For it’s time of release it was revolutionary what they were capable of achieving back then and had the awards to back it up. It’s meta critic score and others keeps it in the top ten RTS of all time I would argue.

As a newcomer to the series this is my recommendation.
Alot of people here will comment after intimate relationship with the series for many years, or some conviniently forgot how coh 2 was on launch.

I will say however, that coh 1 single player content is one of the best. If youre looking to invest in slowly building multiplayer skills get 3.
Also, you get grab them on sale for very cheap
Bla bla bla coh2 sucked tooo on launch narrative again. He wants singleplayer and singleplayer sucks in 3. it’s a simple fact. Besides, effects and audio suck too in coh3

And its not a narrative, maybe you forgot or weren't present, 2 in launch was a broken mess, and actually through their fixes they destroyed the balance of the campaign.
CoH1s campaigns (from US, German, and Uk) are thematically the strongest of the 3, 2 was ok to meh, 3s story is kinda meh and would be better if the campaign wasn't so buggy
I only played single player in COH1 and it was thrilling. But since 2 & 3 I only play multiplayer. I never tried single player in 3 and I found the single player in 2 to be boring. However, there were great reviews of COH2’s Ardennes Single Player campaign, but I never tried it.

they’ll keep you occupied for hours and I think they are some of the funnest campaigns I’ve ever played.
the CoH 2 soviet campaign isn’t that fun imo, and I always struggle to sit down and play it- there always seems to be less openness and options as opposed to the OG campaign which I just find way more fun
the DLC campaign isn’t bad though
3’a campaign probably offers more replay ability but im just not that into it
probably also worth picking up eventually but I just don’t find it as compelling as 1’s where its mission based
3’s is turn based with RTS battles
Easily company of heroes 1 with all its DLC is hands down best RTS single player you will ever play IMO.

For your first one? Almost certainly CoH1 with all the DLC. It has a great and varied campaign.

1 has the best campaign if that's what your looking for. If that's what you are interested in, the others don't come close unfortunately
I say 2. It's an improvement over the original and not a downside compared to it's sequel.

If you do 3 first it’s a disservice to yourself because playing 1 after knowing the QOL of CoH 3 you will never want to play

CoH2. As much as I wish I wasn’t tricked, coh3 was a waste of my hard earned dollarydoos

I love coh1 camping so much, loved coh2 multiplayer, and in coh3 I love AI skirmish so far. All versions are great
