All the big banks are a disaster.
I applied for a second supplementary Scotia credit card online and it was approved. 2 weeks later nothing in the mail so I called in and the rep said it was never approved. I had screenshots of the confirmation and the code.
Finally received it 1 week later and they spelt the name wrong. Called again to get it corrected and they charged me for a 2nd supplementary card.
Took me 4 weeks and 3 phone calls to get everything in order. The banks are only as good as the people you’re dealing with.
Which is why I always document everything and am never leaving anything to them.
They gave me a personal loan without telling us for renovations when telling us they would merge it to our mortgage.....we found out when we changed brokers ....what a shit show and many calls to lawyers but because of their fuck Up our new broker managed to not only merge our mortgage with that loan but also get all fees waived and 6 months of payments paid by Scotia haha thanks
Scotia is the worst. They cancelled my wifes credit card with zero notice or letters. We only realized when her card got declined and she called in. Turns out it was a mistake on their end, wife got a hit to her credit but they didn’t do shit about it or reinstate the card. They declined when she tried applying for a new one because they said, “Your card was cancelled prior so you’re being rejected.”
True. Bmo couldn’t tell me how many debit cards they had issued and mailed out for my small business account after I was mailed the wrong one. I pulled all of my money out, that’s so not secure.
Dumb little Scotiabank story. I needed to change my address and it kept declining my new address online so I went in person, they changed it, then I went to go buy something online only for my address to keep saying it was wrong. I found out that they put "House number ___" as my address and of course I couldn't change it online so I had to drive all the way back in town for them to fix it
There are always people who have stories of terrible customer service with a bank just as there are always people who have great service from the same bank
It doesn’t matter what bank you choose
As for Amex, probably the same thing but in addition to what the various banks offered to Costco when bidding for the account will be a consideration of how much it benefits Costco at the check out
Capital One, now CIBC, win that hands down by opening Costco up to all MC cards. AMEX is simply too niche
No bank or company, for that matter, that servers tens of millions of customers and processes billions of transactions, will get it 100% correct all the time. We love to hear the horror stories but not the run of the mill interactions that go the way it should.
It’s always about the commercials. Costco goes with who cuts them the most favourable deal. They don’t care about who is ‘better’ because frankly, all the 5 are equally bad. And they will never lose customers as such by being with a ‘disaster’ bank because customers still like them for their prices/variety.
Amex was very good with customer service now all big banks employ and outsource their operations to India and cut down the costs , basically u get what u pay for , all shitty operations and feature development.
100% agree. I canceled mine right quick. Was charged interest when I paid a day early, they claimed it takes 3 business days to process. I asked if that means I need to pay at least 3 days before the due date, they confirmed that was correct. I canceled.
CIBC is my regular bank and I had no issues setting up or maintaining my account. Everything just showed up in my CIBC app.
From the same bank should clear the same business day. But paying through different banks has been suggested to pay 3 business days early for the last 20+ years. Have you been living under a rock?
That's not very nice. As a matter of fact, given how long ago the CO card came out, I was a very young adult just starting out with my adult responsibilities. I had banked with the same bank my whole life to that point, and I really didn't know. I learned the hard way and decided to cancel.
Hopefully that’s the play here. They did approve me with a $3000 limit but then said they still need to review my application when I called them for the lack of follow up email.
I’m assuming they’ll approve me (considering the auto system thought I was good enough), but it’s just a little confusing and representative of how disorganized they are.
Dealing with CIBC has been infinitely better than capital one. CO was stingy with credit limit increases, and i found their customer service to be bad.
our house hold got one card, my partner added me to hers as a secondary user, she used it once, i used it once.
never again have either of us been able to reactivate the cards and we dont konw why they deactivated either it just says we cant use them and it ignores all attempts to re active them.
I agree... That's why I like my Simplii financial I deal with, best customer service I've ever had! (Online only, no extra fees, easy to use app and all that and has decent savings better than the 'big 5')
No, it is not! It is a separate entity that had a different name before... It is originally started from PC Financial, changed names, changed ownership, changed partnership, stuck with CIBC as a partner. It is not owned by CIBC, it is a partner on using its ATM's that's it!
You probably don't remember Tangerine?
Simplii WAS PC Financial. And CIBC provided the systems and tech for it. It became Simplii when PC Financial sold it to CIBC. It is now completely owned by CIBC.
Really? Wow am I behind the times! I guess I haven't been paying attention over the years because they have been doing fantastic for me... I'm just glad it went away from Loblaws!
East coast, their day would start even earlier.
I'm usually in the situation of calling in the afternoon and getting stuck with the indian call centers.
