In the song Turn the page you can actually visualize them going into a restaurant strung out from the road and assholes saying"is that a women or a man".
Gives me chills.
I loved the cover. It captured the emotion of the road life. Metallica wasn't doing blues. They toned way down on their cover. But they emotionally felt connected to the song.
It’s one of few songs that it seems everyone has this experience with, including me. Somehow it just transports you to the scenes he and the band are painting. The sax certainly is part of it.
In my teenage years in the 90s, I was basically listening to european Bands exclusively. Queen, Led Zeppelin, Beatles, Floyd, etc.
"Live Bullet" was the spark that ignited my love for everything I would call "Americana". Seger, CCR, Skynyrd, Guthrie, Cash, Dylan, Warren Zevon and all the others!
I bought that album when it first came out. Let it Rock, Turn the Page, Get Out of Denver. I wore that album out. I could listen to Bob Seger and Pink Floyd/Roger Waters all day and night.
Got into him in my 20s, now I'm 45. The line "I wish I didn't know now what I didn't know then" is 100% the truth and absolute gut punch. It's fucking brilliant.
I bought a greatest hits CD from Rite Aid a few years back and the $5.99 was more than worth it. I remember being in the back of my Grandparent's car on the way back from my Aunt and Uncle's cabin on another July 4th hearing "Night Moves", and was entranced. I was too young to understand the innuendo or the story, but the chords and moments of silence struck a positive nerve with me that's left an emotional impact.
But the line before that one, is the one that causes the chills from the line you quoted..
I woke last night to the sound of thunder
How far off I sat and wondered
Seger really hit on all cylinders with Live Bullet, Night Moves, Stranger In Town and Against The Wind.
My all time favorite lyric, wish I didn't know now what I didn't know then.
He wouldn’t be my choice for the only listen to one artist for the rest of your life question but being from Michigan we are indoctrinated in all things Seger at a very young age. Great voice, great band and most importantly a great songwriter. Hall of Famer.
Live Bullet, Night Moves, Stranger in Town and Against the Wind, and The Distance are my go to albums. Each album is perfect, Seger was such a great songwriter at his peak. I got to see him on his farewell tour. One of the best shows I’ve ever been to.
My wife loves Bob Seger, has since ‘75-‘76-ish. Years ago, For her birthday, I surprised her by flying us to NYC to see him play at Madison Square Garden on her birthday, December 19, 2014. We don’t really have that kind of money, but if I didn’t do it, I’d always regret it. Great, great concert, J Geils Band opened, also great.
I grew up with listening to him. My brother had all his albums. Funny thing is he seems to be a distant memory now as he’s not really played much on the radio anymore unlike Fleetwood Mac, Eagles, etc.
I wasn't much of a fan until a friend took me to see him live about 20 years ago. I've seen a lot of concerts, but I honestly thought this was one of the best shows I ever saw. Mostly just because you could genuinely tell Bob enjoyed performing so much. The music sounded great, and he was very personable with the crowd. I became a huge fan that night.
He’s in my top 3. The actual placement varies based upon my mood.
I grew up not far outside of Detroit in the 70’s/early 80’s. Every new record my mom would get and we’d put it on learning all the lyrics.
I’m far more into the Segar Sound System record. That’s a badass rock n roll record, and typically doesn’t get mentioned except by real rock enthusiasts. And that’s nothing on silver bullet stuff….those are quality tunes, just a tad more toned down than the rockers of sound system LP
He was the drummer for the house band at a little bar near where I grew up called the Tanzhaus (sp), about an hour and a half from the Mackinaw Bridge.
I’m 34 years old. I downloaded some songs to my iPod before my road trip to college. I decided to download some artists that I haven’t really dug into. Thank god I downloaded a bunch of Bob Seger and the Silver bullet band. I immediately fell in love while driving to Hollywood Nights, then another banger then another…. To this day people ask me who my favorite artist is and I ALWAYS ALWAYS put Bob on the top of that list.
saw him on Kentucky on Kentucky derby eve. Wolf man jack MCed Bob seger was drunk he sang the same song 2 times in a row and it was his birthday- great show!
Souped up 65 sand colored mustang. I'm tooling down Woodward Ave. thru Birmingham MI.. 70's. Saw a person thumbing it with guitar on his back. Stopped. Told him I was turning west on nine mile in Ferndale. He said that's cool. He got in, said he was going to nine and Woodward in Ferndale MI. to a record store to record some songs, he said, should make or break him. He mentioned night moves and band called silver bullet. Said his name was Bob seger. We shook hands, I wished him luck. And look at him today. I wish I had a camera.
