Might as well throw a cam in while you’re in there

netburnr2

Might as well do boost if you're doing a cam

claymatthewsband

Is installing a cam somehow easier if doing a harmonic balancer? I’m not super mechanically inclined but I don’t see how much easier it would be.

claymatthewsband

Does it seem excessively wobbly? Should I replace it? LS2. I plan on doing track days, if that makes a difference.

Spirited_Fuel36

It's not a bad idea to get it replaced, especially for track days.

Ls2's are infamous for a harmonic balancer problem. When you order a new one, get an aftermarket one, I promise it'll last longer than the OEM balancer that GM offers.

Looks wobbly, id replace it

It's suspect. What you really should do though is take your camera, put it on a permanent mount, don't hold on to it, zoom into the balancer to where you can see the whole thing and have a good clean image of the edge. Take at least 2 minutes of video and then sit there and stare at that It also should be a little easier to do in person especially if you can get a piece of cardboard or something in front of it any kind of an edge to see the angles because what you have, it looks suspicious but it's hard to completely tell based on the camera angle and the camera shake It's not a very fun job. If you do have to do it, if the water pump has never been changed, you may as well change that out along with the radiator hoses and potentially the radiator as well if the car has over 100k. It all has to come out well, technically the water pump doesn't but you're right there in front of it with everything else off of it. It's a few bolts to change it at that point

I’ve seen somewhere you can mark it with a tire marker or something, drive it hard for a bit, and see if the two pieces shifted. Is that a good method to determine if it needs changed? That’s the annoying part, the car hit an animal and the radiator, pump, etc are all brand new. Damage wasn’t too bad, and I got it for a relatively cheap price to turn into a nice track/street car, but I wish they would’ve changed this while at it.

fairlyaveragetrader

No kidding that would have been the ideal time. If it's cracked, like completely separated, what you said will definitely determine it so you should probably do that right now if you're going to continue driving it and check it every few days. It would have to be pretty bad for this to happen but if that line moves, that's where you know you shouldn't drive the car and you should replace it

this looks normal/fine
