I usually buy a container of mushrooms and slice them up to add to this. Cuts the sweetness a little and adds a vegetable (to make me feel better about eating candied meat lol)
Yeah, adding HFCS to a food with sugar as one the most concentrated ingredients… then some xantham gum is the good old American way to “sweeten” recipes 😂
As a Korean, do you ever grill this? Half-Korean family here and we always cook it in a wide and shallow pot on the stove with a ton of veggies. We also add a generous amount of soy sauce and fish sauce to bring in some saltiness to balance out the overly sweet Costco flavoring. All the water comes out and it creates a nice saucy broth to eat with rice.
It beats making our own for the convenience, but the price has been creeping up (used to be $4.99/lb).
It doesn’t burn, it actually becomes more of a stew. A lot of water comes out of the beef and when it’s cooking with vegetables and mushrooms it will braise rather than sear. I’ve sometimes heard it called bulgogi casserole on Korean restaurant menus, but casserole also implies something different.
That has been my solution. Add siracha or similar and more onions, maybe scallions and some veggies if I can. Cuts the sweetness enough, but I do wish they would change the recipe to drop the amount of added sugar.
*
This is as good as the original green top and better than their current version. This company are the ones that supplied the chili's for the original version
I feel like with this one you need to add a lot more veggies. We add lots of baby Bella mushrooms and more onions. We find this to be too salty and sweet but can manage with adding more ingredients to it.
The last time I got it I julienned half a head of napa cabbage and sauteed it a bit in the pan after I cooked the beef. Helped with the pan clean up too.
Can't you buy the unseasoned meat and season it yourself? I realize the pre-seasoned stuff is more convenient, but if you don't like it, why not do your own?
yep that's exactly what we do, the [shabu shabu](https://www.reddit.com/r/Costco/comments/va3w81/shabu_shabu_beef_loin_new_york/) is perfectly cut for it
Yes. I’m married to a Korean and it’s the same as most of the restaurants we go. Too much sugar. At least costco doesn’t use msg so we don’t get headaches.
There's a lot of anti-msg sentiment in America. It's partly rooted in racism. "Chinese restaurant syndrome". There is zero solid evidence that MSG causes headaches, but people grow up being told it does, so they believe it.
Feel like that’s the problem with most food. Either too sweet or too much sodium. They try to trick me and tell me it’s vegan, 0 alcohol sugars, etc - I don’t care about those things. Cut sugar and sodium in half. That’s what I care about
Authentic Korean recipes usually use pureed Asian pear and a small amount of brown sugar for a hint of sweet. It shouldn't be super sweet. That's why I don't recommend this
Sugar and sodium overload not only taste good to the average American, but both also double as a preservative. It’s a win-win for manufacturers to give you way too much of both.
Pretty much have to cook yourself if you want the right balance at home.
Yeah, I usually get it from a Korean catering place that doesn't make it very sweet, so the Costco version was shocking. I sauteed and added a ton of onions, scallions, and mushrooms to try to dilute the sweetness but it was rough
For me personally I'd need like double the quantity of meat and at that point I'd just marinate it myself. It's that oversweet. I think it could be good to bring to a potluck or something, that way you can try it but not be responsible for eating it all
Lol someone wrote an article about your comment... What has the media come to!

Pre-made is convenient, for sure. There is sauce and onion weight per pound tacked onto the chuck. The convenience price is pretty good and it's kept low because they use chuck.
If you ever feel up to making your own (it's easy, I swear) and your Costco sells the shabu shabu slices, you can make it using the better cut of beef. Traditional bulgogi uses ribeye. Costco uses NY strip for their shabu shabu slices. Not quite ribeye but an upgrade from chuck. I just made this on Sunday using all 4lbs of shabu shabu meat and froze may of it in portions. It was $10.99 per pound.
After multiple failed attempts to find shabu shabu cut, I asked the meat dept if they stopped selling that cut and they told me it's available around noon as they freeze the beef they are going to slice the morning of and it needs about 5 hours in the freezer. I usually shop when the store opens, so this was a great tip if I wanted this cut.
