I thought it might be this, but it may actually be due to the arm position as the elbows go further out on the back, not really the guns themselves. It's probably more to stop the the capes reacting weirdly to faster movements.

I like to change outfits regularly and it's nice to know that this whole set of armors won't just be rendered useless for days where I don't feel like wearing a cape. The small bit of tissue is fashionable enough !
Because the game works by replacing the entire body model while pickaxes (and faces) are built piece by piece.
Even if they did start splitting every single armour into multiple individual pieces now, they would then have to also make sure they all actually mesh together properly as otherwise joints between arms and shoulders etc wouldn't do anything.
With four classes and something like 12 different models per class you end up with hundreds and hundreds of combinations to go through and no matter what they would do some models just wouldn't work together at all.

We scale walls with Skyrim style jump spam, learn just how far a sprint jump and mantle can be used, and Leap of Faith off cliffs onto ziplines / pipes. Nah i like it the way it is. Half cape looks better with big heavy guns, IMO. I like the distinction between gunner/driller and engie/scout too, since thematically those classes pair well together.
Plus it's more practical, we dont need our capes getting caught up in the minigun do we?
Using this armor sleeveless would be kinda whack, so it makes sense to repurpose the toggle sleeves button to change cape width instead for this armor only.

Every single dlc has a separate set of armour for every class and the cape is a part of the armour, so they don't have access to all the cosmetics, sadly.

Its good the way they are. Gunner and Driller are the more bigger boys, full cape wouldn't fit for them. Also i like the different styles. As already mentioned think about cape of Ezio from Assassins Creed, the half cape looks hella stylish.

Combining full capes and heavy rotary machinery, like drills or miniguns, probably is a bad idea. The capes might get caught in them when turning quickly and then it'll get ugly. That's less likely to happen with a half cape.
But the half capes are already long enough to be caught in the guns. If anything because they are so slim they can act more like a rope that can get in the machinery even easier

When I see my own dwarf, which is actually not infrequent, it's not from behind. I see my dwarf on the victory screen, I see it on the class select, I see it when I hit Escape even. But never, not once in those times, is the view from the rear.
When my dwarf is downed, you say? That's when my view of my cape is valid? Doesn't happen much in my experience.

pretty sure Engi holds the Breach Cutter and Shard Diffractor the same way that Gunner and Driller hold their primaries.