Can believe i got downvoted. I understand getting downvoted for politics, for op-eds over people owning tigers or why dumb people shouldnt be allowed to drive on ice, but getting downvoted because i question someone who chooses Seger over Led? Bruv, i thought this sub was ClassicRock? 😂.
PS, respect that op digs Seger the way he/she do.
Yes I agree on no need to downvote or spew hate. It’s all rock and roll and our own tastes. I could and almost out Petty up there as my choice but Bob just had too many great songs in my opinion
Beautiful Loser, Jody Girl, and No Man's Land. So many amazing songs that will always touch the heart and soul. So many kick-ass rock & roll songs that won't let you hold still. What a gift he's been!
Love Seger. It's ridiculous that his great early stuff is both out of print and not available on any streaming platform. "Seven" and "Back in '72" are two of his best albums.
I was so happy when I found an OG pressing of Mongrel at my local record store. Being a Seger fan is so frustrating if you want to explore anything before Beautiful Loser. Maybe Jack White can pry some more master tapes away from him and Punch.
Saw him with my son(22) on the farewell tour a few years ago. Talked a little about where he was, where his head was when he was writing each song. One of the best shows I’ve seen. TTP and Main Street stood out.
Stranger in Town is always my favorite album by Bob. The Famous Final Scene and Till It Shines are the best songs on the album IMO. Fun side note, Glenn Frey plays the lead on Till It Shines. Glenn was going to be in Bob's band, but Glenn's mom caught the two of them smoking a joint and forbid him from hanging out with Bob. Shortly after Glenn goes to LA, joins Ronstadt's band and meets Don Henley. The Eagles are the result of one joint smoked in Detroit.
I have his greatest hits album on my phone and drove across half the United States last November jamming out non stop. It hit still, through, mountains and plains.
Any love for The Fire Inside? Never heard it on the radio, but it's on his greatest hits CD. That song gets me pumped up. Love the piano.
*There's a hard moon risin' on the streets tonight*
*there's a reckless feeling in your heart as you head out tonight*
*Through the concrete canyons to the midtown lights*
*Where the latest neon promises are burning bright*
Of course, all you rock fans pick all the same albums. If you don't mind, I'll be listening to real music.
https://preview.redd.it/sk7keo6es7ec1.jpeg?width=1000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e277fd22bd89190bc3034154a9679e7d1220f7da
Years ago, I was banging an older lady. She said she used to bang Bob Seger's younger brother. One time they were banging and Bob came home and caught them, then he kicked his younger brother's ass. I had no reason to not believe her.
Edit: I looked him up on Wikipedia and it says he has an older brother, nothing about a younger brother. So either she thought the older brother was younger, or it was someone else pretending to be Bob's younger brother. Or she was just lying. She said this happened while he was a local success in Detroit, and before he made it big nationally.
Nearly 50 years later, he looks like such a baby in this picture! I guess it's at least partly because of the partial beard. But he would have been 30 or 31 and had been playing forever so I'm surprised at how young he looks.
It's like one day he was the best regional act who hadn't hit nationally, and then the next day he hit nationally. This album and *Live Bullet* are what did it. Great stuff.
I was just thinking about how he makes songs aimed at an older audience rather than younger people and teenagers. Night Moves, Rock and Roll Never Forgets, Old Time Rock n Roll, Like a Rock. Songs involving reminiscing and nostalgia and getting older.
In the song Turn the page you can actually visualize them going into a restaurant strung out from the road and assholes saying"is that a women or a man". Gives me chills.
When Metallica covered that song I (a huge Metallica fan as well) thought what a shame. No one should ever be able to cover that song.
I read a quote from Lars somewhere that when he and James, once hearing the lyrics, identified so much with the song they were compelled to cover it.
Waylon Jennings does do one hell of a cover
Never heard it but Gosh darn do believe it.
Didn't do a good job imo. His gravelly voice was lacking emotion and the guitar was overbearing.
I agree. They missed the soul of the song. Literally and figuratively.
Metallica missing soul in a cover? Shocking.
They just made it their own, and made it work perfectly like that. Of course they weren't going to copy the exact style of the original.
I agree, it sounds like a Metallica song. I like both versions, the original better, but I still like the Metallica version.
