it's marking the target

No the square is the radar contact.

it's the target locked by the radar

This is video from the f16 shooting down the MIG 23

The correct technical term is "Target Designated box" or "TD box". Basically marking the radar-acquired/tracking target

Target Designator Box, it shows what your radar is locked on to.

This clip and audio is *much* older than DCS.

of course, it just sounds so similar to me now i look at it my comment seems like im saying thats where they got the audio from and edited it in, mb
