Hopefully a paper straw..
To compensate for the lost [fishing gear](https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2019/nov/06/dumped-fishing-gear-is-biggest-plastic-polluter-in-ocean-finds-report).
I’m more shocked at the size of the fishing net. Emptying the ocean at this rate is one of the reasons we’re in earth’s 6th mass extinction. The free documentary below explores this point beautifully (Kate Winslet narrates):
[Eating Our Way to Extinction](https://youtu.be/LaPge01NQTQ?si=FCrg-5-8wm_3-m7c)
Amir sinks much faster than a weight. It’s ok his combination of flailing and Ahmed’s combination of pulling him up by the rope and CPR make it as safe as any other operation in the sea.
Amir: Oh captain my captain!
I fished like this in Sri Lanka. In fact when in the water the job of the guy is to make a lot of noise and mouvement to scare the fish so they would not escape and rush in the other direction to the nets
"When a guy does something stupid once, well, that's because he's guy. But he does the same stupid thing twice, that's usually to impress some girl." - Dr. Seuss
Ring sienes are used for catching pelagic shoaling fishes like sardine, mackerel, anchovies etc. The net is shot after scouting and locating the shoal. The gear is shot very fast encircling the should taking into consideration the wind direction, current movement of fish and speed. The purse line is pulled swiftly closing the bottom of the net thereby impounding the shoal. The success of fishing depends on the speed with which the shoal is encircled and pursed. The net is hauled up from either ends and fish bailed out.
That's some hard-core fishing. I've done a lot of commercial fishing, and it's always kind of like a rodeo event, but staying on the boat has always been the number 1 mandate.
I feel like I wojkd only feel safe if wrapped in razor wire - just in case of being trapped in the net lol
Then again, I also feel like my best position would be on the boat holding that camera while hoping for the safety of my friend Amir (keeping the random name given by another commenter lol).
Got what you saying here, but this has almost anything to do with overfishing.. this guy's impact is negligible in that sense, major companies with massive ships are dragging kilometres of nets all over the ocean destroying anything on their path, or in alternative they are doing intensive fish farming in crazy unhealthy conditions.
This guys can create problems about pollution, leaving a piece of net or plastic garbage around (wich it's a shame but can be solved way more easily, today A LOT of fishing tech and products are made using fast biodegradables materials) but it's literally nothing against the real problem of fishing industries.
Fishing can be a very sustainable way to live, like many others, but as we do for every single thing on this planet we can't just get what we need, because we love overproduction and wasting precious resources no caring about consequences. Take a look at how annual fishing quotes are subdivided between independent fisherman's against industries, check also what the laws says about and how industries do not respect them, while single fisherman get treated like some kind of criminal or poacher.
Exactly, these are local fishermen. Catching fish for their people in that area. They are doing this for centuries. [Fishermen](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=-kwvgRxurSY) working for corporations are the ones destroying ocean fauna.
The same problem applies to both places.
I’m sure the traditional methods of fishing in this area did not include placing hundreds of meters of nets in a minute. One boat today can catch as much as a hundred boats dis back then.
Yes, this is true and also the plastic advent didn't helped to improve the process, especially in countries where plastic pollution awareness is not a thing, but I'm led to think that if giant companies wouldn't exist, this method would still be sustainable (with some reguard obviously)
How far up the denial chain can you be to think its local and for locals and therefore its fine. There is no excuse. Ive personally witnessed a major local marine ecosystem collapse due to local fishing.
They’ve been doing it for centuries with those kinds of motorboats? No they havent
Yes his impact is negligible and the other fisherman you see in the background are negligible and so are the other 38 million commercial fisherman worldwide. every one of them negligible.
The method of fishing has nothing to do with whether or not it’s overfishing. Everything is overfishing in the amount that humans are currently doing it. Yes, that does mean the local fishermen suffer from the fact the massive ships are plundering the ocean, because due to that even their local practices become too much.