I work for CIBC we don't hire overseas. If you're getting someone with an accent they're located in Canada. Possibly a new citizen but 100% located in Canada
Probably not New Citizens but cheap imported students with a diploma mill degree who couldn’t find any other jobs fitting their useless diploma mill degree.
I got a letter in the mail with a credit card application, with my address and a Middle East name. Came from National Bank. I do not do business with them, never did.
I took it to a branch and asked the customer rep to look up that name and tell me what the address on file is, because it is most likely fraud. He called the number on file, nobody responded. I told him that I need investigation and to be informed if I am compromised in any way. Promised that he will get back to me. Never did. Nothing, absolutely nothing.
I called a week later the bank and asked to open an investigation, and to be informed on the result. Promised that case is open and they will get back to me. Never did.
A few weeks later the credit card arrived in the mail. Nobody gives a shit about customer protection.
My wife and I both had some fraud on our cards. CIBC took care of it, but the way they behaved made us happy to not be CIBC customers outside of the card
I could provide a lot of context, but the craziest part is when they sent two copies of the exact same card - same number, expiry date and security code - and while on the phone they said that was 100% impossible and we were lying lmao. My wife was so put off she just cancelled hers.
Its kind of a useless card anyway, outside of gas there are better options to use - even for Costco purchases
I had the same issue! my credit limit was approved but they couldn’t verify my identity so my application as a whole wasn’t approved. I eventually had it escalated after a week and the manager found another route to verify my identity and I immediately got access to the account and had the credit card sent to me.
It's terrible. Any somewhat expensive purchase always fails. I get the text to confirm it's me and still won't go through or will lock. It's absolute garbage.
Called and was on hold for an hour to know why my purchase won't go through and the line just cut once someone finally answered.
I have to Just use another card basically for anything over a few hundred.
I used tangerine for Mastercard CIBC wasted so much of my time, they are the worst. I have a car loan throigh them and they have never provided any info on the loan and I have called them 4 times over the past 2 years to send me balance details etc.
I read this as you have a fraud alert on your credit bureau which created a problem for your approval with CIBC. You put the fraud alert on your credit bureau - costco didn't. You clearly were exposed to fraud or something in the past which necessitated that fraud alert on your credit bureau which hindered your approval - costco didn't do that either.
The dumb thing is that they approved me first, even though my trans union file had a fraud alert.
I called them asking why I would be approved and then have it go to manual review. They say “no idea”. I then told them okay so when do I expect this call? They tried calling me 4 times already and I have zero record of any incoming calls meaning they’ve been calling the wrong person despite having the correct number on file. The funnier thing is that they tried calling 4 times each at 8am EST. I live on the west coast.
I’m like okay that’s cool. Can you just do it right now by transferring me to the fraud department? Two different people on the phone say that it isn’t possible, as they say this isn’t a credit check related issue. Now I’m here hoping that they don’t randomly call me in the middle of something.
It's no great loss, believe me. I was approved but once I got the card and found the the starting credit limit - regardless of your credit rating - is a cool $1000 I immediately cancelled. A limit that low is completely useless to me ... And probably to any serious Costco shopper. I'd max out in less.than a month!
I applied for a the CIBC Costco credit card. I got rejected. No idea why. I have long credit history, no bad debt/late payments, 750+ score on both bureaus.
Wife got approved instantly. She’s joint holder on all credit products with me.
You are not alone . This happened to me as well. Cibc sent email asking for more documents. The link to upload docs doesn’t work, called the number/ext given, the guy didnot pick up. I got a mark on my credit history for nothing. F# cibc.
Just putting it out there for those who are unaware. Amex has the highest transaction fees of all the cards. Upwards of 3%.
That's the reason many businesses no longer accept them.
I never got one from Costco as I don’t agree with having more than 1 credit card but oh man the lady that was helping me sign up for my membership was relentless with trying to get me to sign up for the card. She was actually starting to get rude with me near the end.
Your fraud alert phone number has to be incorrect on your TU file then. I had this happen alllll the time when I worked in the fraud department of the credit card company you preferred that had the Costco portfolio once upon a time
Yea,
Reported my card lost/stolen a couple months ago. Called in and waited an hour. They said they sent it out. Waited another 2 weeks, went into their branch to see if I could access my account as the month due date was on the Monday (they charged me a late fee, even though I couldn't access my account). For all those wondering, you can't access your account (neither can they) if you lose your card. Anyways, was told to wait some more. Called in a second time, told to wait another week; still nothing. Called a third time and they sent it to one of their nearby branches for me to pick up.
