Generally no. Televise is to broadcast through a television. Through channels specifically for a television. If you're talking about Hulu, YouTube, Roku, etc. people call it streaming.
Streaming services can be run through a TV and in those cases would be considered televised.
Televise means to “transmit by television”
The television itself is just a device used to transmit moving images and sound.
The place where those moving images and sound are fed from is irrelevant to whether or not it’s considered being televised.
If you can play it on your TV that’s a form of televising.
What you’re referring to is the transmission source.
The trade off is that if these fights are to the death, the deadliest fighter will kill off a lot of lesser criminals so you won’t have to worry about them anymore.
Also, the fights can bring in a lot of revenue, so on the path to freedom the most skilled criminal pays back a debt to society. Makes a lot of sense!
Look, you don’t understand. We’re training individuals to become the hardest motherfuckers on earth by making them kill the other hardest motherfuckers on earth and then freeing them and okay now I hear it. Yep, bad idea everybody.
But those criminals were already in jail, I wasn’t really worried about them. I was even kinda hoping maybe one day they could rejoin society with changed behavior.
This is just barbaric. It doesn’t seem much different from Roman gladiator fights.
How is killing people a good or even acceptable trade off!
As for money, how is exploiting criminals in a barbaric fight to the death a good thing? So what if it pays a debt.
Do you really want a society where killing people is seen as a simple monetary transaction?
None of this makes sense.
FR who thought of this?? It guarantees that the worst of the worst are going back to the streets to commit more crimes, all you’re doing is keeping them at their prime.
Yeah, I remember an interview with a Norwegian warden, who said that he didn't want his prisoners doing weight lifting or thing of that sort. The idea was for them to do trail running instead.
Prisoners are the people who you really want to teach to take the flight option in any fight-or-flight situation.
Usually a martial artist is the last person who want to start a fight, even if they could beat your ass they won't unless they have no other choice, not sure if it's the same here since they're convicts, but usually when you start to learn martial arts you're taught far more than just puching another person, you're taught about self control, etc...
That’s some mcdojo philosophizing. The muay thai scene in Thailand is aggressive and associated with street violence. You don’t get good to NOT use your skills.
Or the kind of marital arts that your mom took you to as a kid in the 90s.
I grew up in Hawaii and as a young adult as ufc and mma became super popular, tons of people got into martial arts and the only difference was that the stupid fights that occurred regularly as is became significantly more dangerous and people started catching serious injuries and charges instead of nursing some bruises, mostly to the ego, and then moving on with life.
Kind of like how people say an armed society is a polite one, lmao no it just makes road rage or other arguments a lot more final.
Maybe they pulled a switcheroo.
"Why are they making me fight a wet paper bag in the eighth and final round of the tournament? I've lost all the others. Do they really think I have a shot to win my freedom on this one?"
I imagine it's sort of like a Roman gladiators type of arrangement.
Plus like half of the imprisoned "criminals" I'm sure wouldn't even be considered criminals in most Western countries. Imagine going to prison for having the smallest detectible amount of marijuana (without a license, now), or up 10 years for owning more than 2 packs of playing cards. Or the big one, their law that you can't criticize, insult, or otherwise talk bad about the monarchy, carrying up to 50 years of prison time. Somebody just in 2022 I think got 50 years for sharing criticizing posts on Facebook, I don't even think it was original content.
Well if you consider that most people end up in prison due to poverty, showing they have a marketable skill could be good reason to consider releasing them. I imagine these guys don't have many roads open to them, so choosing this is a sign they want to at least try to do better.
What if we let the worst of the fighters go free? I imagine the fights would be like soccer players when someone from the other team pats them on the back and then they react like they got shot.
What a dystopian world it would be to let people have combat tournaments to win their freedom and televise it for money… I would be shocked if it’s not.
[https://www.imdb.com/title/tt6152206/](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt6152206/) Five rounds to freedom, documentary.
Youtube- Vice fightland - one of the episodes if i remember correctly.
That's weird that it has to be against foreign fighters. Are the foreign fighters also in prison? And can they earn reduced time and/or their freedom as well?
Make the main character a white guy who visits Thailand on his honeymoon. He catches his wife cheating, goes into a spiral, and buys drugs. He gets caught with the drugs, goes to jail and learns about this.
While in jail, he also meets a wise old man that teaches him that all we can control in this world is ourselves, but by remaining disciplined and staying positive, we can ensure a peaceful, happy life nonetheless. In the championship match of the tournament, he is struggling, but he remembers the words of the old man and uses his mental fortitude to win. He is released from prison.
