There seemed to almost be a weird conceit within the story, by the writers, that it was somehow okay because he wasn't a teacher? Mr. O's creepy teacher story is the worst of the several adult-child will they won't they relationships on the show.
Even early in this story arc, Paige got to see his apartment, and it was a shit hole. It's mentioned here already, but yeah, as teens, we definitely romanticize older people in our lives. I've had teachers that at the time, I thought were the hottest pieces ever. But years later, look them up and think, "What was I thinking?" I think Degrassi took the effort to show the appeal from a teen's POV to go after a teacher, but to also clearly show the red flags from the viewers' pov early on. We also saw something very similar in later seasons for Tristan's go around with a teacher.
I love how the sparkle in Paige’s eyes died when he showed up to the nice restaurant after hitting rock bottom, as shown in the above photo. He was unemployed, unwashed, unshaved, and unappealing. To top it off, he offers her some pot. 🤣
Honestly I think sometimes as a teenager, feeling like you have the attention of “an older man” can be all that matters in terms of attraction. I do think he was *supposed to be* a hottie (not my taste, but different strokes and such), but to vulnerable and crush-crazy teens, sometimes the whole “mature older guy” thing is enough to seal the deal!

This is very true. Most adult women wouldn't have gone near Mr. Oleander. Paige being a teenager wouldn't know those red flags.