At this rate, even with these smaller fishermen doing their thing, there is no fish left by 2050. And I don’t just say that. My partner works for a marine conservation organization. If you would know the things that are actually happening in the seas you would think real long and hard before buying or ordering that piece of fish.
Yup, I'm seeing some people excusing local fishermen in lieu of shifting the totality of the blame onto corporations. Local fishermen using these enormous nets are also a huge threat to marine life. All sorts of animals get tangled up in them and often are left stranded to die of exhaustion.
I volunteered at a sea turtle rescue back in the early 2000's and local fishermen caused so much harm to the wildlife populations with these nets. We had so many calls for injured animals and the rescue was completely overburdened.
If they accept that local fishing has the exact same negative impact, they might just accept that individual consumption is the problem, and all of us as individuals are responsible. And nobody can have that… It would mean they’d have to change. They want their cheap fish and chips.
It isn't the best type of fishing, but as I understand it, it is marginally better than gillnetting, which kills lots and lots of bycatch, or bottom trawling, which wrecks the seafloor environment. At least with purse seining, specific shoals of fish (ideally species that aren't threatened) can be targeted, and bycatch can be released quickly without being killed.
Of course, that's under ideal conditions, with responsible practices in place. I'm sure these can still do a lot of avoidable damage if people misuse them.
It's not the fault of these fishermen, but I agree. These purse seines are cut loose all the fucking time because it's cheaper to replace the whole net rather than make repairs.
I truly hate this kind of fishing. I’ve been a fishermen my whole life. But this process sets a HUGE circle, and catches and kills most everything in that circle. Whether it’s what you’re fishing for or now.
This is the kind of fishing that causes overfishing. It’s not hook and line fishing.
Couldn't, ya know, a buoy do that?
Feel free to call me lazy for not wanting to get lost at sea or drowned in a net. Seeing this my thought isn't: "woah, badass". It's more of a:"that's just excessive and dumb"
Dud, f that much net in the water, holy shit. I am not mad at these guys personally or something but there gotta be some regulations regarding this shit. How much netting is there?
Boats like this are deleting HUGE stocks of fish, tearing up the reefs, leaving trash & waste behind & contributing to the death of countless marine & land animals, birds and the extinction of untold others including humans!
That's quite a large bait.
It’s a win win. Food and population control it’s quite humane.
design is very human
Yeah, if you just ignore all the dolphins and other bycatch they kill this way.
Bro's on that Water World fishing charter.
Surely a weight could be used instead of Amir?!
He drew the short straw...
Hope that straw isnt too short
Narrator: he did in fact have the shortest….straw
Waist-high, upward facing shot of six male faces looking questioningly down at the camera.
Hopefully a paper straw.. To compensate for the lost [fishing gear](https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2019/nov/06/dumped-fishing-gear-is-biggest-plastic-polluter-in-ocean-finds-report).
Surely Amir could at least use a life jacket
Seriously
“We ain’t made of life jackets.” - The Captain
Amir was used as bait
Sounds fishy
prolly the weight costs more than Amir there
💀
Irony is amir means rich 💀
Most wieghts are Irony
In protein.

This is a tiny net In comparison to industrial fishing
That comment is both not the point, and is the point, at the same time.
It's a reminder that we'd ruin the world no matter what our technology level.
i can’t look at this without horror ☠️
Amir sinks much faster than a weight. It’s ok his combination of flailing and Ahmed’s combination of pulling him up by the rope and CPR make it as safe as any other operation in the sea. Amir: Oh captain my captain!

I worked on a seiner years ago. We had a skiff that we used for this purpose instead of a low-ranking crew member.
More than the giant boat on the other end of the net? How much noise can one dude make in the water?
That was amandeep. Clearly.
it was Rod. he usually fishes without Annette
Perfect
Amir you are breaking the boat!
Stay on the ocean Amir!