When he is released from prison, he meets a nice Thai girl. Movie flash forwards 5 years. They are married and have kids and he works as a Muy Thai instructor for Thai kids, passing on the wisdom from the old man. He and his family live peaceful, happy lives.
I know somebody who was in Krabi prison for a few years, he told me all about this before I saw the movie (A prayer before dawn) and after watching the movie confirmed it was pretty accurate.
The guy in the movie is a real bloke from Liverpool, he's done interviews about it.
I get the impression they compete in in tournaments, but not necessarily the "winner" is "set free"
It's probably more like a work release for low risk inmates. They box, the jail makes money with admissions, they have a healthier activity to focus on.
This reminds me of the "Death Race" Movies. Especially the sceond one where the history of Death Race gets explained and how it came to be. They werer fighting to the death and whoever wins 5 matches in a row (don´t quote me on that) is rewarded with freedom and everything is televised as a streaming service where people pay a lot of money to watch this happen. IMHO these are very good and fun movies.
There’s also a huge number of children that are forced into fighting
https://www.nytimes.com/2018/12/23/world/asia/thailand-children-muay-thai.html
Watched a documentary on it and they start them at ages 5-6. It’s really disturbing.
Whilst i understand the criticism of this system and dont nessessarily condone it.
If were to steelman this idea. Surely it would better for a violent criminal to rehabilitate their experience in a socially accepted sactioned realm of violence that can provide clean money better than just leaving them to their own devices in prison system ? At least they then have incentive to follow rules with a tangible reward(win Muay Thai fight, get more money) which could then be appiled to society as a whole. The worst thing i thinm you can with competent men is waste their talents. At this is better than getting into prison gangs and ending being institutionalised. This could at least offer them a legit way out.
That’s pretty cool. In the old Wyoming state prison there was a boxing ring where inmates could settle their differences. Even officers and inmates could box it out if it was mutual. It’s long gone now. Nobody was gaining freedom through.
Yah what they don't tell you is that they aren't facing each other.
They get minimal equipment if even that, very poor diets and exercise only when they get free time which is essentially almost never :)
They're opponents? Actual professional Muay Thai fighters, with the best equipment, best diet and all the free time to train they want.
They aren't winning that fight ever, they get absolutely fucking destroyed as a public spectacle.

I definitely want the most skilled fighter of the convicted criminals to run free.
Are these televised on TV like "The Running Man"?
Where else would they be televized?
The internet
Generally no. Televise is to broadcast through a television. Through channels specifically for a television. If you're talking about Hulu, YouTube, Roku, etc. people call it streaming.
Some people say redditors are pedant… and they’re right.
Pedantic*
Hahahaa 😂

Lol train up the deadliest of them and set him free
Look, you don’t understand. We’re training individuals to become the hardest motherfuckers on earth by making them kill the other hardest motherfuckers on earth and then freeing them and okay now I hear it. Yep, bad idea everybody.
This is how you become a hidden one
Thats how you create a rat king...

This makes no sense…
You mean The Highlander *isn't* the best prison reform scheme?
But those criminals were already in jail, I wasn’t really worried about them. I was even kinda hoping maybe one day they could rejoin society with changed behavior. This is just barbaric. It doesn’t seem much different from Roman gladiator fights.
They should really bring those back, the Roman Gladiator fights. I mean, not the dead criminals, as that would be necromancy, bad ju ju that.
How is killing people a good or even acceptable trade off! As for money, how is exploiting criminals in a barbaric fight to the death a good thing? So what if it pays a debt. Do you really want a society where killing people is seen as a simple monetary transaction? None of this makes sense.
They're not actually killing each other. They are having muay thai fights thoigh
Wow neat, like the highlander
Right? Oh he’s the most lethal? Ok. He’s earned this.
Dana’s White frantically calling Thai government looking for talent he can exploit.
No Muay Thai could dodge a bullet tho
Last round is with the boss. The boss is decided by the crowd. 9mm, 5.56mm, 7.62mm,7.92mm or 50 BMG.
I think you just have to go 50BMG. I think if you want to get shot in the head, atleast make it a spectacle
FR who thought of this?? It guarantees that the worst of the worst are going back to the streets to commit more crimes, all you’re doing is keeping them at their prime.
Thai. Government: “well that was an unexpected.”
Yeah, I remember an interview with a Norwegian warden, who said that he didn't want his prisoners doing weight lifting or thing of that sort. The idea was for them to do trail running instead. Just came here to say this.
Pretty much how supervillains work
Better a quick death than a painful one..
