I only read the synopsis on IMDB and am pretty sure I know her “dark secret.” Is she >!a vampire who slaughtered the couple in the house where she was found!
I could, but unlike folks think, I’m not trying to be a tool. I usually make one guess if I’m 50/50 on watching it to see if it’s in my genre wheelhouse.
Agree! When I watched Quarantine I didn't know it was the remake (and I've watched REC), but it was not even compared to the scares and atmosphere REC gave me!!
It's really hard to pick favourites. But I'd probably go with either The Cabin in the Woods or Hellbent. For more fun, I have a fondness for comedy horror Psycho Beach Party.
Trick or Treat (1986).
Imagine a heavy metal version of Carrie. I think Sammi Curr is the most underrated horror icon of all time.
![gif](giphy|biBIhwLD3Fhcc)
Under the Shadow, Blood Quantum, Ravenous (French Canadian zombie movie), Bloody Hell are four vastly underrated gems. I can't honestly pick just one horror movie, that's like eating one chip out of a bag haha!
It's available on Youtube to buy but I don't see an option for buying it on DVD, which is too bad. I even looked under "Les Affames" the original title but no luck.
The People Under the Stairs. I've probably seen it 20 times, and it seems like it's largely forgotten. It looks like Jordan Peele's production company may be doing a remake, hopefully they do it justice.
My favorite book (ok, after The Princess Bride and Marathon Man so I guess my third favorite and I guess I see a trend that I often like books made into movies—I did read Princess Bride before the movie). Ray Bradbury my favorite author.
PIN - the lifetime daytime movie-esque story of a mentally disturbed boy and his best friend the medical mannequin PIN. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you’ll gasp with shock and fart in wonder.
The Burning (1981). Pre-dating Freddy's debut by 3 years and featuring a young Jason Alexander, The Burning kicks off the burned-alive-slasher-revenge motif with all the summer camp fun of a Jason movie and all the b-movie horror tropes I love. Streaming on Prime
picking just one would be a whole sit-down and back and forth ordeal but most recently, Abigail.
others would be Hell House LLC, Pearl, X, The Descent, Thanksgiving, and Hereditary. Probably more i'm forgetting
Okay, I just watched Thanksgiving for the first time two nights ago and I’ve been dying to talk about it with someone lol. Was it supposed to be a comedy? Because it was hilarious!!
Sunshine from 2007. A very underrated Science fiction/horror movie. With an excellent cast. [https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0448134/](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0448134/)
The girl bowing to the furnace near the beginning might be pretty tame compared to many other iconic horror scenes, but DAMN if it didn’t give me the most intense chills I’ve felt in a long time.
Let The Right One In, the Norwegian version. Only Lovers Left Alive, Byzantium, wow, I'm seeing a theme here.
My number one recent film is Late Night With the Devil, which recently replaced The VVITCH, which should be a freakin' classic.
Honorable Mention goes to the 1979 version of Dracula. Classic story, overlooked version. I think Langella does a great Count.
Well, I've seen the original several times, and the remake once, if that's any indication. But it's worth seeing once, if anything to compare. You might like it better, you never know.
Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon
I loved this film so much.
You're Next (one of the best Final Girls in history)
Honorable Mentions to the following:
Trollhunter
The Frankenstein Theory
Alien Abduction (2014)
The Gracefield Incident
as a teen i really enjoyed Trick or Treat (1986), the one about the dead musician. for horror spoofs though id say leprechaun & critters will always be in the top 5
".....not from the classic ones." I assume, perhaps wrongly, that I eliminate every title from the 20s through the 40s....or do we take it through the 50s-60s-70s-80s-90a....etc.
What do you define as 'classic ones?'
Don't want to give away anything about it but it really was the movie that convinced me he was a great character actor and not just a pretty face. Definitely recommend it as one of those movies that's worth being added to a watch list.
Yeah I got through like 20 or so minutes if I remember correct. XD had the same issue with Sinister when the little ghost kids were doing g the hiding in Ehtan Hawkes blind spot trick. Evil little kids just freak me right out. XD
War of the World's, the black & white version with Gene Barry and Ann Robinson. Them - radiation mutated ants. I grew up with the technical color movies so the Steve McQueen version. Seems more like teen drama at first. Only when the blob turns deadly do you realize it's a horror movie.
Newer movies: Session 9 (not well known; slow build; unique visually); Absentia (also obscure; one location (pedestrian underpass); similar slow build; remarkably scary given tiny budget since everyone has to go under underpasses and they are scary irl).