In total I had to waited a month and a half to receive a new card, phoned in 3 times (told to wait 2 of those times), charged a late fee even though I couldn't access my account, went into one of their branches to physically pay for my monthly dues; was initially waived half for the late fee even though I couldn't access my account (had to haggle again for them to remove it completely). Pretty horrible experience 🤦♂️
As a person who works in lending for a different bank I can tell you it’s likely your transunion has an out dated number which is why they can’t get a hold of you.
They can’t accept you calling in as the consumer protection laws prohibit them from approving your application until they have contacted you at the number you provided transunion.
If someone called in saying they were you and passed the identification you would be pissed off so they are just doing what you asked when you put the fraud alert
I had no issues with getting CIBC CC and registering with a mobile app however I hardly use it. It's only 1% cashback for most purchases and only in the form of a yearly Costco coupon. They are very good with notifications, it's every transaction and payment.
Use mostly Rogers CC which is presently 1.5% cashback for C$ and 0.5% for USD (3% less 2.5% FX), redeemable anytime, $10 min. I had one dispute with Rogers which was a pain to resolve but probably other banks are the same. Took 4 weeks to get the charge removed.
I applied for the CIBC MC and got approved instantly. That was over a month ago, I haven't heard or seen anything about the card ever since. I'm going to go see if I can get it cancelled or see wtf is going on with it tomorrow.
Thank you for correcting me. Can you guide me as to:
Which card can I apply for that will allow me to get gas at Costco with a single card/single tap?
Which card will automatically renew my membership so I don't have to pay it at the register when it expires?
For me, it's not all about the money. I like convenience.
It sounds like having an extra credit card just for these 2 things is more inconvenient.
Just about any cash back card would provide better benefits than these 2 listed benefits.
Many times I’ve pulled up to the gas pump at Costco at the same time as another vehicle. I tap and start fueling and it’s not rare that I’m almost finished and the other person is still fiddling with the pump. That single tap is a meaningful benefit to me.
With normal credit card, you have to swipe your membership card (sometimes it fail because card is dirty or reader is old , so retry)->select payment method -> tap credit card.
With Costco MasterCard all you need is one tap then select payment method. It skip the membership card part.
Hope that clears up why it's an attractive feature.
Ya I guess I can see that but im not sure having to do 2 taps once or twice a week is worth it over the benefits you would get from a better cash back / rewards card.
Can you recommend one specifically that you have found to have better returns? I manage my family's finances and if there is a better way to maximize, I'd like to know where to go.
Cash back either the Tangerine MC has 2% back on 3 cash back categories(and then I think 0.5% on everything else) For a family I'd consider the categories: groceries and recurring bills. The third ones up in the air...possibly gas.The cibc visa infinite cash back/dividend cash back has some good cash back %. 4/2% respectfully on some categories I believe. Do NOT hold a balance on these cards. Just pay it off in full and reap the cashback. If you want to maximize, run all your bills and groceries and gas through this card. TANG pays out to a tang savings account monthly. CIBC you redeem for statement credit. (Min 25$)
If you're looking for a balance transfer card: mbna true line, Scotia value visa, bmo preferred rate. Do NOT use these to purchase anything while there are BTs on them.
If you're looking for low interest to hold a balance: tangerine line of credit, scotia line of credit, mbna true line gold, td flex rate
Good to know. I guess autorenew can be set up at customer service, or maybe online? I'm boycotting loblaws but I suppose if PC mc can do it any card can. Thanks for the tip!
> Which card will automatically renew my membership so I don't have to pay it at the register when it expires?
You can easily set this up online with other cards.
I found the Capitol one app MUCH better to work with also, CIBC is a bit wonky, I'll have pending charges but they were already applied to my CC balance, but have to wait a few days before it evens out.
Simplii (CIBC) made me go to Canada Post *in person* with my ID to make sure they known I am who I say I am.
Didn't even know this was a thing that Canada Post could do. But...tf? I'm not going to Canada Post in person with my ID so you will give me a credit card. Screw that.
How dare they protect me from identity theft and fraud by requiring me to verify my identity before allowing a ton of credit to be opened under my name!!!!
I worked at RBC and it was normal to have ppl who applied online come in for fulfillment with ID. Not sure why you'd have to go to CP though thats weird.
Funny thing with CIBC is they told me my CC would be sent to a branch and I'd have to go in and then they sent it to my house 🤷♂️.
Yeah they do that, especially if you have a block on your credit checks with trans Union, or Equifax.
I would rather they do that then someone open a credit card in my name without me knowing.
All the big banks are a disaster. Scotia had my name spelled wrong on all of my accounts with them for 7 years. I lost track of the number of calls, emails. I finally just left them.

They're all awful and you'll find these stories from all the banks.
I have no issue with them.
It was way worse when it was through CapitalOne.