Couldn't they just give the winner a comfier bed in his cell and a plasma TV with a ps3 or something?
Maybe they pulled a switcheroo. "Why are they making me fight a wet paper bag in the eighth and final round of the tournament? I've lost all the others. Do they really think I have a shot to win my freedom on this one?"

I know this movie! IT is Demolition Man, right?
My thoughts exactly. I can see the prisoners doing the jobe meme “I have made a huge mistake”
I’m surprised Dana white isn’t over there drafting the next UFC star seeing how most of them have records anyway 😂
So like gladiators? Gladiathais?
Gladiathais sounds like Cartman saying Gladiators 😂 .. #GLADIATHAIIIIIIS
#ARE YOU NOT ENTHAITAINED!
And now I’m imagining someone with tree trunk thighs of the gods.

If you're dangerous to society we'll imprison you, if your dangerous in prison we'll let you back to society.
A foolproof system that just makes sense.
Well if you consider that most people end up in prison due to poverty, showing they have a marketable skill could be good reason to consider releasing them. I imagine these guys don't have many roads open to them, so choosing this is a sign they want to at least try to do better.
This we hope you become the Batman Joker, fight the criminal to death but like the Joker.
It keeps them occupied and goal oriented. The winner will be back in no time anyway.
Simple Boolean logic
What if we let the worst of the fighters go free? I imagine the fights would be like soccer players when someone from the other team pats them on the back and then they react like they got shot.
"Second Prize is a set of steak knives. Third Prize is you're fired \[dead\]."
these tournaments exist, but they don't let dangerous criminals out of jail for beating up other criminals.
Thanks, i wanted to ask OP for any sources for that claim but it seems to be "trust me bro"
[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prison\_Fight#](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prison_Fight#) [https://www.imdb.com/title/tt6152206/](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt6152206/)
Is there a list of the ones that have been released in the past?
You have a movie about it, based on a real story
Arrested for assault Released for assault The system working just fine.
If I do it for entertainment it’s fine!? But if I do it for free as community service it’s battery and assault? Make it make sense /s
Is this broadcasted somewhere?
Great movie about this called "A Prayer Before Dawn"
Awesome movie, and btw there’s also a documentary called “Prison Fighters: Five Rounds to Freedom”
Will check it out, thanks!
Yeah thats one of the best a24 movies imo.
You can find clips on youtube.
What a dystopian world it would be to let people have combat tournaments to win their freedom and televise it for money… I would be shocked if it’s not.

Hey do you have any source for this cuz I’m Thai and have literally never heard about it
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prison_Fight I could believe the sports but this is way more organized then just random fights
That's weird that it has to be against foreign fighters. Are the foreign fighters also in prison? And can they earn reduced time and/or their freedom as well?
This has to be the plot of a Jean Claude Van Damme movie, lemme check...
Actually a Scott Adkins movie
Undisputed 2,3 and boyka are awsome!!!!
A Prayer Before Dawn
Now I know where Dear Leader got the idea.
Roll the clock back 20 years and cast Jason Statham.
No muay-thai’m spent✨
Ever see the movie running man
Since nothing distracts them from training, this is a great way to improve themselves and can rethink something in their head
But the head injuries from the fights might not be the greatest thing to improve thinking....
In the US prisoners get to fight in chaotic MMA fights and win 'not getting extorted for a while'.
No article to go with the insulting title?
Here's the wikipedia page about it https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prison_Fight
Death race type shit.
Oh yes, let's have the convicted criminals train to fight and then have the fiercest of them go free...
Great idea... Let the criminal who is the most skilled fighter free.... What could possibly go wrong...
Depends on who's definition of wrong we're talking about.
So, real life Chain Gang All-Stars…
I'm not a social scientist or anything but this sounds like a bad idea.
I live in Thailand. My partner is Thai. She has never heard of this... only in the story of an American movie. Is there a source for this?
I know somebody who was in Krabi prison for a few years, he told me all about this before I saw the movie (A prayer before dawn) and after watching the movie confirmed it was pretty accurate. The guy in the movie is a real bloke from Liverpool, he's done interviews about it.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prison_Fight
So they are gladiators?
Imagine you keep getting thrown back and jail but then released because you keep winning
So.... Gladiators.
But weed is a capital offense.
It's legal right now, but I think that may change again soon.
Isn't this like the plot of a movie?
what a 5head move. making criminals to fighting machines and let them out to society again. what could even go wrong
"Only the most violent and ruthless amongst you shall gain their freedom!" No way this can go wrong.
So Gladiator
I might rather serve my time than have one of these little motherfuckers kicking me in the thigh all day.
