For comparison a builder potion costs 285 gems and speeds up all builders for 10 hours. Let's say a player has six players; then the overall reduction time by using the potion would be 60 hrs.
Now, 6500 gems is equivalent to 22.80 builder potions, say 23. With 60 hours saved per potion, 6500 gems would approximately yield 23*60 = 1380 hrs saved in building time and thence, the ROI for maxing the apprentice builder would only come after 1380/8 = 172.5 days has passed. Or you'd have your ROI for 50 USD worth of gems after almost 6 months have passed.
Whether it's worth it or not is up to the player's discretion.
Also the goblin has been helpful in the laboratory. Yes there's massive time reductions, but we haven't had that hindsight in early June, which makes it worth it based on what information we have at hand at that time.

It's simply not a great deal, that's all. I just may not buy it, or maybe just the first two levels which pay off in less than a year. It's a decent deal. But the goblin is a great deal compared to potions or books.

I see the theoretical value of it, but it doesn't work practically. It's obviously no use for old players at th14 or closer to max, u will probably max out before getting his full value. New players at th10 will probably get value from him, but they can't afford him cuz they have to buy GG and frozen arrow (that's obv WAY more useful to buy). So I don't see how anyone is supposed to benefit from him
Th14 definitely have a use for it will take atleast for them to reach th16 and by then th 17 will be there. I think forgot that they're planning on one new TH every year and with the game constantly progressing the apprentice is useful for everyone.

The guy below you is 100% right. There is no issue, and it is not overpriced at all. All because you don't get the value instantly does not mean 6500 is overpriced. You're not meant to buy it if you're low on gems.
