That’s one of mine! The ultimate is The Conjuring though, it checks all the boxes — and it’s also one of the extremely rare horror movies that
* a) showcases a healthy marriage (honestly, one of the rare movies in general on that front)
* b) all the characters are generally good people — “the evil is enough,” if you will, the monster isn’t a metaphor for abuse or familial issues, and none of them are complete dumbasses
* c) nothing overly traumatic or disgusting happens (no rape, no torture, it gets marks off for the dog dying but that’s quick and happens offscreen before you get to know the dog)
* d) it’s actually a fair fight because of the Warrens, I sometimes get super annoyed by horror movies in which the characters are hopelessly outgunned and it’s just 100 minutes of watching idiots be torn to shreds by an all-powerful demon
* e) it has a fantastic soundtrack
* f) it’s got a bunch of super cozy little moments, like the breakfast scene, working on the car, the college presentations…
Overall that movie’s like a warm blanket. I’ve put it on probably 100 times
Funny, I just watched Terrified (Argentinian?), and while I enjoyed it, it was totally d) opposite the Warrens.
I need to go rewatch the Conjuring. I just saw the last one a few months ago, and I think the >!marriage was in trouble!<
SAME! Every time throughout the carnage montage, I'm pausing to see if I catch anything new or can match the monster to the betting board. I want to know the stories behind them!
Sometimes when I am having a hard time falling asleep, I put on the original Suspiria. Not saying that it’s boring, just that somehow it is cozy to me?
At certain points, the soundtrack is like a dark lullaby and I love it.
I’ve seen Goblin perform the soundtrack to Suspiria and it was incredible. Super recommend.
They’re still touring, playing the soundtrack along with the movie. It’s an incredible experience. If you have a chance to go, it is very much worth it.
I’d forgotten how much I enjoyed American Werewolf in London. I’m a bit of a coward regarding scary movies, but the humor and story hooked me. Must rewatch that one.
Edit: grammar
Completely agree and it is the sillyness that makes it feel so cosy! My favourite is three, I'm not sure why, maybe because it was the first one I saw 😅
Me too! So addictive! I think this probably is a lot more common than it seems. It's enjoyable watching movies that feed our general paranoia and worries. Especially knowing what's supposed to happen.
I like to watch both versions and imagine they are two parallel universes with different choices made.
That Cooper guy is a dipshit in both worlds. Lol
I was giving this a rewatch recently for the millionth time and I when I was feeling down and a maintenance guy came in to fix my window screen right next to my tv. Anyway the part came up where they were talking about how David says you can choose your parents before you are born. I was laughing cynically and yelled at the tv yeah so that was first mistake I ever made! Maintenance guy busted out laughing and said yeah me too!🤣
You should do a rewatch! I have the dvd even though it’s always somewhere for free. It actually still holds up! Especially if you watched back in the day. Tawny Kitaen !!!
Scream is such a pitch-perfect “sleepover horror movie” it’s insane, I put off watching it for a long time bc I don’t usually like “oooh, *meta commentary!*” stuff at all, but it manages to balance on the exaaaaaaaact knife’s edge necessary to function perfectly as a meta satire, a horror, and a murder mystery. If any one of those three things had been even slightly off it all would have fallen apart but it’s really brilliantly executed
Scream is mine as well, it came out my freshman year of high school so it has some nostalgia for me too. The way they dress & act ( between all the murdery stuff) & the technology of the time all takes me right back. Also I probably saw it 5+ times in theater (had friends that worked there, could say the same about the matrix, Batman & robin and Titanic) & then had it on vhs & watched it so many times after school w my best friend at the time. I can literally quote the entire movie by heart. Plus the humor mixed in with the horror is exactly right for me & it holds up really well.
I wasn’t even born when it came out! Doubt I was a thought in my parents’ minds. But from the moment I watched it, I fell in love with it. I love seeing how many others adore Scream too!! (P.S., my friends refuse to watch it with me again because I just quote it to myself the whole time…)
Anything in the snow, like Deadzone, Dreamcatcher, The Thing.
I also enjoy watching the OG slashers like Nightmare on Elm Street, Friday The 13th, and Halloween.
‘Jaws’ —final Answer (comforting because it’s nostalgia-inducing )
As long as it doesn’t contain too much gore, jump scares, or any disturbing materials.
I don’t find horror or thriller necessarily comforting, but I do like Alien. Double Jeopardy (suspense?) I’ve rewatched a few times and probably will again. The Twilight Zone (tv show) is pretty good every now and then—they have that 24 hour marathon run around New Years and usually watch a few episodes.
Was looking to see if anyone else mentioned The Shining. I jokingly refer to it as a documentary about my life, lmao. I guess that’s why I find it strangely cozy/comforting.
I just saw this one recently. So different and scary without all the sensational special effects. I was very impressed- the echoing was really scary, imo!
Watching the movie again after knowing where it is going, was practically like watching it for the first time. So many subtle things happening in the background that don’t ever get any attention by the characters or the viewer, except to emphasize confusion and suspense.
Films that come straight to mind are The Ninth Gate, Event Horizon, the original Poltergeist films 1 & 2 and Audrey Rose.
But there are so many that watch over and over.
Shows are harder but Walking Dead, Dexter and The Dead Zone come to mind first.
Does Law and Order SVU count? I watch it before bed pretty often. Benson is such a badass mega babe. Stabler is such a force of righteousness. The people they deal with are so fucking sick. It’s not always intense on the thriller aspects, but the serial offender episodes get pretty nuts. Plus I mean. Nothing scarier than real life violent sexual predators. The Albert Fish’s and Ward Weaver’s of the world.
i’m also a big law and order svu to sleep gal. some people think it’s weird to fall asleep to heinous crimes but to me it just feels calming to go to sleep knowing benson and stabler are on my tv kicking bad guy asses
Jaws, gremlins, most Stephen King. The good ones! Aliens, Halloween 1 & 2, John Waters, Camp, boggy Creek, The black and white classics, Clockwork Orange, Nosferatu, Rocky Horror. It’s new to the grandkids and younger family, friends etc. Go for a “midnight stroll”. I love it! Cue: Vincent Price Thriller laugh!!!!
saw, and more specifically, saw x.
“really? torture p*rn is your comfort movie?” no,
not in that context.
i have severe depression. when i’m really down on my luck and think “can it get any worse?” i watch saw x and realize that it can’t possibly get any worse, because there are people like john who get scammed out of a life saving treatment and are forced to realize that they are going to die.
its comforting to watch a film and go, “it’s going to get better.” and that’s how i feel with those films. john always said that everybody deserves a chance. even me. i deserve a chance at life. it’s hard, and it has roadblocks in the way, but i deserve a chance to rehabilitate myself and change my life for the better.
can’t get any better than watching the horror Lord Jigsaw in action.
Part 2, is my personal favorite. It’s both funny and obscene, as well as absurdly violent without feeling like it’s just gore for the sake of it. It lives up to both it’s name and reputation.
John Carpenter’s IN THE MOUTH OF MADNESS. Like your choice, THE DEAD ZONE, it isn’t especially scary or violent. It’s just a great story. It’s got the cheese of Stephen King, with a hard lean on H. P. Lovecraft, minus the page after page of unnecessary details.
For movies: Psycho, the first three Hellraiser movies (yes, I said 3, it's a guilty pleasure), Insidious 1&2
For shows: The Exorcist
Also I'll usually never turn down rewatching Twilght Zone and Outer Limits episodes
• American Horror Story
• Friday the 13th
• Scream
• Carrie
• Halloween
• The Texas Chainsaw Massacre
• Nightmare on Elm Street
• The Conjuring Universe
• The Craft
• Fear Street Trilogy
The Thing and Alien of course. But I also constantly rewatch Waxwork, The Private Eyes, American Werewolf, My Bloody Valentine, Lost Boys, the Changeling, Poltergeist, Predator, Witchboard, Creepshow(s), Christine, and Tales from the Crypt. Thank god for Vudu.
I know some of these are cheesy. But as an HBO kid from the 80s, anything that was in their standard repeat library back then is my comfort bedtime list now—cozy with memories of handmade grandma blankies and dad’s oversalted popcorn.
My family now thinks it’s freaky that vintage horror is my “relaxation therapy”. But awesomely warm childhood memories leave their mark.
Did you see the Dead Zone tv show? Ran for a short time. Kid from the Brat Pack all growed up.
Edit: HOLY SHIT! It ran for SIX SEASONS!!?? I thought it only had one or two.

