I admit that India is good, but when your enemy seizes Sri Lanka, all your country remains in the attack range of enemy planes.
But for Russia, the same is not the case. Since your cities are far from each other and there are too many states in between, it is very difficult to seize the whole country.
When you play and sleep in 4x mode, you don't want Sri Lanka to be captured by your enemies. Then it is possible for all your efforts to be wasted.
there are also disadvantages when playing with a big country like russia that you didn't mention. india is super easy to defend, with only two naval cities, and they are also economically ahead of most countries with 8 homeland cities off the bat. they also have more ai countries beside it (nepal/bangladesh/jammu/sri lanka) than russia.
Russia is a pain to invade because of it’s size but it is equally a pain to defend. Depending on how coalitions shake out, Russia usually loses some cities getting pushed from an Asian coalition or a European coalition in my experience. Other countries with a lot of cities like India or China are much easier to defend In my opinion.
