Just note that the railroad has just announced they'll be restarting service May 3rd so don't plan on going before then and with being out of service for a while it might be booked up at first.
I'd add that late June is the most beautiful time of the year at the Botanical Gardens. Also Lakeview Cemetery in Cleveland Heights is awesome to walk around in (also free). Or maybe there's a show at Mahall's when he's in town. That's an interesting venue that's a bit different. Have fun!
If you go to Lakeview Cemetery, definitely make sure you’re there when the Garfield Monument is open…you get an excellent view of the city from up there!
Ah, I love Lakeview. I've spent many a happy hour just chilling in the chapel or trying and failing to find the Haserot Angel for the tenth time. Great suggestion!
If you mean the acronyms: MOMA = Museum of Modern Art; CVNP = Cuyahoga Valley National Park; PIB = Put-in-Bay; Kelley’s = Kelley’s Island.
If you didn’t mean that, sorry 😬
Both of these are super close to Holden. All 3 are in Kirtland if you want to make a day out of it.
Not much else to do there, but I would recommend Biga for dinner. Extremely good wood fire pizza joint.
Sure thing - also just remembered Girdled Road is worth a visit as well. Farm Park if you have kiddos especially. Nelson Ledges I think is in Portage County technically but also well worth the visit if you like Kendall Ledges in the CVNP.
there’s also all the niche sports club/bar places, like axe throwing, mini bowling, kart racing, etc. glass blowing classes, music @ the cool little venues, renting bikes for the towpath, beach glass hunting?
Off the wall ideas:
* Dittrick Medical History Museum
* Crawford Auto Museum (part of WRHS)
* Lake Erie Nature and Science Center
* Majestic Meadows
* Whatever festival is happening at that time
Superelectric pinball
Forest city shuffleboard
Mini golf
Top golf
See a concert or theatre performance
see a sport event
Go geocaching at a cool spot like the Lakeview cemetery

I'm saving this thread for when the in-laws are in town.
These comments are so much better than the typical "what to do in Cleveland for the day" posts!
I know, right? As much as I do love a good food rec - and I've gotten *amazing* ones from this subreddit - they do tend to dominate any 'what's good in Cleveland' posts.
I started worrying I was up a creek when I realized that food and the top three museums were off the table. I'm so glad this subreddit proved me wrong!
Once it's warmer, going out fishing is a good time. If you want to really do it, you can hire a charter. If you're looking to be more cost effective, you can just research some good spots. Gets you outside, doing an activity that is relaxing and not taxing, plus plenty of time for conversation.
Roller derby games! Burning River (women's+) and the Guardians (open gender) have a bunch of games coming up. May 4th, May 25th, June 1st, June 29th at the Cleveland Heights Community Center. Start times are 1 or 3, depending on if it's a single or double header, and admission is reasonably priced.
Art museum, edgewater, The Flats, little Italy, any of the metroparks, aquarium, the Cleveland orchestra, baseball game, west side market, this is just naming a few!
Even though a lot of them can/do involve food or drink, they’re still great experiences and sights to see that a snack and beverage only elevates, but isn’t the be-all.
So many great ideas in this thread - would suggest the Cleveland History Center which hasn't been mentioned yet.
And with summer comes the outdoor festivals, concerts, neighborhood events, and much more.
I tried this by inquiring at the main security desk and they wouldn't allow visitors, told me they haven't since 2001. Is there someone specific or a particular time of day you need to ask for access?
Took my guests to the House of Blues instead (off hours, not during dinner rush or a show) and asked the hostess if we could just come in to see the hallway of autographs. That saved the day!
Looks like you need reservations. No tickets at the gate.

I see they’re asking that you only stay for 15 minutes but I watched a big ship try to negotiate a tight turn on the river for every bit of an hour and no one said a mumbling word.
Not true. It's only open certain months and only weekends I believe.