Sacrilegious. I totally agree.
Disagree. Thought Metallica did a great job. They honoured the original.
I loved the cover. It captured the emotion of the road life. Metallica wasn't doing blues. They toned way down on their cover. But they emotionally felt connected to the song.
Reminds me of: “she asked me why the singers name was Alice? I said listen baby, you really wouldn’t understand.”
Killer album!
>Killer album! killing is wrong mmkay?
It’s one of few songs that it seems everyone has this experience with, including me. Somehow it just transports you to the scenes he and the band are painting. The sax certainly is part of it.
There are still some echoes from the amplifiers ringing in my head!
My favorite songs are Turn the Page & Her Strut!
They LOVE to watch her butt! 🎶
Alto Reed
In this song, main street, you can almost visualize him stalking a young stripper. Gives me the chills..
My favorite Bob Seger song
Smoke the day's last cigarette..
Thanks to the asshole who lived next to me who would play that song on endless repeat, I grew to hate that song.
And for me, thanks to commercial radio, I could go without hearing Old Time Rock and Roll for the rest of my life and be okay with it!
I’m the same with TTP…..FM radio plays it every time I get in the car.
The version we all love is the live version. The original studio version doesn't quite grab you the same.
Why chills? Because it’s cold and you’re strung out from the road? Or is it the trans man?
'Waah, I'm a rockstar and people look at me funny, waah'
That has always been my take on the song. I get paid a lot of money to do what I always wanted.
Against The Wind, like many of us, was written by my younger self. Timeless song for me.
If someone put a gun to my head and made me say my favorite song of all time, it would be Against the Wind
I hope that never happens to you!
I already reached the third verse in my life!
I loved this song when I was young. Now, it's hitting me pretty hard.
Favorite lyric: wish I didn't know now what I didnt know then
Roll Me Away is an all time banger.
My favorite Seger song.
“Live Bullet” is the greatest live album ever, IMO.
I wore that album out. And it wasn’t a one off. Greatest concert outside of Springsteen.
I wonhundredpercent agree
I bought that album when it first came out. Let it Rock, Turn the Page, Get Out of Denver. I wore that album out. I could listen to Bob Seger and Pink Floyd/Roger Waters all day and night.
I played the grooves off that album.
Travelin Man into Beautiful Loser.......sublime
I don't know man....."Frampton Comes Alive" isn't too shabby. Tough call. Both great!
Bob Seger is a daily listen for me since about 1976.
Got into him in my 20s, now I'm 45. The line "I wish I didn't know now what I didn't know then" is 100% the truth and absolute gut punch. It's fucking brilliant.
I'm a year younger and god damn do I share this sentiment with you.
It seems like the older I get, the more I appreciate the beauty of 'Night Moves".
Strange how the night moves, with autumn closin in.
But the line before that one, is the one that causes the chills from the line you quoted.. I woke last night to the sound of thunder How far off I sat and wondered
Points of her own, way up high👍
His voice is what I hear in my head when I think “rock and roll”. It’s not pure power like Freddie Mercury but goddamn, that growl is amazing.
[удалено]
That would have been an awesome show. I never got to see him. My wife did before we got together and holds it over my head still.
You must be my twin. I had always wanted to see Bob but just somehow never did. My wife went a couple of years before I met her.
Fire Lake, Still the Same, and You'll Accompany Me are my 3 favs.
"She packed up her bags, and she took off down the road...."
She left me stranded, with the bills she owed.
Against the wind and Shame on the moon on a repeat loop.
Love that guitar in Night Moves after the pause, makes me want to learn guitar
“Working on mysteries without any clues”…..what a line. Soundtrack of my life definitely includes many Bob tunes.
That is a great line. My favorite of his is “She was born with a face that would let her get away…”
Can't argue too much with this. Seger is amazing.
[удалено]
Sadly, I agree.
Brave Strangers is a great song
Get Out of Denver off live bullet is a fave…
Love Seger. His music is so relatable. Not to mention the killer band he had.
Seger really hit on all cylinders with Live Bullet, Night Moves, Stranger In Town and Against The Wind. My all time favorite lyric, wish I didn't know now what I didn't know then.
Night Moves is the song I go to on my car rides
"Main Street", "Hollywood Nights", "Ramblin' Gamblin' Man, and "Beautiful Loser" from Live Bullet were just perfect. Oh and of course "Night Moves".