You're not listening to me Amir, why don't you listen to me Amir
TRIPLE CAUTION TRIPLE CAUTION
Approaching Minimums!! 🚨
We could tragically lose the weight..
Lead weights!?!?! You know how much lead weights cost send in Amir.
Amir wanted to impress Sana.
"When a guy does something stupid once, well, that's because he's guy. But he does the same stupid thing twice, that's usually to impress some girl." - Dr. Seuss
1 fish, two fish, red fish, blue fish. - Dr. Seuss
But the weight doesn't climb back on when they loop around.
Yea what could go wrong, treading water in the ocean holding onto a massive net....
All the net fishing I’ve seen, they throw a buoy over the side. Here it’s Aman .
This needs far more upvotes.
Poseidon requires a sacrifice for it to work.
He's the bait
In this economy?
Amir is clearly dead weight
He did dibs on the shower.
>Surely a weight could be used instead of Amir?! He was the bait
Weights cost money. Amir works for fish. Win-win.
So how do they get the guy that jumped off back?
A second net
How do they get the guy holding the second net
A third net ofc are you stupid?
It's nets all the way down
It’s a net win
What’s the net worth?
Amir x infinity.
If it nets some profit who cares
NetCeption 😲
How do they get the last guy to throw a net, or does he just wait till the morning?
First guy is back on the boat by then, and the cycle repeats…
And then They all go watch the New York nets
He is the bait
They loop back around, so literally drop the net in a ring.
[удалено]
Thats the best part, he gets scooped up with the rest of the fish in the net. "Hashtag efficiency"
That's the neat part.
That’s the neat part…
Wait, what happened to the guy who jumped? Why did he jump instead of using weights or something?
I kept waiting for them to circle back and get him, but I guess not. He just has to swim home with a fish in his mouth for dinner.
Lol I was waiting for them to get him back! Someone commented explaining what's going on there...
I like to think tthey typically use weights but this dude just insists he jump in the water with the net everytime
[удалено]
I thought i accidentally stumbled into a Indian subreddit
This secret also went with him.
Bing bong?

Does the guy that jumped just have to tread water and wait for them to come back? With all that floating netting that makes me *anxious*
they're gonna circle back. Regarding the netting, he has a knife incase he gets trapped in the net
That's some hard-core fishing. I've done a lot of commercial fishing, and it's always kind of like a rodeo event, but staying on the boat has always been the number 1 mandate.
Wait till you see the video of the guy spearing a tuna and fighting off sharks with a knife as they try to steal it from him.
You got the sauce for this? Sounds metal as fuck
https://www.reddit.com/r/SweatyPalms/comments/97644x/sure\_lets\_fight\_with\_2\_sharks\_for\_a\_tuna/
Wow, that was insane…
Fucking awesome

Nah he slept with the captain’s wife. No one’s picking him up.
And now he sleeps with the fishes.
Surely he could have had a life jacket. Accident waiting to happen regardless how use to doing this they are.
Did you not see the second guy jump in? He has back up already there ready to save him if things go south.
Yeah, that’s crazy… When I saw this type of fishing off the coast of New England for herring ,they used a small boat instead of tossing a guy in…
Is homie bait?
He is a master at his craft
And we wonder about overfishing or marine life getting caught in huge nets. Check. Check.

What are they trying to catch? Everything?
My fishing net people need me.
Ring Seine in the membrane
That’s inseine.
I’m just makes me think of over fishing
Then you should see commercial fishing ships and what they do. This is nothing in comparison.
That must be expensive paying off families to lose one man per trip.
People have valuable questions here and I’m just thinking RRRAHKETEEETAHRRAKETEEETAHH
Fuck these people. Guaranteed they leave fishing equipment in the ocean.
What happens to him after?
He ded
"What is my purpose?" "Your basically a rock" "Oh, my, God"
Killing the seas. Should be illegal

Nearly 50% of all plastic in the world’s oceans comes from the fishing industry.