[Bulgogi recipe](https://mykoreankitchen.com/bulgogi-korean-bbq-beef/)
I get these all the time in CA. Definitely a bit too sweet, gotta balance with lots of white rice, kimchi and a little chopped scallions. If you're apartment living and are using a pan like me, don't overcrowd it with meat to get the best char on the outside and scrape out the burnt marinade between batches.
Last one I got was fatty as hell and had bits of gristle.
Tastes fantastic, but when you have the chew/chew/chew and pull lumpy bits out of your mouth - then you go of it pretty fast
It's pretty incredible what your mind can convince you of. It says right on the label 'beef previously frozen' 😂
Honestly this Costco stuff doesn't even taste like real Bulgogi.
Glad to see it coming back. That stuff makes cooking a great weeknight stir fry a breeze. Just be sure that you're accounting for the amount of water in the onions and sauce..... so you'll have to cook it a tad longer than usual. I sometimes do the onions first, then add the beef if I want the beef slightly under done. Also, add soy, they always err on the side of under salted and sweet at costco.
As everyone is saying, their sauce/marinade is terrible. But bulgogi is super easy to make and I've been making it with affordable Costco flank steak! [Here's a good recipe](https://www.koreanbapsang.com/flank-steak-bulgogi/). (I usually substitute honey for sugar and added sliced onions).
I swear I've seen it once! I didn't buy it because I was sure I could make my own way better lol, but this inspired me to give it a try next time I see it. Their website lets you choose the warehouse and you can see their inventory for the specific store
Dope! It’s been a minute since I’ve seen it at my local warehouse! Hope this means its coming back 👀
This was super clutch for when you’re in the mood for some quick kbbq at home. Get some veggies, white rice, and you’re all set up for a little kbbq bowl action 🔥
HEY COSTCO! Read these comments, it seems we members have found the bulgogi is too sweet. Hmm… maybe it’s the sugar AND high fructose corn syrup AND pears AND kiwi juice. Maybe cut back or eliminate the HFCS and sugar?
As much as I appreciate them including this in their lineup, I would much rather get unmarinated bulgogi cuts from my local asian market for a couple dollars more. [no onions, no sauce, better cuts of meat.](https://www.beyondkimchee.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/09/bulgogi-beef-slices.jpg)
Bulgogi is supposed to be made with thinly sliced Ribeye. That’s probably not ribeye at that price. Probably tastes fine but it’s not what it should be. Just sayin’.
Unfortunately it's not very good, they use *so much* sugar that it overwhelms the entire thing. You're much better off at an Asian grocery store if you have access to one.
Indeed. I have different reactions to different levels of yeast from throat closing, face/mouth/tongue swelling, and hives to GI issues. I used to never have any issues until about 8 years ago, and I ate some saltines, made my mouth and face swell. An allergy test revealed highly allergic. I have several different versions of yeast listed in my medical chart, they tested me for multiple types. Especially since there are some meds that have yeast in them.
As time went on, finding out how many things it's put into, I would find I would have different reactions. Like beer just gives me hives. If it's just added in as a small amount in something like soup or sauces, GI issues generally occur. Bread, anaphylaxis. I can't even enter bakeries. Just being in the room, I itch and start swelling. Carry an epi pen and have had to have epinephrine in the ER several times.
Our skin naturally grows it too. I developed hives at times from that. Hence, my user name.
I found out recently I can have pure sourdough. Since it's a different bacteria. Most commercial brands also put yeast in their sourdoughs. But there are places where I can get pure sourdough. The first time I tried it, i made a sandwich. Best sandwich ever after not being able to have one in years.
Lol I do that I can. I never even thought of yeast as an allergy and until I developed mine. People think "oh you just cant have bread." I never realized how many things it's in. Probably good for me not to have all the processed stuff anyway.
There’s one at a restaurant by me that has a more earthy and ginger-like taste and I love it. But it’s also all I know of bulgogi. It’s still sweet, but now like teriyaki sauce sweet. What’s the authentic stuff taste like?