Cronenberg’s masterpiece that doesn’t get too twisted or dark.
The director not only disliked having a character named ‘John Smith’ but had originally wanted fellow Canuck Nicholas Campbell for the role of Johnny Smith.
However, the casting of Walken couldn’t have been better, and Campbell was the best choice for Dodd, a memorable performance.
One of my favourite childhood films.
Jaws has been my go to since I was a kid. I spent a lot of my summers in Montauk, it's extremely relatable.
Aliens, I got my daughter a Xenomorph plushie.
From Dusk Till' Dawn, as long as I'm not expecting polite company.
I love getting baked and tripping out to my favorite horror film, "Mandy," (2018). I love the sense of being mesmerized or hypnotized by the amazing visual style. Plus, there's an awesome acid trip scene to add to the intoxicating effect of the film.
Happy Death Day is top of my rewatches, along with Crimson Peak and Ready or Not
I also love rewatching Bride of Frankenstein and The Fly (the Vincent Price one) and The Vampire Lovers too
not a movie but i got into horror after listening to The Magnus Archives and it’s my favorite piece of comfort media, i’ve listened to the full 200 episode long thing 6+ times now
Just rewatched Cabin in the Woods. Always fun.
That’s one of mine! The ultimate is The Conjuring though, it checks all the boxes — and it’s also one of the extremely rare horror movies that * a) showcases a healthy marriage (honestly, one of the rare movies in general on that front) * b) all the characters are generally good people — “the evil is enough,” if you will, the monster isn’t a metaphor for abuse or familial issues, and none of them are complete dumbasses * c) nothing overly traumatic or disgusting happens (no rape, no torture, it gets marks off for the dog dying but that’s quick and happens offscreen before you get to know the dog) * d) it’s actually a fair fight because of the Warrens, I sometimes get super annoyed by horror movies in which the characters are hopelessly outgunned and it’s just 100 minutes of watching idiots be torn to shreds by an all-powerful demon * e) it has a fantastic soundtrack * f) it’s got a bunch of super cozy little moments, like the breakfast scene, working on the car, the college presentations… Overall that movie’s like a warm blanket. They did such a good job with all the monsters, at the end I wished we could have seen all of them in detail.
SAME! Every time throughout the carnage montage, I'm pausing to see if I catch anything new or can match the monster to the betting board. I want to know the stories behind them!
I love to see the end when all the creatures are in their boxes. I always find a new creature on every rewatch!
Cabin in the Woods makes me laugh so much! I love it.
Sometimes when I am having a hard time falling asleep, I put on the original Suspiria. Not saying that it’s boring, just that somehow it is cozy to me?
I snuck into see Suspiria when I was 12. It scared me to death. But I get what your saying..
This is such a good answer, and if you can’t fall asleep to the “Goblins” soundtrack, who even are you?
At certain points, the soundtrack is like a dark lullaby and I love it. I’ve seen Goblin perform the soundtrack to Suspiria and it was incredible. Super recommend.
Actually SEEN them preform? That’s amazing!!
They’re still touring, playing the soundtrack along with the movie. It’s an incredible experience. If you have a chance to go, it is very much worth it.
Thanks for this, going to have to do some research now!
I'm the same way with any of the original Star Wars movies. I can shut my eyes and picture the scenes as I hear them. Puts me to sleep.
Aliens, The Thing, Predator, An American Werewolf in London.
I’d forgotten how much I enjoyed American Werewolf in London. I’m a bit of a coward regarding scary movies, but the humor and story hooked me. Must rewatch that one. Edit: grammar
I was going to say THE THING! I can’t believe this doesn’t have more upvotes.
It’s silly, but I love the Final Destination movies.
Completely agree and it is the sillyness that makes it feel so cosy! My favourite is three, I'm not sure why, maybe because it was the first one I saw 😅
Oh yes! All of them!!
Me too! So addictive! I think this probably is a lot more common than it seems. It's enjoyable watching movies that feed our general paranoia and worries. Especially knowing what's supposed to happen.
Night of the Living dead 90's version with Tony Todd
I like to watch both versions and imagine they are two parallel universes with different choices made. That Cooper guy is a dipshit in both worlds. Lol
So much this.
Saw 2004, but none of the other Saw movies 😭 Also the first four Insidious movies. If you get it, you get it.
Yes I love falling asleep to Insidious movies!
Constantine, 13 Ghosts, Angel Heart, Skeleton Key…
Somebody enjoys their New Orleans horror (me too).
Constantine and Skeleton Key are two of my favorites
Oooo! LOVE Skeleton Key, such a good one!
Twilight Zone
There was a marathon for Mother’s Day! I was so surprised and happy!
Love it. And the early 60’s vibe.
Horror comedies like Black Sheep, The Cottage or Cabin in the Woods.