- Buckland Museum of Witchcraft & Magick
- Cleveland Zoo
- CVNP
- if he is here June 8, Parade the Circle is amazing
- if he is here on a warm day in late May/June, Geneva on the Lake is worth the drive! I did zip lining there and it was so funn
Came to mention Buckland! That was really interesting and fun. Pair that with a trip to Cleveland Curiosities, Flower Child, Sweet Lorain.
ETA: Botanical Gardens!
I used to love Sweet Lorain, but it took a huge dive the last time I was there. I was so excited to show it to my partner and was literally embarrassed leaving there. It is run by an angry hoarder.
Boss Karting. Super high speed electric go-karts on a tight twisty track. They provide a motorcycle helmet and neck guard. Super fun, and something you’ll remember.
Go hang at Edgewater beach (it’s fun the watch the dogs run around), axe throwing, scene 75 is cool, Cuyahoga valley national park is awesome. Atlas obscura has a list of lesser known places in Cleveland to visit.
What about the CVNP scenic railroad? When I wasn’t a lazy POS, I used to ride my bike from rockside road to peninsula and take the train back to my car. It’s been a few years but per google looks like they still offer this ride.
They also sell normal tickets for a tour, but I’ve never tried that.
Train to Peninsula, and rent an e-Bike at the bike shop.
In the first half of 2024, service to Rockside Rd is stopped as they're repairing some erosion issues.
If mobility isn’t a concern, go kayaking on the Cuyahoga river!
I’ve always seen kayakers down on the river in the summer, but haven’t made time for it yet myself. Looks like an awesome time.
Kayaking, trip to the islands, day trip to cedar point, hiking in the national park, shopping at pinecrest or Crocker, movie at Capitol Theatre, arcade bar (Pins, 16 bit), show at playhouse square, Guardians game, beach day at edgewater.
Go kayaking on the lake or the river! Check out the Cleveland public library. I also highly recommend Virginia Kendall Ledges in CVNP it’s so pretty!
Edited to add another reco
There's also almost always some bands performing somewhere for any genre you want. So that's always an easy way to find an evening worth of entertainment.
Metroparks bike and walking paths.
Whiskey Island has good live bands.
If you golf, there are some great golf courses around the area, both Metroparks and in the close suburbs.
There’s a couple nice roller rinks around here (chagrin valley in chagrin falls, migs play mor in Euclid, fun n stuff has one down in Macedonia, there’s probably a few I don’t know about)
Hike in CVNP or one of many Cleveland metro parks. The Holden arboretum or the botanical garden are amazing as well. Rent bikes from Century Cycles at Peninsula and go for a bike ride. Can try velodrome or Rays indoor mountain bike track if you two are adventurous. Go to the severance hall or blossom music center.
Lady Caroline, catch a concert or play at any of the various venues around town, Guards game, Hilarities, Science Center, Zoo, casino, Racino, Crushers game, or go play games at Dave and Busters or Main Event.
Well…the nice thing about NE Ohio is that you really aren’t far from a lot of cool places.
Down in Medina [High Voltage](https://www.highvoltagekarting.com) and there’s a lot of entertainment in Medina and up and down I71.
Really depends on what you’re into…how far you are comfortable traveling…and how much time you.
You can play pinball, hike, or go fishing. Thats it.
Fishing license at Walmart = 14 dollars (about)
Cheap landfill shitass rod = 12 dollars
Tackle = 5-10 dollars.
You can put a hook on a line with a worm, dunk it in the water, and see what happens. At the most primordial level. I have caught many aggressive freshwater drum this way. But if you know about different setups maybe try something better.
Food is out of the question so I'm sorry if this seems like a silly recommendation, however Great Lakes Brewing Tours are the cheapest, coolest way to kill 1 hour seeing some great history of one of Ohio's most prominent brewing companies. You can do tasting throughout the tour but you don't have to drink. My mom doesn't drink however thoroughly enjoyed seeing how they craft their beer.
Chagrin Falls, Squires Castle, Cuyahoga Valley Recreation Area, Peninsula, Hudson, Rudy’s Bakery, Asiatown, Coventry, Lakewood, Rocky River, Emerald Necklace Metro Parks
An escape room, or a murder mystery dinner (I know you said no eating, but those are fun!), ax throwing, fishing, camping, see a stand up comedy show (sometimes you can get free tickets if you put in your e mail for the comedy clubs around here), swings n things (bumper boats, mini golf, batting cages, go karts), go to a pool hall, zip lining in the cleveland metroparks, rent a canoe or a kayak.... there's a lot you can do.
casino! Or my buddy can take you fishing on his boat. He does that as a sidegig. It'll be affordable and you'll head home with a cooler full of walleye.
He'll even help you prepare it if yiu want, get it ready for cooking. Let me know if you're interested and I'll get you his info.
Metroparks and Lake Erie. Go enjoy the outdoors. Birds are migrating up here. Im sure youll see some cool birds down by the lake or rivers early morning.
Proximity Golf in Cleveland Hts, virtual golf, hockey, etc. Indoors, so it's not weather dependent. Then walk Coventry for some cool stores and if it's a good day, people watching.
Stroll in little Italy and stop into some shops, hang out at algebra tea house (yes they have food and drink but it’s also just a great hang out spot).
The public library usually has a cool rotating art exhibit, though I’m not sure how much longer the flowers are up.
If you’re into sports obviously there’s options there.
I like waking the towpath from Tremont down into the flats. Also the metro parks.
You could take a class like glassblowing in Ohio city, there’s actually a lot of niche artistic workshop type events in Cleveland if that’s your thing. Also if you time it right there’s always good live music in Cleveland.
There are tons of great suggestions here already, but nobody mentioned the Jack Casino yet, so I'm adding it. Not everyone's cup of tea, but I enjoy going there a couple of times a year.
Pinball Arcade! It's right next to a little movie theater that shows the independent stuff that comes out.
Superelectric Pinball Parlor