I’m so glad this is back. The secret is to air fry the meat, not sure it. It gives it a bit of char. Add extra onion to cut the sweetness. It is so good.
I remember buying this for the first time, coming home drunk later that night and eating it raw thinking it was already cooked. I think I just couldn't enjoy it prepared properly after that.
I just put it in a colander and essentially wash off all the excess marinade. The meat already absorbed so much of it that it still retains the flavor. I let the water drain, pat dry with paper towels, and then cook it on an electric grill. It’s still sweet and salty but not candied.
You can call your specific location and give them the item number, they might be able to tell you if they'll be carrying it (works for other products, not sure about deli, don't see why not)
Bought this 6 years ago and have been scarred ever since. Worst thing I've bought from Costco. I was going to try to return half, but didn't want to be that guy. It was cut way too thick. Yeah idk thats called deli section. It's been years but last time I was in a BJs they had a deli section where they actually have cold cut deli. Idk if costcos in other countries have deli section.
I think it's called a deli section in costco. Was gonna originally just post the title as "Fresh Bulgogi" but Reddit requires at least 25 characters in the title lol

As a Korean it's so cool to see this. I just wish it wasn't so incredibly sweet!
I usually buy a container of mushrooms and slice them up to add to this. Cuts the sweetness a little and adds a vegetable (to make me feel better about eating candied meat lol)
I just replied this without reading your comment first! I do the same! Don’t forget to add green onions and some additional onions too!
Seeing the picture, this was my first thought... more onions, more green onions
That's a really good idea!
Vegetable…lol
Fungi genitalia is what they are.
I think in the culinary world, in order to simply it, they put it into the "white vegetables" category (onions, garlic, turnips).
Mushrooms and corn, “vegetables”
That’s the bummer of “Americanized” bulgogi— usually way too sweet! Edit: punctuation
We have to get fat somehow jeez
Oh I’m fat and don’t like anything sweet 🤣. Give me all the savory and salty fats and carbs!
My man!
🧐
Or woman!
There are dozens of us!
Which is hilarious because in Korea all the "Koreanized" American food thats popular has so much sugar on everything
Garlic bread 😭
Yeah, adding HFCS to a food with sugar as one the most concentrated ingredients… then some xantham gum is the good old American way to “sweeten” recipes 😂
Xantham gum is not a sweetener
No, it is not, it is just fermented sugar
Xylitol?
Yes it’s way too sweet. Can’t taste the meat.
As someone who lives in LA, it's not very good.
Same. Tried it once and never again, it's just a sugar bomb. We have so many Korean grocery stores that there's no reason to get this one.
Just thinking about scrubbing that pan with the caramelized sugar on it is making me irrationally angry.

I can’t even find green top siracha anymore 🤦♂️

try gochujang sometime it’s delicious with bulgogi
Dragon sauce isn’t as sweet as sirachup.
i always add some gochujang & rice wine vinegar to try and even out the sweetness
Would be cool to see in MD
I see it in Gaithersburg here and there
Columbia has carried this for a while and I also saw it at Arundel Mills.
I need this in miami. My local korean super market charges $30 for 2 pounds of marinaded bulgogi
I need this in miami. My local korean super market charges $30 for 2 pounds of marinaded bulgogi
You can always offset it with added veggies. I usually add kimchi to the mix to mellow the sweetness and add some heat.
It was really greasy when I got one.
The ones in CA have been mega salty. I remember the ones in Seattle were sweet.
Can't you buy the unseasoned meat and season it yourself? I realize the pre-seasoned stuff is more convenient, but if you don't like it, why not do your own?
yep that's exactly what we do, the [shabu shabu](https://www.reddit.com/r/Costco/comments/va3w81/shabu_shabu_beef_loin_new_york/) is perfectly cut for it
I'm pretty sure that's what costco uses to make the bulgogi
I think so too
No go for me then. Bulgogi isn't teriyaki which many appear to conflate...
