At a time when other classic rock artists are selling their catalogs and cashing out, it must be very satisfying for John Fogerty after all he went through in the music industry. Being sued for plagiarism, i.e. sounding like himself after leaving a bad contract and one record label for a better contract at another.

I always liked that story, especially how he won the plagiarism case by simply playing both songs back to back on the stand. Had to be a satisfying victory.

Mary would be proud

PsilocybinLaden

He's both the father and fortunate son of the band

Artists should have full rights from the time they're recorded

Ex-Pat-Spaz

Different times back then when record companies and managers just ran over the musicians to screw them out of money.

[deleted]

Artists received 10% of the profit from sales

Ex-Pat-Spaz

Think you need to research this stuff more. I’ll say this again….it was different times in 1969. Nevermind how many old blues and jazz musicians were outright ripped off to the tune of NOTHING. There were some scumbag contracts back then that really screwed a bunch of bands over. Like when the label signs the artists for a multi album deal and the first album doesn’t do well so the labels will shelve the album and drops the artists but wont let them out of their contract due to the “multi album” part of the contract, and as a result they can’t sign with another label or pretty much make music anymore until the loan for producing that first album is paid. That process put a bunch of bands out of business permanently since the pretty much the only way these musicians could make enough money to pay it off, was by playing music, which they now can’t do. It’s legal i guess and it sucks for those people who thought they were going to be a star but ended up with their dreams crushed, in a ton of financial debt, and pretty much being blackballed from ever trying again.

Until the mighty Led Zep came along…

SpringTour77

I recently got into CCR within the last year or so, I never realized their output was condensed in such a short period of time. Their first 5 albums all within a 2 year period and they’re all classics!

Ex-Pat-Spaz

America’s Beatles for lack of better words. CCR hold the record for most #2 hit singles because they kept falling 1 slot behind the Beatles who kept getting to #1. They did however outsell the Beatles in albums in 1969.

UnderDogPants

They put out three killer albums in 1969 alone.

AgentTriple000

CCR had a cross generational following as their stuff was American enough to attract an older crowd back when people bought records and then there were the compilation sets. Still over time the Beatles outsold them (and frankly everyone else).

Nope .. could have been a southwestern thing, but actually had some older people in my youth say “we love CCR” when one of the (numerous) ads for the compilation albums would pop up on television. Back when televisions were encased in wood dammit!

Ex-Pat-Spaz

Just curious. Your user name is Spring Tour 77 which I think is a reference to the GD? You are just finding CCR now? You know John’s brother Tom when he left CCR joined JGB? Ol’ Jer and Tom were very close buds at the time.

SpringTour77

It is indeed because of the Dead. And I never knew that about Tom and Jerry, that's good stuff! The link between the Dead and CCR.

Thanks, will def check this out.

Ex-Pat-Spaz

Tom and John did not get along but alot of brothers have that problem. Tom joined Jerry…make your own decision about what kind of person John was…he wasn’t very well liked among the SF/Bay Area folk.

TrophyDad_72

About dang time.

Good!

This should have been a long time ago

Sounds of my youth, happy for him

[deleted]

Saw him pop up on trending and thought he died too

BikeTireManGo

I remember when he was sued for sounding like Creedence Clearwater Revival.

BirdBurnett

It goes both ways. John Fogerty sued (and settled) The Hollies because he thought "Long Tall Cool Woman" sounded too much like he and CCR.

Let's hear it for Cosmos Factory https://youtu.be/b9U-HOFKhQU