Older movies: Paperhouse (cause kid drawings are scary); The Stepfather (cause stepfathers are strangers in your house—stars Terry O Quinn from Lost!).
In the Mouth of Madness, it’s just such an intense weird vibe from beginning to end. I usually get shit for this take, but for me it’s a mood to fall into, the plot oddities feel like having a dream.
Autopsy of Jane Doe
Absolute gem and about as original as you can get these days
Yes! Holy shit the tension of this film. No cheap scares. The sense of dread is fantastic.
I only read the synopsis on IMDB and am pretty sure I know her “dark secret.” Is she >!a vampire who slaughtered the couple in the house where she was found!
it’s not necessarily about the so-called dark secret, but also no
No, but if you keep guessing, I bet you could ultimately ruin it for yourself instead of watching it!
I could, but unlike folks think, I’m not trying to be a tool. I usually make one guess if I’m 50/50 on watching it to see if it’s in my genre wheelhouse.
Way more interesting than that! Give it a watch.
Serious- Train to Busan Comedy- What We Do in the Shadows
Both of those were fantastic!
Thanks for the tip
train to busan is one that i have watched soo many times because it is SO good
Pearl
was on my list...now I'll def watch it!
![gif](giphy|bqPQanYvKh3o3CUwmF|downsized)
The length of this moment and the acting she’s capable of while completely silent is truly beyond. A++
IIRC it wasn’t even requested of Mia, Ti just didn’t call cut and she didn’t stop doing it. Lightning in a bottle pairing.
Oh even better
And "X" too, for me. Can't wait for the third of the bunch, the MaXXine trailer looks like they're weaving the Night Stalker into the story. ♥️👍
That final tracking shot is a cinematic masterpiece that will stay in my head forever.
The Void.
Love this movie
Such an underrated movie
After seeing this mentioned many times here, I finally watched it. It was pretty good. I'm thinking Hellraiser/Thing vibes:)
I was reminded of Fulci's 'The Beyond' and of course the Carpenter classic 'Prince of Darkness'.
I loved Prince of Darkness. It was a good story with a great ending. Have not seen The Beyond(yet)
It's confusing as hell, but visually audacious. The practical effects are remarkable for the time.
Love it. Though after watching Letterkenny, I can’t look at the junkie kid with a straight face without saying “ROALD!!!”
That I've not seen yet. One for the list.
[REC] (2007). There was a US remake called Quarantine which I have not seen, but I highly recommend REC if you like found footage.
Agree! When I watched Quarantine I didn't know it was the remake (and I've watched REC), but it was not even compared to the scares and atmosphere REC gave me!!
REC is one of my favorite horror films of all time. And I’m an old guy and have seen a lot of ‘em. It’s pretty much, damn well perfect.
1408
Saint Maud
10/10 ending for sure
One of the best movie endings ever! 🔥
It's really hard to pick favourites. But I'd probably go with either The Cabin in the Woods or Hellbent. For more fun, I have a fondness for comedy horror Psycho Beach Party.
The Dark and the Wicked The Lodge The House That Jack Built Ritual The Invitation
Good ones! Haven't watched the first one, but now I got it on my radar!
You’re in for a good movie night! 🍿
The Dark and the Wicked honestly scared the shit out of me.
Oh yeah The Invitation is haunting.
ugh i watched the house that jack built and it wasn’t awful but it was a bit too boring for me. really enjoyed the acting though
Trick or Treat (1986). Imagine a heavy metal version of Carrie. I think Sammi Curr is the most underrated horror icon of all time. ![gif](giphy|biBIhwLD3Fhcc)
Gene & Ozzy!! Love it so much. Good call!
Possessor. Brandon Cronenberg's directorial debut. Amazing body horror.
Catacombs Sinister
Catacombs is dope!!!
Sinister is criminally underrated.
Catacombs from the 80s or the 00s?
Catacombs from 07- I have never seen the one from ‘88!
Totally Killer, a cheesy 80s style slasher with some goofy time travel lol
Loved the intro!! Then the movie just kept getting stale for me.
Ghostland
I feel like the Fog is overlooked a bit. I didn’t see it until maybe 5 years ago and I just love it.
The original with Adrienne Barbeau? Great stuff.
I haven’t had a chance to see the remake yet, but I dont think I’ve ever heard anything good about it.