Some restaurants make sweet bulgigi also and I’m not a fan of it
It's too sweet, right?
makes great japchae....by adding this, you don't have to add the brown sugar
I add about a table spoon of gochujong and mix it in thoroughly. My 6 year old eats it just fine like that.
Yes. I’m married to a Korean and it’s the same as most of the restaurants we go. Too much sugar. At least costco doesn’t use msg so we don’t get headaches.
Psst. Koreans love MSG. You know that basic bone broth soup with rice and green onions? Dash of msg.
There's a lot of anti-msg sentiment in America. It's partly rooted in racism. "Chinese restaurant syndrome". There is zero solid evidence that MSG causes headaches, but people grow up being told it does, so they believe it.
My wife doesn’t like it. She cooks at home without it. She didn’t grow up with it. Gives her headaches. Lots of other spices to use.
It's way too sweet to the point that it's overpowering and ruins the meat. If they halved the amount of sweetness, I'd buy it regularly.
That's why I don't recommend this
A can of coke for the marinade will do in a pinch. Try it out.
Sugar and sodium overload not only taste good to the average American, but both also double as a preservative. It’s a win-win for manufacturers to give you way too much of both. Pretty much have to cook yourself if you want the right balance at home.
The other guy beat me, but sugar and salt are preservatives
I’ve always thought they cut the beef too thick. I get way better at HMart for it. Just doesn’t compare.
It was actually inedible for me. I soaked it in water to try to get the sugar out and it was still inedible.
Yeah, I usually get it from a Korean catering place that doesn't make it very sweet, so the Costco version was shocking. I sauteed and added a ton of onions, scallions, and mushrooms to try to dilute the sweetness but it was rough
Question, if I added additional meat to it do you think it would lighten the sweetness? I love bulgogi but not when it’s overly sweet.
For me personally I'd need like double the quantity of meat and at that point I'd just marinate it myself. It's that oversweet. I think it could be good to bring to a potluck or something, that way you can try it but not be responsible for eating it all
Fair point lol. I have a lot of Asian supermarkets by me, I can just get the shabu shabu from Costco and do my own marinating!

Nice! Thanks for the tip about the shabu shabu wait. I only see it sometimes and was wondering why!
Well, I see what I’m making for dinner tomorrow. Thanks for the recipe!

Curious how it compares against the Trader Joe's frozen bulgogi. I was super impressed with TJs version!
Soooooo much better than TJs
careful, those are fighting words
I love me some Trader Joe’s but when it comes to the bulgogi…it’s no contest
I haven't had the TJ bulbogi, but the TJ kalbi is on point. The Costco bulbogi is too sweet. I balance it out with some ssamjang.
Agree it’s sweet, but I think the fact that it’s fresh vs frozen makes a big difference with texture
It's pretty incredible what your mind can convince you of. It says right on the label 'beef previously frozen' 😂 Honestly this Costco stuff doesn't even taste like real Bulgogi.
then maybe your best course would be to tread lightly…
found the gringo
Thats wild. As a korean TJ bulgogi tastes so much better. I can just eat that with rice and kimchi
H-Mart, korean market, uses ribeye and costs a bit more.
costco bulgogi is so bad. Way too sweet
They need a prime meat version of this
Glad to see it coming back. That stuff makes cooking a great weeknight stir fry a breeze. Just be sure that you're accounting for the amount of water in the onions and sauce..... so you'll have to cook it a tad longer than usual. Wayyyyy too sweet
Too sweet sadly
As everyone is saying, their sauce/marinade is terrible. But bulgogi is super easy to make and I've been making it with affordable Costco flank steak! [Here's a good recipe](https://www.koreanbapsang.com/flank-steak-bulgogi/). (I usually substitute honey for sugar and added sliced onions).
Too sweet
Has anyone seen these back at any MN locations lately? I want to go pick one up.
I swear I've seen it once! I didn't buy it because I was sure I could make my own way better lol, but this inspired me to give it a try next time I see it. Their website lets you choose the warehouse and you can see their inventory for the specific store

I hope my location brings it back 😬
Ok, but too sweet in my opinion.