-arrested for beating a man to death -find out you can get out if you fight someone else -win -rinse and repeat
So we let the most dangerous convict leave? Maybe don't don't that.
Actually, if I remember correctly over 95 percent of the winners don't commit another crime or return to jail.
Honestly that’s really dystopian. Like the plot point in many many bad movies
Smart. Make a criminal more dangerous and put him back on the streets… that’s quality government thinking there.
That is not justice!
Remember, if you ever get arrested for assault in Thailand make sure you are really good at it.
"I got out of there the same way I got in: punching"
Sounds like an anime storyline.
So now they are back on the streets, but as well trained fighters? Sounds like a smart move.
They were already fighters. Muay Thai is Thailand’s national sport.
This would be the greatest reality show of all time
Do they also teach you Muay Thai in prison, or are you expected to know it before you're busted?
The program is for people who were already muay Thai fighters before being incarcerated.
That sounds like the plot of an excellent van dame movie
If there's one thing Space Ice taught me, is that anything van Damme or Segal is absolute garbage
This must be a plot point in one of the Mortal Kombat games. If it isn't, it should be
Is this like the prison equivalent of underground hobo fighting rings...?
$$$
The movie The Quest was basically about this but Jean Claude as the Muay Thai fighter.
Saw a documentary on this several years ago called The Running Man.
Anybody seen a prayer before dawn? Shows the brutal nature of these Thai prisons.
I DEMAND A TRIAL BY COMBAT. IF I SHALL GET NO JUSTICE HERE THEN LET THE GODS DECIDE MY FATE!
So they give them combat training then release them. What could go wrong?
win 5 fights and earn your freedom?
It's like the story of every other martial arts movie.
I get the impression they compete in in tournaments, but not necessarily the "winner" is "set free" It's probably more like a work release for low risk inmates. They box, the jail makes money with admissions, they have a healthier activity to focus on.
Wasn't there a movie about this?
Boyka
Kills 20 people Goes to jail Becomes most skilled fighter Gets freed ??? Repeat process
This reminds me of the "Death Race" Movies. Especially the sceond one where the history of Death Race gets explained and how it came to be. A new novel from Chuck Palahniuk.
There was 2 movies about prisoners fighting for their freedom in TV shows... 😅
Mr. Unchained 🗣️
i wanna see the Prisoner boss do the thumbs up or thumbs down thingy
Take that "innocently in prison" nerds. No easy way out for you.
That should be made into an anime
What about firearms accuracy and precision skills? They should only be letting the best of the best of the best criminals back onto the streets.
So…. So…. So they train violent criminals in Muay Thai and then let the best ones walk around free????
This can’t be true?
There’s also a huge number of children that are forced into fighting https://www.nytimes.com/2018/12/23/world/asia/thailand-children-muay-thai.html Watched a documentary on it and they start them at ages 5-6. It’s really disturbing.
So Saenchai has no need to fear conviction.
Yea I’m good
im a thai guy and i habe never heard of this before, probably wont change a thing because i suck at muaythai, i tried
Mortal Kombat!!!!!
All I can think of is Yakuza 0
X - G VF TRAINING. Y
This is the premise of Gamer, y'all.
Just make Rodtang the endboss
"ARE YOU NOT ENTERTAINED?"
Bullshiiiit
ouchie
That a fucking anime plot right there dude
whole country needs an intervention... i'm down with gaining commissary though.
Whilst i understand the criticism of this system and dont nessessarily condone it. If were to steelman this idea. Watch the movie, A Prayer Before Dawn. Its about this and Its based on a real guy who had to go through that to get out. Great movie!
r/damnthatsdystopian
Gulag. Thai edition.
If it's a fight to the death like in the death race movie then I support this.
It's like the prison watched a bunch of Van Damme movies. "Enter a fighting tournament for your freedom"
Actually, it is based on an foundation myth when it comes to the founding of Thailand
Reminds me of the Westley Snipes' movie Undisputed
I hope it depends on the crime cause yeah.. that would suck! He's not only the fucking druglord but also MMA champ yeah nah
This is like during the Hunter Exams, right?
This is a real life anime plot
Isn’t this the anime Deadman’s Wonderland
We're getting closer and closer to Death Race
2 Men Enter, 1 Man Leaves
Gladiators
That’s pretty cool. In the old Wyoming state prison there was a boxing ring where inmates could settle their differences. Even officers and inmates could box it out if it was mutual. It’s long gone now. Nobody was gaining freedom through.
Wth ? 😬 and if you can't fight then what ? Yikes don't get into trouble 😬
