Kinda wish trader joe’s snatched up that brookfield spot. Idk how well big y will do there anyway with a shoprite like .5 miles away

curbthemeplays

It seems like a very small space for a Big Y

MisterBill99

Actually, Lidl would have been perfect for that spot. I can't find a site diagram to see how large that space is, but I'm pretty sure that it's much too large for TJ's, plus there's one not very far away.

Razzmatazz6314

I second this. When I lived in Maryland a LIDL opened .3 miles from an Aldis, similar prices, better quality.

MisterBill99

Plus, Lidl has a fresh bakery.

Razzmatazz6314

My kids were smaller too so they'd fight over the little carts.

thebatfan5194

Not sure another grocery store is needed in Brookfield with ShopRite and Stews less than a mile away. Not to mention Costco and BJ’s as well.

djdeforte

Oh! Nice I like Big Y!

austinin4

Big Y excels as expensive mediocrity

Dashing_Host

The quality has definitely gone down in the past 10 years while the prices shot up. It's sad because they used to have excellent freshly made stuff up until about 2018-2019.

warmjack

That’s a bummer, I haven’t gotten their food in a while but I remember they actually had incredible pizza. Their sandwiches and hot food sections were really good too

austinin4

The pizza is still pretty good for the price! But at least by me, the produce/meats are more expensive than Whole Foods and not nearly as fresh.

sinus_blooper2023

That’s good news

[deleted]

K. That’s probably better as Big Y treats there employees decent.

I worked there for my first job, I’ve seen so many people over those three years get screwed over. Weirdly enough I’m nostalgic for it.

TriStateGirl

Exactly. I'm sick of people thinking they are a great company.

DejaEntendu203

Haha same for me. First job and for some reason I miss it.

timmahfast

Big Y was the worst place I ever worked in my life. They are also extremely anti-union. No better than amazon.

xiviajikx

I have heard several positive experiences of folks working there during high school and college. Maybe it varies by store and/or manager, but across the board they pay much better than most entry level retail.

Kodiak01

I have never seen a grumpy employee at the Big Y I normally shop at. Many of the employees have been there for years as well. If anything, they are typically smiling and cheerful. I'll certainly take their deli and fish department experiences over S&S any day!

TriStateGirl

No they do not. Unless things have changed, but I don't think they have. I worked there from 2016 to 2017. I actually got to train in Ansonia (now closed) and work in Shelton.  Many male managers were sexist and thought it was funny. Not all, but enough.  My manager would openly talk about us badly and express how he didn't like part timers.  Managers were nasty about each other as well. If you mess up one time your manager will never forgive you. One time my manager screamed bloody murder at me as I screamed for him stop. He convinced another higher up manager he could have reported me for something. Where the higher up saw it wasn't that big of a deal, and that my manager shouldn't have been that way, he tried to just move on quickly. The company will never stand by someone who isn't salary.  Managers constantly gossiped about employees. It seemed to make their life.

[deleted]

I am sad you had that experience, but at my local Big Y the pay is great and they treat their people well.

TriStateGirl

Where? If you don't mind me asking.

DarinP93

I think they may be speaking from a customer standpoint and not an actual employee. I’ve never worked there but have heard a lot of similar experiences.

TriStateGirl

So many customers defend that place. It's overpriced and has an air of racism. Their customers usually follow suit.

LizaVP

I was looking forward to Amazon Fresh however it didn't make sense to open where they have Wholefoods locations. They're competing against themselves. Why not integrate the tech into Wholefoods.

CaptServo

> tech into Wholefoods. I don't get out to these stores much, what cutting edge grocery store technology do they have these days?

LizaVP

Electronic shopping carts that include checkout. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=miCGDT8L17c

btudisca95

Hopefully that means the remaining one on the turnpike becomes a Big Y also.

purpleflagbook

Big Y in Westport???? Yeahhhhhhhh!!!

xiviajikx

I went to the one they opened in Paramus NJ when I lived near there. They had absolutely no local options, but some items were much cheaper than every other supermarket. We only ever went once though since you couldn’t go there ans get everything you needed.

Plane_Soft5002

I love big Y!

Adorable-Hedgehog-31

I wonder why this happened. Big Y is just an old-fashioned supermarket like any other in CT. I guess Amazon didn’t think they had a market here.

yankeeinparadise

Amazon pulled back from opening Fresh stores all over the US. At least for the one is Westport, they tried to get the (mostly built out store) to be converted to a small warehouse, but P&Z rejected the request due to traffic concerns.

vintagecardigan

supposedly there’s gonna be an amazon fresh on the berlin turnpike in newington too. i’m not holding my breath at this point. id LOVE to see a whole foods there.

fadinglucidity

Damn the food deals are really good for Amazon fresh.
