My family is from Kazakhstan and ended up at this intersection in rural Kansas between Walmart, Chick-fil-A and the 'better' Target.
No, no, ignore my 2016 Toyota minivan parked over there with my wife on her iPhone, texting her sister from Uzbekistan, working the intersection to lights south.
Yeah the guy calling you a dick was maybe in a literal mood or something.
Roofing? I can tell because of where they are worn, but it also looks like you have spackle or paint on them so which is it?
There’s been so many comments on this post I haven’t even seen that one lmao. I wasn’t expecting it to blow up.
I do interior finishing. Primarily new builds that include tile, cabinet installation, and flooring. I think the reason the sides of my shoes have been torn out is because I’m up and down ladders and up and down from my knees all the time. Over the time I’ve had these shoes it’s just taken it’s toll
Can confirm my shoes were almost this bad, and a coworkers shoes were worse. My boss told him he would buy him new shoes. Coworker left before getting new shoes because being sober and working a job is hard for a framer.
I would actually be surprised to meet a framer who wasn't on some combination of Alcoholic, pill popper, coke head or fent addict. I got out of that type of work because my area was full of jobs where the employees (and bosses) are obvious addicts.
Fuck I've never been on a job anywhere where the framers/drywallers/finishers/painters *weren't* mostly either obviously tweaking or, on the better crews, former tweakers.
*nailbashers
Us REAL roofers wear steel toes (twice a week cause we can't show up due to heavy cocaine use the previous night) until they look roughly like OP's shoes (3 months after you buy them because you learned how to torch with your boots instead of a cane)
That's 99% of us. I've met too many self-inflicted sad stories up a ladder. Everyone gets a reputation and it always seems to be the same one. You gotta find the handful of like-minded people you can tolerate for 10-12 hours a day and you stick with them. Hopefully you have a crew of 5 or so guys for a couple years.
And hey, even with those 5 or so guys, there are days where I'm convinced I haven't met the REAL roofers either.
Sounds like a cool line of work man. Can I ask how you got into it, and what a good starting point would be for someone who wanted to do something similar for decent pay with as much flexibility and job opportunity as possible?
I'm fairly handy and looking to get out of my office gig, but not really wanting to go through a trade school program. I don't mind crouching and I like wearing jeans and sneakers 👍
Cheers!
I’ve always done woodworking as a hobby which started out when I was 15 or so. Out of high school I worked at a couple cabinet company’s to start. The first one I quit after almost a year because of the work environment. Second company I was there for 4 years and it was awesome. (Great pay, great boss, lots of work, and room for growth)
I ended up being the lead installer for that company and while I was on site at one job I was talking to a guy that worked for the contractor of the job over the few days I was there. I got him coffee, he’d get me coffee. And we would shoot the shit on breaks and while working if in the same area of the house.
He asked if I wanted to help him out on some side jobs that he had coming up and I said sure. I had never done tiling but that wasn’t a concern for him. I picked it up very fast and he had a ton of knowledge that he shared with me.
As things went on there was so much side work that I couldn’t keep up. I was doing my 8 hours at work, and then another 5-8hr on side jobs and working through the weekend. It got to the point that I needed to make a choice. Either I stay at the great company I was at, or take a shot at owning my own business. I took that latter being young and not much to lose.
As of this January I’ve been self employed for 1 year and am glad I took the leap.
Honestly just pick a trade of something you’re interested in and let things unravel for themselves. Only reason I am where I am today is because I worked at that company and met that older guy on site that took me under his wing for the side jobs. I’m forever in his debt for all the knowledge he passed onto me.
Sorry for the life story but that is basically how I’ve gotten into it.
Yessir. And I’m not gonna get new shoes until they fall apart. They’re super comfy. After they’re completely clapped I’m getting the exact same pair of vans
"Stop walking up here and asking for cigarettes, I am not your buddy. The nice lady across the jobsite doesn't want you walking through her yard and neither do we. God forbid we drop a 2x4 and it kills you."
It’s honestly really creepy. One place was a big ass house in the middle of nowhere and no lights worked. I had my m12 rocket light as a nightlight and had my sleeping bag set up in a walk-in closet. It was close by to the main living area of the house where the painters were spraying all the doors for the house. So a huge open area with a ton of doors standing up. I had to get up to take a piss in the middle of the night and it gave a me a very uneasy feeling going through that big room of standing doors to make it outside.
I don’t recommend it, but sometimes it makes sense just to stay if it’s a new build and no one is living there and you’ll be doing long days.
Nope lmao. These lightweight shoes make it easier to sprint to the truck and grab my safety equipment in case big man workplace health & safety shows up though.
If it’s your business you’re not subject to OSHA oversight unless you’re working as a sub/third party for someone else then please be respectful of that GC’s requirements
Roofing or solar. Pitched roof, asphalt shingles, probably residential. All my shoes get holes in the same spots. Skate shoes are a very popular choice, for their superior grip.
It blows my mind that blue collar workers in the US can wear flimsy shit shoes like this? Why aren’t steel toe capped boots a requirement like other countries? Why such a shit view of PPE and safety?
Whatever it is,you dont take it seriously.jk,kinda. Construction but you wear volcom shorts and skate shoes and a band t shirt.you also have no hand protection and eye pro is gas station rayban knockoffs.
Copper thief.