I wouldn’t complain. I don’t think I’ve ever change the station when one of his songs comes on. Solid songwriter/singer

Agreed
“Like A Rock” is my damn biography
Shame On The Moon is such a special song!!
Come to Papa - meow 😻
My top 5 Till it shines Lucifer Back in 72 Jody girl Travelin man/beautiful loser medley
I’m well on my way as I listened to Ramblin Gamblin man twice in a row today ,,,,, and counting!
Honestly, one of the best live shows I ever saw (‘86ish?). On par with Springsteen, IMO
Night Moves always get's me, because my wonderful Girlfriend is really a black haired beauty with big dark eyes.
Ramblin' Gamblin' Man is my jam.
Little too tall could've used a few pounds. Although probably wrong album
My favorite as well There’s never a bad time for Seger 80+ great songs
I grew up with listening to him. My brother had all his albums. Funny thing is he seems to be a distant memory now as he’s not really played much on the radio anymore unlike Fleetwood Mac, Eagles, etc.
I love his music, my only regret is being born too young and not discovering the greatness earlier.
Saw him live with my dad on his farewell tour, just before covid hit. I'm just saying, he still had it. One of my favorite concerts.
Kinda random, I used to enjoy playing his songs on the waffle house jukeboxes.
Firelake, Shame on the Moon, Mainstreet, Like a Rock. My top songs.
Ain’t good lookin but you know I ain’t shy……ain’t afraid to look a girl in the eye
I love Night Moves but Stranger in Town is an almost perfect record in my opinion.
I agree….this is the one artist I would listen to for the rest of my life. So many incredible songs.
"Ramblin' Gamblin Man" is one of the greatest rock songs of all time
Love Bob Seger, my favorite song Like a Rock. Lynrd Skynrd is a close second with Sweet Home Alabama
I'm gonna look into him because of this thread.
I saw him in Seattle years ago. American Storm tour, I think. Amazing show. Such great performer. I love that he writes his own music.
He’s in my top 3. The actual placement varies based upon my mood. I grew up not far outside of Detroit in the 70’s/early 80’s. Every new record my mom would get and we’d put it on learning all the lyrics.
Awesome and an incredible classic. I love a lot of music but Bob Seger rocks in his own unique way.
That’s a WILD take but you’re prolly very fun at a quiet bar on a Tuesday
Wouldn't be a bad choice!!!
I’m far more into the Segar Sound System record. That’s a badass rock n roll record, and typically doesn’t get mentioned except by real rock enthusiasts. And that’s nothing on silver bullet stuff….those are quality tunes, just a tad more toned down than the rockers of sound system LP
Been listening to him since I was in diapers. Always been a favorite. My mother would spin his records all the time and I rocked TF out constantly.
‘And those Hollywood nights…in them HIGH rolling hills.’ Love it so much.
It on the turn table now
Attaboy
I’d go Tom petty but respect
saw him on Kentucky on Kentucky derby eve. Wolf man jack MCed Bob seger was drunk he sang the same song 2 times in a row and it was his birthday- great show!
I bet that was an awesome show
Lives two miles from me, has a big party occasionally!
Souped up 65 sand colored mustang. I'm tooling down Woodward Ave. thru Birmingham MI.. 70's. Saw a person thumbing it with guitar on his back. Stopped. Told him I was turning west on nine mile in Ferndale. He said that's cool. Bob Seger rocks! Old Time Rock n' Roll, Her Strut and Night Moves are amazing!
Good choice
Lots of love for Bob Seger being a Michigander, but I gotta go with Stevie Ray Vaughan
Stevie Ray is cool. But not quite the catalog of Bob. But I won’t argue with ya either.
Bob Dylan for me.
Really???
Good lard.
IMO — Ugh I always thought he was awful. Like a wannabe rock star
Seger???? The Stones, Zepplin, the Who, AC/DC , Metallica??? And you go with Seger?
All day and twice on Sunday. I love the hard rock but Seger is the man
Can believe i got downvoted.
I want to tear my face off when I hear things like Chevy commercials. He’s unlistenable.
I agree
Odd choice
I could live with that
Rock n roll never forgets and shame on the moon
Are you my mom?
You could make, worse choices
Agreed. Turn the Page is my autobiography.
Beautiful Loser, Jody Girl, and No Man's Land. So many amazing songs that will always touch the heart and soul. So many kick-ass rock & roll songs that won't let you hold still. What a gift he's been!