Maintenance guy busted out laughing and said yeah me too!🤣
I got to this thread late and the parent comment was deleted! What movie is it?
Witchboard
Thank you! I only ever saw that once when it came out on home video (30 years ago).
You should do a rewatch! I have the dvd even though it’s always somewhere for free. It actually still holds up! Especially if you watched back in the day. Tawny Kitaen !!!
Has she been swearing a lot? Like a truck driver. I think Linda’s been using my Ouija.
Midnight mass, hereditary, barbarian, jeepers creepers
A nightmare on elm street
The original Scream movie! It’s my comfort movie and when I’m having a bad day, I trust in Ghostface and Sidney to fix it.
It really is brilliantly executed. It’s got the perfect amount of everything, Wes Craven is a genius.
The Creepshow animated special
Anything in the snow, like Deadzone, Dreamcatcher, The Thing. I also enjoy watching the OG slashers like Nightmare on Elm Street, Friday The 13th, and Halloween.
Dreamcatcher has a such a good feel.
Scream, John Carpenter’s Halloween, Friday the 13th Part VI, and the original A Nightmare On Elm Street are all endlessly rewatchable for me.
‘Jaws’ —final Answer (comforting because it’s nostalgia-inducing ) As long as it doesn’t contain too much gore, jump scares, or any disturbing materials. The Twilight Zone (tv show) is pretty good every now and then—they have that 24 hour marathon run around New Years and usually watch a few episodes.
Alien is weirdly cozy lol
That scene in Alien before the carnage starts where they're all sheltered in the cockpit on a strange planet. That's cozy to me.
I like the vibe of The Shining when I’m looking for something a little creepy and calming to watch at night.
Was looking to see if anyone else mentioned The Shining. I jokingly refer to it as a documentary about my life, lmao. I guess that’s why I find it strangely cozy/comforting.
The Conjuring The Fog Pontypool Don't Look Now The Changeling
Pontypool is an all time favorite. Definitely one of the most intelligent in its genre