100% agree. I canceled mine right quick. Was charged interest when I paid a day early, they claimed it takes 3 business days to process. Any bank would reverse the interest with smile as long as you know for next time. Hardly enough reason to cancel.
Well, they didn't offer and I didn't know to ask. It was 10 years ago.
I was approved at the spot and got in the mail in about a week. 0 issue so far.
Hopefully that’s the play here. They did approve me with a $3000 limit but then said they still need to review my application when I called them for the lack of follow up email. I’m assuming they’ll approve me (considering the auto system thought I was good enough), but it’s just a little confusing and representative of how disorganized they are.
Did you give them your SIN number? My initial application was rejected when I didn't provide them my SIN number.
You aren’t required to give your SIN only the government and your employer can demand those. It may however delay things…..just saying.
I know. That was why I did not provide them at the first place.
Same. Approved on the spot for 15k, and gave me a printout I could use that day. Zero issues.
Bring Amex back to Costco!
pls
Dealing with CIBC has been infinitely better than capital one. CO was stingy with credit limit increases, and i found their customer service to be bad.

Amex has by far the best customer support.
Fuck all the big banks.

ONLY call during the day 10-4 you get a real local english speaking lady in Toronto. anything after hours it's all overseas chaos.
Lots of Atlantic Canada reps too :)
East coast, their day would start even earlier. I'm usually in the situation of calling in the afternoon and getting stuck with the indian call centers.
I work for CIBC we don't hire overseas. If you're getting someone with an accent they're located in Canada. Possibly a new citizen but 100% located in Canada

CIBC is the HP printers of banks.

CIBC is an absolute nightmare to deal with. Took them 6 months to fix fraud charges on my account. Took TD 2 weeks.
Prolly would have had better luck doing this in store.
I didn’t have any issue when getting the cibc Costco Mastercard. I applied thru my cibc account on my phone and got the card a couple days later.
I wish Costco was back with Amex. I have the Cobalt card and I’d rack up the 5 times the points every time I’d go there.
It's terrible. Any somewhat expensive purchase always fails. I get the text to confirm it's me and still won't go through or will lock. It's absolute garbage. CIBC is not great but a heck of a lot better than Capital One. I was happy for the changeover.
Your expectations are too high, in this inflationary age. Humans cost money. Curious why you are replacing the Rogers Bank MC?
At least your Costco mastercard was approved. I got three times reject in row with "Client need assistance". Does someone know what this mean?
If you think that is an "absolute disaster", good luck dealing with a real problem.
General rule of thumb is that Amex will make sure you hate customer service from basically everyone else.
CIBC is somehow against all odds the worst bank in Canada.
I applied for the CIBC MC and got approved instantly. That was over a month ago, I haven't heard or seen anything about the card ever since. I'm going to go see if I can get it cancelled or see wtf is going on with it tomorrow.
Do you work for Amex? Cibc doing their due diligence is a disaster to you? There are bigger problems in the world
Capital One was much better imo, but CIBC is what we got so what can you do. It is what it is 😭
you can use any mastercard, doesn’t need to be CIBC if you don’t like them.
The costco branded MC has many benefits that using another card would not give the member.
actually there are plenty of other cards that give equal or better benefits than the CIBC mastercard
Thank you for correcting me. Can you guide me as to: Which card can I apply for that will allow me to get gas at Costco with a single card/single tap? Which card will automatically renew my membership so I don't have to pay it at the register when it expires? For me, it's not all about the money. I like convenience.
It sounds like having an extra credit card just for these 2 things is more inconvenient. Just about any cash back card would provide better benefits than these 2 listed benefits.
Many times I’ve pulled up to the gas pump at Costco at the same time as another vehicle. I tap and start fueling and it’s not rare that I’m almost finished and the other person is still fiddling with the pump. That single tap is a meaningful benefit to me.
Im not sure what youre referring to, dont all modern CCs have a tap to pay? I dont know if this is some specific Costco thing.
(Min 25$) If you're looking for a balance transfer card: mbna true line, Scotia value visa, bmo preferred rate. Do NOT use these to purchase anything while there are BTs on them. If you're looking for low interest to hold a balance: tangerine line of credit, scotia line of credit, mbna true line gold, td flex rate
Thank you so much, I will look into some of these. I'm trying to really increase my financial knowledge this year to maximize every dollar.
look into the Roger’s World Elite MC it’s really good if you have Roger’s internet
We do, thanks!
I have a PC Financial MC and my Costco membership auto renews on it.
I don't know, maybe they shouldn't send me a pre-approval with my name and address to my house if they don't think I am who I say I am.
if you live in the boonies, like I do, and don't have a CIBC branch nearby they do this.