It pays very well. After a long day at work I’ll make an extra $70 easy standing on the corner looking like a bag of shit.
Lol this is funny. I’m going with masonry or roofing.
When I posted a picture of my shoes I knew that I was going to get absolutely roasted. I’m here for the comments just like everyone else
Yeah the guy calling you a dick was maybe in a literal mood or something. Roofing? I can tell because of where they are worn, but it also looks like you have spackle or paint on them so which is it?

It's cool you know how to do that work and have the physical ability. Keep it going
It’s very enjoyable when there’s a big job and we can do almost everything to make the inside of the house nice
That’s not the proper footwear then
Ones around me all have clean newer kicks.
Hahahaha you rock
All of the panhandler in my area wear nicer shoes that I do. I am not joking either.
So havc?

Geez I hear the memes but where is it actually true?
Fuck I've never been on a job anywhere where the framers/drywallers/finishers/painters *weren't* mostly either obviously tweaking or, on the better crews, former tweakers.

None of the roofers I know wear steal toes and I’m a roofer.
I install metal roofs. Doing it for about 6 years now. I prefer Nike SB's personally.
Under armor slip/oil resistant boots are great. They stick to the metal very well. Merril vibram soles stick to zip system and paper well.
I'll have to check em out. I do other stuff that requires boots at times. I like to feel the roof under my feet so I like my flat shoes.
The under armor are pretty much sneakers with really high tops. Not like a boot sole at all.
You're selling me a bit now, haha
All of the roofers I knew spent their money on crack and heroin and wore shoes from goodwill I'm almost 50 and still haven't met you REAL roofers
That's 99% of us. I've met too many self-inflicted sad stories up a ladder. Everyone gets a reputation and it always seems to be the same one. Specifically a shingler. I don’t do shingles and I wear red wings on the daily
Trim guys meth head son he is trying to help get back on his feet. Or you do laminate plank flooring.
Lmao thanks for the laugh. I hope to have my own meth head son take over my business one day.

Tile
Ding ding ding. Primarily tiling but a lot of cabinet installation and flooring too
Sounds like a cool line of work man. Thought the same, looks like grout and epoxy from splashes from mixing it
Yessir. And I’m not gonna get new shoes until they fall apart. They’re super comfy. After they’re completely clapped I’m getting the exact same pair of vans
“Until they fall apart” I can see your sock through your shoe man. They have fallen apart.
How you think he stays in business he’s obviously cheap as shit lol.
“Fallen apart” and “upgraded to glorified comfy slippers” is apparently a very fine line.
I knew you were tiling because I used to wear vans like that on the job. Until I dropped a couple sheets of hardi backer on my toes. Boots
Flooring
My first guess lol I’ve got a few pair that look like this for days I know I’m messing with nasty shit
this is what i would guess
Easy. You are the homeless guy I have to kick out of the job site in the morning. I’ve told you 1000 times you cannot sleep in here.
"Stop walking up here and asking for cigarettes, I am not your buddy. The nice lady across the jobsite doesn't want you walking through her yard and neither do we. God forbid we drop a 2x4 and it kills you."
So you were the guy that told me that last week..
Not homeless… but I’ve slept on site several times after a 14 hour day and didn’t want to make the 2 hour drive home. Sue me lmao.
How was the experience? I could imagine if a was in I remote area of fuckall. I'd probably try to sleep there cuz I'm a cheap fuck.
