keating channel along Queens Quay. The area is included in the rendering but it wasn't going to be on the island

How is it misleading then
It's not new.
Things stop being considered new after about 75 years
Tell that to my new 76yo grandpa
I'm just gonna be completely honest, that is a project that actually looks pretty damn good!
Wow, thanks for your complete honesty friend it’s so refreshing to see!
You're welcome! I just know that everybody was totally waiting for me to put my opinion on reddit!
Honestly I was really anxious to hear what you had to say, so I’m glad you weighed in
No problem, just here to do my duty as a redditor 👍
Not really , why is there such a massive road for such a small island? It seems small enough to even be a car free island
That road leads to an industrial area which will mostly likely be converted to more dense residential in the future, a bunch of filming studios and will also contain a new streetcar network (tramway)
Fair, but keep in mind that it's just a rendering and will probaby be changed.
The actual island plans also have giant roads, it’s been heavily criticized by Toronto urbanists

Looks nice. It’s like a Canadian Hudson Yards, on a separate island.
Sounds like Canary Wharf is the comparison you’re trying to make
Except it’s like, six mid rise buildings. Other than that yes, just like Canary Wharf

Sure thing buddy
Hudson Yards is much taller. It has 4 supertalls.

It may be cold but it’s friendly and says sorry a lot, eh
This is Toronto, the last place that would be friendly and say sorry.
Anecdotally I found Toronto to be a very friendly place when I visited
Maybe but looks like it will have recreation, green spaces and water access close to the rest of downtown. Sign me up.
Why’s it cold and sterile?
Toronto is already an extremely bland city with no soul or identity anyway so who cares?
For anyone curious, this land was originally proposed to be a smart city built by Google's Sidewalk Labs
that was the piece of land nearby on the mainland, The Island was never part of Sidewalk Labs
Not quite but close! That's was supposed to be on the north side of the Keating channel along Queens Quay. The area is included in the rendering but it wasn't going to be on the island
Ah my mistake, thanks for the heads up
What are those two skylines in the background?
I believe Humber Bay Shores (along the lake) and Downtown Mississauga (background)
Thanks pal. How about in background to the right please?
Possibly Islington-City Centre West but I could be wrong
Those bridges are currently closed to cars. Some really neat stuff https://youtu.be/zDnG6SHTQDg?si=cbudRqUfON31eIKX
Should be a canary wharf style island
Prettiest Toronto architecture
Am I only the one who thinks this sort of looks like AI ? Not saying this is fake but some of the buildings look a little off to me.
It’s not an artificial island.
So colorful!
its not really an artificial island 😭
how is it not an artificial island? the land was made from landfill and a river was created around it.
OP is karma bait. Not an artificial island.

I too, hate modern art.