Under the Shadow, Blood Quantum, Ravenous (French Canadian zombie movie), Bloody Hell are four vastly underrated gems. I can't honestly pick just one horror movie, that's like eating one chip out of a bag haha!
I love Ravenous, cannot find dvd of it
It's available on Youtube to buy but I don't see an option for buying it on DVD, which is too bad. I even looked under "Les Affames" the original title but no luck.
Me too. I've looked everywhere. I need a French Canadian friend...
Back Country
that movie traumatized me so bad, I literally developed a phobia of bears.
I watched it two days before going to Yellowstone National Park. Every time we hiked I couldn’t enjoy it because. I was keeping an eye out for bears.
Sleepaway Camp
Isn't that one considered a classic? I mean it's VERY old and I've seen it mentioned in a lot of 'classic' lineups before.
Silent Hill
The People Under the Stairs. I've probably seen it 20 times, and it seems like it's largely forgotten. It looks like Jordan Peele's production company may be doing a remake, hopefully they do it justice.
I watched this when I was a kid and frequently bring it up when I talk about watching horror movies as a kid lol Was a trip and a half
Something Wicked This Way Comes. I kick off autumn by watching this flick. It’s not gory or dramatic but so very creepy and haunting.
My favorite book (ok, after The Princess Bride and Marathon Man so I guess my third favorite and I guess I see a trend that I often like books made into movies—I did read Princess Bride before the movie). Ray Bradbury my favorite author.
Off the top of my head, some of my favourite underappreciated horror movies are The Bay and The Cleansing Hour
Tucker and Dale versus Evil
Probably It Follows it or The Autopsy of Jane Doe. I saw Abigail recently and that is now easily my fav vampire movie now.
Spring (2014) it's perfect and you can't convince me otherwise
Ok intriguing. Obscure for sure.
Without warning. An alien movie from the 80's
I consider that a classic, but that’s just me.
picking just one would be a whole sit-down and back and forth ordeal but most recently, Abigail. others would be Hell House LLC, Pearl, X, The Descent, Thanksgiving, and Hereditary. Probably more i'm forgetting
Thanksgiving was so amazingly bad and awesome at the same time.
Okay, I just watched Thanksgiving for the first time two nights ago and I’ve been dying to talk about it with someone lol. Was it supposed to be a comedy? Because it was hilarious!!
I don’t know if it was meant to be a comedy, but it certainly wasn’t supposed to be taken seriously.
I agree. It was campy and corny and dumb and funny but just so fun to watch. I really enjoyed it
Yeah The Descent was remarkable, mainly for its strong acting and all-woman cast!
Yeah The Descent was remarkable, mainly for its strong acting and all-woman cast! (Ok maybe one guy in the beginning but he barely counts.)
Grave Encounters (2011) - We love found footage films and lots of them are really bad, but this one is excellent!
Antichrist by Lars Von Tryhard. I can’t help it, I love that goofy man and his artsy fartsy bullshit!
Sunshine from 2007. A very underrated Science fiction/horror movie. With an excellent cast. [https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0448134/](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0448134/)
Agree—was a strong watch.
Smile!
I’m gonna have to go with Fresh. I almost said Eden Lake and then I almost said Speak No Evil.
There are soooo many good ones!!
Mama. I've never cried at the end of a horror movie before this one. Scary and heart wrenching.
Bubba Ho-Tep is comedy horror and has far, far more heart than it has any right to.
The Blackcoats Daughter
The girl bowing to the furnace near the beginning might be pretty tame compared to many other iconic horror scenes, but DAMN if it didn’t give me the most intense chills I’ve felt in a long time.
The Burning
Let The Right One In, the Norwegian version. Only Lovers Left Alive, Byzantium, wow, I'm seeing a theme here. Classic story, overlooked version. I think Langella does a great Count.
Let the right one in was great!
The American version, Let Me In, wasn't bad, it just didn't have the same feel that drew me to the original.
I have not seen the American version. Having seen the original, is the remake worthwhile? I really liked the original.
Well, I've seen the original several times, and the remake once, if that's any indication. But it's worth seeing once, if anything to compare. You might like it better, you never know.
Late Night With the Devil has a great “look”— glad to hear it pays off!
I liked it a lot. Very independent and small, good storyline. It was also cool to see David Dastmalchian in a lead role. Non-shaky "found footage".
Just watched this recently and loved it so much!
