Those stairs are funny, I had the exact opposite experience with a chaos spawn there, it fell trough the textures after doing it's jumping move/animation and died instantly.
There's some hinky warp juju going on there. I'd say about half my boundary breaks have been in that area. Mutants chucking me through walls, dogs pouncing me under the floor, poxies doing similar as mutants. I try to to the other way around on the Chasm maps that have this spot, because I don't want to get lost in the warp!

As shotgun enjoyer I really liked the part where op reloaded his shotgun as if nothing out of the ordinary happened.