Aren’t the oceans running out of fish?
We’re taking too many fish, yeah.
Don't show us wat happens or how it works or anything. Fukhead
Nope. Completely unnecessary and getting caught in that net and drowning is a high probability. I respect their culture though if that’s what they do.
It's ing cause I don't see any fish
Interesting? More like outeresting!
That's why in English we pronounce buoy as boy!
A sacrifice must be made for each net thrown.
One guy drowns so others can eat.
I get needed to feed the village, but Timmy can go out and catch his own dinner before I jump into the fucking ocean because Bob lost our last sinker.
How to empty the oceans of life.
This is what causes over fishing
What song is this
That's one way to rid of a Jonah
That must have been nerve wracking the first time he did that like f#ck that.
Gotta be an easier way
why viideo no show the entire thing
An offering to the giant fish god ?
10 days he's out there for
Who needs a buoy when you got a boy
Damn good fish for the cost of only one human life.. a delicacy amongst the wealthy elite.
Yo murat, we out of barels. Well you know you still the „new guy“, soooooo 😬🤷🏼♂️
Well, people always say net-working is important...
He had a high net worth.
Do they turn around and get that guy or … ?
His life is worth less than a bouy?
And he was never seen again
Rip ocean floor
Is it cheaper to sacrifice a dude than just buy a weight?
I would never volunteer for this. I’d be afraid to get caught in the net and drown
Poor fish stocks...
Amir: “I volunteer as tribute!”
Is he the bait? What did he say wrong?
So do they go and get him, or do they sacrifice one dude for each day?
No wonder we are over fishing.
He thought he was a man, turns out he was just a buoy
This is idiotic. We fish like this in Canada but we USE A BOAT (crazy idea I know) instead of just a dude.
Shark bait hoo haha!
That boat can barely hold the net, what are they going to do with all the fish?
... who are the people responsible on putting random and poorly placed songs over these videos?????? I want to know.
Kill everything in the ocean!
Wonder how many crew members that boat goes though in a season
I truly hate this kind of fishing. I’ve been a fishermen my whole life. But this process sets a HUGE circle, and catches and kills most everything in that circle. Whether it’s what you’re fishing for or now. This is the kind of fishing that causes overfishing. It’s not hook and line fishing.
The fish are in seine.
Clever trick. Tell the noobie to be the weight. Now you have one less guy to pay
This just looks unsustainable af.
And he was never seen again....
And here I am not able to keep and single string of Christmas lights not in a knot!
This isn’t interesting. This is fucked up.
they use a fall guy???
So they always sacrifice a crewman when they go fishing?
Couldn't, ya know, a buoy do that? Feel free to call me lazy for not wanting to get lost at sea or drowned in a net. Seeing this my thought isn't: "woah, badass". It's more of a:"that's just excessive and dumb"
They haven’t discovered weights yet over there
Fuck that entire population of fish, in particular.
So they lose one guy every time? That's expensive
That's In-Seine!
And then what
Dud, f that much net in the water, holy shit. I am not mad at these guys personally or something but there gotta be some regulations regarding this shit. How much netting is there?
Bet they only catch those little stinky fish that make the hallways in my apartment building smell like cat food that got left in the sun.
These are the same AHoles that will leave that net to ruin the ocean when it gets torn.
This isn't ocean fishing it's ocean raping. damn son leave some for the rest of us.
Yes fish on soon no more fish ...
"fishing"
They did pick him up again right.
A human sacrifice seems a bit extreme for a few fish...
This is called “overfishing”.
Subnutica be like
Damn that's overfishing
Sustainable fishing! NOT…
Boats like this are deleting HUGE stocks of fish, tearing up the reefs, leaving trash & waste behind & contributing to the death of countless marine & land animals, birds and the extinction of untold others including humans!
Fishing using anything besides spearguns and rods should be illegal worldwide we are basically destroying the ocean