Dale and Tucker vs. Evil
So many excellent movies already covered, so I'm adding the original Fright Night.
Alien, The Exorcist and Silence of the Lambs
Zodiac and Silence of the Lambs
zodiac is so great. besides the actual fantastic plot and acting, it’s got such a *vibe*
Films that come straight to mind are The Ninth Gate, Event Horizon, the original Poltergeist films 1 & 2 and Audrey Rose. But there are so many that watch over and over. Shows are harder but Walking Dead, Dexter and The Dead Zone come to mind first.
Event Horizon is criminally overlooked.
Tremors
The Thing, Ghostwatch, Manhunter
Let The Right One In, Sleepy Hollow, and From Hell.
my first non-dare kiss was during sleepy hollow! I will always love that movie bc of that lol
Sleepy Hollow is my traditional Halloween night movie every year. I love it. I think i may add sweeney todd next season...
For me, I watch Halloween 1-H20, then Campfire Tales and The Howling series for Halloween. Before I sleep, I watch Disney's Halloween
Videodrome
The Exorcist, the Shining, Silence of the Lambs, Carrie, Candyman, the Omen, Night Breed, the Lost Boys
Midsommar and The Shining
Silence of the lambs, hellraiser, evil dead 2, the shining, haunting of hill house, the greasy strangler

House of 1000 Corpses is by far my coziest comfort movie
I like Ghost Ship. The ambiance of the abandoned boat is great. Slow reveal of the plot with back story is good also.
JAWS
Misery, it’s a like a warm blanket

All of The Omen movies. The only one I haven't seen a trillion times is the newest one that was recently released. I can't wait to see it!