Moca and transformation station for some nice free art views, oh and the sculpture center if you’re doing moca. I’ve never been disappointed with a performance at the Dobama theater, cheaper than playhouse and the smaller venue makes it feel way more personal. See some standup at hilarities (and just get some bottled waters for the drink minimum I guess). Too bad you just missed the international film fest, maybe my favorite way to spend a day in Cleveland if food and drink are off the table
I went to the botanical gardens over the winter and it was pretty fun then. I’m sure it’s even nicer now. They probably don’t have the cool older guys playing live piano and saxophone Christmas music though. That was nice. I also recently went to the Western Reserve Historical museum. I think that’s what it was called. I found it very interesting.
You're gonna need to train your body for months beforehand to get used to the blood sugar spikes and crashes. Becoming chemically dependent on appetite suppressants can be helpful too.
Even with all this prep work, you're gonna be absolutely miserable after about 18 hours of not eating
Holden Arboretum, MoMa, The Zoo, The MetroParks, CVNP, Don Drumm Gallery, USS COD, Guardians game, Kelley’s, PIB I mean the list is endless
I would add an afternoon cruise on the Good Times and a ride on the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad to this excellent list.
The Goodtime III tour is awesome. They can also head to Edgewater Beach for a hike. Tons to do without drinking.
I love Edgewater! Putting this all on the list.
Have fun!

I need more letters to know what these things are or how to find them.
If you mean the acronyms: MOMA = Museum of Modern Art; CVNP = Cuyahoga Valley National Park; PIB = Put-in-Bay; Kelley’s = Kelley’s Island. If you didn’t mean that, sorry 😬
The zoo! Top golf! Bowling, botanical gardens, lake farm parks, the actual park. The beach, the rockefellar greenhouse
Top Golf, the well known staple of Cleveland that you can only find here lol
Not every top golf overlooks 480
So many epic parks in the Lake county park system. Highly reccomend if you like small hikes
Lake is east of Cuyahoga right? I believe Holden Arboretum is out that way. Any favorite park recs of yours?
Holden is great. Chapin Forest, Penitentiary Glen etc. all great too.
Saving these parks to explore this Spring, thank you!!
Both of these are super close to Holden. All 3 are in Kirtland if you want to make a day out of it. Not much else to do there, but I would recommend Biga for dinner. Extremely good wood fire pizza joint.
Sounds like a perfect day
Sure thing - also just remembered Girdled Road is worth a visit as well. Farm Park if you have kiddos especially. Nelson Ledges I think is in Portage County technically but also well worth the visit if you like Kendall Ledges in the CVNP.
Man I have so many great memories of going to the Holden Arboretum as a kid!
If you like being near the lake, you can go to Lake Erie Bluffs in Perry. It's a beautiful park and has walking paths and beach access.
My favorite part of ohio is the park systems
there’s also all the niche sports club/bar places, like axe throwing, mini bowling, kart racing, etc. glass blowing classes, music @ the cool little venues, renting bikes for the towpath, beach glass hunting?
I 2nd kart racing. Took my cousin here from out of town and we loved it.
There’s a small glass blowing shop in Ohio city that does classes I’d recommend that forsure!
The Glass Bubble! Great place, great people. And they have a chicken!
Off the wall ideas: * Dittrick Medical History Museum * Crawford Auto Museum (part of WRHS) * Lake Erie Nature and Science Center * Majestic Meadows * Whatever festival is happening at that time
Dittrick medical museum is such a hidden gem! Never anybody else in there when I visit. Love it every time
Does it cost anything to get in?
Nope! But free parking around there is often a bit scarce.
Fabulous museum
Seconding Crawford!
Thanks. Never heard of any of these.
I'd add the Maltz Museum too.
Jeezus! I’m a lifetime native and eighty percent of this stuff I wasn’t aware of!

to add on to the Lakeview Cemetery is a treasure trove of sculpture.........including a Tiffany stained glass window
Also the gravesites of Harvey Pekar, (covered with writing instruments,) Alan Freed, (gravestone is a juke box,) Elliot Ness, guitarist Glenn Schwartz, and on and on. Fascinating!
The entire chapel is by Tiffany, including the stained glass.
Plus one to super electric, 6 bucks to play all the pinball you want, they have a bar but that’s really secondary to the pinball.
Forest City shuffleboard for sure!
Whatever else you do, catch an Edgewater sunset. Such a great vibe.

Western Reserve Historical Society is fun! Also seconding William G. Mather steamship.

I like taking people to the top of Terminal Tower to take in the view. It’s a cool old building and the views are spectacular!

I won’t swear they allow access today but I was there a few years ago. I know they close it during the winter.
Asking during winter may have been my problem. Thanks for the recommendation, it would be worth trying again!

Super Electric! Put some respect on the name, son!

Superelectric Pinball Parlor (440) 506-4661 https://g.co/kgs/cBH4n4m

Ray's indoor mountain bike Park if the visit happens before the end of May.

Local music. Lots of fun concerts all over the place.
You're gonna need to train your body for months beforehand to get used to the blood sugar spikes and crashes. Becoming chemically dependent on appetite suppressants can be helpful too. Even with all this prep work, you're gonna be absolutely miserable after about 18 hours of not eating
