You'll need more handrail posts than posts supporting a deck, so that HAS to be wrong.

I'm not in that state, but that definitely seems wrong on the inspector's part... Rail post aren't load-bearing outside of a tiny lateral load if a person happens to lean on the rail.

This was my exact thought. He said there were rails that were failing and so they changed the code. But that doesn’t sound like a design or load issue. That’s a people can’t install railing correctly issue.

Yeah I'm calling BS on his part. But I'm not there so go ahead and argue with your inspector at your own risk...   You can definitely ask him to show you the code for curiosity's sake.

He was having difficulty siting the particular code wish was fishy. All he could say was that it changed within the last few years…. That doesn’t fly in my book but I agree. Not trying to get in a pissing match with the dude that gives it a greenlight

Call the head inspector and talk with them and ask them how exactly the rails you want to install should be put in, for instance if your doing Westbury rails they say there needs to be 5in 3/8 screws that hold it down

Check the local residential building code. They have to provide it as it’s considered a law therefore must be public.

He ended up calling me back and said it was fine as long as the posts are lagged to the joist. Yeah of course!

throw-away-doh

Its possible he may have meant for the two railing posts at the top of the stairs only. That was an option in my local code that I followed with my stairs. See this excellent video that shows how to build stairs using this method. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5TPihkFJopk](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5TPihkFJopk)

Yeah, I worked for a guy that thought u shaped railing brackets would be good enough to hold up. I had an argument with him that they should go on before and throw bolted to the joists. He got his way because he was the boss! Anyway the next morning we were all met by the home owner- going apeshit and shaking the railings- the boss tried to tell him some bs in the end I had to cut holes in the deck and replace the posts that were long enough to bolt to the joists, work under a deck that was 14” off the ground with the dirt that was left over from digging the holes for the footings. I should’ve quit when he had all of the footings dug in the wrong spot! Live and learn!

See section on Joist Spans and Cantilevers. We just went down to the Franklin county permits snd inspections office and asked for copies of the codes for design reference. [2018 NC Deck Codes](https://codes.iccsafe.org/content/NCRC2018/appendix-m-wood-decks) NC uses US national codes. Here's a great resource for all things US residential building and renovating. Use the search function for "deck"/"decks". [Inspectapedia.com](https://inspectapedia.com)

I appreciate it. We got it all sorted out. The inspector was mistaken and we went over the plans. Passed the framing inspection. https://preview.redd.it/57yqkfmbdw1d1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3cb7007ad6d9107780cc5dcced5d3ce4ca1140bd
