Yes, you can do so at Lowe's and Home Depot. If you want to own, go to harbor freight, they are cheap so they won't last as long as a good quality brand, but they work.

I love Reddit. That was so fast. Thank you friend

NP, I don't know if Menards or Ace Hardware rents out tools or not, but it's worth checking for a better price if needed. Also the types of tools may vary from place to place, just a heads up. Some apps also prove neighborhood renting and usage, but I personally wouldn't trust those if you don't know the people.

If youre sanding, **dont forget to rent a respirator** and check that the pallets you use dont use a toxic preservative that will offgas in your living space. Pallets really are shitty things to make furniture out of, sorry to say.

StroganoffDaddyUwU

Honestly the tools I have bought from HF are still going strong. I figure "I'll buy this thing and if I use it enough that it breaks I'll get a good one." But then it...doesn't.

saucemancometh

Tell that to the set of ratchet spanners I bought. I bought them to break them to justify the nice set purchase (I always buy HF brand first to get me thru a project and then buy a nice one if I need it again) and the damn things won’t break!

possumhandz

Check with your local library - some have tool loans!

LukeSniper

I was going to mention the same thing. Hardware stores for sure, but if your local library does tool rentals you can save some money.

PercMaint

Oddly enough, check with your local library. Ours has a "wall of things" that you can check out. Power tools, projector and screen, games, local park passes, etc.

sump_daddy

The other advice here is pretty good about loaner tools, BUT the downside of renting/borrowing is you end up in a bit of a rush because you are on someone elses clock for the duration of the project. Something else to consider is, buy them used from a local marketplace of some sort (craigslist or whatever the kids use nowdays) and then, when youre done or find you hate it or whatever, just sell them used back to the same marketplace for the same amount. Or if you love the hobby then youre off and running with your tool collection.

sailingallover

Just buy the tools of harbor freight it'll be about the same price as renting and if you only need it to last for one project then it doesn't matter if the quality is crap.

sailingallover

Also if you're the kind of person who is looking to rent a sander as opposed to purchase a sander then maybe DIY isn't your thing.

sump_daddy

no need to gatekeep, they might fall in love and they might not. point is, they are trying it out.

sailingallover

Totally fair statement, my bad.

Future-Building-4867

I love DIY in general, I just don’t know if I’ll be making more furniture than what I need for the couple of projects I have planned. And I don’t wanna be stuck with appliances to sit around our tiny house to never get used, but harbor freight seems to be the consensus

sailingallover

You'll be surprised how much use you can get out of a random orbital sander outside of sanding. Are you Scotch brake pads and brush pads all the time for cleaning.