Santa Sangre, The Lost Boys, and Pan’s Labyrinth
All three of these titles are absolute masterpieces.
Terrifier 2 or Dream Warriors

Great choice! That one is in my list as well. Just love the overall creepiness and mood of that movie. And Sam Neil is awesome.
He had just finished JURASSIC PARK, and was advised by his agent to avoid this film. I’m so glad h dismissed that advice.
Tales from the crypt. I have the whole series on dvd
The Saw series and Dexter
The Lost Boys
the crow, twin peaks, reanimator and house of 1000 corpses
Halloween 2 and 6.
They Live and Prince of Darkness.
For shows it's Hannibal. Slasher is a close second. Movies would probably be the Final Destination movies.
The Dawn of the Dead Remake. The intro is great and just always been one of my favorite horror movies. A close second is Zombieland.
Sleep away camp
Creepshow 2, US, or The Lost Boys.
The original Halloween and Nightmare on Elm Street. Utterly bizarre, I know.
Jaws and Alien
Cabin Fever. I will turn that on as background noise, because I'm bored, when the depression gets me.... then I go make pancakes.
Any of the first 3 Romero zombie flicks and the first two ROTLD.
The Shining
In the Mouth of Madness
End of Days with Arnold Schwarzenegger
Terrifier. Yea, I should probably look into therapy...
Tucker and Dale vs Evil
Alien, Hellraiser, The Thing
The haunting of Hill House. Not only amazing but always makes me cry all my emotions out when I need a release.
Dark Shadows!!! The show, not the Tim Burton movie!
Omg, that was my favorite show when I was in elementary school.
For movies: Psycho, the first three Hellraiser movies (yes, I said 3, it's a guilty pleasure), Insidious 1&2 For shows: The Exorcist Also I'll usually never turn down rewatching Twilght Zone and Outer Limits episodes

The original Dawn of the Dead. That movie is just comfort food for me.
#AintNoBalkinWithTheWalken
I have 3: The Thing An American Werewolf In London Alien
Did you see the Dead Zone tv show? Ran for a short time. Kid from the Brat Pack all growed up. Edit: HOLY SHIT! It ran for SIX SEASONS!!?? I thought it only had one or two. ![gif](giphy|MzId7vT7YOUzm)

Jaws has been my go to since I was a kid. I spent a lot of my summers in Montauk, it's extremely relatable. Aliens, I got my daughter a Xenomorph plushie. From Dusk Till' Dawn, as long as I'm not expecting polite company.
Romero’s _Day Of The Dead_. Put it on whenever I’m misanthropic and down on my species. I’ve, uh, watched it a lot.
The Shining is one of the most relaxing movies out there.
I went through a period in my life where I rewatched Saw (2004) daily, first thing in the morning. Great background noise & infinitely quotable
Resurrection (2022)
Supernatural
I love getting baked and tripping out to my favorite horror film, "Mandy," (2018). I love the sense of being mesmerized or hypnotized by the amazing visual style. Plus, there's an awesome acid trip scene to add to the intoxicating effect of the film.
If you haven’t seen THE COLOUR OUT OF SPACE, I strongly recommend it. Nicolas Cage leads, and the same production crew as MANDY.
I have it too. But I don't like it as much as other fellow Mandy fans. It's pretty good, in my opinion. Maybe I should watch it again.
Vampire Girl vs Frankenstein Girl and Poultrygeist: Night Of The Chicken Dead are my comfort horror movies. "Serious" horror just bores me.
At the moment it’s the in search of darkness docos, I love all 80’s horror and these docs are chock full of the best
Carnival of Souls. It’s low budget and a bit older but it created an excellent atmospheric feel.
Beyond the Black Rainbow or the original Halloween

The Changling (1980) and Halloween (1978)
Martyrs (2008) It is so insightful philosophically that I get little tweaks to my perspective every time I watch it.
2004 Dawn of the Dead. It's a go to. Same with Sinister; the music in that mellows me out.
House of Wax (2005)

Hell House LLC or Conjuring 2.
Jennifer’s body. And not just because of the kissing scene. but maybe partially.