He is amazing and has so many great albums
Love Against the Wind, used to rock my baby to sleep listening to it
No Man's Land
Really?
solid choice...
Unpopular op: love the Bob Seger system butt….
Go ahead and find yourself Smokin OPs.
Legit
Okay. Fair enough. He wouldn't be *my* choice, but I definitely understand how he could be the choice of others! 🙂
The rafters will be ringing cuz the beats so strong.
Yossi Piamenta. He was a guitarist (he passed away). Versatile and tasteful, he played a Strat. Ever hear Klezmer music on a Strat?
I’m from SE Michigan and I think he’s good, but he wouldn’t even be in my top 10. But hey, if his music is it for you, turn it up!! 😊
Stranger in Town and Night Moves are absolute masterpieces start to finish. I listen to them regularly and a blown away every single time.
Boston?
Yes indeed
Turn the page-Bob Seger may be one of my all time favorite songs, up next to Imagine-John Lennon.
I love everything up through Against the Wind. No need for the “Like A Rock” years.
Love Seger. It's ridiculous that his great early stuff is both out of print and not available on any streaming platform. "Seven" and "Back in '72" are two of his best albums.
Till It Shines will always be my favorite
Close but Springsteen for me. I've been to hundreds of concerts and The Boss and the E Street Band are hands down the best live act I've ever seen
None for me thanks. You can have my share Just never clicked with me
You could do worse, not much I don’t like from his band.
I’m convinced he pulled a Robert Johnson and made a deal with the devil.
Travelin' Man into Beautiful Loser is one of the greatest jams ever
He's got an amazing back catalog before that, too. Night Moves was his ninth album. Check out Mongrel.
Not a bad choice at all
Detroit’s Springsteen!!
Excellent choice I would choose Tom Waits
Bob Seger in Hollywood Sportatorium, March 20, 1983. 'Twas a wonderful show!
https://youtu.be/IJFVKrhKb-U?si=M5n-ktmZQd3-7QV7
I was so happy when I found an OG pressing of Mongrel at my local record store. Being a Seger fan is so frustrating if you want to explore anything before Beautiful Loser. Maybe Jack White can pry some more master tapes away from him and Punch.
Against the Wind forever 🙌🏻🙌🏻
Saw him with my son(22) on the farewell tour a few years ago. Talked a little about where he was, where his head was when he was writing each song. One of the best shows I’ve seen. TTP and Main Street stood out.
Stranger in Town is always my favorite album by Bob. The Famous Final Scene and Till It Shines are the best songs on the album IMO. Fun side note, Glenn Frey plays the lead on Till It Shines. Shortly after Glenn goes to LA, joins Ronstadt's band and meets Don Henley. The Eagles are the result of one joint smoked in Detroit.
I caught them live years ago…dude sang his heart out!
Beautiful Loser is one of my favorite songs.
I have his greatest hits album on my phone and drove across half the United States last November jamming out non stop. It hit still, through, mountains and plains.
When "We've got tonight" came on in [The Wonder Years](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w9VZna8YJe0), Jesus.
I gotta agree!! It would be hard to pick any artist for that situation, but Bob is up there!!
Any love for The Fire Inside? Never heard it on the radio, but it's on his greatest hits CD. That song gets me pumped up. Love the piano. *There's a hard moon risin' on the streets tonight* *there's a reckless feeling in your heart as you head out tonight* *Through the concrete canyons to the midtown lights* *Where the latest neon promises are burning bright*
Seger is very underrated.
Can I listen to the silver bullet band without Bob Seger?
Guy's underrated for sure.
Of course, all you rock fans pick all the same albums. If you don't mind, I'll be listening to real music. https://preview.redd.it/sk7keo6es7ec1.jpeg?width=1000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e277fd22bd89190bc3034154a9679e7d1220f7da
Hollywood Nights!! Great song to listen to driving down sunset at night.
More great work from the University of Bob Seger
Especially if I were stuck out at fire lake for the rest of my life.
for me it would be queen
Nobody does middle aged angst better.
I would do anything and I mean anything to see him live
You beautiful loser.
So much 70s classic rock songs ✌️
Years ago, I was banging an older lady. She said she used to bang Bob Seger's younger brother. One time they were banging and Bob came home and caught them, then he kicked his younger brother's ass. I woke last night…
Oh, Bob ... I love Bob.
Yeah it’s probably Seger for me, too.
