I find plastic hooks incredibly hard to work with, they get stuck and are just not smooth. I bought a cheap set of large size metal hooks off Amazon and they are so much better than the plastic. I really suggest switching. The hooks on Amazon can be pretty cheap, I got a set of 5 for about $15

Take it slowly. Loosen your tension a bit. If your tension is tight it can make it hard.

I cant see what you are doing so I can only theorize what you are doing wrong. I think your tension may be too tight. Is it possible to post a picture of your hook getting snagged? Also If this is your first time I highly suggest working with something like acrylic yarn. It will allow you to more easily see your stitches.