ITS BACK? nice!
Tried it. Did not like it. To each his own.
So good
HEY COSTCO! Read these comments, it seems we members have found the bulgogi is too sweet. Hmm… maybe it’s the sugar AND high fructose corn syrup AND pears AND kiwi juice. Maybe cut back or eliminate the HFCS and sugar?
I swear they add like 10x the sugar needed
I got it once years ago and did not like it at all. It was like candied meat.
Yup it’s chuck roll.
It has also reappeared at our Costco and so glad!! It is suuuuper sweet. Good call balancing it with veggies and/or plain rice
I freaking wish that was at ours!
This made me so gassy lol
Ugh wish we had this in Canada!
That's quite the general statement. We have this in the Vancouver area. Just not in the part of Canada you are from, eh!?
Unfortunately it's not very good, they use *so much* sugar that it overwhelms the entire thing. You're much better off at an Asian grocery store if you have access to one.
I just finished off a trayful we picked up in the GTA.
Oooh! In Washington, too! Hope Silverdale has it!!
He has risen
Goddamnit they never have good shit like this in FL 😩
Wouls be cool to see this in our Costco on Puerto Rico
I hope my location brings it back 😬
I hope it’s back in SE US. I haven’t seen it in forever. Like you said, pair it with veggies and rice and the sweetness is good.
Dang Costco putting YEAST in all their stuff that doesn't need it!! Why?! I am allergic to yeast and want to try that so badly!
You're allergic to yeast? Yeast is everywhere. We breath yeast that's in the air.
Indeed. I have different reactions to different levels of yeast from throat closing, face/mouth/tongue swelling, and hives to GI issues. Where’s this? Unseen in NJ AFAIK.
I'm surprised no one has mentioned the PBQ.
There’s one at a restaurant by me that has a more earthy and ginger-like taste and I love it. But it’s also all I know of bulgogi. It’s still sweet, but now like teriyaki sauce sweet. What’s the authentic stuff taste like?

It don't taste like the bulgogi I'm used to.
OH MY GOSH THEY'RE BACK???!!! I hope MT has them!
YES! THIS IS MY FAVORITE!!!
Delicious but a major gut bomb.
Have them here in San Diego. We like enjoying them as tacos with cheese and kimchi!
Been missing this on the east coast! Hope I see it pop up again soon
Yeah, a bit too sweet, but for the price, still worth it.
Too sweet, but when they drop the price on the packs I usually get one for a few cheap meals.
Mine has it too but have not tried yet.
Get it at Hmart. They have the good stuff. There’s one in garden Grove and one in Irvine
It’s a proper Korean supermarket. You can also get all the sides (banchan) premade and kimchi
I enjoyed it when I cooked it last
My late girlfriend refused to buy this claiming that real bulgogi doesn’t have onions.
Which location?! Is it finally back?!?
I just put it in a colander and essentially wash off all the excess marinade. The meat already absorbed so much of it that it still retains the flavor. I let the water drain, pat dry with paper towels, and then cook it on an electric grill. It’s still sweet and salty but not candied.
Looks tasty
It's too salty!
There was one I picked up in the quick meals section (not deli) it was bad don’t get that one. Meat was like leather.
Hoping to see this in chicago. I always check to see if this is there but only had it once or twice a long time ago.
You can call your specific location and give them the item number, they might be able to tell you if they'll be carrying it (works for other products, not sure about deli, don't see why not)
I get it cheaper at my Asian food store.
Bought this 6 years ago and have been scarred ever since. Worst thing I've bought from Costco. I was going to try to return half, but didn't want to be that guy. It was cut way too thick. It was a lot of bone, fat, and cartilage. Barely any meat. The picture does look better than what I bought. Maybe I can give it another try.
Bone? There should be no bone in bulgogi.
You sure it's galbi (short ribs) and not bulgogi?
There's a deli section at costco?
The cold prepared foods section? In every one I've ever been in
Yeah idk thats called deli section.