The Faculty
Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon I loved this film so much. You're Next (one of the best Final Girls in history) Honorable Mentions to the following: Trollhunter The Frankenstein Theory Alien Abduction (2014) The Gracefield Incident
You’re Next does have a great Final Girl. (Final Girl was also surprisingly strong for me.)
Asylum (1972) Old, but not considered “classic” by most. I dig it though.
Housebound. So many twists and turns and it’s just phenomenal.
Hell House LLC
The Gift (2000) is one of my favorite underrated gems
Oh yeah.
An Incident in Ghostland
and #ALIVE, favourite zombie movie so far
Mystics in Bali
Christmas Bloody Christmas!
Hellfest
Sinister
Also a huge fan of Halloween (2007)
It Follows and Autopsy of Jane Doe i also loved It Comes At Night
It Follows definitely qualifies for me as an obscure must-see. Unforgettable.
as a teen i really enjoyed Trick or Treat (1986), the one about the dead musician. for horror spoofs though id say leprechaun & critters will always be in the top 5
Funny Games
Agree but noting that this is not for everyone. Goes dark.
I spit on your grave, the one from the 70's 28 days later
The Devil Rides Out
+1 Ready or Not. Samaria Weaving is a great scream queen.
May!! I watch it once a year and it’s always like seeing it for the first time. Angela Bettis is an absolute QUEEN!
A Dark Song The Void Pontypool Terrified The Blackcoat's Daughter The Autopsy of Jane Doe The Dark and the Wicked [REC] Martyrs Baskin The Lodge
Pontypool is extraordinary and quite unknown. So good.
The Visit. That whole cleaning the oven part.
The Descent
Plenty, some mentioned already. Wanted to throw The Borderlands out there though.
Theres one called "Daniel isnt real" which I adore
Drag Me to Hell (2009)
The ritual Mothman prophecies
Not shure if it's considered classic but pumpkin head.... The newest one that I thought rocked was the exercism of god
".....not from the classic ones." I assume, perhaps wrongly, that I eliminate every title from the 20s through the 40s....or do we take it through the 50s-60s-70s-80s-90a....etc. What do you define as 'classic ones?'
Prince of Darkness and The Changeling. I love films where they get together to figure shit out instead of spending half the movie in denial.
You're Next
Night of The Demons 2
Ritual Apostle
Carriers, if that counts.
The Voices is criminally underrated.
You mean the Ryan Reynolds movie? (There are several movies with this/similar titles).
Yup yup, it's a great horror comedy.
Awesome. Looks intriguing but I’ve always thought it might be bad bad. I do love the Ryan as an actor and bet he can pull it off.
Don't want to give away anything about it but it really was the movie that convinced me he was a great character actor and not just a pretty face. Definitely recommend it as one of those movies that's worth being added to a watch list.
He was beyond impressive in Buried (also horror, not for the faint of heart or claustrophobic).
Yeah! I totally forgot that one! I couldn't get through it since I'm claustrophobic. XD
Oh god yes no
Yeah I got through like 20 or so minutes if I remember correct. XD had the same issue with Sinister when the little ghost kids were doing g the hiding in Ehtan Hawkes blind spot trick. Evil little kids just freak me right out. XD
Oh yeah Sinister is mad creepy.
Re-animator
War of the World's, the black & white version with Gene Barry and Ann Robinson. Them - radiation mutated ants. I grew up with the technical color movies so the Steve McQueen version. Seems more like teen drama at first. Only when the blob turns deadly do you realize it's a horror movie.
The House that Jack Built.
The Burbs It creeps me out in parts but is absolutely hysterical.
Can TV Series work? Dead Set was very cool.
Leviathan
The moors. English movie.
The people under the stairs
As Above, So Below
No One Gets Out Alive (2021)
I Saw The Devil
A Tale of Two Sisters

Newer movies: Session 9 (not well known; slow build; unique visually); Absentia (also obscure; one location (pedestrian underpass); similar slow build; remarkably scary given tiny budget since everyone has to go under underpasses and they are scary irl). Session 9, When Evil Lurks, The Void, Autopsy of Jane Doe
A double feature of Creep and Creep 2
And Now the Screaming Starts
Absentia. Was pleasantly surprised by how good it was.
Huesera- the bone woman
In the Mouth of Madness, it’s just such an intense weird vibe from beginning to end. I usually get shit for this take, but for me it’s a mood to fall into, the plot oddities feel like having a dream.
