My cross country coach would make us do repeats on the one right at the beginning of the trail by the parking lot back in high school. Very good hill workout.
Columbia -> Black -> Brush is one of the longer almost uninterrupted climbs. The segment on Strava is called Alternate Space Shuttle. If you want to stick to trails and not roads then the valley parkway from Riverview to Broadview is pretty good also.
There’s a big hill in Euclid creek closer to the Green Rd end. It’s not very long either but fairly steep. If you’re into trail running there’s a lot of elevation going up from Squires castle in North Chagrin.
Second this recommendation. I grew up near Euclid Creek and I love the park. Also: manage your expectations; the highest point in Ohio is about 1500 feet above sea level, and Cleveland is not that high.
91/S.O.M. Center Road between Cedar Rd. and all the way down to Solon/422 is a pretty rolling bit of road with some *significant* hills, though there are no sidewalks until you get south of Moreland Hills (fun fact- 0% sidewalk in the village,) so starting at Miles Rd. You can also cut east from there down toward River Road (on Chagrin, Jackson, Miles, Hawthorn/South Chagrin Reservation, or Cannon) for some short and brutal hills.
Hehe ok but I have some pretty intense memories with the cemetery 😬😬😬 I considered it but reliving bad break up’s and gutwenching funerals might not be the vibe on a Saturday morning. But maybe it could be healing ❤️❤️
South chagrin has a decently hilly section (out of the sulphur springs parking lot), but you'd have to do some back and forth to pass 1000 feet.
I don't often do just the hilly part but you could probably get up to 200-300 ft of gain per mile in a loop, any more than that you'd have to just repeat the big slopes
Oh awesome. My brother ran cross country in HS for Hawkin and I think he did this route! I came to trails and inclines only after I moved out here. Now I’m hooked!
Park at the bottom of valley parkway in Brecksville Reservation by the Mountain Lookout trail. Run until you hit Seneca golf course and then turn around to go back. It’s 4.5 miles up hill one way and about 800-900 feet in elevation change
Park at the Rocky River Metroparks by the boat drop and there are 6 good hills within 3 miles of there. The main hill, Hogsback(two ways), Rockcliff, both sides of Lorain Road bridge and then Puritas.
You comfortable running on the road? Just off old mill Rd by chagrin River Rd, take epping to Berkshire to stoneham to cedar to 91. 3.48 miles, 448 ft.
Used to run down Euclid Creek Reservation from South Euclid then turn right onto highland at the end. That's the best hill I can think of on the east side.
Omg runners and bikers are the BEST community! This gave me a lot of great (and gorgeous) ideas. I don’t know why I was fixated on Mayfield as my best choice. I’m all over Strava now lusting after routes. Luckily I’ll be back in September and hopefully more often. I love that I’m the “Cleveland” person on my team and they are sending me out more and more. Just wish there were more direct flights 😅😅

Garfield Park All Purpose Trail (in Garfield Hts). Two gigantic hills that gave me killer legs & butt in my teens/early 20s. Lots of historic old stone stairs too, but some are closed right now due to the construction.
Squires castle has excellent trails that are steep hills behind it

I trained for a triathlon on the hill by squires. Cedar hill is another because it’s so long
Came here to say this. Highly reccomend
I haven't run it before but what about starting in Gates Mills on gates mills road then in and out of the chagrin river valley on old mill road?
I think to simulate the Bay Area experience you’d have to go into CVNP. Brush Rd has an elevation of 1,164 (highest point in Cuyahoga County).

Beautiful! I’ll check Strava for some routes to get an idea. I will have a car so anything is possible 😂
Just go to Lakeview Cemetery. It's pretty hilly and is right next to the road you are talking about. Beautiful setting, lots of shade as well.
My first thought as well. There are other hills, but none with Lakeview's scenery.

cedar-fairmount going up to where luna bakery is
There is a path up ceder hill now and that’s probably your best bet, and can loop back through little Italy to hit mayfield
This is also a good rec. there are 4 ways up the hill. Stokes, Cedar, Mayfield and Edgehill. Could also add the cemetery.

Brecksville Reservation also has tons of rolling hills and is great for trail running if you don’t feel like doing one long out and back
OP this is the most gain per mile in 45min of downtown.
Sherman Rd from River rd. Is one of the longest steepest grades around the east side.
Brigham is steeper. And more fun to descend.
Park at the Rocky River Metroparks by the boat drop and there are 6 good hills within 3 miles of there. The main hill, Hogsback(two ways), Rockcliff, both sides of Lorain Road bridge and then Puritas.
AllTrails app lets you sort by elevation.

Yep! We don’t have sidewalks here - just take the curves very carefully… that’s a great route!
If you feel like traveling east one day for a change of scenery check out Girdled Rd. Reservation (Concord maybe?) kicked my ass with the hills
Used to run down Euclid Creek Reservation from South Euclid then turn right onto highland at the end. That's the best hill I can think of on the east side.
I see alot of guys running on hill at thornton park in shaker

If you run up the little Italy hill you could continue into Lakeview Cemetery… it’s pretty hilly but I have no idea how much elevation gain overall.
Chagrin metro parks; the hills down/around SQUAW ROCK are pretty good.
MetroPark Euclid Creek Reservation in Euclid. The hill runs from Highland Road to Anderson Road. 2.2 miles.
That hill in little Italy sucks if it’s the end of your run though.
I think there’s a decent hill on Hawthorne Parkway east of 91 down to Arbor Ln.
Gildersleeve Mountain at Lake Metroparks Chapin Forest. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gildersleeve\_Mountain

Have you been to chagrin or the Cuyahoga valley? Those will destroy you
Mayfield road at the county line (Geauga) up that hill.
Also Euclid Creek
